September’s here already. I would ask what happened to the summer, but perhaps that’s not the best idea in view of the past few months...

However, before we focus on the need for more lighting for longer hours (you’ve got to love winter in the northern hemisphere), we have one last opportunity to revel in the final big events of the season.

As ever, early September is crammed with not-to-be-missed events for the lighting specifier or designer this year, kicking off with PLASA, which will be of great interest to our burgeoning readership of event lighting specialists.

Hot on the heels of PLASA is Tent London, held at the Old Truman Brewery – an event that is growing out of all recognition.

Our round up of the summer season is brought to a conclusion by those stalwarts of the design industry, Decorex and 100% Design, both of which we’re assured by the organisers will feature enough stands from lighting producers to make a trip worthwhile.

In order not to focus entirely on shows and events, this month we’ve devised a virtual cross-cultural debate on the relative merits of LEDs for the commerical sector. TL’s thanks go to the kind folks at Toshiba, Chauvet, Gaash, OCG, Philips, and Neonlite - all of who took time out to debate the issue of ‘Making lighting more energy efficient and cost effective in commercial settings’, from across the miles (TL’s budget not allowing for more than a meeting of minds).

Have you ever thought about branching out and working down under? Of potential special interest to many of our readers – from September for two months only, the organisers of Vivid Sydney 2013 are seeking expressions of interest from international lighting designers, engineering and design individuals and teams for the festival light sculptures, installations and projections for the 2013 event, and have asked TL to spread the word.

Already in its fourth - very successful - year, the NSW Government plans to grow the event in 2013, providing more lighting opportunities and seeking to raise the creativity bar with more innovative designs. Details for submissions - which close in November – are available by visiting www.vividsydney.com. If you’re considering it, do let us know so we can follow up on the process and share your success with the readers.

Seeing doubleMarl International has invested a further £150,000 to double its manufacturing output at its Ulverston site in Cumbria, putting it in a prime position to benefit from the rapid growth of emerging green lighting technology.

Diamond brightCheshire-based Diamond LED Lighting has signed a strategic agreement to become sole UK agent for manufacturer, Viribright. The manufacturer entered the LED market producing commercial grade, retrofit LED lighting products to compete in the domestic market. The agreement will give Diamond responsibility for developing and supplying distribution networks for the new co-branded product range throughout the UK. A variety of products are to be included in the new co-branded range, from LED tubes to replace FL tubes, to dimmable globe lamps to replace the fast disappearing incandescent lamps and dimmable GU10 and MR16 down lights, which use minimal power and can replace 35/50w halogens.

JOINING FORCES Architainment Lighting has become a value added reseller for Philips Dynalite. As a specialist solutions provider of LED systems, controls and lighting accessories, Architainment already deals with other Philips brands, including Selecon and Color Kinetics. By introducing the Dynalite family of energy-efficient, intelligent lighting controls, Architainment is looking to further its ability to provide designers and specifiers with a complete solution. Dynalite offers a wide range of architectural lighting, energy management, and ‘smart home’ control products for offices, retail, hospitality, public spaces, residential, and custom installation. The system has already been installed in some of the world’s best-known venues, including the tallest building in the world, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Lighting the BeebAC-ET has supplied LED-based fixtures from Chroma-Q, PixelRange and GLP to the BBC’s Radio Theatre facility at Broadcasting House. The venue is designed to stage recorded and live performances, including comedy shows, radio programmes, live music, televised and red button events - such as concerts, plus shows broadcast across the BBC’s network. The house lighting rig needed to be extremely flexible to take account of the diverse number of events taking place in the venue, and the need to embrace theatrical, broadcast and multimedia disciplines. It was important that the new LED units were also appropriate to light HD TV and its specific requirements. Extensive research was carried out into all the LED lighting options and Radio Theatre events manager, Mark Diamond and the BBC’s R & D department worked with AC-ET’s Paul Turner to ensure the most suitable fixtures were chosen.

The production line has been specially modified to handle PCB boards of up to 600mm long, the new longer length commonly required to replace conventional lighting products.

Marl is not only ramping up its output of LED lighting modules, but will also enter the electro-mechanical module assembly business, aiming to match offshore pricing with quality, UK-manufactured products.

According to managing director, Adrian Rawlinson: ‘Marl is unique in being able to design and manufacture LED lighting modules entirely under one roof in Ulverston, where most competitors outsource parts of the design or manufacturing process. This gives Marl a short lead time and the ability to bring to market the latest, most efficient LED

lighting technologies ahead of competitors.’ Marl operations director, David Moorhouse added: ‘We see many customers in the UK who would like to use LED lighting in place of less efficient technologies, but they lack the capability to assemble these very specialist devices and the associated circuits. Marl can fill this gap, often providing a bespoke product that is a direct drop-in replacement for the less efficient solution – speeding up the adoption of efficient LED lighting technology.’

The new line has been accommodated at the company’s existing existing premises, which have been refurbished to accommodate the equipment. A number of staff has been retrained to operate the line, which is fully automated, and will run on a 24-hour shift basis.

In the fast-paced business world, getting people together is hard, but multiply that by six and factor in overseas travel and you’re looking at something akin to one of the tasks of Hercules. TL decided that it may just be simpler to harness technology and hold a virtual debate – so we did …

Talking heads

Making lighting more energy efficient & cost effective in commercial settings, including but not exclusively using LEDs.

UNDER DISCUSSION:

TAKING PART:

KatyBryan, Philips Lighting Edward Lees, Toshiba Lighting Systems UK Danny Kalina, Gaash Lighting Michael Brooksbank, Chauvet EuropeSimon Leggett, OCG Lighting Fred Bass, Neonlite International

TL To kick off, how do you think we can best achieve the savings large corporations are looking for when lighting new-build office complexes?

ED: LEDs offer a low-energy, long-life solution for saving energy – and therefore money – on lighting. As well as consuming less energy, the longevity of LED fittings means that they need to be replaced far less frequently than other lighting products.

KATY: LED technology is progressing at a phenomenal rate, becoming more efficient and flexible. But there’s a danger that LED lighting specified before a building is built - may be two or three years out of date by the time the building is occupied. Engaging a lighting supplier in the early stages of the planning process will enable them to share their roadmaps for the future, so that the most up to date and efficient LED technology will be implemented.

E N E R G Y E F F I C I E N T L I G H T I N G

‘Cheaper traditional fittings are like candy – they give us short-term pleasure but in the end we are faced with expensive dentist bills!’

DANIEL: Surely, the main consideration has to be the lighting design. To use the most appropriate lighting system (direct, direct/indirect combination) in order to achieve not only energy savings, but first of all the right solution for visibility, task performance and the occupants’ wellbeing?

KATY: Incorporating a clear business case for LEDs is a key step in the design process. Analysis of the increased capital costs of LED versus the reduced lifecycle costs of the building needs to take place to ensure that LEDs aren’t value engineered out in the construction process, limiting the energy savings to be made.

ED: If you combine LEDs with lighting controls then you start to see even greater savings: Presence detectors ensure that a space is never lit when there is no one in it and daylight-linking means that lighting levels are adjusted in accordance with the amount of natural daylight available, maximising a free resource - the sun. If the two options are combined then offices can be sufficiently lit at all times, without expending any more energy than is necessary.

