977. Use two strands throughout.
Two pieces 51cm x 7cm white blockweave fabric, 14 blocks to 2.5cm.

on shades.

nstructions
Mark the centre of each piece of fabric lengthwise and widthwise
along a line of holes. Diagram 1 gives a section of the design, centre
ndicated by black arrows which should coincide with the basting
stitches. Each background square on diagram 1 represents one blockof fabric or one cross stitch.
The design is worked throughout in cross stitch and it is important
hat the upper half of all crosses lie in the same direction throughout.
With one long side of each piece of fabric facing, commence the design
centrally, and work following diagram 1 and key to diagram. Repeat
his section three times more to the left. To complete design, work the
right half to correspond. On completion of embroidery, press lightly
on wrong side. To make up, trim fabric to within 1cm of embroidery
on long edges and using machine embroidery work a scallop border on
upper and lower edges. Turn back 1cm on short edges, place to front
of towel and sew in position. Alternatively, turn back 1cm on all sidesand sew in position to front of towel.
Diagram 2. Cross stitch.
Fig 1 - bring the thread through at the lower right-hand side, insert
he needle one block up and one block to the left and bring out one
block down thus forming a half cross, continue in this way to the end
of the row.
Fig 2 - complete the upper half of the cross as shown. Cross stitch
may be worked either from right to left or left to right but it is impor-
ant that the upper half of all crosses should lie in the same direction.
