From the Pastor and Teacher
Dear Friends,
A wonderfully creative colleague, the Rev. Molly Phinney Baskette, has made a yearly practice of a new Advent calendar: one of those that has a different thought or activity for each day of Advent and Christmas. This year I got the calendar in time to share it with you, and it’s a treasure.
Molly wrote a splendid introduction, as well. Here’s a part of it:
… Since we are basically animals, I believe in rhythms and cycles, the deep pull of biology, tides and seasons, in and out, up and down, work and play and rest. One rhythm I particularly live by is that there is a time for speaking, and a time for falling silent before the One who made us.
Advent and Christmas is a time ready-made for falling silent. Ironically, it’s hard to do. Our hymns sing loudly about silence. Our prayers and poems pile up tons of words about silence. We make the merry-go-rounds of parties and concerts and nine extra everythings, and the volume goes to eleven.
But here is a gift: the ancient stream of Christianity called apophatic prayer. As opposed to kataphatic prayer, wordy prayer, it honors silence. It is a spiritual practice of discovering God by subtraction instead of addition (what our forebears called: the via negativa). Apophatic prayer says: it is pointless to seek God intellectually, because we can never really know or understand God. Only a practice of growing still and silent makes union with God possible. In other words: shut your mouth once in a while, and open your spirit.

Falling silent doesn’t signal a permanent retreat from a world that needs our voices and action. It is a respectful engagement with that part of your God-given soul that demands a a period of active rest and listening, in order to engage again more fully and from a more grounded place.
Our God came to be with us in the person of Jesus. We were already so close--but God wanted us to be able to lay eyes on each other. And God came not first as a walking, talking rabbi, but as an infant. A pre-verbal God, as it were, at least for the first 12-18 months.
That’s the God I invite you to spend some time with this Advent and Christmas, every day, with this year’s calendar. A God who doesn’t need your carefully chosen words to connect with you, and know you, and love you. A God who knows you need to hush, meeting Her by subtraction instead of by addition.
Enough said. Let’s go hush up.
You’ll find the Advent-Christmas calendar on page 13.
May your Advent be filled with the gift silence and God’s mystery. May your Christmas be filled with the gift of God’s presence.
God’s richest blessings to you,
Pastor John A. Nelson

President’s Quarterly
Hello NCC. A lot has happened since my last quarterly update, but that seems to be the case for every update as NCC is always busy. We have just hired Amy Agles and Pam McCauley as Interim Christian Education and Youth Ministers to fill the position vacated by Russ Kirby. We are going to miss Russ but are lucky to have Amy and Pam filling in until we find his replacement. The process of forming a search committee for the vacant staff position has started; anyone wishing to join the search committee should notify me or Pastor John. For the most part, the CPACE project is complete. We were able to energize the solar panels in November and are now producing electricity. We owe Angela Lomanto and the Green Team a big thank you for leading us through this energy saving project. A Technology Ad Hoc committee has been formed to work towards creating a standing Technology Committee that would oversee all aspects of technology at NCC. It is not too late to join this committee, if anyone is interested contact Emily Mills, [email protected]. Pastor John has received a couple of proposals to upgrade the church website. The officers plan to discuss this project in December. The 2016 Annual Meeting is set for January 31st. That means this is the last President’s Quarterly coming from me. I would like to thank the Congregation, Prudential Board, and Officers for all your support and patience this past year. Being President at NCC is truly a rewarding experience. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Al Larson

Get Ready for Worship!
Follow the “Preparing for Sunday” link on our website (NianticCommunityChurch.org). You will find the scripture readings for the current week, a brief description to set them in context, a reflection on the passages, and a prayer starter. It’s a great way to spend time with God’s Word — and since those passages are (often) the basis for services on Sunday morning, you’ll be adding a new layer of richness and meaning to the experience of worship.

HISTORY QUIZ
Throughout the years the Sunday School classes
have collected for many different missions. But
Christmas is always a special time. Do you remember
what your Sunday School class did for the Christmas
Holiday?
The Kindergarten/Primary Dept. of NCC set up an
evergreen tree at the church on Lincoln St. Do you
know what was hung on it?
The Junior/Intermediate Dept. filled small red
cardboard stockings with coins. If you are from New
England did your church do it too? Do you know
where the money was sent and what the coin was?
Magnets with the church closing information are still available. Please be sure to stop by the church office and grab one.
Come Thou Long-Expected Church Directory
Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the coming of the Christ-Child. But this year, it has also become a time of waiting for the long-expected church directory. The Communications Committee recognizes that much time has passed since pictures were taken, and we sincerely apologize for the delay. Unfortunately, we're unable at this time to estimate with any certainty when the directories will be distributed, but we're working to see that it happens as soon as possible. We'll do our best to keep you updated as information becomes available.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Introducing the Interims
On November 23, 2015, NCC welcomed Pam McCauley (Christian Education) and Amy Agles (Youth Minister) as the new interims filling the role recently vacated by Russ Kirby. As members of Niantic Community Church’s congregation, these ladies are no strangers to the responsibilities and requirements of the positions. Amy formerly held the position of Interim Christian Education and Youth Minister in 2011. Pam worked as the NCC Sunday School Superintendent for 4 1/2 years and has either chaired or been involved with Vacation Bible School for about 10 years. They have both taught Church School and have been confirmation mentors. Amy has been on the Outreach Committee for about a decade; nine of which as a member of the team that makes and serves the New London Shelter meal with the Senior High youth. Pam has volunteered with the Middle School youth and the shelter meal intermittently, and has been a Parish Host for about 3 years. They continually volunteer in various youth activities and both have a wonderful rapport with the children. I have witnessed firsthand their ability to motivate and engage our youth.
Individually these two women are amazing and together…a dynamic duo! - Heather Larson, Communications Committee