KATY: Yes, with 75 per cent of a conventional lighting bill wasted on light that simply isn’t needed, the introduction of an intelligent controls system leads to significant saving. A variety of control methods, such as presence detection and daylight harvesting, ensure that energy is not consumed unnecessarily.

FRED: The key lies in making the switch to energy efficient solutions and avoiding a ‘one size fits all’ approach, by using extended features such as dimming and light control to suit the particular needs of a project. The motto has to be ‘light where you need it, when you need it’.

MICHAEL: I agree that LED technology alone in most cases isn’t sufficient to provide total cost saving solutions, although with clever use of dynamic control it can make a big difference.

SIMON: By using natural light as a starting point and maximising it in the building design, and by incorporating controls and sensors in a building-wide lighting control strategy, a new building can benefit from all of the advantages offered by the latest LED technology. LEDs can be very accurately controlled and, if their use is carefully managed, they will last longer, use less energy and produce less heat.

TL What about retrofit for older properties? Can it ever really be as effective as starting over?MICHAEL: Sometimes – yes. There are, however a lot of variables within each design element of a building that have a bearing on the total cost solution. By this I mean the installation, energy efficiency, and maintenance cost for the project, as a whole amortized over the expected life. This is generally easier in commercial projects due to the availability of access for maintenance, which has often been considered by the original architect.

KATY: Surely, retrofitting existing buildings is key to sustainable development? Most of the buildings that already exist today will still be around in 2050 – if we are to meet

our carbon dioxide reduction targets, these buildings must be retrofitted to reduce our demand for electricity. Reducing demand of existing buildings is also a much cheaper option for government than investing in new power stations for increasing energy supply.

DANIEL: But if we believe that the existing lighting system is adequate in respect of all the quality parameters, but inefficient, one has to understand that replacing only the light source doesn’t necessarily mean that the quality parameters will be kept.

FRED: It all comes down to TCO and being able to maintain the authentic style. Retrofit LED can offer energy savings and light control while imitating the look and feel of an older-style installation, which means there’s no need to start over. Product selection is particularly important however.

KATY: LED lighting already plays a key part in the retrofitting of commercial buildings. LED luminaires are designed to easily replace inefficient light fittings – for example, designed to fit within a 600 x 600 panel in an office environment. Retrofitting LED technology can deliver savings of up to 85 per cent compared to traditional technology, so the only question should be, whether to replace just the lamps or the whole luminaire.

ED: If retrofitted lighting solutions are combined with sensible lighting controls then you can achieve really great savings. However, any retrofit project is ultimately limited by the fact that it probably wasn’t designed with minimising energy expenditure in mind and additional investment might be needed to make the necessary changes.

SIMON: Clearly, there are compromises when working with older buildings and legacy systems. However, the latest generation of luminaires and control systems are cost-effective, efficient and simple to install. I think the limitations are often in justifying investment in replacing existing systems in older premises (however inefficient), rather than in the viability of the technology itself.

TL What are the best cost saving solutions for retail currently – bearing in mind the maintenance issues?

DANIEL: Fluorescents - if we can rely on late data claiming around 40000 hours life, based on a 12-hour cycle, which is quite usual in retail – are still good solution. Well-designed LED luminaires (and I mean optically, mechanically and thermally) are promising, provided the $/lumen ratio is good enough. If not, patience is the right solution!

SIMON: Lamps using halogen and other high-heat light sources offer the best opportunity for cost savings, but not solely for the obvious direct savings. Retail spaces normally lack natural ventilation and require significant air conditioning. Shopping centres are often far too warm, due to the amount of lighting, numbers of people and prohibitive cost of air conditioning. By swapping to low-heat light sources, such as LED, owners will see a reduction in lighting, air conditioning and maintenance costs. They’ll also offer their clients a far more comfortable shopping environment!

ED: That’s true. Lighting can account for 20 per cent of a retailer’s energy costs, so minimising the energy consumption of light fixtures can have a significant effect in reducing overall operational expenditure. Many retailers still use halogen lighting, so replacing this with LED fixtures is one way to instantly save costs.

KATY: I think LED is certainly a viable solution for retail – look at the likes of Marks and Spencer and Morrisons,

which have stores entirely lit with LED and benefitting from significant energy saving as a result. Technology is advancing all the time and providing options that just weren’t possible with LED only a few years ago.

ED: In addition to the technological aspect, many retailers, particularly large chains, don’t consider the balance of light in their stores. The windows at the front of an outlet let in plenty of natural daylight, so during the day there is far less need for lighting, while the back of a store will need far more as it would otherwise be in darkness. If this can be taken into consideration when designing lighting - by including daylight linking - then further savings can be made. The ambience of the outlet is improved too. But perhaps even more crucial for busy retailers is the longevity of LEDs: a typical halogen fitting will last for 1,000 to 1,500 hours, while its LED counterpart can last for up to 40,000 hours. It’s pretty clear that the maintenance savings, which can be achieved by replacing halogen with LED, are substantial.

FRED: Of course, many existing lighting products can be upgraded without the need for new fixtures, providing both longer life and reduced maintenance schedules. For the future, we focus on socket-able solutions for easy maintenance and the ability to upgrade.

TL What about colour rendering for the fashion and food sectors – is it being adversely affected by lamps of a lower quality?DANIEL: The answer is simple…yes! Regarding LEDs, I am not sure the CRI system, which was developed mainly for discharge lamps, can reflect the real human appraisal when dealing with fashion and food. It seems to be that the system doesn’t include any subjective parameters in the calculations.

ED: I agree. The difference in colour rendering between technologies is significant.

FRED: Yes it is, users aren’t fully aware of what is available and the industry needs to be more active in educating people to better understand what is possible. LEDs offer customers flexibility as they can be tailored to meet specific application needs.

ED: Halogen delivers 100 per cent accurate colour rendering, while LED delivers approximately 80 per cent. However, fluorescent and compact fluorescent can reduce the accuracy of rendering even further to only 60 per cent - especially red - making distinguishing the actual colours of objects particularly difficult.

SIMON: Unfortunately, many retailers are used to incandescent light sources, where CRI is rarely an issue.

This has led to a lack of understanding of the importance of CRI and consequent disastrous product selection.MICHAEL: It’s fair to say that due to the drive to compete, there are some lower standard products out there. While the initial savings are obvious, the total cost solution is again the ultimate consideration. CRI is often a good mark of standard in these situations.

KATY: Colour rendering consistency is really important in retail - after all ensuring products look enticing to customers is key to generating sales. In fashion, seeing the real colour of an item is particularly significant. The concern with lower quality products is that the lamps tend to degrade inconsistently and before the end of life, affecting the overall look and feel of the store.

ED: If 100 per cent accuracy in rendering is essential then, at the moment, halogen is the technology to opt for… or perhaps high end metal halide? However, halogen isn’t a very energy efficient solution. Fundamentally, a choice needs to be made between maximal colour rendering and maximising energy savings. Do you need 100 per cent colour rendering or is 80 per cent accurate enough? For the food sector, 80 per cent colour rendering is probably sufficient, meaning that LED is a great solution as energy consumption can be minimised.DANIEL: I have heard that a new system (CQS) is in the development stage? TL So what about outdoor use: what’s the best option for, say – street lighting in inner cities, multi-storey car parks and public parks/gardens?

