ENDOMETRIOSIS

Diagnosis

Page 3: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

What is the cause of the fertility problem?

The growth of functioning endometrial tissue in places other than the uterus that often results in severe pain and infertility

The cause of the fertility problem is endometriosis

Page 4: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

How does it work?

The endometrium on the wall of the uterus is where the embryo is supposed to attach

This would cause problems for pregnancy because the cells, which inflames will leave scar tissues around organs that interfere with their normal functioning

Endometriosis vs Normal Uterus Diagram

Page 6: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

Why would this cause infertility?

The fallopian tubes and ovaries may adhere to the lining of the pelvis or to each other, restricting their movement

Endometriosis can cause damage and/or blockage to the inside of the fallopian tube, impeding the journey of the egg down the fallopian tube to the uterus

Treatment methods for Endometriosis

Hormone Drug Therapy (milder cases)Observation with no medical interventionLaparoscopy Surgery(severe cases)-small

incision is made and the doctor looks at the abdominal cavity, endometrial growths can be removed

Other surgery (Laparotomy or Hysterectomy)

ZIFT (ZYGOTE INTRAFALLOPIAN TRANSFER)

ART Treatment

Page 11: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

ZIFTa method assisting reproduction in cases of

infertility in which eggs are obtained from an ovary and fertilized with sperm in vitro and the resulting fertilized eggs are inserted into a fallopian tube by a laparoscope

Page 12: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

Why use ZIFT?

The fertilized egg is inserted directly into the fallopian tube

it prevents the eggs from sticking to other organs

Page 13: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

How does ZIFT work?

1) Eggs and sperm are collected

2) Fertilized in vitro

3) Inserted into the fallopian tube by a laparoscope

Page 14: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

Timing Issues

The time it takes to do the process is varied because ZIFT requires two procedures

Success rate is varied according to the woman’s age and own health

Page 15: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

Ethical Issues

High risk of multiple pregnancy

Caesarian birth with multiples

Page 16: Tootsie and Mike: Endometriosis

Success Rate and Cost

Success rate is about 36%

ZIFT costs between $7000-$8000
