Countdowns

In this section, we provide you a weekly countdown of the best unforgettable Photographs

and moments in the history of football:

50 This picture captures the moment that David Beckham attempted the impossible and

subsequently achieved it, by scoring from the halfway line on the opening day of 1996/97

season. The boy wonder, who would go on to become England captain, showed exactly why he

was a key member of Sir Alex’s side with this strike.

To attempt something so ridiculous on the first day of the season explains the talent and

audacity that Beckham had at so young an age. The midfielder saw Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil

Sullivan off his line, before sending the ball looping over his head to go down in the annuls of

history.

49

Missing penalties are always a perfect opportunity to capture the unlucky player’s unforgettable

reaction and Southgate was no exception to the rule after the central defender had his spot kick

saved during the semi final of Euro ’96.

The former Aston Villa stalwart was left dejected on the pitch as England crashed out of their

own tournament on penalties to arch rivals Germany. The grey kit did not help matters and

Southgate is pictured as a forlorn figure, hoping the ground will swallow him up..

48 Flamboyant Colombian keeper Rene Higuita was the first person to introduce the scorpion kick to

the Western world, after showing off this audacious talent during a friendly with England at

Wembley in 1995.

The goalkeeper, who is also remembered for coming out of his goal in the 1990 World Cup to

disastrous results, decided to hit away Jamie Redknapp’s shot by kicking the ball with his heels

from behind his head, while airborne. Although hardly used in modern day football, this

unthinkable technique was a standout moment in the history of football skills.

47 Steve McClaren will go down in history as one of the worst England managers of all time, having

failed to lead the side to a major tournament. His miserable stint as the national boss was

summed up in England’s defeat at home to Croatia in November 2007, which confirmed their

exclusion from Euro 2008.

At a rainy Wembley, McClaren used an umbrella to keep the rain (and abuse) off of him, but

instead it only intensified the anger directed at him. The former Middlesbrough manager looked

even more hopeless under the red and blue FA brolly and the image of him standing on the

sidelines is almost laughable, had it not been so tragic.

General News

Ronaldo joins Messi, Platini and elite list of multiple Ballon d'Or winners

The Portugal star was crowned the world's best player for the second time in his career on Monday to

become only the 10th player to win the prestigious prize more than once.

The Portugal captain first lifted the prize back in 2008 after leading Manchester United to the Premier

League and Champions League, and joins a prestigious list of players to have been awarded the prize more

than once in their career.

Messi leads the way with four Ballons d'Or to his name, with Uefa president and France icon Michel Platini

level with Netherlands legends Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten on three.

Ronaldo joins such illustrious names as former Real Madrid striker Alfredo Di Stefano, Bayern legend Franz

Beckenbauer, ex-Liverpool and England star Kevin Keegan, former Germany hitman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

and Brazilian Ronaldo on two titles.

The 28-year-old, who received 27.99 per cent of the votes from national team coaches, captains and

selected media representatives to win the latest award, has already set his sights on further individual glory

as he aims to add to his two Ballons d'Or wins and six top-three nominations.

Ronaldo finished 2013 with a total of 69 goals in 59 appearances for club and country, including four in the

crucial World Cup playoff win over Sweden in the autumn.

He set a new record for goals in the Champions’ League group stages, netting nine strikes in just five

appearances, and was rewarded with a new contract to become the highest-paid player in Spain last

September.

Messi focused on Barcelona after Ballon d'Or disappointment, says

Zubizarreta

Lionel Messi will keep on focusing on the trophies that matter after losing his Fifa Ballon d'Or crown,

according to Barcelona director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.

The 26-year-old was the four-time defending champion of the award for the world's greatest footballer

before Cristiano Ronaldo's 2013 triumph on Monday in Zurich. But Zubizarreta insists that the setback will

not affect Messi one bit as he continues to strive for further honours with the Blaugrana and Argentina.

Ribery: Ballon d'Or was not an important goal

Franck Ribery has stressed that winning the Fifa Ballon d'Or was not an important objective for him as he

has set his sights on winning silverware with Bayern Munich and France.