KATY: For outdoor use, it’s critical to use white light, which LED technology can deliver very well and efficiently. It’s important to consider how lighting can help contribute to a safe and attractive environment.

FRED: LED lighting has a number of benefits, which make it particularly suited to outdoor use: white light solutions provide improved safety thanks to better facial recognition;

DANIEL: Street lighting looks like an ideal application - mainly due to the high maintenance costs and all around operations involved. BUT again, quality… I have hardly ever seen a glare-free low mounting-height installation. Even if calculations and measuring equipment show low and sometimes no glare, our eyes and brains are able to discriminate the milimetric size of each emitter - and especially when using lens optics, the result is glare!

FRED: LEDs’ long life and reliability can help to reduce the need for the difficult maintenance often associated with street lighting.

MICHAEL: This is still an area very much in development and LED has a little way to go before being completely dominant. HID will be around for a little while yet for high brightness, larger coverage outdoor applications, in my opinion.

KATY: Many local authorities are simply switching the streetlights off at night – which is great for their pocket but is not so great for society. I’d be less likely to walk into the town centre at night if it wasn’t well lit. I’d opt to take my car instead if I didn’t feel safe walking. If everyone did that, carbon emissions would actually rise and not fall! We’d also create areas where people didn’t feel safe, as poor lighting has been linked to increased crime rates.

ED: Absolutely! For inner city street lighting, making sure that sufficient light is always available is the most important consideration. While metal halide solutions are a popular and sound option, their light output can decrease over time, and their colour can shift.

SIMON: Durability is crucial in these environments. A combination of long-life light sources in appropriate, robust luminaires will reduce maintenance and prevent damage. Latest generation LED and induction light sources are both good candidates for this application.

TL Do you believe there’s still a viable alternative to the LED for general commercial use (offices, shops, public buildings etc)?

DANIEL: For the coming years, yes - fluorescents and short arc ceramic metal halides are viable. But perhaps we should be asking for how long?

ED: I agree. Ceramic metal halide fittings are probably the best option if LED isn’t under consideration. They’re still very efficient and compact, with the ability to produce good light quality. However, they can’t easily be dimmed without a change of colour, and won’t restart instantly in the event of a power cut. LEDs restart and provide 100 per cent output almost instantly.

Fluorescent fittings are still effective, though it’s important to opt for the T5 spec rather than the T8, as T5 fittings produce the greatest amount of light per

unit of power. They’re long life too - although not as long as LED - and can be dimmed if they’re set up properly. Additionally, compact fluorescent is also still a viable alternative, but both have very poor colour rendering, some issues with deep dimming and certainly aren’t the choice for use with presence detector systems. But they are efficient and cost effective - the workhorses of commercial lighting applications.

FRED: T5 fluorescent offers good value for money, whereas high power HID’s suit areas where high lumen levels are required. I believe we must look at the lighting code again, and integrate much higher use of LED task lighting, then reduce the overall levels and only use light where needed.

SIMON: I don’t really think there’s a viable alternative. The latest high frequency fluorescent systems are certainly very efficient and the fixtures have evolved into very complete designs but I wouldn’t consider them unless there was no suitable LED fixture available. But certainly, less efficient light sources may be necessary where an extremely high lumen package is required from a very compact light source - there are still significant limitations for LEDs in this area.

MICHAEL: Of course, there’s always an alternative. Is it viable however? You have to take each project on merit and calculate all the aspects for total cost solution. Traditional lighting technologies are certainly not dead yet, and LED still has a long way to go in certain applications. But overall I would say that the scales are most definitely starting to tip in the favour of LED in most cases now.

KATY: Surely, the key to any successful lighting project is to really understand the client’s needs, and to assess whether the lighting solution proposed meets the end user’s requirements? The real benefit of LED technology is only realised when the right solution is used for the appropriate application. There are still cases where alternatives might be a suitable choice, but with the rapid advances occurring in LED this is unlikely to be the case for long.

TL So what about lighting controls? Would installing control systems in much smaller premises than is perhaps current practice, make enough cost savings to make it worthwhile to say, the independent retailer, small business owner or

boutique hotelier?

DANNY: I believe so, yes. There are small, low-cost control systems for presence and light harvesting available, and their ROI is quite promising.

ED: Presence detection is a straightforward and relatively low-cost solution for reducing unnecessary expense on lighting. It can be used in toilets for example, as so many people forget to switch off the light. Daylight-linking systems can also be beneficial - even for smaller businesses - as they make use of the sun as a free resource and don’t have to be a massive cost burden in implementation.

KATY: You do have to remember that to use a lighting control system for the sole purpose of energy saving in small premises would result in a longer payback period than the standalone lighting controls solutions available. So consideration needs to be given to the entire solution and not just to installing controls.

FRED: For smaller premises, controls must be simple and easy to use. Day and night settings and some presence detection may be all that’s required. TCOs need to be calculated, but in principle yes, it can make sense.

MICHAEL: I believe lighting control is still the most overlooked aspect of lighting design and in most cases a well-considered programmed solution will present savings on energy efficiency, maintenance and most importantly, human error and ignorance!

TL What’s most important to the specifier – and ultimately the customer - cost savings or energy reduction? And if cost is top of the list, is there a way to re-educate them to look at energy savings as paramount?

ED: Financial considerations will always be top of any business’s agenda, and energy savings lead to cost savings, so minimising expense on energy is an important way to save money. The key is educating businesses about long-term savings and payback: the initial outlay of installing new lighting will be paid back through the cost savings it delivers. Once it’s paid for itself, the lighting will then allow the business to save money on an on-going basis through the reduction in energy consumption.

FRED: Cost continues to be a main factor for the customer, which means we definitely should continue to re-educate on subjects such as TCO and the payback time. The energy saving calculator is a useful tool in this process, highlighting the payback time and overall cost saving. One aspect we need to be aware of is that, as technology progresses, the cost of LED solutions becomes more and more competitive.

MICHAEL: Of course, most people still only look at the bottom line - goes without saying. Which is why it’s critical that we ensure that a ‘total cost solution’ is borne in mind. Re-education is, of course part of this, but there is still along way to go with LED in particular. Specifiers are only just starting to get to grips with all the various complications of measurement and suitability for application, and the customer makes the job harder still by using historical valuation for lighting budget provision. I believe this will change in time, but the whole lighting community is in the process of re-education and it takes time to filter through.

KATY: Being concerned only with cost savings on the initial capital expenditure is short sighted. Manufacturers are working with customers to look at the lifecycle costs of lighting. Cheaper traditional fittings are like candy – they give us short-term pleasure but in the end we are faced with expensive dentist bills! LED technology might cost a little more, but financial tools, such as net present value will soon show the savings over the lifetime of the project.

FRED: On another note, companies become increasingly focused on saving energy due to EU regulations and the need to be mindful of their carbon footprint. Many have specific targets they need to hit in that area, and using LEDs is an immensely effective way to reduce carbon emissions.

DANIEL: I believe it’s energy reduction - but always at a

reasonable cost, and as always, not sacrificing the quality of the lighting system or the users’ wellbeing.

