ProblemMs Tina drove to the store to purchase toilet paper. She purchased 12 rolls and returned home. She discovered that the toilet paper rolls did not have a center hole.

The problem with this was that she could not place the rolls on her dispencer.

Page 3: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

In pairs, design 2 containers to hold and dispense 1 toilet roll each.

Process orderThink, plan, measure, design, test, construct prototype, test, (redesign if needed, test) construct final product.Helpful hints

● Spend time planning your nets on paper.● Check measurements of toilet roll.● Ensure your net will completely encase the toilet roll.● Ensure your net will allow for a replacement toilet roll.● Practice your net using paper first.● Make any adjustments, plan decorations and prepare prototype net for

copying.● Construct final net from prototype.● Decorate your final net before constructing it.● Test your product with the toilet roll.● Present your product to the class.

Be creative when naming your final product.

Design Challenge

Students will;● Apply their knowledge of geometrical skills to solve a problem.

o Calculate and use PIo Calculate circumference and area of a circle.o Measure and design a net to size.

● Apply their ideas and creativity to solve a problem.o Work collaboratively with others sharing ideaso Support others with issues such as remembering formulas.o Plan and build prototypeso Demonstrate pride when showing off the final design

Learning Intention

Success Criteria

Students have:● Produced a product that solves the problem.● Reflected on their process.● Recorded planning (including calculations &

prototype net plans).

Page 6: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

The Process - Measure

Students measured the circumference and area of the roll using a range of equipment.

Which tool should I use to measure the circumference and area of this roll?

Which formula do I use?

Circumference = π x d or π x r x 2

and Area = π x r2

Page 7: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

Students applied their knowledge of formulas to calculate area and volume for the size of their construction.

The Process - Calculate

Let’s check our calculations with a calculator!

Page 8: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

Students brainstormed ideas for containers before developing nets

The Process - Brainstorm Hmmmmmmm

Do you think this shape will work?

What if we rolled it like this…?

Page 9: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

The Process - Collaborate

Students collaborated on the design for the product.

How about we...

What about if we did this…?

Could we try doing this…?

Page 10: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

Students checked their calculations of the net designs

The Process - CalculationIf PI is 3.14 and to

get the area I have to multiply radius x

radius then the formula should be

π x r2

“But isn’t the formula for finding the area of a circle π x d?”“Ah… I don’t think so, isn’t it π x r2?”

Page 11: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

Students started making their nets for their dispenser prototype.

The Process - Prototypes

If we join multiple sheets of paper together we can draw our net in one go.

Page 12: Toilet Paper Net Challenge 5TC Solving Real Life Problems.

Students began constructing their prototype containers. But there was a problem… Some constructions were being made with individual pieces of paper and not nets

The Process - Construction

What is a net again? Ms Tina pulled apart a tissue box net

Final Products

My favourite part of the challenge was creating and decorating the product. Meet Chompy!

Creating this product was challenging. Getting the shape and measurements correct was difficult.
