in pink TIME ON YOUR HANDS?As the festive season fi nally arrives, the desk is cleared for the last time in 2011 and you retire to the bosom of your families for a surfeit of turkey, crackers and Christmas pud, the chances are you’ll reach a point where you need something to do, or just to escape to another room to be rid of the Mother in law – and I’ve got just the solution in a little light …

ODA has published (under cover of darkness, one assumes) a document entitled: Olympic Delivery Authority Equality Impact Assessment Lighting Strategy.

I came upon this particular gem while valiantly trying to research information about the lighting element of the build programme for the Olympic venues. You know the sort of thing - what percentage of the fi ttings will be energy effi cient; the overall cost of lighting the Olympic park; whether lighting controls have been put in place - nothing too diffi cult to get answers to - or so you’d think…

Following my journalistic nose, I contacted ODA in an effort to clarify exactly what requirement there was for a document running to 41 pages on the impact of the Games’ lighting strategy on visitors, in terms of gender, race and God forbid, sexual orientation. Call me dim, but what do any of those things have to do with lighting the stadiums?

Not being one to be put off by offi cial red tape, I contacted the ODA press offi ce. ‘I’ve never heard of that,’ said the nice helpful guy I spoke to. ‘Could you send me the link?’ I did, and the answer that came back was that this ridiculously long, wordy document that strives to cover every possible minority visitor variant - from women aged 50-plus (who knew your mum was a minority?) to gypsies and travellers - was actually created in order to assure the lighting levels within the various stadia were suitable for visually-impaired visitors. I wonder why they didn’t just cover that?

I think it’s time to pull the shutters down on 2011, and hope that we can shed a little more light on the subject of the Olympics in 2012.

Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.

FLOODLIGHT

STUNNING SON-ET-LUMIÈRE AT DURHAMThe hit of the 2009 Durham Festival, Crown of Light - a stunning son-et-lumière that used the extraordinary architecture of Durham Cathedral as its canvas - returned to the city once again this winter.

Created by renowned projection artist, Ross Ashton, with a soundtrack by Robert Ziegler and John Del’Nero, Crown of Light draws its visual material from inside the cathedral and from the Lindisfarne Gospels, giving residents and visitors a glimpse of the book’s contents before it returns to Durham in 2013. It is the fi rst time it has been in the city since the 17th Century.

Images from the Gospels are spread across the entire façade of the cathedral each day from dusk. Transforming any building - but particularly one as dramatic as Durham Cathedral - with light and projection requires equally dramatic lighting equipment. Here, as so often in his work, Ashton turned to the PIGI large-format projectors, which offer a resolution, precision and dynamic range as yet unmatched by video projection while still

allowing the creation of movement and other dramatic transformation effects. They were supplied by entertainment lighting specialist, White Light, continuing a collaboration with Ashton that has encompassed projects from Edinburgh to New York.

‘White Light is a valued partner on my projects,’ Ashton notes. ‘They are helpful and accommodating, and work hard to make sure that everything goes well prior to delivery and during the operation of the kit.’

‘Ross’ projects are always something to behold,’ comments White Light’s hire director, Dave Isherwood, ‘and we are always delighted to be part of them. As ever, we hope that our work in preparing the PIGIs will go unseen so that visitors to Durham can just marvel at the dramatic images magically spread across the width of the cathedral.’

BUILT TO LAST

LEDPowerPlant gives a stabilised DC voltage for 24V or 12V LED sources, which run at their best at nominal voltage. The driver maintains optimum stabilised DC voltage at the LEDs irrespective of mains voltage fl uctuations. LEDPowerPlant’s electronic sensing circuitry allows it to be positioned great distances from the light sources, solving problems associated with positioning and concealing power supplies.

A standard 0-10V signal provides exceptionally smooth dimming, while an internal relay completely switches off the power to LEDs when the signal is taken below 1V. This, together with remote positioning, greatly simplifi es wiring, especially when dimming and increases safety using only low voltage cable to the light source.

Brian Cuthbertson, managing director of Multiload Technology, said: ‘We’re a company with a passion for making sophisticated analogue lighting drives easy to install and use. We have built a solid reputation on our VoltMaster intelligent transformer, and we expect our new drive to be equally successful.

‘By using cable runs typically up to 100m, LEDPowerPlant allows for enhanced design options, with clean and uncluttered installations

and no need to hide power supplies near LEDs.

Furthermore, its stabilised voltages offer accuracy better than 99 per cent, while delivering smooth dimming and switching from an industry

standard 0-10V signal.’

WINNING INSTALLATIONFlos has announced that the stunning Wall Rupture fi tting designed by Thierry Dreyfus has been awarded Best Lighting Product at the FX Interior Design Awards, which celebrates interior luminaires, lamps and exterior lighting products for use in the workplace, retail, leisure, exhibition,

public or commercial settings.Wall Rupture appears as a fi ssure within a wall’s surface, releasing a beam of jagged, radiant light produced by concealed LED light sources. Evocative of a volcanic eruption or earthquake, Dreyfus has drawn on the world of contemporary art to create a striking sculptural light installation.

Wall Rupture has two fi nishes: gold and silver, and, like all the Soft Architecture range, it uses LED powered lighting units.Wall Rupture was fi rst presented in Milan at Euroluce 2011 and later installed at UK distributor Atrium’s London showroom to coincide with the London Design Festival 2011 in September.

QUALITY CONTROL FOR LEDS Analytik, the supplier of analytical instrumentation to the UK and Ireland, has linked up with German company, GL Optic for the supply of spectroradiometers for use in both quality control and research applications to the growing lighting market. GL Optic’s Mini-Spectrometer is a practical handheld device specifically designed for the measurement and characterisation of light sources - particularly LEDs - providing accurate spectral information and colour coordinates conforming to CIE standards. Dedicated software automatically calculates critical parameters, such as colour temperature and colour rendering index, whilst different accessories are available for specialised measurements; including

luminous flux of LEDs using the 48mm integrating sphere, and luminance of flat screen LCD displays with the display sensor optical probe. The Mini-Spectrometer is just that, small and with low energy consumption but still managing to deliver high sensitivity and precise calibration performance based on a particularly low noise floor. Powered and operational when connected to a PC via a USB port, it is ready to start measuring within ten minutes of switching on. GL Optic believes it has designed a product to face the challenges of the modern lighting industry and demanding LED market. This handheld spectrometer can be used for everyday incoming quality control of light

sources, field work of quality engineers and other professionals who deal in the quality of light. Talking about the addition of GL Optics’ products to Analytik’s range of innovative scientific solutions for industry and research, founder and managing director, Ian Laidlaw, says: ‘The UK lighting technology market is growing rapidly and we see an excellent fit for the products from GL Optic. It will broaden our market reach based on eight years’ experience working in spectroscopy and allied measurement techniques.’

ANOLIS IN LIGHTING FIRST Protea Court is the newly opened extension to South Africa’s most desirable and glamorous retail destination – Sandton City in Johannesburg.

It features a ground-breaking architectural lighting installation designed by Paul Pamboukian and senior lighting designer, Joao Viegas of Paul Pamboukian Lighting Design (PPLD), with 115xAnolis ArcPad48 and 12xArcSource96 fixtures used to highlight the spectacular 34m high, 42m diameter, sloping roof and its ETFE inflatable skin.

The fittings were supplied by Anolis’ South African distributor, DWR, which also undertook the installation and commissioning of the lighting system. DWR’s team of three installation technicians all completed full Rope Access and Working at Height safety courses before starting on site, with approximately 70% of the Anolis fixtures needing to be rigged externally on the1 degree-pitched roof structure.

Protea Court – which houses 70 new international and luxury retail outlets - was inspired by the shape of South Africa’s national flower, the Protea and designed by Tia Kanakakis from MDS Architects.

PPLD has worked with MDS Architects on previous projects, and was asked to create a fabulous and innovative lighting scheme to accentuate the striking shape and aura of Protea Court, in the process capturing the mood and spirit of the whole cutting edge development and retail experience with lighting.

