Profile of Richard NurickRichard Nurick started in the Wine Trade in 1959 following Military Service andUniversity with a 3 years Apprenticeship. During these 3 years he worked in cellars,in a wine shop, assessing and Buying and selling wines, culminating in a Stage inBordeaux during the 1961 vintage.He joined a London Wholesale company selling wines to Hotels, Clubs andRestaurants and was promoted London Sales Director taking particular interest inChampagne and the West End of London. During this period he studied the WSETcourses and passed the Diploma Level and started a series of courses with TutoredTastings for the London University Wine & Food Society and other University WineClubs.He helped launch and run a new wine company, subsidiary of a large AmericanCompany as Sales Director with a seat on the Board of Long John Distillers, anothersubsidiary company.Launched Hawkins & Nurick importing and distributing mainly French Wines tothe Wine Trade and London Hotels, Clubs & Restaurants. Hawkins & Nurick Ltdwas a casualty of the 1980s depression and was taken over. Richard Nurick carriedon importing and Broking wines until he retired from full time wholesaling andstarted as a Wine Lecturer and Consultant. As a Wine Lecturer he works forNewbury and Henley Colleges teaching WSET and Wine Appreciation courses. As aconsultant he works with the largest Bulgarian wine producer employing NewZealand wine makers for the 2005 Vintage and launching the sales of Bulgarianwines in the UK. He now is in the process of launching a new wholesale winecompany as a consultant and continues to teach to wine students including officersat R M A Sandhurst and on board cruise liners visiting France, Spain and Portugalas well as the Mediterranean. He is currently a Full Judge with the InternationalWine Challenge.

FRENCH WINESFrom the classic regions, with a thousand years of vinous history, to the New Age ‘arrivistes’

of the south and west, France is fighting back against the New World. In a world of unifor -mity, the almost unbelievable diversity this country has to offer is her greatest strength.François Moutard makes this very stylish Champagne. He retains that exclusive, sought after pedigree that allows him to stand alonefrom the crowd. His wonderful wines remain targets for the cognoscenti.

How to sort out the rest of France in such a short space?

Our Rhône selection is one of which we are particularly proud. Châteauneuf du Pape can be a blisteringly hot,unforgiving area, but thankfully produces amazing wines. We have some of the region’s top producers on our side,including Château Fortia, André Brunel, Domaine de la Solitude, Domaine du Grand Tinel, Domaine du Haut des Terres Blanches andClos du Mont Olivet. Mouth-watering!

Our other Rhône stars provide equal brilliance, but for value-for-money, and an excellent selection to boot, try the Château deCampuget from the fashionable Costières de Nîmes. Highly recommended.

The heart of our Bordeaux list is provided by Borie Manoux and Compagnie Médocaine who have extensive cellars and remain the basisfor our comprehensive list, a list which includes a good balance of classed growths,Cru Bourgeois and Petits Châteaux.

A strong Burgundy offering is built around the wide-ranging selections of Remoissenet and René Monnier. Jean Goulley in Chablis,Domaine Joblot in Givry and Marc Morey in Chassagne Montrachet are producers whose wines wouldgrace any list.

Our Loire list is headed by the finesse that is Alphonse Mellot’s Sancerre. A plea for wine-lovers: is it time for a Muscadet revival? If so,Bernard Chéreau would surely lead the way; we have a very extensive selection for the connoisseur.Château de Tracy remains a benchmark for Pouilly Fumé.

Finally, one of our longest partnerships is with the house of Beyer, one of the classic houses of Alsace. These much sought-afterwines deserve to be featured in all good restaurants.

Owned by Joël and Annie Saurel, this vineyard is located at the foot of the famous hills of Montmirail on rocky soilsof clay and white sand. The vines are all between 50 and 60 years old. Château de Campuget is run by Jean-Lin Dalle and his son Franck-Lin, a family of Flemish extractionwho fervently believe that wine making begins in the vineyard. The secret of the estate’s successis its reliance on the best grapes – Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Marsanne and Roussanne, plantedin the stony soil, like that of the Rhône, which reflects the sun and enlivens the vines. The first members of the noble Scottish Stutt family in France were part of a large army that camefrom Scotland in the fifteenth century to help the future King Charles VII of France during the HundredYears War. After naturalisation, their name was gallicized to become d’Estutt. In 1586, Francois Stutt marriedFrançoise de Bar who brought with her the dowry of the Lordship of Tracy, where the traditionof vine growing had been taking place for centuries. A purchase agreement dated 1396, kept in the familyrecords, include the vineyards of Château de Tracy, still family owned and cultivated todayunder the leadership of the Comte Henry d’Estutt d’Assay. Founded by Eugenio Collavini in 1896, this family owned house is now run by Manlio Collavini togetherwith his three sons. Located in Udine, they were among the first to vinify Ribolla Gialla (an ancientlocal variety) and to implement new winemaking technologies. Collavini prides itself on its clean,modern style wines while still retaining the traditions and grape varieties native to the area.

Their flagship white wine ‘Broy’ 2003 made from Chardonnay, Tocai and Sauvignon was awardedthe coveted 3 Bicchieri in the 2005 Gambera Rosso as was the 2006 in the 2008 edition.

The Collio region, a strip of hills against the Slovenian border, was only reunited with Italy after theFirst World War. This region is reputed to have one of Europe’s most privileged micro-climates for whitewines which dominate the region, while the red wines are also noted for their appeal.

Collio wines are rather more intense than the wines from Friuli and have an impressive richness andlength. Isonzo is a small DOC in the extreme north east of Italy in the Friuli region.

