26 entertainment Monday, 7 September 2015 TheNewAgeNewspaper @The_New_Age FINALLY reaching the last leg of her eight-nation Cuppy Takes Africa tour after a month-long successful trip from one African country to the next, Lagos-born beauty DJ Cuppy touched down in Johannesburg on August 25. She shared the multitude of fresh Afrocentric sounds that have helped propel her booming DJ career to worldwide acclaim. Believing that “the new mod- ern African woman is a woman of balance”, the hypersonic humani- tarian put on her philanthropic hat in partnership with the Dangote Foundation corporate responsibility charity, embark- ing on a crusade to connect with school kids, orphans, and women in different African countries, encouraging them to chase their dreams, pursue an education and stay positive. Completing seven jam-packed performances in Nigeria, Sen- egal, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda, Cuppy’s final show, which featured guest performances by Emmy G and Da Les, took place on Saturday August 29 at Harem nightclub in Rosebank. Naturally, DJ Cuppy dropped by TRACE headquar- ters not long after her arrival for a quick Q&A before her big night: Where does the name “Cuppy” originate from? When I decided to become a DJ at 16, I was obsessed with cupcakes. I gave myself the name DJ Cupcake. I soon tran- sitioned to DJ Cuppy as me and my brand grew older. Why was Joburg chosen as the final destination of your Cuppy Takes Africa tour? We wanted to end off on a high note so we chose a place that already has a booming DJ cul- ture and deep appreciation for the art of mixing, as many of the other countries we visited view the craft as a new form of crea- tivity that is still being explored. What excites you most about this particular leg of your tour? I’ve performed in South Africa twice before and I just love the hip hop music scene, the Johan- nesburg crowd, and its youthful demographic. What charitable work are you carrying out here spe- cifically? My team and I will visit the Dimphonyana Little Gifts of Home Orphanage in Centurion, where we’ll make both material and financial donations to their welfare as well as participate in dinner service. In your opinion, what’s the biggest misconception people have about female DJs? In a male-dominated world, your skill and competence is always questioned and there seems to always be an assumption that there’s a lack of expertise or pro- fessionalism in the art merely because I’m a woman.