LIGHTING FOR MUSIC - LIVE AND ON TVThe Leader Light Stage 6-06 LED fixture, which features a traditional look of six round lenses mounted in a 600mm linear batten, but with each lens powered by a 10W white LED source recently made dramatic appearances lighting Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on the BBC TV series, The Jonathan Ross Show, and on Bowling for Soup’s UK tour

Russ Grubiak, lighting programmer for The Jonathan Ross Show said he was: ‘Very excited about the use of a very unique product.’ He, and show lighting director, Oli Richards considered various ways of using the 6-06 before deciding on their approach: ‘We figured that a lot of people would use them in straight lines or as a grid. Oli’s preference was for a non-uniform, random focus that filled the ceiling space and looked as edgy as possible.’ He explained: ‘ We mounted the fixtures in a ball and

socket TV grip, which suited our monopole hanging grid at the studio and gave us staggered heights.’

Grubiak then ran the fixtures from his Chamsys MQ100 Pro console, taking separate control of each cell in the fixture and ‘using individual channels with shuffle type grouping to achieve the spitting and random effects that the show seemed to demand. Noel’s performance was obviously amazing and gave us a great song to enhance,’ he agreed.

In live concert touring, Patrick Sollit is using the 6-06 with American punk-rock band Bowling for Soup as they tour the UK. ‘We are using the fixtures as ACL replacements,’ Sollit explains, ‘but the effects they are capable of are so much more than ACL bars, putting many dynamic and unique effects at my fingertips.

‘As a result, the lights have been getting a lot of attention from technicians at each venue we’ve visited. More importantly, they’ve looked great, and the band has been very happy with the look of the rig, and with the audience reaction from the crowds!’

The fixtures were supplied to the tour by Zigzag Lighting, one of a number of companies that have already invested in Leader Light products.

LIGHTING THE PYRAMID Toshiba has completed the fi rst stage of renewing the external lighting at the Louvre, the world’s most popular art museum in Paris. The iconic pyramid entrance, the three pyramidions and the Colbert pavilion will be suffused with the warm glow of a new LED lighting installation.

As the Louvre’s conventional exterior lighting was reaching the end of its life, the museum recognized the value of replacing the old, high energy xenon fi ttings with energy-effi cient, environmentally friendly LEDs. Toshiba designed the replacement lighting scheme to bring out the intrinsic beauty of the

museum buildings, using a range of its fi ttings, including high beam-lamps to illuminate the Pyramid and the palace walls.

Work on replacing the museum’s old lighting will continue into the New Year, with the remaining facades of the Napoleon Court due to be completed in the fi rst half of 2012, and the courtyard following in 2013. Toshiba will provide a total of 3,200 LED fi ttings to replace the 4,500 xenon fi ttings currently being used. The company says it will cut annual power consumption for the exterior lighting by 73%, from 392,000 watts to 105,000 watts.

The French national museum since 1793, the Louvre houses one of Europe’s oldest and

most famed art galleries. It is also one of the world’s largest and the most visited museums, opening its doors to 8.5 million visitors each year. The museum is part of ‘Paris, Banks of the Seine’, which was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Having spent more than ten years working in the independent sector as a lighting designer in architecture and popup, creative director of Philips UK, Rowena Preiss’ experience is vast. Taking the lead on high profile projects such as the O2, National Theatre and Westfield Stratford, Preiss shares what it takes to become the creative director of one of Britain’s leading lighting companies

TEXT: EMMA MORGAN

PERFECT DAYHow long have you worked in the lighting industry?I graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1998 and started my career with Levitt Shannen, designing light fittings for retailers, such as the Conran Store. As my major was in lighting it seemed a natural progression.

What were your first steps into the industry?I was reading about some of the work by DHA design services in a lighting magazine and was intrigued by their approach. I arranged to meet them, explaining that I was keen to understand a little more about lighting design. After two hours with Adam Grater, I have to say I was blown away by the notion of the ultimate spacial dynamic being so influenced by this mix of creative and technical thinking. He ended up offering me a job and that was it really. Under the wing of Jonathon Howard, I learned to appreciate this discipline and all of its complex facets, and will always be indebted to the team there.

How did you arrive at Philips Lighting?Following my experience at four of the UKs leading lighting design consultancies, I decided to explore the manufacturers role in the fruition of challenging lighting solutions, more as a desire to discover, and to work alongside some of the original unsung heroes of lighting, such as John Hugil, Pat Holley and co; key influencers of many technical initiatives in the early day of lighting innovation. Through my involvement with CIBSE and three years of delivering masterclasses in the UK, I was approached by Mike Simpson, technical director of Philips here.

It’s a really exciting time in lighting, pretty much anything is possible

FOCUS ON PEOPLE

What does your role entail?A great deal of variety and collaboration. I work across a host of different environments, but in essence it’s about bringing a creative vision to life through design, focusing on innovation-led design as an enabler of bridging technology with the creation of meaningful, life-enhancing solutions.

What does it take to achieve the position of creative director at a huge company, like Philips? Flexibility, passion and the ability to spot an opportunity. Plus a real desire to keep pushing the boundaries of the norm, using emerging technologies, as well as having a drive to inspire change in how we experience spaces.

What is a typical day at the office for you?I don’t have any typical days, especially not in my office, which keeps me on my toes! It’s important to me to experience and adsorb what’s going on around me, looking at emerging trends, and the fit with technology. We maintain that the timely introduction of technology is key, so knowing the right moment or opportunity to reveal something new is really important. Ultimately, lighting impacts on everyone so the outcome

needs to be beneficial to everybody. It’s a really exciting time in lighting - pretty much anything is possible.

What is your favourite part of the job? There are some incredible young designers out there that are on fire with ideas, often my challenge is realising their vision. The most rewarding part of my job is when that vision comes together with the latest technology, and sometimes something from the research campus. Seeing the result in reality and how it impacts on everything is amazing. Best of all is when we achieve something here in the UK, which is a global first. I think the designers in the UK are really leading in the field of lighting, and that makes me feel really proud.

What keeps you inspired?London mainly and its cultural diversity, as well as new technology emerging from Philips research, my colleagues and my boss!

How do you push the boundaries? Philips is a big company with a continuous stream of product development across all sectors, from Philips medical to Philips automotive lighting. We are surrounded by innovation here, and that really inspires

advances in lighting solutions, such as jet lag recovery systems, lighting integrated with media devices and wearable lighting. In my view, it’s so important to reveal new technology as soon as possible, showing what’s possible, even if it’s only to inspire new ideas.

How do you feel when you finally complete a project?Exhausted normally, followed by a big sense of achievement, and gratitude for the team involved. It’s really hard work but with a solid team in place, I can’t think of any hurdle we can’t overcome.

What are you currently working on? Numerous scenario solutions for 2016-17. It’s important to have a grasp on where we will be in the future and prepare solutions for expected changes in architectural design, while also keeping a watchful eye on new regulations emerging.

How do you begin to tackle a new project?Although my work is extremely diverse, it normally involves problem solving in some form; of course the starting point for this is always defining the problem in the first place. Sometimes that’s harder than actually solving the problem, especially at Philips where I’m surrounded by experts in lots of different fields. In lighting alone there are 70,000 of us - and I can say that an unsolvable problem hasn’t cropped up yet!

Your experience ranges from product design - of fittings for retail - to spatial and experience design. How did you develop such a broad range of skills? My dad’s an engineer and my mum, an artist, so I think it’s in my blood, although CMS played a big part in my life and really changed the way I think.

What emerging technologies are currently hitting the market? Digital media devices are becoming more and more cost effective, and smart light fittings are all tools that are having an impact. Spaces are expected to be multi-use and

way finding is no longer viewed as fixed. The o/ off switch - gosh I can’t remember the last time I saw one! The challenge is more about what you do with the space once all the technology is in place, and importantly how you communicate those choices to the user.