In the 2005 edition, the 2001 La Court Barbera d’Asti has beenawarded ‘3 Bicchieri’ as was the 2000 in the previous year. In the 2007 edition, La Court 2003 alsoobtained this coveted award.

The Sartirano family’s wine business was founded in 1871, but it was only in the 1950s that theystarted to develop the domestic market outside Piemonte, selling their wines in 54L barrels. In 1970the family decided to bottle its wines and installed its first bottling line. Business prospered and in1976 a new winery was built and the company was renamed Cantina San Silvestro. Continuingthis expansion, in 2001 the family purchased 8 hectares of land in the middle of the Barolo regionwhere they have built a new 5,000 square metre winery with modern vinification and increasedstorage facilities. In the 1990’s the export market soared and today export sales now account for60% of San Silvestro’s total production.

San Silvestro produce good quality, typical and commercially priced Piemontese wines from theirown grapes as well as working with long term contract growers from the Langhe area and otherprime areas of the Piemonte.

The Frescobaldi name goes back many centuries into the history of art, culture, trade and financeof Italy in general and Tuscany in particular. From the second half of the last century, the Frescobaldi’swere key players in the development of Tuscan vine-growing.

They were the first to plant new varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot and toadopt new planting, cultivation and wine-making systems in their properties. From the second halfof the 1950’s and throughout the 1960’s, the company’s growth was impressive.

In 1989 Frescobaldi bought the Castelgiocondo estate in Montalcino, the largest vine-growing farmin the Brunello area. Although the estates have gone through many changes over the years, ownershiphas never changed hands and still, after 30 generations, is in full control of the Frescobaldi family.

One of the major and largest vine growing businesses in Europe, Frescobaldi owns nine estatescovering over 1,000 ha of vineyards, all located in excellent areas for fine wines. Directly managedby its family members, Frescobaldi produces almost 7 million bottles and the wines are exportedto over 60 countries throughout the world.

The Frescobaldi estates from which the Classici range is produced, add up to over 700 ha of whichapproximately 350 are vineyards located in the great wine-making areas: Remole, 15 km east ofFlorence in the Chianti Rufina area; Montagnana and Valiano, approximately 30 km south westof Florence, in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini area and Corte, in the Mugello.

Frescobaldi’s Classici range of wines is produced mainly with grapes from these properties. Frescobaldi Classici Range

The Castiglioni Estate is located on the hills of Chianti Colli Fiorentini, about 20 Km south west of Florence.At Castiglioni, the clay rich soil guarantees better water retention and allows the vines to resist thesummer drought conditions that often occur in this part of Tuscany. Consequently, the grapes'balanced and unstressed ripening produces a rounder and fuller taste to the wine. The estate'srelatively low altitude, between 180 and 220 metres, contributes to the speedy and complete ripeningof Castiglioni's grapes. Sangiovese, in particular, has a naturally intense aromatic note and CastiglioniChianti is a perfect reflection. The estate enjoys an average annual production of 50,000 bottles.

Castello di Pomino

The Castello di Pomino estate, 40 Km north–east of Florence, on the slopes of the Apennine mountains,stretches over 1,458 hectares of land, 94 of which are cultivated with vineyards.

Pomino is a unique environmental and production site in Tuscany and best represents the Frescobaldi’sinnovative spirit.

The Pomino mountain area features cool, dry windy weather, with noticeable temperature changesbetween day and night and from season to season, with short vegetative cycles.

The Pomino DOC is one of the smallest in Italy and the only one in Tuscany to make prominent useof international varieties; Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc make up the blend for Pomino Bianco andthe Pomino Rosso is made from Sangiovese and Pinot Noir. Built in 1100, Castelgiocondo was one of the first four estates to produce and bottle the Brunellodi Montalcino wine at the end of the 19th century. The property is located on the Montalcino hills,40 km from the sea, 250 to 450 metres above sea level. Castelgiocondo is set in typical mediterraneanwoodlands and enjoys a steady climate over the years: very hot and dry, with a little evenly distributedrainfall and perfect orientation and exposure to the sun. With 151 hectares of Brunello vineyards,Castelgiocondo is the largest vine–growing estate in Brunello di Montalcino and produces an averageof 700,000 bottles a year.

Luce della Vite began in 1995, as a collaborative venture between Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi,one of Tuscany’s most prestigious fine–wine producers, and Robert Mondavi, world-wide symbolof American wine.

The two companies, both major figures in the wine world and similar in culture and style, shared witheach other their wealth of experience. They joined forces with the common goal of creating andoffering to the international marketplace unique Tuscan wines of great distinction, from exceptionalgrowing areas and vineyards.

In 2005 Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi purchased all of the Robert Mondavi Luce della Vite shares, whichsubsequently went to Mondavi Investment Partner LLC, the limited partnership begun by RobertMondavi’s son Michael.

Carpineto was founded in 1967 by Antonio Zaccheo and Giovanni Sacchet and farms 424 hectaresof land spread over four estates among Tuscany’s most prestigious appellations. Farnito

The FARNITO range of wines come from the Gaville estate which is located on an old Etruscansettlement overlooking the Arno valley where the farmhouse dates back to the 13th century.

The range is made from international varieties which are not native to Tuscany but which have beenselected by Carpineto as being suited to the terroir and climate of the region in order to producetop quality wines. The wines are made from grapes which have been meticulously selected andcarefully vinified and then aged in barrique; truly world class.

