One of the advantages of being a large Community is the diversity of the social and recreational choices that our residents themselves over the years have introduced. We have exceptional talent and commitment within our residents, whether it be here at Bentley or down south at Australind, and this directly contributes to the wonderful lifestyle for which we are renowned. Our volunteers are special people As is our tradition, during the first week of December each year we celebrate International Volunteers Day by acknowledging the extraordinary efforts of our many volunteers. This year we will hold a “Masquerade Breakfast” to say “THANK- YOU” to our very special people.. In marking this day, I wish to convey my personal thanks to all of our volunteers who go about their business throughout the year making Bentley Park a better place to live. There are so many different roles that our volunteers are engaged in with each person bringing their individual talent, skill and commitment to their work. A number of studies have measured the value to the Australian economy of the time volunteers give doing a wide variety of volunteer jobs. Of course, it is not monetary reward that volunteers are seeking but the desire to contribute to their community. We appreciate that the services provided by this special group of people are essential to a non-profit organisation such as SwanCare Group and we acknowledge with gratitude the work they do. To us, they are TRULY SPECIAL PEOPLE. Paying tribute to our long serving staff A continuing tradition at SwanCare Group is to also recognise exceptional lengths of service amongst our staff. Around this time each year we recognise those staff who have achieved 10, 20, 25 and yes, even 30 years’ service to our organisation. In a challenging work environment and with the transient nature of today’s modern workforce it is truly an amazing achievement that we can celebrate and recognise service periods of such great length. We pride ourselves as being an employer of choice in the aged care sector. We want to make our employees feel proud of working for SwanCare Group and we try to ensure that they are continually acknowledged and appreciated for their hard work and commitment. When I see lengths of service such as this I get a sense of validation that we must be doing things right. This year we acknowledged the following staff members with 10 years service, Sheryl Edwards from Hospitality, Carole Boyd, Maria Bacaron, Angela Wright and Teresa Gonzales all from Residential Care, Fiona Millar and Ronnie Deans from Admin. In addition, this year we also acknowledged 25 years of service from our much valued, loved and respected librarian Penny Felder. We are very proud of all these wonderful staff members. Changes at Board Level At the SwanCare Group AGM held at the end of November, Martin Dunleavy, Chair for the past six years decided to hand over the baton of leadership. Martin was the Chair of SwanCare Group during a very challenging period in which he oversaw major changes in the way that the organisation went about its business. During Martin’s tenure he established a strong focus on governance and detailed strategic planning, which has enabled SwanCare Group to re-build its financial position and create a stable and sustainable business platform. With Martin stepping down, the Board unanimously elected Julian Keys to the position of Board Chair. Julian has been Martin’s Deputy for the past three years, and has been instrumental in driving the association’s re-focus on governance and strategy. Julian also has a wealth of knowledge in the field of human resources and training and these skills have been greatly valued during his current tenure. Julian is keen to continue the excellent work and build upon the solid foundation and platform that Martin has delivered. To assist Julian, the Board elected Professor Robin Watts to the position of Deputy Chair. Robin has been a member of the board for 18 months and her skills as specialist nursing practitioner coupled with her detailed understanding of clinical governance and ethics have been a great asset to the Board. As per the constitution, both Julian and Robin have been appointed for a period of one year. In addition to the two new Board positions, there were also changes to the Village Resident Advisory Council (VRAC) representatives. As you all know, SwanCare Group is one of the only villages where residents actually get a seat at the Board table, in our case two seats. We find this an extremely valuable addition to the running of the organisation and the input from the village members is very much appreciated. CEO’s Report

role of VRAC President and hence, Board representative number one. Brian was on the Board for two years and provided valuable input and insightful comment on the concerns, needs and aspirations of the village residents whom he so diligently and conscientiously represented. Replacing Brian as the VRAC Board representative number one is his previous Deputy and now new Chair of the VRAC, Carolyn Wellstead. The second VRAC representative to the Board will be Tom Brazier. Residents can be assured that Carolyn and Tom will continue with the great work of representing your concerns at Board level.