In your lifetime what do you regard as having been the key milestones in lighting? That’s got to be LEDs. Ten years ago I remember the first blue ones; we went crazy for them then, all these blue dots started appearing in London at night, it was a new type of blue and you knew instantly what it was. Thankfully things have moved on since then. I dread to think what the skyline would look like now if they hadn’t!

In your opinion, what is currently the best lighting source available?I still get excited when I see a colour reach, it’s got to be the big boy of lighting, and I am still amazed at what it can do.

What lighting product could you not live without?Apart from my Philips alarm clock? I really couldn’t live without any of them.

What is currently the biggest innovation in the industry? Lighting accounts for 19 per cent of global electricity consumption, and with the rise in energy costs and an increased awareness of climate change, there is growing interest in energy efficient sources. The cost saving and environmental benefits of LEDs continues to make it an attractive proposition. Although there has been a recent surge in the number of manufacturers entering the field without the necessary expertise to develop and produce high quality LED luminaries that will actually

last. The industry is doing a great deal to ensure buyers get the information they need to enable them to weigh up the pros and cons and accurately compare the performance of different LED products using clearly defined parameters. This should help to root out those companies making performance claims they cannot actually substantiate.

You deliver several papers a year across the country. What does your latest cover? Westfield Stratford, showing some of the challenges we faced, logistically and technically, a series of solutions and concepts, how they came about and the design consultancies involved.

You have also tutored at CSM, what does this entail?I’ve tutored on several courses and often get involved in projects that involve lighting in some way. I have been involved with CSM in some way every year since leaving. It’s a really inspiring place to be, although this is all in my spare time. I think I get far more out of it than I ever put in. The innovation lab is doing great things and MA Design for narrative environments is always breaking new ground.

What areas do you think need further development?I think there is scope to explore the electromagnetic spectrum in more detail now that technology has moved on. The fundamentals of light - where it comes from and how we see it, all need revisiting in my view. What we can see and what is actually there are two very different things right now.

What is the future of the lighting industry? If I tell you that I will have to shoot you!

Finally, what does lighting mean to you?Everything. It’s always evolving and changing and there’s no way you could ever get bored working in this industry.

The Philips Fortimo LED spotlight module (SLM) range generation 2 features upgrades for the entire product portfolio:• Quality of light improvement with increased CRI of up to 95 Ra

• Ease of design-in improvement via the use of a new optical dome and a higher operating temperature• Performance upgrade of up to 30% lm/W for 3000 K• Product portfolio expansion with 2700 K

Performance upgradesThis 2nd generation stands for a greatly increased effi cacy, and depending on the lumen output this increase can be morethan 30%. In addition, the Standard Deviation for Color Matching (SDCM) has been reduced from four to just three initially, for even greater color consistency.

Portfolio expansionsThe Philips Fortimo LED SLM gen 2 system expansions includes a CRI 90 delivering improved quality of light, an additional color temperature of 2700 K allowing the module to be applied in more retail application areas. And the greater lumen output op-tion of 5000 lm will ensure that the gen 2 becomes a signifi cant complementary product in line with CDM 70W performance.

Fortimo LED SLM Gen 2 upgrade and expansions

New optical dome for smoother beamA special developed silicone dome is applied to the improved spotlight module which helps to improve the homogeneity of the beam. Covering the LEDs ensures that the light is more comprehensively mixed – creating a totally homogenous beam pattern without rings. The silicone is also extremely transparent, therefore less than 3% of light output is lost. The new silicone dome also enables the use of specular refl ectors.

40% reduction in cooling costsThe TC for Fortimo has been increased to 75 °C. This means that the luminaire manufacturer can use smaller heat sinks and therefore miniaturize his luminaire. More luminaire designs (those with up to 3000 lm outputs) can now use passive cooling strategies. The bottomline effect of this increased TC is thatcooling solutions now cost up to 40% less.

The ideal alternative – today and tomorrowIntroducing these second generation enhancements are clearly defi ning the Fortimo LED SLM range as the ideal solution for retail environments for today and tomorrow.

The central promise of the Philips Fortimo LED product range is constant innovation within a fi xed format and includes a standardized optical interface and standardized lumen packages. As long as this defi ned format is used, luminaire manufacturers can easily implement the latest advances in LED effi cacy, without having to change the driver, the dimensions of the LED module or the lumen output. It also means that Philips can provide constant innovation.

he debate about the contribution that exterior lighting can play in illuminating our most famous monuments and buildings has been reignited recently with calls for Stonehenge

to be lit for the benefit of passers-by. During the 1970s and early 1980s

Stonehenge was illuminated, but since then the prehistoric stones have remained in darkness after sunset, unseen by those driving along the busy A303, some 200m away.

The debate was sparked when Lady Mimi Pakenham of Warminster, wrote a letter to The Times suggesting that lights would give the World Heritage Site ‘dignity.’

She said: ‘The magic of Stonehenge could be shared every evening with all who pass, many of whom can’t afford a ticket, just as it was a magical place thousands of years ago, sometimes with the moon and clouds shining as well.

‘With subtle lighting sunk well out of view and endless possibilities of solar energy, the monumental power of ancient man’s achievement in another age would inspire all who pass by.’

The debate escalated when the Telegraph reported on the issue, as did the BBC and Guardian. Speaking on Radio 4’s Today Programme, Clive Ruggles, Professor of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester, pointed out that the stone circle is ‘iconic of the connection between prehistoric monuments and the sky.’ Ruggles, the world’s first professor of archaeoastronomy, studies the relationships between the sky and ancient monuments / communities. He argues that part of the experience of a monument like Stonehenge is seeing it in the dark, as it would have been viewed thousands of years ago by

the people who built it. The BBC website attracted 367 comments,

including a strong consensus against lighting, but many criticisms were overbearing. One of the main objections people have is why light our monuments and buildings at all, especially when organisations are seeking to reduce costs and environmental impact.

We must never forget that light can be developed and used to achieve far more than providing just the ability to see. Tactile qualities can be emphasised, mood and magic created and structure, surface and space highlighted. Such is the ability of our lighting design community that I see no reason why the stones could not be shown sympathetically in their setting.

It was only a decade ago when we were lighting over 400 churches through the Church Floodlighting Trust. Churchcare says that exterior lighting makes a church a ‘living building’ and can ‘show off…towers and spires, built to the glory of God, to their best advantage, dramatically against the night sky’.

Much is happening with regard to lighting equipment. LED luminaires are now a world away - in terms of size, optical and operating efficiency and controllability - from the UK’s existing exterior lighting stock. You only have to look at the recent ILP competition to light Durham Cathedral and Castle to see that

Hugh King, known to many from his tenure with Thorn Lighting, discusses the potential for lighting our historic monuments – or not, depending on your viewpoint

LEDs can increase visual attractiveness while making carbon and financial savings – in the region of 50 per cent per annum.

Furthermore, there is no reason why the lighting should operate continuously. For St Patrick’s Day last year, Tourism Ireland arranged for major landmarks and iconic sites around the globe – from the Nelson Monument in Edinburgh to Table Mountain in South Africa - to ‘go green’ in a bid to boost tourism.

Another objection is that the builders of Stonehenge never employed artificial lighting. Now I’m not an archaeologist, so I can only comment from a layman’s point of view. But whilst it is tempting to think of our ancestor’s lighting abilities as non-existent, I’m reminded of the caves in Altemira, Spain where over 15,000 years ago paintings of bison bulls were found. It was first thought that light from a fire was used, but primitive stone lamps which burnt animal fats and oil were found.

I might add that I’m not entirely convinced that the site is completely dark. My experience of the A303, albeit during the holiday season, is of evening traffic jams with headlights blazing. I’ll leave the last word to Lady Pakenham, who ended her second letter to The Times with: ‘Isn’t it time the scientific community climbs down from its astronomical ivory tower and shares a little more of the jewels of the nation with the rest of the country?’