The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 2 small vineyards and is aged in oak barriques for 12 months,resulting in a wine with wonderful depth and concentration, and with long ageing potential.

The beautifully packaged Vin Santo from this estate is full of honied but balanced sweetness witha wonderful long and lingering aftertaste. The ideal wine to accompany rich desserts.

Among the rolling hills of the Vino Nobile region of Tuscany, lie 100 hectares of vineyards plantedwith new clones of Sangiovese and other international varieties on modern rootstocks dedicatedto Carpineto’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Single Vineyards Programme. Planting densityreaches 8,500 vines per hectare for many sites.

On the estate, there is also an old farmhouse complex, complete with vinification and ageing cellars,in which the Vino Nobile and Single Vineyard wines are produced. Cellar capacity is approximately3,500 hl of wood cooperage, mostly oval Slovenian oak casks and traditional barrels, in additionto the more modern stainless steel tanks. A new winery with additional ageing cellars has justbeen constructed.

In addition to the classic Vino Nobile di Montepulcianco Riserva, Carpineto produces single estatewines of great power, concentration and finesse. As with any top quality wine, they are producedin limited quantities only.

The historical origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio can be traced back to the 5th century with perioddocuments confirming the production of wine at that time. The present owners, the Matta family,acquired the property in 1964 and restored it back to its former splendour.

The estate, with 150 ha, is one of the largest in the area and of these, 32 ha are dedicated to the vine.

Castello Vicchiomaggio produces several styles of wine, from the traditional to the innovative.In order to achieve this, the estate has been carefully classified according to its soil type and exposure.Each wine is named after a specific vineyard area. All production and winemaking is supervisedby John Matta who studied viticulture and oenology. The estate is totally family run, thus ensuringa unique and identifiable style of wine.

Vicchiomaggio is consistently classified amongst Italy’s top estates and in 2002 John Matta wasawarded the Tasca d’Almerita Trophy for ‘Best Italian Producer of the Year’. This was followed by theIWSC 2005 accolade for Italian Wine Producer of the Year with the 2003 La Prima winning the CarpinetoTrophy for Best Sangiovese in the same competition. A unique achievement for an Englishman!

The 2004 FSM Merlot was awarded 3 Bicchieri in the 2008 Gambero Rosso.

MARCHE WINES

The Marche region is bordered to the north by Romagna, to the west along the spine of the Apennines,by Tuscany and Umbria, to the south by the Abruzzi and to the east by the Adriatic sea. This regionis home to the famous fish dish wine ‘Verdicchio’.

Antonio Garofoli started producing and selling local wines in 1871. His son Gioacchino followedin his footsteps and today the winery is run by his two grandsons Carlo and Gianfranco. Carlo, theoenologist, follows modern winemaking technology and has led the company to become oneof the most prestigious wineries not only in the Marche but also in Italy. Awards for quality continueto enhance Garofoli’s credentials and for the 5th year running in 2005 its ‘Podium’ Verdicchio Classicowas granted the highest acclaim, 3 glasses, in the Gambero Rosso. Very few wines have gainedthis award in five consecutive vintages. To add to this success, their 2001 Agontano was awarded3 Bicchieri in the 2005 guide, the first time that Garofoli have had this award for a red wine.

Their latest accolade is the achievement of the Stella, the star awarded to a winery for achievingthe coveted 3 Bicchieri 10 times.

ABRUZZI WINES

Cantine Bove was established in 1930 and has since modernised the winery, which now boastsa high-tech bottling plant. The estate comprises 60 hectares of well situated vineyards and underthe watchful eye of oenolgist Dott. Vittorio Festa, the vinification techniques ensure the productionof the highest quality wines from low yields, with rigorous grape selection and refined ageing inoak barrels.

The native red Montepulciano grape (not to be confused with the town of that name in Tuscanywhere Vino Nobile is made) is a vine of undeniable distinction. In parts of the Abruzzi, mainly in thenorth, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo becomes a red wine of irresistible character; full-bodied, even robust,with a capacity to age but it enjoys such supple smoothness that it can be eminently drinkableeven when young.

The Bove style is to make well textured, mellow red wines showing good typicity. Their Feudi d’Albeis made in an easy drinking style which may be drunk on its own or to accompany food while theAvegiano is rich with chunky fruit and firm tannins. Their flagship Indio shows dense flavours with hintsof chocolate and spice enhanced by oak ageing.

The jewels in the Carlo Pellegrino crown are the dessert wines from the island of Pantelleria, a volcanic outcropof black lava rock situated off the arid Tunisian coast which forms Italy’s southernmost DOC re - gion. Pellegrino hasinvested over £2 million in the construction of a winery. The fruit is soft pressed andcool fermented to capture the wonderful freshness of the Zibibbo. The Moscato has all the intensity and fruitaroma of the grape and the natural sweetness is beautifully balanced with good acidity. In 1880 Paolo Pellegrino founded a winery in the town of Marsala to produce a fortified wine thatwas enjoying success with the Victorians throughout the British Empire. Today the company is stillfamily owned and managed and is now the undisputed market leader, appreciated in everycorner of the world. It can be served chilled as aperitifs or in cocktails at room temperature asdessert wines, as an accompaniment to strong cheese or as a vital ingredient in many finerecipes.

Grapes are pressed, fermented and boiled, must called Calamich is added, together with a littlegrape spirit to make Marsala. The young wine is then left to mature in large cherry–wood barrels. Bylaw, Marsala Superiore requires 2 years ageing.