SIMON: Specifiers tend to look at overall fitness for purpose and propose a generic solution, although they frequently leave enough ambiguity to allow significant variations in the final installed product! When submitting a tender, installers look at cost above all else and so will propose the lowest cost product that approximates the original specified item; this leads to the installation of lowest cost items, which frequently don’t meet the customer’s aspirations.

Building operators look at initial purchase price and operating cost over time as a combined cost of ownership, whereas specifiers and installers are far more concerned with initial cost of purchase. There is clearly a conflict here and it must be addressed by a method of projecting and classifying fixture operating costs, including energy consumption, and making this element an integral part of the specification.

TL What, in your opinion, is the single largest benefit of the LED?

KATY: LED technology is exciting. Not only does it offer extensive energy and maintenance savings – it looks good too. The look and feel of a lighting design isn’t compromised by the need to save energy and cost.

DANIEL: If I can choose only one parameter, then it’s lifespan... but please consider the electronics - the driver. Although we might be surprised if LEDs reach their theoretical limit of efficacy - then I might replace my chosen parameter! ED: I must agree with Daniel. If I had to choose one, then I would say that the minimised maintenance derived from their impressive longevity is the biggest benefit of LEDs.

FRED: The saving offered in terms of both electricity and energy. These mean both a reduced cost of ownership and a lower carbon footprint.

MICHAEL: For me it is about the total package, but if you had to pin me down, I would say it was the scalability. In the early days of LED, the company  I was working for at the time came up with a wireless, rechargeable, colour-changing champagne bucket for promotional use. For me, it epitomised all the benefits of LED. You couldn’t do it with any other technology — low energy battery operation, no heat to melt the ice, colour changing, durability and most importantly, size!

SIMON: Progress. The emergence of LED technology has opened up a new creative era in the lighting world, attracting extremely talented people and turning a relatively conservative business into a vibrant and exciting sector. The benefits are clear to see: new designs, greater efficiency, less waste … the list goes on.

-based Gaash Lighting has been participating in a pilot

project with Eltodo-Citelum, one of the leading companies in the Czech electro-technical industry, which is involved in a wide variety of energy saving and green projects across Europe, and is responsible for much of the municipal lighting in the country. The project was initiated to demonstrate the abilities and advantages of LED lighting and the effectiveness of its use over time, emphasising the power parameters and cost savings potential.

‘The project in Prague demonstrated the benefits of advanced and innovative street lighting, which combines modern design, reduced energy consumption

and LED lighting,’ explained Ing Jirka Ska’la, Eltodo-Citelum’s deputy director. ‘Gaash

participated in the project with us, and has been chosen as one of the

finalists, thanks to the quality of its Venus LED and its proven ability.’

The project provided a number of companies with the opportunity to illuminate an entire city street in the Czech capital. Gaash supplied

it’s Venus LED fitting – a luminaire designed specifically for lighting

streets, public spaces, parks and open areas where good visibility is important – and

importantly, from a cost savings point of view, where lighting is often required for long periods when few people potentially benefit. Venus offers high quality lighting while reducing overall energy costs – the perfect match for the Prague pilot. Venus, with its internal branded LED module, was created by Gaash’s experienced team of lighting professionals, who developed the new luminaire to adhere to strict international standards. The fittings were installed in a street close by the famed Charles Square, where they immediately made an impact on visibility after dark.

‘Launching the Venus LED is part of our efforts to maintain our position as a leading player in the field of lighting solutions,’ commented Asaf Cikman, Gaash Lighting’s general manager. The company has already seen the benefits of the Czech project, as Cikman continued: ‘Venus LED emphasises Gaash’s innovation and quality, which is widely recognised by the international market. We have already received first orders from several European clients who expressed great enthusiasm.’

Cikman added that Venus LED was ideal for municipalities and local authorities, which were looking for intelligent street lighting solutions that are decorative, economical and energy saving.

A newly launched street fitting using energy efficient LEDs has been named as one of the finalists in an international pilot project commissioned by the Czech city of Prague

VingCard Elsafe has announced a collaboration with Lutron to develop a total guestroom control solution package for luxury hotels, which integrates Lutron’s lighting, drapery and shade control modules with VingCard Elsafe’s Orion energy management system, as well as door locks, electronic safes and minibars. Using this solution, hotels can provide their guests with total in-room comfort and increase energy efficiency with the option to automatically turn lights on, adjust shades and the temperature when the room becomes occupied. It will also automatically turn lights off, adjust shades, and re-set the temperature when the room is vacant.

Through advanced occupancy-sensing technology, hotels can expect to experience a 20-30%1 reduction in energy expenditures through the combined savings produced by light and temperature controls in unoccupied rooms.

‘More and more, the global hotel industry is demanding an integrated in-room light and temperature control solution that can help manage energy more efficiency, while ensuring guest comfort and enhancing their guests´ in-room experience,’ said Tim Shea, president of ASSA ABLOY Hospitality.

School saversEnergys Group has announced a partnership with Utility Rentals to help schools reduce lighting costs through a funding scheme for educational facilities. The scheme allows the school to pay for its equipment from the energy savings achieved.

As it works exclusively with the education sector, Utility Rentals lease is designed with schools in mind and can be paid for using the school’s revenue budget. Flexible rental terms are available for schools and rentals can be structured in line with budgets.

Kevin Cox, technical director at Energys Group, commented: ‘There are still thousands of schools using old, inefficient fluorescent lighting and recent budget-cuts make the funding of upgrades almost impossible. The Utility Rental lease scheme, which we will deliver in partnership with Smart Eco Energy, offers an innovative solution to funding challenges: instant energy savings with no up-front costs. Using this scheme we can specify the correct solution for the school using a mix of retrofit technologies, new light fittings and LED, and deliver it without any need for capital investment from the school – and in most cases there is a significant cash benefit due to the dramatically reduced energy bills’.

Under scheme, all of the lighting equipment is warranted for the duration of the lease period. Supply and fit is included, and on-going maintenance can be included in the package if needed.

25 years of inspiration Toshiba has announced its planned extended patronage of the Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) for a further 10 years, through to 2021. The renewed partnership means the Gallery will continue to illustrate the history of Japanese art and craftsmanship in order to educate and encourage visitors to the museum and contemporary designers.

The Toshiba Gallery was opened in 1986 and since then has provided a showcase for the V&A’s internationally important

collection of Japanese art and design. It contains a wide range of treasures from across the ages of Japanese history, ranging from the sixth Century to the present day, and includes displays of Japanese swords and armour, netsuke, wood-block prints, textiles, lacquer and ceramics.

The extension also provides the opportunity for Toshiba to demonstrate the very latest in Japanese technological design. The company has installed state-of-the-art LED lighting in the Gallery to illuminate the

beautiful architecture of the vaulted ceiling, and also inside the exhibit space where track mounted LED lamps have been used to replace short-life, less efficient halogen lamps. The new lighting will significantly reduce energy and maintenance costs associated with lighting, and help the V&A to meet its carbon reduction targets.

Martin Roth, director of the museum said: ‘The V&A is thrilled to celebrate Toshiba’s renewed commitment to the Japanese Gallery a further 10 years. The museum’s partnership

with Toshiba has been one of our most important and long established. This further support will ensure the Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art continues to showcase vibrant new displays and the V&A’s outstanding collections. We are already benefiting from the improvements brought about by the new Toshiba lighting in the Gallery.’