DESIGN FOCUS

arinas, harbours and docks are arguably some of the most hostile environments any lighting specialist would have to operate in, dealing with salt water, extremes of climate and variations in water temperature.

However, the industry is vibrant proof that necessity is the mother of invention. Creative use of metals, protective coatings and technology have all ensured that underwater and marine lighting weather the vagaries of the environment. According to marketing director of OceanLED, Lee Savage, the fi rst ever underwater lights were positioned underneath a boat during the fi lming of the movie, Jaws to provide lighting for the cameras. ‘Then, in the early- to mid-1990s, super yachts started getting them - an area that exploded in 2004-05 - and now we are starting to see manufacturers putting underwater lights on lots of boats as standard,’ he explained.

The other developing standard is increasing use of LEDs, which are more effi cient and allow colour change, dimming and strobe options. The only downside is price: where a halogen lamp would cost £6-£7, an LED of equivalent power will set you back approximately £25. However, ‘We tend to push LED for lighting on boats,’ says partner at Timage, Marcus Lanza. ‘It is expensive, but boats have no way of producing power other than a generator, and halogen lights are one of the highest consumers of power.’

You also get what you pay for, and the return on investment is measurable: ‘For light source, power intensity and distribution, you need to make sure you use the highest quality fi t for those environments,’ says principal and owner of Light Bureau, Paul Traynor. ‘The lowest spec always comes back to bite you!’

In addition, replacing underwater lamps brings manifold problems. ‘The moment you open a light, it gets moist from the environment; then you seal it and if the interior is still humid, it accelerates corrosion,’ says Savage. ‘We have overcome that by factory -sealing

everything - you cannot get back into the lights unless you break them apart. But that brings its own problems with internal pressures: the air expands when it is hot and then, when it is underwater, it cools quickly and that wears out the seals. A clever way of combating that is with a seal that stretches, instead of being rock solid - it breathes.’

OceanLED uses aluminium bronze housing on some underwater lights rather than stainless steel because stainless steel oxidises out of water, which protects it against corrosion, but underwater this does not happen. Its lights are also protected against infestations of barnacles and other sea life by a tritonium coating, which can be wiped clean.

Hella Marine has also gone down the LED route and its latest product is EuroLED 115, a downlight in dimmable and non-dimmable versions. ‘These fittings offer class-leading

efficiency, with less than 5W consumption, but giving light that is comparable to 20W halogen lamps,’ says SOE business development manager, Nigel Hemming. ‘They are suitable for interior or exterior use, and are sealed to IP67 with a sealed cable entry.’ This is pertinent because the cable is exposed to moisture at the connection end, water can wick its way up the cable to the fitting.

BGB Marine’s underwater/out-of-water Amphibian fitting is its most recent

innovation. ‘We designed the product specifically for swimming pools, fountains, marinas, etc. and it uses the most advanced technology,’ says product development engineer for BGB Innovation, Chris Richards.

‘Typically, we offer lights in an aluminium housing for fresh water application, but we have quoted on projects in the past, where we had corrosion issues, so we developed something using stainless steel for corrosion resistance,’ he says.

And when the company started receiving enquiries from the Middle East, it was dealing with another set of challenges: sea temperatures of around 20oC and a high salt content. ‘For any type of salt environment, especially warm water, we use stainless steel,’ says Richards. BGB Innovation has a test chamber, which allows it to recreate (to within five per cent accuracy) the ocean in which the company is working, allowing it to submerge a range of materials to gauge the best performer. ‘As you would expect, stainless steel 316 was the best performing product and made it easy to decide what to manufacture our Amphibian body from, for demanding applications such as the Middle East,’ says Richards.

Managing director of waterfront property and marina development specialist Arrol Limited, Simon Arrol has also worked in the region and created designs for Anchor

Marina on Palm Island, Dubai. ‘I had to do everything bigger and better and came up with underwater lights under the pontoon,’ he says. ‘We carried out tests of LED lights under the main walkways with different colours and intensity. We also looked at how to clean them as plant growth is enormously fast in the Middle East.’

As in everything, technology plays a major role in marine and underwater lighting: ‘One particularly clever trick is to link lights on port-hand and starboard-hand buoys in a navigation channel coming into a port to GPS satellites so that they all flash at the same time because they are getting timing data from the GPS.’

Lighting Bureau’s Paul Traynor created something specifically to mitigate problems arising from the hot climate in the Middle East. He was dealing with daytime temperatures of mid to high 40s, rising

to well beyond 100 degrees C inside lights. ‘We did a façade scheme on the Corniche and we had to engineer the LED light source so that it was in touch with a metallic surface in an air-conditioned bedroom to allow the LED to operate behind glass on the façade.’

As with any growing industry, there are low quality pretenders to the market, particularly from China, and this intrusion is aided by a lack of cohesion and regulatory standards in the market, according to Savage.

However, as sales start to cover the cost of R&D, prices of LEDs will start to drop, creating tremendous opportunities for operators, ensuring continued invention and innovation in an already dynamic sector.

BRIGHT SPARKSith their promise of greater energy efficiency and value for money, low maintenance costs and even headache-busting

properties, LEDs are revolutionising the way in which offices are lit. From high-spec high street banks to call centres, the LED is on the march but the fluorescent tube isn’t going down without a fight.

In the 1990s, the T5 was launched as an energy efficient replacement to the ubiquitous T8. ‘It was’, says Tom Harrison, managing director of LED specialist MHA Lighting, ‘a very clever move by the traditional lamp manufacturers.

‘It (the T5) is not as efficient as the LED but it’s not as expensive either,’ he explains. ‘What it has done is create a dilemma for people who are conscious of energy

will be compelling and, as costs reduce with the improvements in the technology paybacks, there will be a significant reduction in ROI time scales.’

It was the benefits of LED that shone through for lighting specialist, WILA, which has recently completed a major installation at the Nomura Investment Bank in London.

The brief, explains WILA’s technical director, Peter Le Manquais, was to provide a bright, uniform light that could also be dimmed for the bank’s 8,000sq m trading floor. To achieve this, the

Mark Hillsdon goes in search of predictions for office lighting of the future ...

Wefficiency but perhaps not completely trusting of LED yet, because it’s still a young and immature market. It gives them a safe, halfway house.’

Glenn Preston, key account general manager at building services company, GSH Group, agrees: ‘At present, LED as a standalone solution does not solve all lighting requirements, but in conjunction with other efficient light sources, will provide an effective lighting solution for most applications.

‘The lifetime of LED, along with the reduction in maintenance and energy usage,

LED will undoubtedly be the driver for future developments, but this will be in conjunction with intelligent control systems

company developed a bespoke fitting, the LINIC 400, which has since become part of its Ingenic range.

As well as meeting the technical challenge, WILA has also estimated that at Nomura, the LEDs will last for at least 15 years - during the same period, however, fluorescent lamps would have to be replaced six times, at a

cost of over £180,000.‘For an intensely-operated

trading floor and a busy office, any disruption to work caused during a re-lamping process is not quantifiable but does have a negative impact. Using LEDs, which will last longer than fluorescent, was an ideal solution,’ he adds.

MHA has also worked with a number of banks, where offices are often almost dark, apart from LED uplighters, to help prevent glare on computer screens. ‘The light is sent upwards and then reflected down and that’s because people working in these environments might have five or six laptops on the go at any one time. They want a completely different atmosphere to a general office,’ says Harrison.

The versatility of LED is shown by another MHA installation, this time designed to deal with problems in a much larger call centre

environment. ‘There were no windows in this particular office,’ explains Harrison. ‘and migraines were a big complaint with people sitting under hot fluorescents for long periods of time.’

Lighting across the call centre had become haphazard, he recalls, with lights turned

off in some sections of the office, while other people had resorted

to desk lamps.MHA installed dimmable

30 watt Tilite fittings and now, says Harrison: ‘No-one’s complaining of headaches, there’s no

flicker, no humming noise and no heat coming down onto

peoples’ heads.’The fact that LEDs are now dimmable

is a major advantage, says Le Manquais. ‘As far as the human eye can detect, LEDs when dimmed do not change colour, which means that an even white tone is maintained as light levels are changed.’