The 30-year-old had to settle for third spot in the prestigious individual award behind winner Cristiano

Ronaldo and runner-up Lionel Messi, but Ribery was quick to stress that missing out on the trophy was not

too much of a disappointment for him.Cardiff has made a solid start in its fight to remain in the top flight,

with the club gaining 17 points from 18 fixtures and currently sitting 16th in the table.

Emotional Pele awarded Fifa Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur

The iconic former Brazil international was presented with the trophy in Monday's ceremony in Zurich having

been ineligible to lift the prize during his playing career

Pele struggled to hold back the tears after being awarded the first ever Fifa Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur. The

former Brazil international was ineligible to win the Ballon d'Or during his playing days as the original prize

was reserved for European footballers, but Pele was acknowledged by the world governing body with the

honorary award in the Ballon d'Or gala on Monday.

Pele scored 1,281 goals in his career, and is the only man to lift three World Cup titles, having triumphed in

1958, 1962 and 1970.

Pele was named Fifa Player of the Century in 2000, and part of the Fifa World Cup Dream Team two years

later. He later presented the 2013 Ballon d'Or trophy to Cristiano Ronaldo, who beat Lionel Messi and

Franck Ribery to the prize.

Heynckes wins Fifa Coach of the Year award

Former Bayern Munich head coach Jupp Heynckes has claimed the Fifa Coach of the Year award, seeing off

competition from Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp and retired Manchester United manager Sir Alex

Ferguson.

Heynckes led the Bavarian club to an unprecedented treble during 2012-13 before making way for Pep

Guardiola in the summer. Having picked up the award, Heynckes was quick to pay tribute to the staff who

helped him during his third and final spell in Munich.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic wins the Puskas Award

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has won the 2013 FIFA Puskás Award, with his audacious overhead kick against England

voted by FIFA.com and francefootball.fr users as the pick of an outstanding shortlist.

The Swede’s incredible strike was one of several spectacular moments produced for club and country over

recent seasons, and rounded off his hat-trick in a 4-2 friendly win in Stockholm. Even by Ibrahimovic’s

standards, the scissors kick he sent flashing into the net from 30 yards, adjusting to meet a clearing header

by Joe Hart, was something truly extraordinary. Few would have even attempted it, far less executed it to

perfection, with the ball sent the ball looping beyond the despairing English defenders.

Business News AS Monaco Sign Hair and Beauty Sponsor

Free-spending French Ligue 1 soccer side AS Monaco have signed Italian cosmetics brand Cotril as an official partner.

The one-year agreement will see the luxury brand become Les Rouge et Blanc’s official supplier of hair and beauty products. AS Monaco currently lie second in the Ligue 1 table, three points behind fellow big spenders Paris Saint-Germain. They will face Montpellier at the 32,000 capacity Stade de la Monson in their next Ligue 1 fixture on 10th January.

Mario Balotelli Signs Puma Boot Deal

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has signed a new boot deal with German brand Puma. The Italy international joins a host of top soccer stars on the brand’s endorsement roster, such as Sergio Agüero, Cesc Fàbregas, Marco Reus and Radamel Falcao. He will wear Puma’s evoPOWER Stampa FG line of boots.

According to Puma, Balotelli is a “key signing” for the brand who will “become a key asset” in its “brand and football communication over the coming years”. The 23-year-old will also “play a significant role” in promoting Puma’s ongoing partnership with the Italian Football Association (FIGC). “Puma’s support for the Italian national team was another instrumental reason for me signing this contract and I am sure that the coming years will bring many good things for us all,” Balotelli added.

FIFA And Visa Renew until 2022

World soccer’s governing body, Fifa, has extended its top-level sponsorship deal with global electronic payments provider Visa.

The new deal, which runs until 2022, secures Visa’s global marketing rights and product category exclusivity for the Russia 2018 World Cup, the following edition in Qatar four years later, and over 40 other Fifa events scheduled until then, such as the Women’s World Cup and the under-20 tournament.