We had a happy littletime looking for a couple of new wines and found a cracking Garnachafrom Campo de Borja with unbelievable concentration, and a charming Viura/Sauvignonblend from Tierra de Castilla. The Ademas wines demand your attention. They look great and tastebetter.Our Spanish list gains in importance. The Enate winery produces some stunning wines from one of the world’s mostgorgeous wineries. State of the Art indeed! Rioja will always form the core of any Spanish list, so please try the Ondarre wines. TheGraciano is a more modern take on a classic.

But other areas are catching up. A stunning Priorat from the lovely Pinord concern, and Serra da Estrela’s slinky Albarino add breadth toour list.

Premium German wines, for so long in the doldrums, are at last returning to the forefront as the public realises that the beautiful acidityand relatively low alcohol of top class Rieslings can rank among the world’s great wines. Schloss Johannisberg is steeped in history and according to legend the vineyards were planted onthe orders of the Roman Emperor Charlemagne. Records show that by the year 817, the vineyardwas producing 6,000 litres of wine per year.

Planted solely with Riesling grapes in 1720, Schloss Johannisberg was the world's first Riesling Estate.It was here in 1775 that the Spätlese quality was discovered using late picked grapes suffering from‘noble rot’. Following this discovery, in 1787 the estate added Auslese, Beerenauslese andTrockenbeerenauslese to the repertoire of the wine world.

AUSTRIAWeingut Rabl, Kamptal

Located in the prestigious Kamptal-Donau (Danube) wine region of Austria, Rabl winery enjoys a winegrowing tradition which goes back to 1828 and which is now under the careful eye of Rudolf RablJr. The estate comprises 50 hectares around the hills of Langenlois. The vines are strictly pruned andyields are kept low to obtain good extract in the grapes which are harvested by hand. Temperaturecontrolled fermentation and maturation takes place in stainless steel or in wooden barrels in a cellarthat is located 7 meters underground.

Kamptal Donau is the best area for the production of fine Grüner Veltiner wines, the signature whitegrape for Austria.

Rabl are quickly gaining recognition for their outstanding wines. Their Rabl Gruner Veltliner Käferberghas already won several prestigious awards including the winner of the 2006 Decanter AustrianSingle Variety Trophy over £10 and the 2007 IWC Veltliner Trophy and Best Austrian White Trophy.

A couple of beauties here. We wanted to design something that looked gorgeous and tastedbetter. The Ademas Viura Sauvignon has a wonderfully refreshing feel, at odds with a lot of whiteSpanish wines. The jaw-dropper, however, is the Ademas Garnacha, made from old vines anddripping with intensity and flavour. Campo de Borja is an area which is attracting more and moreattention for its potential and it is easy to see why. Ademas - remember that name!

The small DO of Rias Baixas situated in Galicia in the north-west of Spain is home to the variety ofAlbarino, one of the most sought after white varieties in Spain. This wine has a rounded, mineralflavour with melon and citrus tones and fresh, balanced acidity. Albarino is the perfectaccompaniment to fish and seafood.

This area to the west of Rioja was granted D.O. status in 1982 and is home to the famous Vega Si-cilia. Wines from this region are full flavoured and complex – the fashionable alternative to Rioja.The young Ribereno is made from 100% Tempranillo, aged in medium toast American oak and showsvanilla with lots of ripe blackberry fruit, very drinkable in style. The Crianza was aged for 12 monthsin oak and is more structured with firm, but balanced tannins.

The story of Bodegas Pinord started more than 150 years ago, when the Tetas family began to makewines on their estate at Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues from grapes they grew themselves and vinified inthe traditional way. In 1942 José Maria Tetas established the existing wine cellars at Vilafranca del Penedés, only 4 kmfrom the original estate. Located in Yepes to the north of Toledo, this new bodega was established in 2000 with the aim ofproducing wines which reflect the personality of the local terroir and microclimate through theirunique character. LEBANON

Ksara Estate lies in the heart of the Bekaa Valley near Baalbek and is so named because it was thesite of a ksar or fortress at the time of the Crusades. The property was acquired by the Jesuits in 1857when it was already famed as a vineyard and they continued the tradition of winemaking onthe estate.

Climatic conditions in the Bekaa provide Ksara's vineyards with exceptional advantages. There isalmost no rainfall during the growing season and diseases seldom strike the vines. Their grapes areconsidered to be grown almost organically because herbicides are not used at all, as the soil ismanually worked and the vineyards are treated with organic products to give protection againstoidium attacks.

Château Ksara is by far the oldest and yet the most modern winery in the whole region and is thelargest producer in the Lebanon with 348 hectares and 38% of the local production.Annual production is over 2 million bottles which are distributed worldwide.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the winery, a prestige cuvée, Le Souverain, has been launchedto much acclaim. It is made from a unique grape variety, Arinarnoa (50%) and CabernetSauvignon (50%) and it has become Ksara’s new iconic wine.

NEW WORLD WINESIt seems heretical to try to summarise the wines we list from outside Europe in one page.

We’ll try, working our way from East to West.Saint Clair’s reputation has been recognised by its array of awards. This is a testament to the viticultural skills of Neal Ibbotson and thewinemaking skills of Matt Thompson, consultant winemaker. The recent release of the Pioneer Blockseries of wines was a major event and these wines are much sought after. Goldwater, based at Waiheke Island, provides a wonderfulcontrast in Sauvignon styles, the Goldwater version being more restrained and a little more European in style.