Other key benefits of LEDs are the fact they produce no UV radiation, which means less heat and less expensive air conditioning - and unlike both the T5 and T8, they don’t contain liquid mercury.

‘Sensors work better with LED than they do with traditional lamps,’ says

No-one’s complaining of headaches, there’s no flicker, no humming noise and no heat coming down onto peoples’ heads.

Harrison, ‘because while traditional lights often take time to warm up, LEDs are instantaneous.’

Harrison is seeing a growing popularity in ambient daylight sensors too, which dim the lights that are closest to windows if enough natural light is coming in. Other sensors will dim lights at a given time but then come on again when they detect movement, and so meet Health & Safety requirements.

Many offices are also installing lighting control systems, as FM’s become fully aware of the negative financial and PR connotations of leaving lights blazing all night in empty offices.

Of course all LEDs will slow down and eventually fail completely, which often means replacing the whole fitting. Toshiba’s new E-core 2000 is one way of getting round this problem. Billed as a second generation uplighter, it’s designed to be upgradable so that the LED module can simply be removed without the need to replace the whole fitting.

As the technology continues to develop, and costs come down, many believe 2012 could be the year that the LED finally pulls ahead of the fluorescent tube. ‘LEDs are changing so quickly that in 12 months, an LED chip will be either half the price or twice as efficient,’ says Edward Lees,

product manager, Toshiba Lighting Systems, who believes that standardisation will also play a crucial role in the uptake of LED. ‘A consortium of over 40 global manufacturers is currently looking into new specifications for light fittings’, he says.

‘LED will undoubtedly be the driver for major future developments but this will be in conjunction with intelligent control systems which will maintain light output utilising LED as a dimmable solution along with occupancy and building controls,’ adds Preston.

‘New versions of LED, such as organic LED, known as OLED, will also start to penetrate the market, which will provide an infinite number of lighting solutions once the technology is proven to deliver the light levels and longevity required.’

‘The industry is at a tipping point where LEDs will start being recognised as a more energy efficient option than T5 next year,’ predicts Le Manquais.

‘For now, the initial investment into LED luminaries can be high, but it is just a matter of time – dependent on the market – before they become less expensive and therefore a truly viable alternative for all budgets.’

here are many initial challenges facing the lighting designer and architect when they first step over the church threshold, not to mention diocesan committee approval

that awaits. Graham W Smith, partner and senior engineer at CES Lighting and Electrical Engineers based in Coulsdon, Surrey, which has delivered 600 church projects since 1992, says that you can change the mood of the church building with the lighting. ‘When you walk into a church to meet the client for the first time, there’s the architecture, charm and character of the building to take into consideration as well as the certain committees for approval. Every time we complete a project we feel like we have achieved a huge team exercise,’ he says.

Lighting designers have a divine task when it comes to refitting churches and cathedrals on sacred foundations. Installations must blend with sacrosanct architecture and each design should create a mood appropriate for sermons, communions and baptisms. St Mary’s Church, Shalford: Versatile VictorianCES Lighting and Electrical Engineers had to gain approval from the Guildford Diocesan Advisory Committee to design and install its bespoke fittings at Victorian St Mary’s Church in Shalford. The project, completed in May 2011, was part of a wider church re-structuring project, to allow services to be conducted from a central nave as well as the main eastern sanctuary.

Smith explains that the new positioning had a key influence on where the luminaires were plotted: ‘Our task was to make sure that light levels are always balanced from the wall to the middle of the worship area in this high, wide church,’ he said.

CES rose to the challenge by building a corona incorporating AR111 spotlights in the nave and by installing compact lighting

around the church. Smith says: ‘For the lighting source we used Osman lamps in bespoke luminaires with AR111 energy efficient halogen lamps. PL, low compact lighting was used for the general lighting in the whole area, from the nave to the aisles and chancel.’

Eco-efficient AR111 spotlights were also positioned for directional lighting with controlled beams at important service areas of the church, like the altar and dais, to give a theatrical effect. ‘We increased lighting levels to draw the eye to specific areas. An auto dimming pre-set system now controls the light for each type of church service. Rather than a bank of switches, we zoned the lighting by service schedule and assigned a numbered button for each service. This conserves energy as well as creating the right mood and atmosphere,’ he adds.

St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh: LED innovationWiltshire-based lighting designer, Bruce Munro was ordained with the task of lighting the steel and glass internal porch designed by Icelandic artist, Leifur Breidfjord at St Giles in 2009. Munro has more recently created the high profile water tower and LED light shower temporary installations at Salisbury Cathedral in 2011.

Bruce Munro’s long-serving designer, Anna Craddock was in charge of delivering an energy conscious and low maintenance solution for the project – a lighting system packaged in four one-metre squared LED light boxes, cantilevered above the porch. Each box was topped by frosted translucent acrylic in a lightweight aluminium frame, with the same metalwork finish as the porch.

The light boxes were installed with 24 mini warm-white LED down-lights, which shine through the bottom of each box into the glass roof of the porch. The energy efficient LEDs are 1.2 watt and each box is controlled by remotely positioned drivers.

Craddock was able to design the lighting system without visiting the 13th Century cathedral, with the help of architect Philip Flockhart at Morris and Steedman Associates. ‘We had the architect’s drawings and the elevations of the space. We wanted to make something that would glow, to really show off the beautiful metalwork, with the drivers in outside boxes to make maintenance a piece of cake,’ she says.

St Peter’s Church, Plymouth: Contemporary interpretationWhen it comes to contemporary luminaire design, Church of England St Peter’s Church

in Plymouth’s Crown of Thorns chandelier is light years ahead. Chelsom lighting and design manufacturers crafted the lighting for this dramatic chandelier, the centrepiece of an overall refurbishment project by Harris McMillan architects.

A spokesperson from Chelsom explains the interpretive design concept: ‘A stainless steel halo is supported by a central core, which is suspended on rods and strainer wires to restrict movement. Featuring up- and down-lights around the perimeter, the fitting is totally energy efficient and forms a powerful focal point to the church.’

The lighting design was part of an evolving church refurbishment to renovate a tired church with old electrical and heating systems. Barry Ennis, associate director at

Harris McMillan explains the concept: ‘The design for the refurbishment of the church will bring a new unity and sense of space with changes to floor levels, finishes and fittings. Coronas and cantilevered wall lights are significant features but with elegant simplicity. They fit into the space adding a modern touch without the sensitivity of the whole space becoming overpowered.’

St Giles, Ashtead, Surrey: Medieval magicAs well as being sympathetic to the 12th Century, grade I listed building, CES had a complex T-shaped nave and aisle area to contend with when lighting small and quirky St Giles’ Church.

‘We needed something traditional, so replicated and manufactured the original lanterns with low compact lighting (with lighting control) and low voltage lamps using AR111 and MR16 bulbs,’ says Graham W Smith. The team at CES also wanted to highlight carved ceiling features, like gargoyles, so they manufactured the lanterns with the option of ‘up lit’ polycarbonate panels to pick out the features, as well as providing traditional down-lighting.

Another challenge was lighting the ornate ceilings in the chancel while preserving medieval walls concealing the original plaques and paintings. ‘We designed a small metal trough to run along carving containing Osman high output dimmable tubes,’ explains Smith.

As with St. Mary’s Church, lighting was controlled in zones and directional lighting was used to illuminate keys features like the altar, font and a memorial bookcase.

UP TO THE TASKReducing costs as well as improving the atmosphere for staff is a big draw for companies considering changing from overhead to task lightingText: Tom Holmes

t’s widely acknowledged in lighting circles that task lighting consumes less energy than standard ceiling-mounted schemes, especially if care is taken to co-ordinate the lighting layout, task positions and orientation.

Most in the industry now see task lighting split into two solutions.