Financial terms of the new agreement have not been disclosed, although the previous deal between the two parties was valued at around US$170 million.

Liverpool Agrees Nine new Deals Worldwide

Premier League soccer club Liverpool FC have agreed new TV deals with broadcasters in nine territories across the globe.

The 18-time English champions have engaged the services of Pitch International to secure the partnerships, which entitle each network to show footage from recent Liverpool games as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes programming.

Deals have been reached with BeIN Sport in Hong Kong, and the Middle East and France; with Kompass in Indonesia; Sony in India; Sommet in New Zealand; TV2 in Norway; Arena TV in the Balkans; Go TV in Malta; and with 365 Media in Iceland.

Interesting Football Facts The highest scoring soccer game was 149-0!

You’re probably wondering how a soccer team could be so bad that they let 149 goals be scored, but the truth is it was a form of protest. The event occurred in 2002 after a 2-2 draw between rival teams Stade Olympique de L’emyrne, or SOE, and AS Adema of Madagascar, which resulted in the referees awarding a penalty causing SOE to lose the game.

As a form of protest for being robbed of the title because of a penalty, the players purposefully scored 149 goals into their own net at the next game as spectators stormed the ticket booths demanding refunds. Besides being very confused at first, the opposing team eventually stood around in good humor at the planned stunt.

Barbados once had to score a goal on themselves in order to win a soccer match! This happened in a late game of the Caribbean Cup tournament in 1994. It sounds really strange but there's a really good reason for why Barbados had to do this. They were playing Grenada, and they needed to win by 2 goals in order to make it through to the next round of the tournament.

Although they had led for 2-0 most of the game, Grenada scored a goal in the 71st minute. The 2-1 score would have meant Barbados would've gone out of the tournament. So what did they have to do?

Force a tie, and go to overtime. The overtime would be played under golden goal rules (the first to score, wins) and the golden goal was worth 2 goals. Therefore, Barbados had a better chance at getting through by tying the game and scoring the golden goal.

A soccer player is credited for ending a 5 year war in his home country of the Ivory Coast! For five years in the Ivory Coast the north was held by the rebels and the south held by the government loyals. Didier Drogba plays for Chelsea in England and is the team captain and star striker for the Ivory Coast Elephants.

Drogba pleased the warring factions to have a cease-fire. Surprisingly, they heard him and a cease-fire was enacted. Drogba suggested in an interview that the game against Madagascar be played in Bouake, the rebel-north’s capital city. The game brought the whole country together for the first time in five years.

Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho first gained media attention after he scored every goal in a 23-0 game at age 13.

When Ronaldinho was only 8, he also began to show skills in football. When he was 13, and scored 23 goals in a 23-0 victory against a local team. He was identified as a rising star at the 1997 U-17 World Championship, where he scored two goals from penalty kicks.

A bolt of lightning killed an entire soccer team during a game in 1998!

In October of 1998 a bolt of lightning killed an entire 11-man soccer team from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The opposing team was completely unharmed. Thirty more people had burn injuries.

Ballon d'Or: Ronaldo rewarded for making miraculous mundane

Cristiano Ronaldo has banged his head against the brick wall for four years; now the brick wall has given

way. Ronaldo was apparently doomed to be forever tortured and defined by the achievements of Lionel

Messi. By regaining the Ballon d'Or from Messi, and winning the award for the first time since 2008, he has

provided emphatic confirmation that he is one of football's all-time greats.

It was an emotional night for Ronaldo, who was tearful when he received the trophy. "It means a lot to win

this after Eusébio's passing," he said. "I dedicate this award to him and my team-mates. He was watching

from the skies to see this great moment for a Portuguese player. When I saw my mum crying it made me cry

as well. I'm an emotional person. It is very difficult to win this award."

Let’s take a look at Cristiano Ronaldo’s statistics during the year 2013, comparing with his ballon d’or rivals
