Q: One of my favorite comedic ac-tors to come from “Saturday NightLive” since Will Ferrell is KristenWiig. When is she going to get a star-ring role in her own feature film? —Pamela Z., via e-mail

A: The hilarious 36-year-old actressis joining forces with Judd Apatow

and Paul Feig (the “Freaks and Geeks” dynamic duo) to bring to life heruntitled comedy, which she wrote and stars in. The movie features Kristen asa maid of honor who is competing with a bridesmaid (played by Rose Byrneof “Damages” on FX) for the attention of the bride. Also attached to theproject are Jon Hamm (of AMC’s “Mad Men”), Dianne Wiest and “SNL”alumnus Maya Rudolph. The movie is scheduled for a May 2011 release.

• • •Q: So many movies franchises are putting out

sequels lately, i.e.: “Ironman,” “Shrek,” etc. Whenis my favorite franchise, “Men in Black,” going toreboot? — Kevin D., Annapolis, Md.

A: Word is that “Men in Black III” in 3-D hasbeen green-lighted for a May 25, 2012 release date.Star Will Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld arealready aboard, and final negotiations (as of thiswriting) are in place with Tommy Lee Jones. Thereis also talk that Josh Brolin is set to portray ayounger version of Tommy Lee Jones’ character,Agent Kay.

• • •Q: I really love all the child actors who were on “7th Heaven,” especially

the girl who played the youngest daughter. Can you tell me what she is doingnow? — Corrine J., Fort Worth, Texas

A: Mackenzie Rosman, who portrayed Ruthie Camden in the popular CWseries, played a guest-starring role on ABC Family’s “TheSecret Life of the American Teenager” as Zoe. The 20-year-old former child star also recently completed workon the horror movie, “Fading of the Cries,” which isscheduled to hit theaters later this year. Judging by thetrailer, I am thinking that will wipe any traces of RuthieCamden from your mind!

• • •Q: I love watching “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and

I am familiar with her mother, as Ellen talks about herall the time, but I don’t know if I’ve ever heard her men-tion any siblings. Does Ellen have any brothers or sis-ters? — Betty, via e-mail

A: Ellen has one sibling, a brother named VanceDeGeneres. Vance is an actor, musician and producer. He is best known for his two-year stint on “The DailyShow With Jon Stewart,” where he presented “DatelineNBC”-type pieces, called “Tale of Survival,” where hewould “report” a mundane experience (a cat being stuckin a tree) as a newsworthy, melodramatic occurrence. For most of 2007, he was the rhythm guitarist for theband Cowboy Mouth. He currently co-runs Carousel Pro-ductions at Warner Bros., which is Steve Carell’s pro-

duction company. Car-ousel has quite a fewprojects in the hopper, including “Hi-T” and“Mail-Order Groom,”both starring SteveCarell.

Carrots are sprouting up all over! While seeds have already germinated andburst through the soil in our vegetablegarden, fresh green carrot tops pop outof the frosting of whimsical carrot cakecupcakes on our kitchen counter, too.

Thinking “outside the recipe,” myfriends and I came up with a lighter andmore contemporary version of our tried-and-true carrot cake recipes. Lemon zestis added to the batter, and the quantity ofconfectioner’s sugar in the traditionalcream-cheese frosting is greatly reduced. And, of course, the whimsy of the carrotdecoration is definitely “the icing on thecake.”

Bake this batch of 24 cupcakes withyour kids for a yummy dessert treat,

Carrot Cake GardenCupcakes

share a few with neighbors, and leave a severalunfrosted for a morning or afternoon snack with a cupof coffee or glass of cold milk. They freeze well, too.

Ingredients for 24 cupcakes:

2 cups granulated sugar1 1/3 cups canola oil4 eggs1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract2 cups all-purpose unbleached flour2 teaspoons baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt2 teaspoons ground cinnamon3 cups grated carrots1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, well-drained1 cup raisins1 cup chopped walnuts1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)

Ingredients for frosting:1 pound cream cheese at room temperature

1/2 pound unsalted butter at room temperature2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract1 1/3 cups confectioner’s sugar, siftedOrange food coloringCarrot-top greens or sprigs of parsley

Preheat oven to 350 F. Let kids fill muffin tins with24 paper liners.

In a large bowl, beat the sugar, oil and eggs to-gether. Add vanilla.

In another bowl, the kids may measure and sift to-gether the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Addthese dry ingredients to the bowl of wet ingredientsand stir well.