The first is the provision of desk lights in conjunction with a lower general background lighting level of 200-250 lux, and the second a use of desk-mounted direct or indirect lamps to provide flexible, high-quality illumination. Neither option is without its problems, which explains why widespread adoption of task lighting is yet to take place.

Of the former, Ian Macrae of Thorn Lighting says: ‘Task lighting is always a tricky one, as most buildings consider the lighting as a building service and so will provide sufficient light from ceiling-mounted luminaires and daylight.

‘There is a glimmer of change though, when you consider energy reduction, with this there may be moves to reduce ambient

lighting to more like 200lux, and then add task lighting locally if required.’

In a manner of speaking we’re in a position where much of the technology is ready but few are willing to adopt it for various reasons. Sustainability and working environment appear to be secondary considerations in light of the major hurdle: cost.

Few office block tenants would be willing to spend on additional task lighting when, as part of the tenancy agreement, lighting is supplied by the proprietor or landlord. That the additional saving in energy would go to the landlord is also unappealing to tenants. Who wants to spend money when they don’t have to?

Potential savings could be 55 per cent with ease, but it requires a change in the way landlords specify, fit out and let buildings

‘It (cost) is a major problem in the UK compared with the rest of Europe’ says Peter Young of Waldmann Lighting. ‘I’ve found that some buildings, particularly newer and more recently refurbished, are claiming excellent energy-saving, say, 12 watts per square metre, but when you check the lighting level on the data sheet provided by the developers, they are only providing 350 lux.

‘That calls for additional lighting, either task lighting on the desks or supplementary lighting, probably from indirect/direct luminaires mounted on the furniture or free standing. So the claim to have a sustainable building can be misleading.’

The reality of such schemes is high cost, high energy consumption and a lot of light pollution, the exact opposites of what the Government, and we as a nation are hoping to achieve. In most offices the standard lighting requirement is 500lux, achieved by a standard 1,500 grid system. Such systems are wasteful, as they don’t spread light where it is needed, illuminating carpets, radiators and desk in equal measure.

It is evident that progress precludes a change in attitude from all involved in the

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THORN IN THE NEXT 12-24 MONTHS?

‘Well it won’t simply be a move to only supply LED’ says Ian Macrae. ‘Our approach has always been to offer the best light source for the task, and LED in some cases still has some way to go. But there will be more LED options, better efficiency and more use of controls, plus a continued drive to include sustainability in our designs. Energy is not the only concern, as raw material prices continue to rise, particularly in copper, aluminium and rare earth metals (used in LED) we will continue to find ways to use less and to do so more responsibly. Part of the drive will be to look at the whole life implications of our products and their use. At the heart of our company and products is the provision of smart solutions and dependable performance, and our customers will still expect that from us next year and long after.’

progress. A consideration of cost, light and energy performance, working environment and what products will achieve this should be at the heart of every installation.

‘Potential savings in doing this could be 55 per cent with ease’ says Macrae, ‘but it requires a change in the way landlords specify, fit out and let buildings, and from the lease holder or user in how they add to the basic office space with furniture and fittings.’

Peter Young agrees: ‘We lit an office with an average 200 lux from a ceiling-based

lighting system, poorly distributed, and provided the client with desk mounted indirect/direct luminaires, with a presence and daylight sensor. This provided a simple, easy to install solution with flexibility for the user to determine their own preferred lighting level and provided lighting that benefitted the whole office, not just the desk.’

ProgressEnergy-efficiency is a buzz phrase in most industries, none more so than

WALDMANN LIGHTING INSTALLATION AT THYSSENKRUPP, ESSEN, GERMANY

The ThyssenKrupp corporate headquarters in Essen is among the most sustainable in Europe. Indeed the company, which runs on economically sustainable principles, was awarded a Golden Seal of Quality by the German Sustainable Building Council for its efforts in Essen.

Part of the success is down to an efficient lighting system, for which ThyssenKrupp contracted Waldmann Lighting. In each of the general and individual offices ,Waldmann installed its freestanding luminaire, ATARO. The

fitting is regulated by presence detection and daylight, and is therefore only switched on when needed, reducing energy consumption by up to 50 per cent. In addition, ATARO is fitted with a LON communication interface. The phone-operated system oversees room automation, energy efficiency, shade and heating.

Through such an intelligent solution, maximum flexibility of the interior design has been achieved, as well as reduced energy for all assembly sections in the room.

lighting. Bringing a product to market that isn’t energy-efficient is, and should be, considered a waste of time. As such, the task light has had to follow suit with the rest of the lighting industry in making itself greener.

As with so much of the lighting industry, LEDs are informing much of the change we’re seeing and will see in task lighting. Over the next two to three years they’re expected to revolutionise the task market.

‘The size and control options make it common sense, and the efficiency gains compared to tungsten and compact fluorescent make the choice even easier,’ says Macrae. ‘Great optical design and the light weight mean we can provide the right light to the right task and vary the output, intensity and direction with ease. It also adds the possibilities for more remote task lighting.’

He is, however quick to warn that there are limits with current technology, for instance balancing user comfort with efficiency.

‘It is possible to let more light out from smaller luminaires, but that leads to luminaires that are uncomfortable to look at, or that cause glare nn the screen of your tablet, PC or laptop.

‘At some point the legislators and users have to realise that the next step in energy reduction, particularly where lighting is concerned, is to utilise simple and effective lighting controls.’

In effect, this means that leading manufacturers will have to offer products that have greater energy efficiency and dimming controls or even integral sensors for daylight or absence detection. As the market grows, it will also be necessary to support products with better information, and provide financial assistance and solutions to ensure customers can exploit technology, design and funding options.

‘There will be a drive to push down energy usage and reduce energy costs,’ says Young. ‘But the need will remain to provide a good lighting solution with greater flexibility for the user and the building manager.

‘With new lamps outperforming LEDs for open-plan office lighting in both light output and energy usage, and a lower cost base for lamp-based luminaires, we still see the majority of solutions using single-source, lamp-based luminaires to provide a complete and effective lighting solution for offices.’

hen lighting sports facilities, energy performance and luminance are the major considerations, though balancing those with cost is always a deciding factor. As pressure increases on commercial and community buildings to reduce energy consumption, many facilities managers and building owners are looking to their lighting as the starting point in their carbon reduction mission. After all, lighting sports and leisure facilities can account for as much as 20 per cent

of total energy costs, so making changes to lighting applications is one of the simplest ways to save energy.

Of course the users of said facilities still expect to use them in much the same way as they always have done, so seamlessly integrating efficient lighting with performance has to be achieved with minimal disruption. With over 2,000 students using its facilities to study, train and compete, The University of Birmingham Sport (UBSport) is a prime example of this. It is one of the UK’s top two higher education sports hubs. Its alumni have represented the UK in athletics, played international hockey and rugby union, and reached the peaks of footballing excellence (Manchester United CEO, David Gill is a former student). As such UBSport has to ensure its facilities meet high standards.

DiagnosisThe university identified two areas for improvement. The Munrow Sports Centre, which forms the hub of the University of Birmingham’s indoor sports facilities, and the City North Sports badminton court, which is part of the £8m Doug Ellis sports centre, which opened in January 2010.

Contrac Lighting, one of the UK’s leading

manufacturers of energy efficient lighting solutions for the retail, industrial, commercial and leisure industries, was contracted to carry out improvements at the two venues.

Working closely with the university, Contrac developed a lighting design for the university’s City North Sports badminton court. The design, which had to keep energy requirements to a minimum while meeting the requirements of Sport England, involved lighting the court with higher luminance levels over the central area and across the full width of the courts. Consideration also had to be made for the visually impaired and partially sighted, which meant that lux levels needed to be variable from 50 to 150 per cent of the normal design.