All I Really Want – An Online Advent Reflection
The Journey Begins December 1st.
Follow along at home with All I Really Want by Rev. Quinn G. Caldwell. His readings for a modern Christmas combined with video and music is the perfect advent reflection for the season. Reflect on Advent in your time….your way.
“Let’s just get one thing straight: this book isn’t going to help you simplify the season. It’s not going to help you throw a stress free Christmas party or create the best Christmas ever in five easy steps. I’m not here to simplify anything for you. Neither is God. …. This book is actually designed to complicate the season. It’s here to invite you to think and pray a little more deeply about it. And this year, isn’t that all you really want?” ~ from the book
Books are available in the church office. ($11) Facilitated by Community Minister, Patty Chaffee. To participate in this Online Advent reflection go to www.NCCAdvent2015.org
Advent greetings to you! As I write this, tomorrow is Thanksgiving already with Christmas just weeks away. The calendar is filled with more activity than is wise. And yet it’s all good, and I find myself alternating from being overwhelmed by it all, to being very grateful for a life so abundant with blessing that I sometimes can barely keep up. I’ll bet you often feel the same way.
I find myself getting into the most trouble when life slows down and my mind gets too ambitious for my own good. Such was the situation a couple months ago when I got the brainstorm to do something I hadn’t done before. My brilliant idea was to offer an online program during Advent. I had no idea how to do it but trusted that my God would guide me as always. And I suspected it would appeal to many folks and families who, like me, don’t necessarily have the time to add one more commitment to their already overloaded schedules.
The idea was to create an opportunity to reflect on the Advent season in our own way, in our own time, at home, in the car, or at work (on your lunch break of course). Following along with Rev. Quinn Caldwell’s book All I Really Want-Readings for a Modern Christmas, as well as a blog I created at www.NCCAdvent2015.org, It is a chance to steal away some meaningful moments, exciting epiphanies or maybe just some soulful silence during this busiest time of year.
There will be links to videos to inspire and I plan to do a weekly blog post and may stop by in between with a thought here and there and I encourage you to do the same, posting comments and stories about your Advent experience to share with each other. All I Really Want has vintage charm, reflections and prayer, scripture, questions and simple suggestions to make your Christmas season just a bit more meaningful and filled with God’s presence. Because after all….isn’t that all we really want?
Books are available in the church office ($11) or at Amazon.com. www.NCCAdvent2015.org launches Tuesday, Dec. 1.

BOOK CLUB
The Women's Fellowship Book Club has selected "Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption" by Bryan Stevenson. This is the One Book One Region selection.
Bryan Stevens, the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, recounts his experiences as a lawyer working to assist those desperately in need, reflecting on his pursuit of the ideal of compassion in American justice. Please join in a fun discussion on December 6th at 7 pm. Any questions, contact Carol Donovan at [email protected].
History Quiz Answer
The tree was the “Mitten Tree”, where mittens, scarves,
and hats - many homemade - were hung. They were sent
to The East Harlem Protestant Parish in N.Y. The “Dime
Folders” went to The Deaconess Hospital School of
Nursing in Boston.
Anything Goes …minimize, simplify, organize
How it works: 1. Bring unwanted items that you
want to give away. If you can carry it, you can bring it. Bring as much as you want.
2. Bring one non-perishable food item for the NCC Food Pantry and a brown bag lunch to enjoy following the exchange.
3. Each participant offers their items in turn. See what others have to give away and claim all you want. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity immediately following our gathering.
10 a.m. on the 3rd Monday of each month

Women's Christian Service Association
The Women’s Christian Service Association (WCSA) held it's November meeting on Nov. 17th. After the meeting, Kristin Magnussen, MSN, RN, from the Ledge Light Health District Falls Prevention Coalition gave a very informative talk about how to prevent falls. She discussed the Personal Fall Risk Assessment and with winter coming, "How to Walk Like a Penguin on Icy Surfaces." The elderly are at greatest risk of falling, which happens in the home more than anywhere else.
If anyone is interested in this subject, WCSA has literature to give you. The Falls Prevention Coalition is trying to get the word out that they do Free in-home assessments. They can be reached at 860-448-4882.
Our December Christmas meeting is Dec 15th at 12:30. We have a Yankee Swap and everyone brings something to share to eat. It's always a fun meeting. All women in the church are invited to attend and if you need a ride, please call the church office or Patty Chaffee at (860)739-6208. We'd love to see you there. For more info, please call Karen Peacock 860-739-9996 or Carol June 860-739-8851.