Out and AboutDuring the month I had great pleasure in attending several functions and special events held in the village, and my sincere thanks and praise go out to the hard working team of organisers that bring these functions together. We seem to have established an enviable ability to run and organise wonderful events, which are always well attended and enjoyed by residents. This month I attended the following …. The Volunteer Morning Tea held at Kingia to say thank-you and to acknowledge the dedication and commitment that our volunteers provide day in and day out towards helping to make the lives of our residents in care that much more fulfilling and enriching. The Melbourne Cup Luncheon run by the Bentley Park Social Club was a wonderful success and enjoyed by a large number of residents – it was a huge winner .. unlike my horses !! The Annual Undercroft Bowls challenge again showed up the prowess of our residents as they managed to thoroughly humiliate and embarrass admin staff with their amazing bowling skills and likewise highlight the dismal lack of bowling ability that emanates from within the admin ranks. Definitely more practice is needed ….. The Australind Rise Project Control Group (PCG) Meeting. The final PCG meeting was held during the month in the recently completed community centre and it highlighted to me the tremendous potential of this superb venue. The residents did a marvellous job in catering and organising the event. Clearly we are very fortunate to have a very dedicated, proud and enthusiastic group of Australind Rise residents who are great ambassadors for the community and all that this South West lifestyle has to offer. And finally …. as this will be the last Tidings for 2012, I wish all residents and friends of Bentley Park a wonderful, safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year. See you around the village …. Graham Francis, Chief Executive Officer

Bentley Park Social Club

Well, the Melbourne Cup – and the Village luncheon – has come and gone for another year. It was very successful from all aspects of attendance, food, the Sweeps of course, and great entertainment by Les Meade. We were also pleased to welcome some of the Administration staff, who joined in the festivities. The Town of Victoria Park Brass Band will entertain residents on Friday evening, the 14th December on the grassed area near the Stratton Centre/Peter’s Pavilion and the Christmas atmosphere will be a great attraction, including seasonal fare. Following this, will be the New Year’s Eve celebrations, for which table allocations will be required. Tickets will be available on the 12th December, and after that date from Administration Reception.

Op ShopThe Op Shop is doing very well indeed at the moment, including managing to sell some of the larger furniture pieces which had been donated. Please note: The Op Shop staff will all be attending the Volunteers’ Breakfast on Wednesday, 5th December, so the premises will not be open until 10am on that day. There will be a Dollar Sale on clothing on

Saturday, 22nd December - the last opening

day until Saturday, 5th January 2013.

RecyclingA large load of recycled newspaper (5.8

tonnes) was removed recently from Bentley

Park premises which provided further funds

for activities for Village residents.

AGMThe Bentley Park Social Club Annual General

Meeting will be held on Friday, 18th January

at 9am, and all residents are invited to

attend. Coffee and tea will be available.

All Committee Members are elected for two

years and may stand for re-election but are

limited to four years before they must stand

down. Currently, there are three (3) vacancies

on the Committee due to ill-health.

Please fill in the form below - your input

will be very welcome – and come along

to the meeting to join up for a stint on the

Committee, bringing your enthusiasm and

commitment to ensure that events are

the best they can be for the benefit of all

Villagers.

SwanCare Group Rewards and Recognition ProgramIn September this year, a group of staff from SwanCare Group were gathered together to develop a meaningful Rewards and Recognition Program for the employees of SwanCare Group. The idea of this group was to develop a programme to show SwanCare Group staff how valued they are to the organisation. Much progress has been made and the program is scheduled to be launched in February, 2013. Part of the group’s work was to discover what employees wanted to be recognised for and what they felt were good rewards. A staff survey was circulated with a very positive response from across the organisation. A lot of information has been gathered to make SwanCare Group’s Rewards and Recognition Program something that will give back to the employees who deserve recognition and hopefully further enhance the care we deliver to our residents and their families. The group thanks everyone who participated in the survey and we were delighted to see so many people attend the morning tea on Friday 9th November at Tandara. The four winners were announced and Kym was on hand to present the 50 dollar notes! Corrina Alderson, EN from Waminda, Marie Meetoo, PCC from Tandara and Ann Royal from Food Services.

Debbie Mitchell, Housekeeping Attendant was on leave on the day of the morning tea but has since received her prize. All are $50.00 richer after their random selection from all survey entries. SwanCare Group’s Rewards and Recognition Program? Watch this space!!!

Bentley Park NewsBentley Park - RowethorpeAs it is now only 3 weeks to Christmas we would like to remind residents that thieves will be looking for easy pickings. They know that you will have bought presents, in some cases special gifts for your loved ones, this of course what they are after, so please be extra careful about security, do not just POP to the laundry, shop or the neighbours without locking your doors and closing the windows. The delegates of Neighbourhood Watch will not be meeting again until the second Wednesday of March 2013 and at three monthly intervals thereafter. Thank you to all the Delegates for giving up your time this year to assist Neighbourhood Watch. Remember the Security phone

number is 6250 0020. We wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Tony Ryder, Coordinator

Calling CentrelinkI get many calls in my office from seniors regarding extensive delays when calling Centrelink. This is not an acceptable standard and the Government agrees. Cutting the time people have to spend on hold remains a key priority and waiting times have been reduced. Last year, Centrelink introduced a call-back service on the main service lines, for citizens using mobile phones. They can go about their business while their call advances in the queue. It is a practical way to save their time and money. I can now advise you that this service will soon extend to all landline calls as well. Call-backs to landlines are already available on the Seniors and Families numbers – and by Christmas, they will be available on every Centrelink line. To take advantage of this service, seniors simply need to be registered. This can be done by calling 13 62 40 or online at www.humanservices.gov.au/register . Please feel free to share this information with your members, friends and family. Social Club DonationOn Wednesday the 24th of October the Treasurer of the Bentley Park Social Club, Mr Laurie Hudson, handed over a cheque for $1633 on behalf of the Bentley Park Social Club to Kingia/Tandara Care Facility Manager Emma Brierty.