The required levels were achieved by using 36 6x54w T5 Sportslux fittings – a robust, linear luminaire designed to withstand the daily rigours of sports hall activities while providing an energy efficient alternative to HID equivalents. The fittings were supplied with DALI dimmable control gear, which allow them to be fully controllable when used in conjunction with lighting controls and with a specially designed pyramid rear ball deflector to ensure that stray shuttlecocks from badminton matches would not get stuck on

lighting design for the UBSport’s Munrow Sports Centre. Here, the design had to be suitable for playing a range of different sports while remaining energy efficient and cost effective. Contrac proposed using 36 4x55w PLL Sportslux fittings in conjunction with long life lamps as this would provide the most cost effective solution while offering a high light output.

MOTH TO A FLAME

tudiotech, an energy-efficient lighting specialist, has carried out one of its largest installations to date, fitting 60 Green Moth LED lanterns in the White Rose

shopping centre car park in Leeds. The brief for the project was to replace the

existing 150w Son lanterns, retrofitting the Green Moths onto existing columns, with the aim of improving luminance and reducing energy. The project was carried out over five days, in which Studiotech cordoned off each column and retrofitted the new lamps, causing minimum disruption to the busy car park during peak trading hours.

The Green Moth street lighting specified by Studiotech uses less than 30 per cent of the energy of a traditional sodium lamp, and has a life span of up to 50,000 hours. The lamps are functional and stylish, giving excellent colour rendition, providing high definition for CCTVs, road users and pedestrians.

‘The new fittings were an easy retrofit to the existing columns’ say Tim Ashley of Studiotech. ’Because of the simplicity of the new luminaire, we were able to use all the

existing wiring which means that the overall project cost could be kept well within the budget and the energy savings will provide return on investment within a period of two years.’

Ashley adds: ‘There are a lot of LED lighting products available on the market today, some good, some not so good and because of the lack of legislation of LED product it is difficult to differentiate between the two.’

The project itself was a success, with light increased and energy reduced by 60 per cent. ‘We are very pleased with the final result’ says Ashley. ‘The new lighting has received very positive reviews from the centre management, tenants and public, and especially the security staff who, because of the increased colour rendition, can now identify cars by colour, and recognise individuals more readily.’

BOTTOMS UPLocated in La Coruña, a north-west pocket of Spain is the Abica wine bar – an authentic space to enjoy a glass of vino and witness the latest in LED technology in use

art of the Hostelea Group franchise of Galician wineries, when Abica opened its doors it wanted to offer its visitors something different, something special. As well as hosting a plethora of Galician

wines for the public to enjoy, it was important for an experience to be established, one which would attract customers and provide a platform to showcase regional foods and art in a sophisticated, yet relaxed setting.

What’s more as the design concept was to become a blueprint for The Hostelea Group’s future establishments, it needed to incorporate easy to maintain, energy efficient measures.

Megaman was called on to establish an energy efficient and low-maintenance lighting concept, not to the detriment of the sophisticated ambience the franchisee longed to create. To establish the notion, Antón Sáez Pérez, manager at Abica, worked closely with Miguel Pérez of Megaman to ensure a scheme with optimum energy and maintenance savings.

Pérez explains: ‘We wanted to choose a design that not only looked good but which, as a franchise template, was sustainable and could be replicated easily. By choosing to light the space with spot-lit areas within the restaurant, tapas and delicatessen areas, we have been able to communicate a sophisticated, yet relaxed mood to our Galician winery experience.’

Collectively, the pair decided the best option would be to use lamps from Megaman’s LED Reflector series, including 140 of the company’s LED AR111 15W GU10 range and 20 of Megaman’s LED PAR16 7W light sources.

The Reflector series is an authentic eco-replacement lighting solution for traditional

halogen, metal halide and incandescent applications, and is the driving force behind Megaman’s product development. Unlike many LED lamp manufacturers, the company uses reflectors instead of lens technology within its products to offer efficient LED lighting solutions. As the LED reflector lamps mimic the design of traditional light sources, they deliver excellent distribution of light and provide great energy saving when compared with conventional lamps of the same output.

The implementation of the lighting scheme has seen Abica achieve significant energy and cost efficiencies, compared with the traditional halogen reflectors the lamps replaced. These cost savings equate to £27,404 and 95.25tons of CO2 over the lifetime of the lamps.

In addition to these significant cost savings per outlet, Abica has also been very pleased with the light performance and life-span of the lamps. Both Megaman’s LED AR111 range and the LED PAR16 7W light sources bring together the energy efficient benefits of LED lamps and advanced reflector technology. What’s more, the performance of the LED AR111 range combines the ultimate in directional display lighting and energy efficiency with long lamp life; the LED AR111 range has can last for up to 30,000 hours, compared to an average of 3,000 hours of the halogen spotlights it replaces.

All in all, the lighting concept and savvy choice of products have shaped Abica into a well-lit environment that is warm, welcoming and, most importantly, relaxing. Best of all, the impressive lighting result consumes only a fraction of the energy of its halogen equivalents.

PROJECT FOCUS

The new head office for CB Richard Ellis is a striking example of how an imaginative design team can transform an ordinary office space into a stimulating, user-friendly and rewarding environment

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

ommercial real estate advisor, CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) wanted to update and transform its London head office to reflect the high standard offered by the company as a global player

in the property industry. Located adjacent to London’s famous

Oxford Street, the newly refurbished office was designed to meet the needs of CBRE’s wide variety of disciplines, which range from property sales and leasing, corporate services, interior design, property facilities and project management to mortgage banking and healthcare.

The in-house interior design team led by Adam Harris, drove the refurbishment of the space, while Yasser Sweidan

PROJECT FOCUS

managed the technical design. Harris and Sweidan had a clear vision of the project and were able to coordinate the programme smoothly, bringing in relevant contractors to deliver the scheme that had been developed.

In terms of lighting, the team needed the expertise of a firm which specialised in both contract and decorative lighting and could source a wide range of fittings, which would best illuminate the building in terms of lighting for function, ambiance and aesthetic use.

CBRE turned to Atrium, one of the most established names in the UK for lighting, with a well-deserved reputation for offering lighting excellence for architects and specifiers for architecturally-led schemes. CBRE chose a selection of products from Atrium’s roster of brands, including decorative and technical products from Flos and contract lighting from Modular and LTS.

Working with Trilectric, the nominated electrical contractor, Atrium supplied the LTS Light Channel in the grand reception area at the entrance to CBRE’s office. Several

lengths of Light Channel LK70 run in straight horizontal lines across the ceiling, mirroring strips of glossy tiling on the floor, which act as visual wayfinders for visitors approaching the reception desk. The LK70 is designed to ensure a high light output, ideal for the bright welcome feel the designers wanted to achieve for the space.

The in-house interior design team at CBRE wanted the luminaires in meeting rooms to have a decorative feel. This unusual decision allowed for far greater freedom in the appearance of each room, and created more visually interesting spaces for staff to work in. For example, two Sky Garden lights from Flos, inspired by a fabulous antique plaster ceiling in designer Marcel Wanders’ former home, were selected for one meeting room, their delicate plaster contours depicting an abundant scene of flowers and leaves. Another Flos fitting, the Long & Hard - and the antithesis of Sky Garden with its sleek linear, polished cast aluminium rippled

surface, and directional downward lighting – was specified for a similar meeting room but with stunningly differing results.

Atrium also installed the Lastra fitting, which comprises six heat-resistant glass shades pressed into a suspended clear glass sheet, designed by Antonio Citterio and Oliver Löw for Flos. This highly functional, attractive grouping is an example of successful task lighting that’s perfect for an office environment.

The design direction is continued throughout the building into the internal conference rooms, where Modular SL149 offer slices of bright light in the absence of natural daylight in the low-ceiled spaces.

The design team’s clear vision for the re-development of the offices made the transformation of the space an exciting and smooth process. Its selection of Atrium meant it could deliver the exact needs of the multi-disciplinary company, from playful decorative designs to functional, discreet installations.

SECURITY LIGHTING THAT MAKES SENSEThe benefits of exterior lighting have long been recognised by security professionals. However, the problems associated with inferior products such as rusted casings and poor quality PIR sensors can result in intermittent and unreliable lighting.