In Australia we have been long-term partners with Berton Vineyards, whose motto - “Wines from Altitude with Attitude” - is certainlyembraced by its principals! The Opal Ridge range, with new labelling, represents superb value for money,while the elegant Foundstone wines have also had a makeover. However, we must point you in the direction of two stunners; theWhite Viognier and Black Shiraz wines are archetypal Australian wines, with lashings of good fruit, while the Reserve wines are models of style.The Bonsai Shiraz is a barnstormer.

New to our list is the multi-award winning winery of Haan, from the Barossa Valley, whose wines turned a few headsat our annual tastings earlier this year. Ben Riggs, the King of the McLaren Vale, shows off all his skills with the Penny’s Hill range.

To South Africa. The iconic Hamilton Russell produces what is regarded as perhaps the best Pinot Noir outside Burgundy, with a quitewonderfully expressive Chardonnay to go alongside it. Ashbourne Vineyards, and Southern Right, in whichHamilton Russell are involved, are also well on their way to achieving first-rank status. Groot Constantia is one of thelegendary estates in Constantia. Look out for a brilliant Shiraz. Weltevrede is based in Robertson and produces particularly good Chardonnay.

Across the Atlantic to Argentina (and why not!) Michel Torino’s El Esteco may well be the most beautiful winery estatein the world. Set in the cool climate area of Cafayate in the north of Argentina, these wines have improved vintage after vintage andnow rank among the best-value wines on our list. The Don David Tannat is quite extraordinary, whilethe organic CUMA range shows the pure expression of fruit that this area is famous for. We’re also proud to be working with two wineriesin Mendoza - the stunning boutique winery of Antucura and larger scale Telteca. Try the Anta Malbec and see if you agree with RobertParker’s ranking of 92.

Chile offers us three top notch wineries: Tamaya is situated in the cool climate region of Limari (very trendy!), theSauvignon Blanc reflecting the growing conditions. Our oldest Chilean partner, Echeverria, produces wines with greattypicity. If you’ve ever wondered what the elusive Carmenere character is, try one of theirs. Agustinos, with extensive plantings inBio Bio (the new Burgundy?) has breathtaking Pinot Noirs.

We made great strides last year in California. Paul Dolan, champion eco warrior, leads the team at Parducci. His Paul Dolan wines areorganic and justifiably famous, and the rest of the Parducci range represents excellent value. ThePetite Sirah is a beautiful mouthful. Heller, based in Carmel, produce excellent varietals, more and more of which are finding their wayinto the very best restaurants. Andrew Quady is one of our more idiosyncraticwinemakers, whose gorgeous dessert wines are world famous.

Finally, Pelee Island, in Ontario, produces a range of wines including the intriguingly namedEco Trail Chambourcin Cabernet, and an awesome Icewine.

It started in May 1996 with a 75 acre property in High Eden, an area of rugged beauty straddling theridge dividing Eden Valley and the Barossa. The first grapes were planted in that spring - ten acresof Shiraz and seven acres of Chardonnay - but without any permanent water. It was not until 1998after the new dam filled, that the vines finally had a decent drink.

With all this, the vines struggled through their impressionable years. Lots of love and attention, but thelack of water really retarded their growth, so much so that a Swedish friend of the Bertons jokinglytold them they had planted a bonsai vineyard. The name stuck and later became the name oftheir premium Shiraz. With the good annual rainfall achieved over the past few years in High Eden ,the vines are in great condition these days, but Bob and Cherie Berton still remember the early daysevery time they open a bottle of the Bonsai.

After the dam was full the Bertons were able to continue planting some Cabernet Sauvignon andlastly some Sauvignon Blanc. They’re now growing happily amongst rocks, white rocks - big whiterocks - it comes with the ancient podzolic soils - which really make driving trellis posts interesting,but that’s another story.

“Head over Heels” with their wine

They travelled the world in search of the ultimate home, a place that would fulfil a dream of makingvery special, unique wine. Many places charmed them: Cyprus, France, Portugal, Spain, Madeira,New Zealand, Victoria, Tasmania, Margaret River and the Hunter Valley, but they kept returning tothe Barossa Valley.

And after 26 years working in business in Hong Kong, Hans Rudolf Haan and his wife Fransien knewwhen they saw the 45 acre (18 hectare) vineyard, initially purchased in 1853 by George FriedrichSchmidt for one pound an acre, that they had found the vineyard and home of their dreams.

They moved to the area in 1995, producing their first vintage in 1996.

Their 19 hectare Hanenhof Estate consists mainly of the sandy loam soils that dominate the Barossa,and help produce rich, luscious Shiraz and Cabernets. The Estate also grows some exceptionalMerlot, together with a small amount of Malbec and Petit Verdot. Semillon and Viognier are alsogrown. The Haan philosophy is based on ‘best practice’, the vineyard being run on a ‘minimalinput’ system, offering considerable environmental protection. Chemical use is kept to an absoluteminimum, as is irrigation and ground disturbance.

And what results! Vineyard manager Robert Seelander and winemaker ‘Merlot Magician’ JamesIrvine have combined to produce a series of outstanding wines.

In the Australian Wine Companion 2008 Edition James Halliday gave Haan Wines a five star rating.

In 2007 Robert Parker gave the Shiraz Prestige a score of 93.

In 2005 Haan Wines won the Chateau Pichon Longueville trophy for the Best Blended Red Wine withtheir Wilhelmus at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London from a total of 5,100 wineentries from 57 countries. At the same competition Haan Wines won Australian Wine Producer ofthe Year, competing against 453 Australian winery entries.