RETAIL THERAPY

etailers up and down the land are realising the benefits of changing some, if not all of their lighting to incorporate LEDs into the display mix.

The cost benefits alone - particularly when maintenance, re-lamping and reduced requirements for air-conditioning are taken into account – make it a worthwhile exercise, especially as the technology improves. And with the added benefits of improved colour rendition – so important for both food and fashion - less spoilage in food retailing, why wouldn’t they start making the change?

NEXT ON THE LISTHigh street retailer, Next is leading the way with an enormous order for 90,000 LED luminaires to replace 35W IRC dichroic lamps across all of its UK stores. The order – worth a cool £4m – will see Projection Lighting take on one of the largest LED replacement programmes in the UK retail sector to date.

An unusually-detailed specification was issued by Next, followed by a weighted E-auction and a trial of Projection Lighting’s AlphaLED luminaires in six stores to prove payback. Following on from the successful trial, an order was placed, and the first of three deliveries over a six-month period is scheduled for this month.

The testing product specification from Next covered every aspect of the requirement for LED-based recessed downlights, including a minimum five-year warranty to cover lumen depreciation and colour shift over 50,000 hours, lifetime data supported by independent testing, efficiency, beam angles, colour rendition, safety compliance, packaging and transport.

‘This is one client who knew what they were buying,’ said Jeff Stephens, director at Projection Lighting. ‘It’s the most well informed specification I have ever seen from a customer, and with the weighted E-auction, it takes due diligence to a new level.’

Retailers are waking up to the fact that the ubiquitous LED really is the way ahead for in-store display lighting, especially when it’s combined with control systems

‘Tryka Flexistrip is powerful and adaptable, ideal for enhancing the stunning aesthetics of the dome’

Right: Changi City Point, ChinaBelow: Clayton Square, Liverpool

LIVERPOOL IN LIGHTSClayton Square is Liverpool’s newest shopping mall, housing a mix of fashion, lifestyle and leisure brands with a burgeoning food and drink offering.

The mall features a glass-canopied roof, with a central dome and series of glazed arches, which span the space.

To illuminate the feature, 350m of Tryka Flexistrip has been used to beautiful effect, highlighting the dramatic arches and domes sited high above shoppers’ heads.

Flexistrip is Tryka’s high grade IP67-rated LED strip lighting system, which is available in both RGB and single colour versions. It can be specified with two power options - 7.2w and 14.4w per metre - providing the potential for a wider variety of uses.

Studiotech of Stockport designed and installed the scheme, which included highlighting the giant central dome with four Tryka Module 36 LED RGB spotlights.

‘Tryka Flexistrip is powerful and adaptable, ideal for enhancing the stunning aesthetics of the dome,’ commented Studiotech’s Tim Ashley.

CZECH IT OUTIt’s not just UK retailers who are seeing the light when it comes to LEDS. Anolis LED fixtures have been specified to illuminate both the interior and exterior of the impressive central feature at the Nová Karolina centre in Ostrava.

The new 100m-euro development is one of the largest inner-city development projects in the Czech Republic. The spankingly smart and spacious, multi-level environment was designed by architect, Har Hollands from T+T Design, working with Czech architects K4 from Brno.

The frustum (truncated triangle) shaped centrepiece creates a sense of drama and spectacle right at the heart of the busy space. Hollands proposed an initial lighting design for the 36.5x35x22m conical shape, and main construction contractor, Gemo recommended Anolis.

Anolis’ brand manager Petr Kolmaka produced several options, all of them energy efficient, to achieve the dynamic effect that Hollands wanted - a fixture bright enough to register during the day, and the entire installation had to be energy efficient and ‘green’.

The interior is illuminated with 32 pieces of Anolis ArcPad 94 RGBW EPS, a special fixture with separate, rather than integral power supply. These are positioned on four ledges at ceiling height around the base of the space, and the beams focused to cross one another and wash upwards, giving a smooth even colouration up the fascias, with eight ArcPad 94s per side. With all 32 ArcPad 94s on at full, they use 8.5 kW of power, however the standard power consumption (for 97% of the running time) is just 4kW, which is definitely carbon conscious!

Page 40: Total Lighting September 2012

40 www.tlmagazine.co.uk SEPTEMBER 2012

Another stipulation was that the lighting scheme should generate minimal heat and not increase the need for extra air conditioning. The Anolis LED scheme ticked that box, added to which was the consideration for long lifetime and minimal maintenance required, which was essential as the fixtures are difficult to access.

They also had to be tightly focused to allow the bottom sections on all four sides of the cone to be used for a projection show that runs all day. Two standard colours – blue and white – have been programmed initially, representing the corporate colours of the Czech managing company, Multi Development.

Outside, 16 ArcPad Xtreme RGBW units with custom optics (half fitted with 23 degree optics and the other half with asymmetric 23-6 degree lenses.) are lighting the exterior of the centrepiece on all four sides.

Both inside and out, the installations have their own control PC-based Robe CyberCue architectural system controls, which are run in standalone mode. The exterior scheme is triggered by sensor, so works when it becomes dark, and the interior lighting switches on.

Petr Kolmaka remarked: ‘I am extremely proud to be involved in this project. Anolis is a Czech brand seen in some of the highest profile installations worldwide, and so it is very special to see it in action on its home territory. It’s also good that proper attention is being given to the importance of lighting in Ostrava’s on-going redevelopment plans.’

A CASE IN POINTChangi City Point, a new shopping mall located in the heart of China’s Changi Business Park has been described as the ‘Garden City of the East’ due to the unusual inclusion of flora and fauna in and around it. An important element of the project was to ensure the mall was as green as possible.

Charles Chong, general manager of Singapore- based Yongfu International was tasked with

incorporating wireless lighting sensors at a very late stage in the build and fit-out programme, after it was discovered that lights were coming on automatically when there was no reason for them.

He explained: ‘There are several skylights located in the interior of the shopping mall offering natural light to illuminate the interior as part of the energy saving programme implemented for the building.’

EnOcean sensors and receivers were utilised to create the perfect light settings, as Chong commented: ‘Only one circuit of lights turns on for the mall interior. The aim is to light up the remaining two circuits at each wing only when the lux levels fall.

‘As this is a newly completed building, all of the wiring and light fixtures have already been installed, and it would be costly to install conventional sensors and undertake rewiring - and redo the ceiling works too. Moreover, the timing for the opening of the shopping mall was very tight, for which reason the proposal for using EnOcean sensors and receivers was adopted.’

At the various skylight points located on levels one and two, PEHA sensors were installed. Thermokon SRC ADO receivers were integrated into the various riser electrical rooms located at each end of the building, about 70m away. Antenna cables of 20m length were procured to cable up the receivers.

Chong added: ‘A point to note is that the Level One skylight obtains its electrical supply from the basement riser. An SRE repeater from Thermokon has consequently been included to enhance the signal from the sensor to the antenna.’

Installation took just two days and meant no rewiring was needed at the light fixtures, only cabling for the receivers and antenna. Now the shopping mall’s second and third circuits will only light up during cloudy days and at night time, when the lux level falls below a preset value.