This generous donation has enabled us to purchase a new digital camera, a set of Carpet Bowls, a stereo system for the Sensory Lounge when it is completed and an oil burner with sensory oils also for the Sensory Lounge. These items mean that our residents get to enjoy many different experiences which we can now capture with the new camera. Thank you very much to all the members of the Bentley Park Social Club for your efforts and donation. Your kind donation is much appreciated by residents and staff in Kingia and Tandara.

Stratton Luncheon/ConcertShirley & Peter Brunt host a Luncheon and Concert at the Stratton Centre on the 1st Friday of each month from 11:30 – 2:30pm. This includes a Fish & Chip luncheon, wine, beer and soft drinks, a 1hr concert by quality performers and afternoon tea or coffee and cakes. The cost is $10 all inclusive. To obtain a ticket ring Shirley on 9355 4767. Please be early as it books out very quickly.

Kingia/Tandara High Care Auxil iary

Well here we are at the beginning of the

Festive Season once again and as this is

the last Tidings issue for 2012, I thought I

would take this opportunity to giving you an

overview of the progress the Auxiliary has

made over the last year.

The committee and I were all beginners as

from the last AGM and I feel that we have

had a very successful year opening the year

with a healthy bank balance of $3894.81.

With the support of all our members and

friends we have enjoyed some great outings,

interesting speakers and visits from the

fashion houses.

One of the most rewarding items is the rise

in membership and we are proud to tell

you that you are one of 123 members at

this time. We have had a nice lot of visiting

friends as well and we hope that in the future

you may decide to join our ranks and enjoy

the fun.

As you are aware the aim of the Auxiliary is

to raise funds for our Care Centres and we

do this in many different ways. Our monthly

meetings bring a small revenue but mostly

our funds are raised from the two large

events each year being the Spring Lunch and

our Annual Fete.

This year however the members voted to

add a small amount to each of our outing

costs and this has boosted our funds as

well. Thank you all.

The spring lunch held in September was

again a great success; $1631.40 was raised

from this event. Fabulous, thank you to all for

supporting this event and of course a special

“Thank You” to our co-ordinator Lorraine

Pittaway and her valiant assistant Maureen

Thompson for their hard work in organising

the food and thanks also to the committee

and friends who helped with the serving etc.

Our second event for the year has just past

and this was our Annual Fete held on the

12th November. Well what an event that

was, hope you all enjoyed it and thanks

too, to the other clubs being Handicraft,

Pottery, Private stalls etc. who joined us in

contributing to the morning.

The winner of the Annual Fete Raffle was

Wyn Tye – Congratulations Wyn!

This event I am very pleased to say raised

$1072.45 taking our fund-raising for 2012

$5211.76!!

From these funds we were able to purchase

the following items for the Care Centres:

Folder beds $698.19

Micro stereo system/iPods $1078.00

Hair dryer $500.00

Wheel chairs $1232.50

Pump $1790.00

Total expenditure $5298.69

So well done to everyone for a wonderful

year of work and play with the added benefit

of making a difference to our friends in the

Care Centres.

I would like to say a special “thank you”

to all members of the Committee for their

dedication and unending work to make all

the above possible. Unfortunately our very

accomplished Secretary is having to leave

us due to other commitments, we will miss

you Carolyn, a fabulous job. Our Treasurer

was new to the job this year and again I can’t

thank Frankie enough for her support and

wonderful financial reporting. We always

knew how much we could spend!! Lorraine

has already been thanked for her terrific

input this year but again we thank you.

Last but by no means least is our Vice

President Pat, who works away in the

background organising the afternoon tea

each month, co-ordinating people to help

her, and running the meetings when I am not

available, “thank you” most sincerely. From

an early start on the Tuesday mornings to

actually serving the tea and coffee, Pat is

there. Without her we all would go dry!

Finally to all the people who have assisted us

this year or joined us on our many outings,

Thank You for your support. I hope you will

join us again in 2013 when we have great

plans for more events and of course fund

raising. The AGM will have passed by the

time this Tidings goes to print, so I hope you

will give the 2013 President and Committee

your continuing support in the New Year.