New to our list, these wines have already caused great interest among our customers. Taste themand it’s easy to see why.

Established by Susie and Tony Parkinson in 1988, with the purchase of 32 ha (80 acres) of grazingland on the foothills east of McLaren Vale, Penny’s Hill Vineyard was named after the hill where itis located. The land is ideal for the cultivation of Shiraz and the first vines were planted in 1991.Additional vineyards have since been purchased near Willunga, in an area known originally as theBay of Biscay.

Penny’s Hill first appeared in packaged form when the ‘red dot’ graced a small batch of 1995 Shiraz– only 141 cases were released in May 1997. The red dot idea occurred as the result of looking atpaintings in commercial art galleries. It was apparent that works sold could be easily identified.

It is the visual power of the little red dot which is still very much a feature of Penny’s Hill.

Whilst McLaren Vale is noted for consistent climatic conditions, the slightly higher elevation of Penny’sHill vineyard reduces temperature extremes in summer, making for a superior site-climate which inturn contributes to even ripening and higher fruit quality

The Pennys Hill wines, crafted by winemaker Ben Riggs, are full-flavoured, generous and smooth withgreat fruit expression, beautifully balanced oak and integrated tannins. Penny’s Hill Footprint Shiraz2004 was awarded 93-95 points by Parker.

NEW ZEALAND

Kim and Jeanette Goldwater established Goldwater Estate in 1978 when they pioneered winegrowing on Waiheke Island. Kim recognised that the unique microclimate of Waiheke would beideal for producing superlative Cabernet and Merlot wines. Using traditional winemaking techniquestogether with modern technology and subtle use of French oak, the Goldwaters produce handcrafted wines with vibrant fruit, elegant structure and exceptional concentration. Worldwiderecognition for their wines has resulted in some 35 other wineries planting on Waiheke Island. Kimand Jeanette have 35 acres planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and alittle Chardonnay. Goldwater was the first and continues to be the foremost producer. Theirdaughter Gretchen and her husband, Ken Christie have now joined the family company tocontinue this tradition.

In the early 1990’s the Goldwaters established a production base in Marlborough for SauvignonBlanc and Chardonnay. Again, the Goldwater philosophy of ‘a great wine is born in the vineyard’played an important part in their choice of site. They settled on 85 acres in the Wairau Valley,which is famed for its silty clay and gravel composition.

The Goldwater Sauvignon Blanc is a riper style than many Marlborough wines and is consistentlyreviewed as one of the best Sauvignons from the region. Southern Right is a small Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc specialist located on a 113 ha prop -erty in cool, maritime Walker Bay. Hamilton Russell Vineyards – the most southerly wine estate in Africa and the closest to the sea –is located in the cool, maritime Walker Bay wine region, in a beautiful valley behind the old fishingvillage of Hermanus. Founder Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare farm in 1975, after an exhaustive search for themost southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines froma selection of noble varieties. His son Anthony, who took over in 1991, narrowed the range to Pinot Noir andChardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to workonly with grapes from their terroir. The priceless Manor House and the buildings grouped around it are unequalled examples of CapeDutch architecture both in majesty and simplicity. The collection of artefacts, including furnitureand pieces of art, reflects the rich cultural tradition of the Cape. Today, the estate is owned by theGroot Constantia Trust which is committed to building upon the foundations of this, South Africa’soldest and best known estate. It is one of South Africa’s most visited tourist attractions.

The story of Groot Constantia goes back to 1685 when Simon van der Stel, a future governor of theCape, was granted land for a farm on the Eastern side of Table Mountain, which he named Constantia .After several changes of ownership, it was sold to the Cloete family in 1778 and held by them for fivegenerations until 1885. Groot Constantia received world acclaim for their wines amongst the noblepalates of Napoleon, Bismarck and King Louis Philippe of France who was the biggest single buyerof Groot Constantia wines. They were forced to sell after the vine disease phylloxera ravaged thevineyards and it then became the property of the Cape government.

The total estate covers 165 hectares of which 87 hectares are currently planted, at a height of 60–280metres above sea level. The climate is generally cool resulting in complex and balanced wines.

When Gilbert Heller bought the former Durney Vineyards in 1994, he realised that if he was going to makeoutstanding wine, he had to start with the vineyard. Heller Estate farms 50 hectaresof organically certified vineyards in the Carmel Valley, producing chemical free grapes withoutpesticides or herbicides and using environmentally friendly cultivation methods. They believe that, in the longrun, they will produce even higher quality fruit and healthier vines which will live longer.

The winery and vineyards are located 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean in an idyllic setting with sweeping viewsof the Cachagua Valley, a high mountain valley off the Carmel Valley itself.

The vines are located at 1500 to 2000 feet, giving good diurnal temperature differences and leading to great fruitexpression.

Gilbert Heller’s wife, Toby, is a sculptor, working mostly in metal, and a rendition of her ‘Dances onthe Palate’ graces the Heller label.

Pelee Island is Canada’s largest independent winery and also the largest estate vineyard covering 600 acres. Nestledin the western basin of Lake Erie, Pelee Island is Canada’s southernmost inhabitedtip of land and is Canada’s warmest region with a growing season over 50 days longer than themainland and with a unique micro–climate provided by the shallow waters of Lake Erie. Home to over 10,000indigenous species, Pelee Island is the environmental pride of Canada.

The 2003 Vidal Icewine received a Gold Medal at the 2005 Citadelles du Vin at Vinexpo, the highest accolade.