‘I am extremely proud to be involved in this project. Anolis is a Czech brand seen in some of the highest profile installations worldwide’

Philipswww.philips.com/fortimo

Philips introduces the second generation of Fortimo LED Twistable downlight module (TDLM) offering a 10-25% system energy efficiency upgrade.Fortimo LED Twistable DLM 1100 lm (Zhaga certified) and 2000 lm second generation modules offer energy efficiency and quality white light. The Fortimo LED Twistable DLM is a complete system, consisting of a module with integrated driver and lamp holder, and adheres to industry standards. The 1100lm module is the second LED module from Philips that is Zhaga certified. The Fortimo LED Twistable DLM is ideal to build into luminaires for use in general down lighting applications and is therefore often used as the alternative for 50 W LV halogen and the 2x 18 W / 2 x 26W CFL downlights. The new generation can simply be placed onto the existing lamp holder which was installed with the first generation of the Fortimo LED Twistable downlight module. Also the existing heatsink and reflector can be maintained. The energy efficiency upgrades of both the 1100 and 2000 lumen Twistable DLM modules range from 71-76 lm/W. And as these modules are part of the Fortimo future proof promise, this means that the energy efficacy upgrade of the LEDs is done without changing the dimensions, shape, lumen output or optical performance of the system. As the modules are easy to install and service, both in new and existing twistable downlight luminaires, they are ideal for semi professional applications and the wholesale channel. There is not even a need to remove the reflector or open the ceiling.

Faster, cheaper and better optics?‘Plastic optics for lighting fixtures can now be custom manufactured by a one-step process, which affords flexibility and freedom of design at prices competitive with injection molding,’ is the claim being made by LUXeXceL. The company is offering its patented Printoptical 3D printing service for on-demand manufacturing of optics directly from a CAD model, with no need for expensive molds or tooling.

Photopia software from LTI Optics is among the most widely used tools in the lighting industry for creation and verification of such CAD models. With Photopia as a tool for parametric optics design and LUXeXceL’s printoptical technology for mass customised manufacturing, lighting fixture manufacturers can get products to market faster and offer a broader range while cutting development costs and working capital requirements. Mark Jongewaard, president of LTI Optics, explains: ‘We originally developed Photopia to enable simulation study of alternative designs prior to incurring the high expense of tooling for an optic to be physically produced. Now as a software partner for LUXeXceL’s manufacturing services, Photopia has a second value proposition to enable rapid custom variations of a proven design for immediate manufacture, yielding fast times to market for new products, rapid adaptation to changed requirements, and low cost innovation of niche and mass-customised lighting products.’ According to Richard van de Vrie, CEO of LUXeXceL: ‘The combination of Photopia software and Printoptical manufacturing is the digitisation of plastic optics design and fabrication. A Photopia design becomes a digital mold, enabling any correction or change to be implemented immediately. The manufacturing service is on-demand, so inventory is also digital, requiring minimal working capital and eliminating write-offs. Using Photopia as a design tool for creation of optics to be fabricated with Printoptical technology, LUXeXceL offers the lighting industry a way to launch more new products, get them to market sooner, innovate with previously impossible design features, and earn higher profit margins.’

Website of the weekProlyte Group has created a new website for its Litestructures brand, as part of a new marketing initiative to increase awareness of the creative project work undertaken by the company.

In the two years since the merger, the brand has evolved into a special projects division of the Group. Litestructures has extensive experience designing and manufacturing creative structures across a variety of sectors, from live events and brand realisation through to art and architecture, prompting an online

portal to showcase a selection of successful bespoke projects. The website - www.litestructures.com - provides information on the Litestructures brand and the innovative solutions it offers. There is a facility to view and download case studies, and the opportunity to interact with the team.

Miles Marsden, UK sales director of special projects, said: ‘This is a time of renewed focus for Litestructures as the vehicle for our special projects work. The new website provides a dynamic platform for us to demonstrate our ability to transform ideas into reality, with striking results.’

AND THE WINNER IS ...Jands has announced the winners of a competition celebrating the launch of its Vista L5 flagship media and lighting control console – the latest addition to the Vista range. The competition to win a MacBook Pro running the innovative Vista v2 software was sponsored by Jands’ distribution partners for Europe & the Middle East - A.C. Entertainment Technologies, and North America - A.C. Lighting, and open to industry professionals in these territories. The competition proved extremely popular, and the lucky winners, who were selected at random from entrants who correctly answered a competition question, were David Weeks from the UK and Andrew Anguiano from the US. Weeks works at the 1500-capacity live music venue, 53 Degrees in Preston, UK. He hadn’t used Jands Vista before, and his first impression of the Vista L5 was enthusiastic: ‘To say that I’m quite impressed is an understatement. The way the screen is laid out, it all made sense – it’s a lovely bit of design. I will now be quite frustrated with our current house desk.’ He visited AC-ET’s Leeds office to collect his prize and received a full demonstration on the Vista L5 after which he commented: ‘The power of Vista by comparison takes this to a whole new level.’

The US winner, Andrew Anguiano is a student who works at the Life Bridge Church co-ordinating technicals and media. He has had considerable experience with Jands Vista and regularly creates shows using a Vista S3. He said: ‘I think Jands produces a great product with Vista. Their technical services team has always been extremely helpful in answering questions.’

the first-time visitor crosses the threshold of The Royal Hospital, they know they’re in for something a little bit special. The entrance to Decorex is a coveted space, where designers have vied with one another over the years to produce the most memorable or outlandish foyer designs.

Great excitement has followed the announcement that for the 35th anniversary edition, Dame Vivienne Westwood will be taking up the flowered, velveteen or potentially Axminster-covered gauntlet. Of course, the design will remain a closely guarded secret until opening day, but visitors are guaranteed a treat, that’s for sure.

Decorex brand manager, Simone du Bois is excited by the prospect of the upcoming event: ‘In this our 35th edition of Decorex, we are thrilled with the diversity of our 2012 exhibitors, who range from inspired contemporary design to the epitome of traditional craftsmanship. The link they all share is their unfailing commitment to produce the very best quality, destined to become collectables for future generations. From great British names like the Royal Warrant holder, Wilkinsons, Hector Finch, Best & Lloyd and Sharon Marston to equally impressive names from Europe, like Terzani, Le Deun and Patrizia Garganti, lighting specialist exhibitors have a strong presence at this years event.’