In closing I would like to take this opportunity

to wish you all a very Happy Festive Season

from the Committee and myself.

Your Committee: Pat Wells Vice President,

Carolyn Wellstead Secretary, Frankie

Comstive Treasurer, Lorraine Pittaway Events

Co-ordinator.

See you all there.

Residents Advisory Council

The end of October marked Brian Dale’s retirement from the VRAC – I am sure that all residents will agree that he has been an excellent Chairman and I have enjoyed working with him over the past three years. I hope everyone will be patient with me as I attempt “to fill his shoes”. The office bearers for the forthcoming year will be me (Carolyn Wellstead) as Chairwoman, Cath Devereaux as Vice-Chairwoman and Tom Brazier as Board Representative. The council has, in its Terms

of Reference, the ability to nominate a person other than the Vice-Chair to attend SwanCare Board and Committee Meetings and as Cath has an extremely busy workload in 2013, Tom has offered to cover these meetings in her place. The balance of the council consists of Shirley Barnes, Ken Sinclair and our newest member, John Jacobs. We trust that John will find his period on the council as interesting and informative as do other members and obtains satisfaction in participation of the council’s role as a conduit between the residents and management of Bentley Park. A reminder that our Coffee Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 9.30am in the Auditorium, followed by morning tea. We particularly urge

new residents to attend, as this is a good way to find out what issues are being discussed in the village. The VRAC wishes all residents a safe, healthy and happy Xmas – if you need us over the festive season, council members can be contacted on the numbers listed. Carolyn Wellstead Ph: 6250 0505

The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back! If you decide to join, the membership fee is only $5 per year and you pay 20c for each frame played. Think about it, come along, or give me a ring. Peter Brunt, President Ph: 9355 4767

DARTS CLUBDarts are on Tuesday and Friday at 6.30pm. Don Mabbott, President

The Writer’s Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work. We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Handicraft Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. Because of declining numbers, the Group may soon have to finish; it seems people don’t write so much now in these days of texting. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. Anyone interested would be welcome to come and listen to the readings before deciding to join us. The meeting for December will be on Thursday 6th, at 09.30 am. Because of the Christmas break, there will only be one meeting this month. Also, this will be my last meeting as convenor, but it is hoped the group will continue to meet and discuss writings in the spirit we have always shared. Season’s Greetings to all, Reg Gooch, 94726132.

Our match against the Undercroft Bowling Club, scheduled for 3rd November had to be postponed and hopefully will be rescheduled for early in the New Year under lights. New air conditioning has been installed in the Leisure Centre and is very much appreciated. Our thanks to The CEO, Graham Francis, for his support and his staff for the installation of the air conditioner – it was certainly put to use on Saturday 17th November following our Gala Day, it was most comfortable and relaxing after a rather warm afternoon on the green. Our last Gala Day for the year, The Cleaver Family Trophy, was held on Saturday 17th November and the winners were the team of Mike Post, Gwen Gorey, Jack Matthews and Beryl Moule – congratulation to all. Saturday 1st December will be the start of Night Bowls commencing at 6.00pm. The start of our club’s Christmas festivities commence Thursdsay 6th December. We are off for a Christmas lunch at the Clansman Resort/Restaurant at Ravenswood. The buses leave at 10.30am. On Saturday the 15th December our Annual Christmas Social will be held in the Leisure Centre commencing at 6.00pm to 9.00pm. Entry $3.00 to cover cost of entertainment, payment at the door. Remember BYO food, nibblies and drinks. The climax for the evening will be the drawing of our Christmas Raffle – 7 great prizes to be won. Finally, as this will be the last Tidings for the year, I would like to wish all Members, Village Residents and Staff of Swan Care Group a very happy and peaceful Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. Free BatteriesThanks again to all those who recycle batteries etc. through my collection containers. To amuse myself, I test most of the batteries before disposal and find a small percentage with plenty of charge left in them. I would like to give these good batteries to any residents who need them. Examples of good batteries are: • Rechargeable AA and AAA; • Non rechargeable AA and AAA; • C and D; • 9 volt; • Small 12V batteries to suit car remotes etc.

If you want any of these batteries, please ring me on 6250 0461. If no answer, please leave a message stating what you want and your address. Alternatively, leave a message in the collection box nearest you. I will deliver to you if required. Allan Manning

Thank YouMy heartfelt thanks to staff and my friends of Bentley Park who sent sympathy cards to my family and I when my dear husband Keith died on 10th October 2012.

The care and help he received from Tandara nursing staff was outstanding. I must thank Scott and Peter from maintenance. Thank you so much.