IcewineIcewine is produced from grapes which are left on the vine in the autumn and then hand harvestedin December and January when temperatures fall below -10 C and the grapes have frozen solidnaturally on the vine. The sugar content at picking is between 380 and 450g/l sugar. The higher the sugar levelsthe better the quality must. The yield of the concentrated juices is extremely low meaning that some 75 litres of juiceis extracted per 1000 kilos of grapes, making this a very rare andspecial product.

Viña Echeverria is wholly owned by the Echeverria family. Their wines are made mainly from their owngrapes together with rigorously selected grapes from other growers. All of their wines are bottled onthe estate. Roberto Echeverria has recently made a considerable investment both in the vineyardand winery and one of his current primary targets is to obtain certification for his estate asenvironmentally friendly in all aspects. Great care is taken with the overall vineyard management.

The vineyard is sub-divided into very small lots, each controlled for nutrient and water requirementson an individual basis. This helps to ensure balance, ripening and consistency of the grapesthroughout the estate so that quality is assured.

The 2004 Echeverria Carmenère was awarded Best Value Red Wine in the Chilean Wine Challenge2005. This was followed by Best Carmenere for the 2005 vintage at the 2006 Chilean Challenge.

This stunningly located boutique winery owned by Anne Caroline and Gerardo Cartellone is situatedto the south of Mendoza in Tunyan in the Uco valley. Their neighbours are Lurton, Michel Rolland andClos de los 7 owned by Château Lafite. The area is being promoted as the ‘Pauillac’ of Mendozaand is attracting much interest for the quality and prestige of its wines.

Antucura means ‘Stone of the Sun’ in Mapudungun, the ancient language of the Pehuenches, thefirst inhabitants of the area. Anne Caroline and Gerardo chose this name for their winery and lodgeat Vista Flores to denote the harmony of their vineyards with the natural topography and rocky soilof the area.

The estate covers 120 hectares of which 100 have been planted. A guest house has just beencompleted and a new modern winery is envisaged for 2008 which will be incorporated into thelandscape with a lake so that the winery is in balance with the environment and scenery.

The wine consultant is Michel Rolland and the wines are the epitome of his usual rich style.

All in all, this is a beautifully prepared vision with the drive and expertise to support it.

Michel Torino has made great investments in the winery and has also planted 500 ha of vineyardsin the last 3–4 years. The Bodega El Esteco is situated in the foothills of the Andes in the Cafayateregion around Salta in North-West Argentina, in one of the most scenic regions of this country.The vineyards are planted at 1700 metres making them some of the highest commercial sitesin the world.

From the 2006 vintage, their vineyards have been certified as totallyorganic.

A luxury wine spa has recently been opened at Michel Torino in partnership with Sheraton Hotels,using beauty and treatment products derived from grapes and wine residues from the winery.

Michel Torino is well recognised on the international market and is renowned for its excellent winequality, elegant label design and premium presentation.

AT A GLANCE WINESLast year we produced these pages for the first time and our customers appreciated the easylayout. Once more, we’ve arranged the wines in a friendly format on thefollowing few pages.The rosé sector has been the revelation of the wine trade over the last two years. Not only are we drinking more of it, but we’redrinking much better quality and we’re drinking it the whole year round.

Prosecco, too, is on a roll, and has finally managed to establish its own identity. We buy ours from the wonderful Carpenè Malvoltifamily.

We have an extensive range of dessert wines, the stars of which include Domaine de Coyeux, Léon Beyer, Chiarlo’s Nivole,Pellegrino’s Passito di Pantelleria and Pelee Islands Icewine. Pride of place, however, goes to the mercurial Andrew Quady and hisiconic Essensia and Elysium.

Following a couple of pages of different-sized bottles, we end with our fortified selection, headed by the ubiquitous Marsala andfeaturing a grand selection from our port partners, Barros.

SALES TERMSTHE CONTRACT1.1 All orders are accepted by the Seller only under these Terms which may not be altered except with the written agreement of a Company Director of the Seller. Any contrary or additional

terms unless so agreed are excluded.1.2 Orders are accepted subject to availability of Goods at the time of delivery.1.3 Orders which have been accepted by the Seller may be cancelled only with the written agreement of a Company Director of the Seller and on terms that the Buyer will indemnify the

Seller against all losses damages costs and expenses incurred by the Seller as a result of that cancellation.PRICE

date of the delivery. All prices quoted are exclusive of delivery charges and of Value Added Tax which is payable at the rate ruling at the date of delivery unless a zero rated or exempt from VAT.2.2 Any discounts, deductions, allowances or rebates agreed are only available if all sums due from the Buyer to the Seller are paid by the due date.PAYMENT3.1 Credit is granted and may be reviewed at any time at the Seller’s discretion. The Seller reserves the right to refuse to execute any order or Contract if the arrangements for payment

or the Buyer’s credit rating is not satisfactory to the Seller.3.2 The Buyer shall pay the price of the Goods within 30 days of the end of the month in which delivery takes place.3.3 The Seller may charge interest, at the rate of 4% above the Royal Bank of Scotland Base Rate, on all amounts which are not paid by the due date.DELIVERY4.1 Delivery shall occur when the Goods have been collected by the Buyer or have been delivered to the address agreed by the Seller.4.2 The Buyer will indemnify the Seller in respect of all losses damages costs and expenses incurred as a result of delivery in accordance with the Buyer’s instructions. This indemnity will

be reduced in proportion to the extent that such losses, damages, costs or expenses are due to the Seller’s negligence.INSPECTION5.1 The Buyer shall inspect the Goods at the place and time of loading if the Goods are collected and unloading if the Goods are delivered but nothing in these Terms shall require the Buyer

to break packaging and/or unpack Goods.5.2 Unless the Seller or the delivery driver is notified forthwith and written notice is received by the Seller within 2 working days of loading or unloading as the case may be of any claim

apparent on reasonable inspection for loss or damage in transit, short delivery, failure to conform to the Contract the Goods will be deemed to have been delivered in accordance withthe delivery documents and accepted by the Buyer and the Buyer shall not be entitled to and waives any right to reject the Goods.