Rebecca Scott STAND C88A

With a cosmopolitan mix of furniture, accessories and decorative lighting on display, the Rebecca Scott stand will feature a stunning collection of high quality lighting products, furniture and accessories, drawing on traditional manufacturing techniques and using the highest quality materials to create designs that can be found from private residences to palaces – and even the odd super-yacht - around the world. Allegretto, by Fine Art Lamps is available from Rebecca Scott. Inspired by a musical tempo that is briskly bold yet relaxed, like a conductor directing his orchestra with artful movements of his baton, the designer made confidently bold, swift strokes at his easel in drawing Allegretto. The lines of each piece make distinct, graceful gestures that timelessly span yesterday, today, and tomorrow, as the curves change direction with elegant simplicity. The collection is available in a platinised silver leaf or burnished gold leaf finishes with subtle brown highlights and hand-sewn shades of off-white textured linen. Selected items have shades with a pierced metal gallery in matching finish, adding a striking dimension to the shades. The collection comprises ceiling, wall, table and floor fixtures and fittings.www.rebeccascott.co.uk

Craig Jenkins Designs STAND J270

As with all of Craig Jenkins Designs’ fittings, the C2-11 is hand made in Italy. The finish is a rustic bronze developed by the designer specifically for the collection and left un-lacquered, which adds to the authentic aged look of the piece. The standard size is 100cm high x 60cm diameter, but as with most of the company’s designs, it is made to order so can be sized to accommodate specific requirements. As standard, the fitting comes with black cloth shades and utilises six 40W E14 lamps.www.craigjenkinsdesigns.com

Tent London, one of the largest events during the London Design Festival, will be returning to the Old Truman Brewery in September

CAMPINGoutnot held under canvas, and there’s no camping equipment on display to the best of my knowledge, but

Tent London is one of the most captivating, multi-faceted events taking place during the glut of shows that make up the capital’s design fest. Tent London really is one not to be missed, as attested to by the 19,000-plus trade buyers who make a point of stopping by. The sheer variety of products available, from furniture to textiles, ceramics to accessories – and of course, lighting – from 200 international exhibitors makes it a must-visit event.

One thing the visitor can be assured of at Tent London is originality – as with everything else on display, the lighting will be innovative, designer-led and unlike anything we’ve come across before, so the perfect place to source ideas for contemporary one-off projects.

IT’SMy name is TomTom is inspired by the movie, E.T., according to the designer, Kwang Hoo Lee who attempted to make light a secret friend. Tom has been designed to resemble a human by the designer, in order to brighten more than just a space; he created Tom to brighten the hearts of users. Interestingly, Tom even has clothes to help his humans bond with him. Tom wears a shade by Studio Inbetween... www.hoosdesign.com

Above: Event founder, Jimmy MacDonald explains more: ‘Tent London and now Super Brands London (our serious trade offering for architects and interior designers), have captured the imagination of the more creative design brands who find the ex-industrial volume of the Old Truman Brewery the perfect backdrop for their furniture, products and lighting.

‘The growth in the number of international brands making the migration from West to East London for this year’s edition is staggering. Tent remains fresh because the content changes by about 50 per cent annually; this year the change continuous but we’re adding more global brands.

‘We are enthused by the mix and already collaborations are taking place between Tent’s exhibitors and Super Brands exhibitors.’

Among the plethora of great new lights on display, here’s a taster to whet your appetite:

Counting numbers 490 is a compact, elegant desk lamp by Group Design that utilises the latest in LED technology to create a highly functional and energy efficient luminaire. The clean, simple form grew from a desire to strip the desk lamp back to its very essence, keeping the components and manufacturing processes to an absolute minimum to reduce its environmental footprint. The lamp uses a highly efficient 3W LED that has a lifetime rating of around 40,000 hours. The wide beam angle produced by the un-lensed LED achieves an excellent spread of consistent, glare-free light. Three-stage dimming, controlled via touch sensor, offers flexibility.www.groupdesign.co.uk

A perennial favourite for the creative world to meet, greet and see what everyone else has been up to, 100% Design is about to open its doors on another show, no doubt showcasing some interesting new talent in the process

SHOW STOPPERS

The 100% Design umbrella has expanded still further this year, to cover six shows-within-a-show: 100% interiors; 100% office; 100% kitchens&bathrooms; 100% eco, design&build; Emerging brands; and Future Living.

Lighting will, as usual feature across all areas, although sadly, it doesn’t seem to warrant a section of it’s own at the event. However, show director, William Knight is positive that the lighting element will be an exciting addition to the show. He told TL: ‘This year, 100% Design covers a wide breadth of product, driven by technology and design. Nowhere is the fusion between the two more apparent than in the lighting exhibitors we’re showcasing. ‘Whether it’s controlling a light by smart phone, integrating LEDs or pushing the boundaries of OLEDs with alternative and creative materials, the range of lighting exhibitors and solutions are a must-see at this year’s 100% Design.’

Flex Connectors’ flex7 System Lights Up Blue Plaque BuildingFlex Connectors’ flex7 lighting connection and control System was recently installed over 6 floors at 4 Carlton Gardens, London. The system was designed by Stinton Jones Consulting Engineers LLP and installed by Contractor Langley Electrical of Harlow. Flex Connectors were selected for the project due to their user friendly design, quick installation time and the fact that they do not require any

commissioning. flex7 controls were networked to provide a global On/Off per floor. The controls are programmed to monitor the levels of daylight in a room, and dim the lights down when natural light is sufficient. When the room is unoccupied lights will automatically switch off after a pre-set timeout. This ensures that unnecessary energy usage is kept to a minimum at all times. The building lies within a conservation area, and has much historical significance. It served as headquarters for General Charles de Gaulle during World War 2, who set up the Free French Forces Headquarters there in 1940. It was awarded a blue plaque in 1984 to commemorate their use of the building. Another plaque outside the building details the historic radio broadcast he gave upon first arriving in Britain.

Shining on the Jubilee For the Diamond Jubilee, Illuminate Design lit five stages in Battersea Park for live acts. Project manager, Robin Shephard-Blandy said: ‘For simplicity, the smaller spaces were lit by six-lamp bars with local six-way dimming. At The Diamond Geezer, we installed 12 Chauvet Colourdash Tri battens - they’re able to mix stage washes and achieve an alternating red-white-blue preset. The main stage required a full production rig, including approximately 60 fixtures including moving lights, generics and LED PARs and battens for the multiple live acts.’

COLOUR ME LIGHTERXL Events supplied LED screens and scenic video, an HD PPU, Catalyst playback and 4 HD cameras for the high profile 2012 L’Oréal Professional Colour Trophy Grand Final. The event was staged in the Great Room at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, where 1000 guests enjoyed two high energy catwalk shows - funky Rebel London by Peter Gray and the RUSH Artistic Team’s amazingly colourful, animated Tryptych, and the presentation of the finalists awards. XL project manager, Paul Wood was working for Kate Wright and Lisa Shenton from technical production company Papilo, alongside show designer Bruce French. XL Events has worked on the L’Oréal Colour Trophy for the last six years. This was its third consecutive year at the prestigious central London location. French’s set design featured a long curved white catwalk that stretched from one side of the room to the other.

Donate to the dream Fundraising has begun on an extraordinary project to take Bruce Munro’s iconic Field of Light installation back to its birthplace: Uluru, at the heart of the Australian red desert.

This will be Munro’s largest installation to date, a monumental piece consisting of a quarter of a million stems of light, covering one square kilometre of land.

Munro has just returned from Longwood Gardens in the US where his smash hit one-man-show continues until 29 September.

Field of Light at Uluru will be entirely solar powered, and use 3,290 kilometres of optic fibre and 165 kilometres of recycled 12mm acrylic tube. Munro aims to devote considerable energy and resources to preserving and protecting the land. ‘We’re going to be extraordinarily careful, and we’re using 500 LED solar-powered illuminators, so that the installation doesn’t waste any power,’ he said.