Many homeowners struggle to change lamps due to their position being out of reach or the casing being badly rusted.

At last there is an end to this frustration.

Pierlite, one of the world’s leading lighting manufacturers, has developed a series of high powered floodlights using energy efficient LED technology. This innovative range combines style with low power consumption without compromising traditional lighting performance.

LEDSense comes with extremely long lasting lamps providing around 35,000 hours life expectancy, overcoming the need to replace lamps frequently. The lights with PIR sensors are available in three sizes (LEDSense 1,2 and 3) or as a

permanent floodlight (LEDSense 4). The PIR sensor has been built to exacting high standards, providing a reliable operation with a range of 5 Metres and multi-angle rotation to 140 degrees.

Offering superb energy efficiency, the total power consumption ranges from 4.2W on the LEDSense 1 to 25W on the LEDSense 3 it does not affect performance and there is a timer facility on LEDSense 1 and 2 models.

With its stylish looks, robust aluminum casing and sturdy mounting bases, LEDSense is ideal for a variety of applications around commercial buildings, retail outlets and

residential homes for lighting driveways, passageways and gardens.

As with all Pierlite products, the LEDSense floodlight series has been developed and manufactured to deliver “watt it says” with the promoted light output being achieved through excellent quality, reliability and good lumen strength, available at an affordable price.

ATTRACTIVE, DIMMABLE LED LAMPS THAT PERFORMSince the discontinuation of the traditional GLS lamp, consumers have wanted an energy efficient lamp to work with dimmable products, whilst offering good levels of light.

Pierlite, one of the world’s leading lighting manufacturers has developed a range of energy efficient lights that really make a difference. Using LED dimmable technology, the PL-LED Energysaver lamps offer a guaranteed performance (better than the traditional 40W GLS lamps) at an affordable price. At last a cost-effective, attractive, efficient, dimmable low energy lamp is

available to consumers.

With a power consumption level of 7.5W, the LED module is encapsulated on a powder aluminum coated body, set within

an attractive opal thermoplastic diffuser

cover. Available with 450 or 550 lumen output in warm white or daylight

colours, for screw or bayonet fitting, PL-LED lamps provide a dimmable range of between 30% and 90% and will fit with most dimmers.

The PL-LED Energysaver has a life expectancy of approximately 35,000 hours, which equates typically to around 8 to 10 years in the home. Based on the traditional GLS style, the attractive energy saving lamp is ideal for use in many domestic, retail or light commercial environments.

As with all Pierlite products, the PL-LED Energysaver lamps have been developed and manufactured to satisfy demand for an energy saving and efficient source of light suitable for use in many applications. The PL-LED lamps deliver “watt they say” with the promoted light output being achieved through excellent quality, reliability and good lumen strength, at an affordable price.

Pierlite offers superior, innovative lighting products and are one of the leading lighting manufacturers in the world. Established in the 1930’s, Pierlite is part of the Gerard Lighting Corporation, employing 3,000 people worldwide, with manufacturing plants in four continents, producing over 3,000 product lines.

In the U.K., Pierlite has become recognised as a manufacturer and supplier of quality lighting products and of producing lighting design schemes. Based in Reading, Berkshire, Pierlite UK Ltd has a support team which includes a dedicated lighting design team with the very latest software and industry knowledge to produce bespoke schemes.

BLACK LIGHT BRINGS NATIONAL MINING MUSEUM TO LIFE AT NIGHTBlack Light has created two dramatic lighting installations at the National Mining Museum Scotland. The installations bring the pithead and gantry of the museum to life at night and create a new night time landmark in the Midlothian landscape.

The project uses innovative LED technology to create the illusion that the pit wheel at the 19th century Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange is once again turning. Similar technology is used to make it seem as if the famous gantry that crosses the A7 to the pithead is being thronged by miners carrying lamps.

“The project highlights our experience installing a wide range of architectural lighting schemes,” says Black Light’s Head of Company Development, Phil Haldane. “It shows that we are experts at working with, installing and programming LED systems.”

The installations have a high visual impact and really enhance the Museum at night. They are designed to draw in more visitors and to focus attention on the attraction. Rowan Brown, Director of the National Mining Museum said: “We are delighted to be able use this innovative lighting to emphasise the Lady Victoria Colliery’s status as a national landmark and recreate an important element of Scotland’s mining heritage.”

Black Light highlighted the framework of the pithead using Traxon dynamic white LED wash fittings. The wheels of the pithead are illuminated with several small 1W LED fittings. These were attached to the spokes of the wheels and are programmed to give the effect of the wheels of the pithead coming to life and turning.

The gantry Illumination was achieved by illuminating 30 of its windows with LED battens. The battens are programmed to give the effect of miners crossing the gantry, with the light effect of the miners leaving the colliery moving faster than the one of them going in! The scheme can also be set to specific pre-programmed colours or effects for special events or parties.

Black Light worked with the Museum and liaised with Historic Scotland to ensure that the project was carried out in strict accordance with all heritage conservation criteria. No permanent fixings were used in order to preserve the historic structures. All the removable fixings employed are non-ferrous and of the highest-grade stainless steel, to stop the installations rusting and damaging the pithead and gantry.

The National Mining Museum Scotland is the national coal mining museum for Scotland and cares for the Lady Victoria Colliery and the national coal mining collections. The collections at the museum comprise over 60,000 items, including objects, archive material, photographs and books.

MAINTAIN TO GAINRob Eadson, maintenance manager at Abacus Lighting, explains why effective, regular maintenance is essential to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of your lighting scheme

Health & Safety and litigationTo protect your lighting investment in the long term, and to ensure it is fully compliant with electrical and mechanical regulations and guidelines, on-going maintenance of exterior fittings is vital. You must prove that your facility is certified National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Consulting (NICEIC) compliant and you are obliged by law to undertake adequate precautions against the risk of death or personal injury from electricity.

Since the introduction of the Health and Safety Offences Act in 2009, it has become essential to follow good practice and maintain high standards, not only to protect your workforce and the general public, but to avoid serious legal ramifications too.

Masts and columnsIt’s not just the floodlights that need regular attention in order to ensure the

ith costs rising and everyone feeling the pinch in 2012, you may be tempted to consider maintenance of your lighting

installation an easy target for cutbacks. However this can very often be an expensive

mistake, ultimately leading to bigger capital investment further down the line.

Cost-efficiencyKeeping high-value equipment operating at all times is key to maximising your investment on any lighting project. Just one faulty lamp can cause major problems to an entire operation, whether it’s an insufficiently lit sports field, retail car park or airport runway. Down time costs heavily, as does replacing faulty equipment that’s been neglected or incorrectly used – a mistake that can easily be avoided easily with a low-cost maintenance package.

PerformanceRegular maintenance can improve the performance of your lighting scheme and ensure it continues working at optimum levels throughout its planned lifetime as well as safeguarding daily lighting levels.

Daily lighting levels are designed to achieve a maintained level of light below which light should not fall. This level can only be achieved by carrying out regular cleaning of the floodlight glass. According to The Society of Light & Lighting (part of CIBSE – the Chartered Institution of Building and Service Engineers), between 10 and 17 per cent of the output of a floodlight is lost through dirt depreciation over a three-year period without cleaning (dependent on the site location). So, a scheme’s lighting levels can be boosted simply by having the front glasses cleaned regularly.

safety and longevity of your lighting project. Lighting masts, be they fixed or hinged, are designed in compliance with the ILE Technical Report No. 7 (Institution of Lighting Engineers). Similarly, this design standard, which is recognised and accepted worldwide, stipulates a maintenance and inspection regime, which ensures your masts or poles remain safe. It is vital to ensure your maintenance regime involves the inspection of foundation bolts, security of floodlight brackets plus a range of other checks.

So, in summary, a little investment to ensure your lighting scheme is safe, cost-effective and reliable will really pay off in the long run by ensuring it is safe, accessible and attractive.