5.3 The Seller’s liability for loss or damage in transit, short delivery, failure to conform to the Contract or apparent on reasonable inspection is limited to supplying the Goods as orderedand the Seller shall not be liable for any damages whatsoever. The Buyer remains liable to pay the full invoice price of other Goods delivered inn accordance with the Contract.

TITLE AND RISK6.1 Risk in the Goods shall pass to the Buyer when the Goods are delivered by the Seller or collected by the Buyer.6.2 The title to the Goods shall remain with the Seller until the Seller has received in cash or cleared funds payment in full of the price of the Goods and any other sums outstanding between

the Buyer and the Seller whether in respect of this Contract or otherwise.6.3 Until title passes the Buyer:-

6.3.1) shall hold the Goods as the Seller’s fiduciary agent and bailee;6.3.2) shall keep the Goods stored separately from any other goods, protected and insured, and shall not interfere with any identification marks, labels, batch numbers or serial

numbers on the Goods;6.3.3) may sell the Goods as principal and not as the Seller’s agent in the ordinary course of the Buyer’s business subject to the following express conditions;(a) that the entire proceeds of any sale or insurance proceeds received in respect of the Goods are held in trust for the Seller and not mixed with any other monies or paid into

an overdrawn bank account and shall at all times be identifiable as the Seller’s money;(b) that the Buyer will at the Sellers request and at the Buyer’s expense assign to the Seller all rights the Buyer may have against its customer; and(c) that the Buyer’s right to sell the Goods may be withdrawn by the Seller on notice at any time and will automatically cease in the event of the Buyer becoming.

6.4 The Seller shall be entitled at any time to recover any or all of the Goods to which it has title and for that purpose the Seller its employees or agents may with such transport as is necessaryenter upon any premises occupied by the Buyer or to which the Buyer has access and where the Goods may be or are believed to be situated.

6.5 The Buyer shall not be entitled to pledge or in any way charge by way of security for any indebtedness, any of the Goods which remain the property of the Seller, but if the Buyer doesso, all monies owing by the Buyer to the Seller shall (without prejudice to any other right or remedy of the Seller) forthwithbecome due and payable.

6.6 Without prejudice to the foregoing none of the Goods are supplied on a ‘Sale or Return’ basis.DATA PROTECTION7.1 If the Buyer is an individual or a group of individuals the Buyer agrees that the Seller may:

7.1.1) Seek, hold and process any information obtained about the Buyer from the Buyer or third parties for the purpose of and as a result of any applications or agreements the Buyerhas with the Seller. This will include a search with a licensed credit reference agency which will keep a record of that search.

7.1.2) Use this information for credit assessment purposes including assessing the Buyer’s credit limit and to administer and operate the credit account to the Buyer and analyse theconduct of that credit account. This may include further searches with licensed credit reference agencies.

7.1.3) Disclose any information the Seller holds about the Buyer to licensed credit reference agencies, other suppliers and creditors to help the Seller and others make credit decisions ;to help prevent or detect fraud or other crimes; to trace debtors; to provide trade references on a confidential basis to the Seller’s agents and sub-contractors; to insurancecompanies for the purpose connected with insurance products that relate or might relate to the Buyers credit account; to any person to whom the Seller proposes to transferits rights and/or responsibilities under this Contract and to the extent the Seller is required or permitted to do so by law.

7.1.4) Hold and use this information during and for 6 years after the trading relationship and thereafter destroy the information except for a record of credit limits and date of andgrounds for account closure.

7.1.5) If the Buyer is a body corporate or incorporate the Seller may access information as above relating to the Buyer’s directors, shareholders or members including searches withlicensed credit reference agencies.

GENERAL8.1 This Contract shall be governed and interpreted according to the Law of England and Wales and the Buyer agrees to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts.8.2 The Seller shall not be liable for any breach of contract delay of failure to perform any of the obligations if the breach delay or failure was due to any cause beyond the Seller’s reasonable

control including without limit industrial action or trade disputes whether involving employees of the Seller or of a third party.8.3 The waiver by the Seller of any breach or default of these Terms shall not be construed as a continued waiver of any subsequent breach of the same or any other provision.8.4 If any clause or sub-clause of these Terms is held by a competent authority to be invalid or unenforceable the validity of the other clauses and sub-clauses of these Terms shall not

be affected and they shall remain in full force and effect.8.5 No person may enforce any of these terms under the Contracts (Rights of the Third Parties) Act 1999.8.6 Any notice required or permitted to be given by either party to the other under these Terms shall be in writing addressed to that other party at its registered office, or principal place

of business, or such other address as may at the relevant time have been notified pursuant to this provision to the party giving the notice and shall be deemed to have been received:8.6.1) if sent by first class post: 2 working days after posting exclusive of the day of posting;8.6.2) if delivered by hand: on the day of delivery;8.6.3) if sent by facsimile transmission: at the time of confirmation of transmission of the entire fax.