Funding for the project is being sought via corporate sponsors and via a dedicated crowd-sourcing website at http://fieldoflight.co.uk/uluru.php. Visitors to the website can make an online donation. ‘We hope

Bruce’s many supporters around the world will donate a stem for £12 each,’ said a spokeswoman from Munro’s team. Corporate sponsors are being invited to sponsor clusters of 500 steams at £5,000 each. ‘Over time, we hope to raise enough to make this crazy, wonderful dream come true,’ she added.

Working with 30 local land-guardians, Munro and his team will take six weeks to install Field of Light in sight of the great Uluru. ‘I consider myself extraordinarily privileged to be invited to work here,’ said Munro.

Ray Stone of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia said: ‘The spirituality of this iconic location makes it unique and so appealing to people throughout the world. This, for me, is why Bruce’s work fits so naturally into our destination. The Field of Light has exactly that kind of spirituality - difficult to define but powerful in its impact.’

Lighting the lovliesThe 2012 Miss Universe Slovak Republic featured a streamlined, high-tech stage with multiple LED walls.

Martin Kubánka was again the lighting designer – his fourteenth in the role. The lighting equipment included a substantial Robe moving rig supplied by Q-99.Kubánka used Daniel Šichman’s set as the visual start point, complimenting it’s clear linear cuts and shapes with a futuristic lighting rig to match.

The set and high brightness LED elements also had an impact on how the show was lit. Bright light sources were needed to deal with the LEDs, and so ROBE ROBIN MMX Spots and 600 Beams were central to the rig.

Additionally, there were the specific requirements of any beauty pageant, including to light the girls in flattering skin tones and with no facial shadowing shadows for the cameras. As always in a colour temperature sensitive environment like this, the CRI of the fixtures was crucial.

The fixture count included ten ROBIN MMX Spots, 24 ROBIN Beam 600s, 20 ROBIN Beam 300s, 17 x ColorSpot 1200E AT and eight ColorWash 1200E ATs.

With a global mix of exhibitors, visitors to PLASA 2012 will really be in for a treat this year. Acknowledged as THE event for the entertainment technology sector, new

advances in technology for live concerts and tours, theatres, nightclubs and leisure

attractions will feature heavily this year. The organisers tell us that they expect upwards

of 15,000 lighting designers, theatre consultants, architects, DJ’s, sound engineers, installers, production designers, sound designers, stage managers, technicians, programmers and facilities managers to attend, and at the time of writing, more than 80 lighting exhibitors have been confirmed.

WHAT’S ON?The fifth annual Knight of Illumination Award, which celebrates the achievements of UK-based lighting designers, will follow the opening day. Internationally respected lighting designer, Richard Pilbrow has called the Awards: ‘The most valuable gift to the entire lighting profession’. Pilbrow is joint founder of the Association of British Theatre Technicians, Society of Theatre

Consultants, The Society of British Theatre Designers, and the Association of Lighting Designers.

He has won countless awards, including the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in Lighting Design from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Association of British Theatre Technicians Technician of the Year (2000), Lighting Designer of the Year by Lighting Dimensions Magazine (2005), The Wally Russell Foundation Wally Russell Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), and was honoured at last year’s Knight of Illumination Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The popular two-day Rigging Conference is going ahead on 10-11 September. In only its third year, the event is firmly established as an international platform to review best practice, dispel myths, discuss standards and share expertise. Forty international speakers take part in panel sessions, including in-depth case studies and lively open question sessions. Also returning in 2012 is the Riggers’ Forum on 9 September. This informal event offers riggers who are unable to attend the main conference a chance to discuss issues affecting their working life with experts in the industry.

As the largest international show for entertainment technology professionals,

PLASA is a must-attend event for anyone in the industry

The Theatres Trust will return with its innovative Ecovenue feature, the area that gives visitors the chance to see how 48 pioneering London theatres are putting sustainability into practice. Taking the form of a theatre-in-miniature, complete with auditorium, stage, backstage, foyer and box office, The Theatres Trust will demonstrate proven sustainability techniques, as well as featuring technologies from exhibitors. The People’s Choice Award for Sustainable Theatrical Products will be presented on the Trust’s stand at 5pm on 12 September. Entries will be displayed throughout the show, giving visitors plenty of chances to see and vote for their selection.

New for 2012, the Professional Development Programme has been created to encourage the exchange of ideas and significantly developing the show’s educational offering. The four-day programme features 80 sessions held in four purpose-built seminar theatres on the show floor. The first of nine categories is Future Trends, a series looking at the current direction of technology. Its headline session, Are we near to Perfect Sound? will be presented by Martin Audio’s Jason Baird and d&b audiotechnik’s Werner Bayer, plus a representative from Meyer Sound.

The Sustainability Programme explores how to reconcile the needs of an energy-hungry industry with responsible environmental practices. The Theatres Trust and Julies Bicycle show how putting sustainability into practice can pay dividends. Business Issues examines the most cost-effective and productive methods of communicating your company’s message. Attend a Social Networking master class specific to the entertainment technology industry and learn how to make it work for you.

Back to Basics focuses on the fundamentals of audio, lighting and audio-visual technology, providing something for newcomers to the industry and refresher sessions for seasoned campaigners.

Last, but by no means least, networking plays a big part in a visit to the show, and to make life not only easier, but more pleasurable for attendees, the PLASA Bar will remain open each evening for two hours after the show closes, giving plenty of time to catch up with existing contacts and get to know new ones, while enjoying an informal, relaxed atmosphere – and a well-earned drink of course.

presentation of a new bike for team Honda’s MotoGP racer, Lucio Cecchinello was a major event.

To celebrate it and the company’s 17 years’ racing history, the team at Honda wanted to retrace its history, and create a ‘white book’ describing through photography, the emotion and passion that drives the team to ever greater success.

The event to introduce the 2012 team took place at the Jerez de la Frontera racetrack in Spain. It was also the setting for internationally renowned photographer, Davide Esposito who was tasked with portraying the newest addition to the team, the World Champion of Moto2, Stefan Bradl, on his Honda RC213V.

Esposito wanted to enhance the colours and the clean lines of this new RC213V, so to present the bike’s new livery in its best light for his pictures, the Honda LCR team chose to focus on specialist lighting effects using Spotlight luminaires. The photographer explained that; ‘the lighting can create atmosphere, highlight shapes, outline shadows and enhance colours, so it is a key factor for photo shoots as well as for a media event, for a commercial installation or for a museum exhibition.’

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHTAt the glittering event organised to introduce this season’s Moto GP team and its latest bike, Honda took the opportunity to create a lasting portfolio of images, which required that both the team and the bike were lit to perfection. Gentlemen, start your engines...

THE Spotlight, which designs and manufactures professional lighting for the theatre and entertainment industries, has also extended this experience in the architectural field where the optical, electrical and lighting qualities are combined with the refinement of the design for a specific and highly performing product range. With the introduction of its Green Line family, Spotlight’s architectural range of LED fixtures is further characterised by optical high performance and a real contribution to energy saving, guaranteeing a total absence of infrared and ultraviolet rays to the benefit of both the people and the objects being illuminated.

A spokesman for the company explained: ‘A strong focus on green environmental policies is common to both Spotlight and Honda LCR, which, with its Ecostyle project, aims to reduce and offset its emissions: in fact in the gallery that was created for the official presentation of the bike, some very evocative shots highlight the companies’ mutual sensitivity for the environment.’