Stir in carrots, drained pineapple, raisins, walnutsand zest.

Divide batter evenly among muffin cups. Bake for25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centerscomes out clean. Let cool completely on wire rack.

For frosting, cream together cream cheese, butterand vanilla in a mixing bowl. Slowly addconfectioner’s sugar and continue beating untilsmooth.

For carrot decoration, stir together 3-4 tablespoonsof frosting with orange food coloring. Spoon into asandwich-size plastic food bag. Clip off a tiny bit froma bottom corner of the bag and gently squeeze frost-ing out in zigzag fashion to form a carrot shape onfrosted cupcakes. Top with fresh carrot-top greens orparsley.

Extra tip: For an earthy taste to walnuts, toast themon a tray in a 350 F oven for 6 to 8 minutes. Cool andchop.

The rate of those of us having mental issues involvinganxiety seems to decline a bit as we advance in age. Onthe other hand, if we have depression, it can be harder totreat in seniors. So say two recent studies.

The first study compared people of all age groups tosee which group had more anxiety disorders, and then fo-cused on older age groups (55-64 years, 65-74 years, 75-84 years and 85 years and up) and compared them over a12-month period.

The results showed that, yes, there was an overall de-cline in mood disorders as the participants aged. Womenhad more disorders than men, however. Even though thereis a decline in mood disorders, anxiety remains very com-mon, especially in women.

Mood Disorders

Right on the heels of this study was another concerningdepression in later life. Researchers claimed that depressionin seniors is harder to treat, but at least they now have a clueas to why: Those with depression “don’t respond normally toemotional stimuli,” such as faces that are neutral, happy orsad.

Participants (both healthy and depressed seniors) were firstasked to look at pictures of other people and rate them only byphysical features.

The result was that seniors without depression took longerto rate the physical features, likely because happy or sad ex-pressions on the faces affected them and delayed a response.

Participants were then asked to rate the expression on thefaces in the photos.

Seniors with depression weren’t distracted at all by any ex-pression. It didn’t matter if it was a happy, neutral or sad face.Additionally — and this is key — depressed seniors had aharder time identifying which emotion was being expressed inthe photo.

This is apparently the first seniors-centered study that lookedat depression from this angle. I can envision new treatmentsusing this facial emotion recognition, perhaps paired with coun-seling to augment the drugs that are typically given.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR opened its Hallof Fame on May 11, giving stock-car racing a shrineto rival baseball’s in Cooperstown, N.Y., football’s inCanton, Ohio, and basketball’s in Springfield, Mass.

As former Charlotte Motor Speedway presidentH.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, noted, “This is where thepeach basket was putup in 1949, right outon Little Rock Roadnear the airport.”

Wheeler was referring to the site of NASCAR’s first majorrace, run on June 19, 1949, on a 3/4-mile dirt track that existedthrough 1956. That track was located near the present site of Char-lotte Douglas International Airport.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame occupies a prominent share of thedowntown skyline. Itbears some resem-blance to the CountryMusic Hall of Fameand Museum in Nash-ville. Above its mas-sive walls, the Halltakes an oval shape, and there’s a practicalreason. Inside, thatoval shape translatesinto something of asimulated short track— and also a bankedramp to the second

floor — with still, full-sized race cars placed around it, frozen infanciful race mode.

The main floor is 10,000 square feet. Exhibit space exceeds40,000 square feet. The overall budget was $154.5 million. Theexhibit budget alone was $31 million.

The May 23 Induction Ceremony will officially enshrineNASCAR founder William H.G. (Big Bill) France; his successorand son, William C. (Bill Jr.) France; Richard Petty, stock-carracing’s most prolific winner; Dale Earnhardt, the only other driverto win seven championships; and Junior Johnson, who earned en-during fame as driver, mechanic and owner.

NASCAR has been around since 1948, but only five men getinto the Hall of Fame each year. Inductions in succeeding yearswill be eagerly anticipated with legendary drivers like DavidPearson, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, LeePetty and Curtis Turner still waiting in the wings, so to speak.

Among the Hall’s features:

Pug SmellsReally GnarlyDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 1-year-old

pug that really smells. I take “Deb” to have herbathed, and a day later she smells again. I wasgiving her a bath every week and was told that itwould dry out her skin. What should I do about it?I hate to give her up, butshe smells really bad.Sign me — Pinching MyNose in Rochester, N.Y.

give it up. But I have owned a few smelly dogs inmy lifetime. In most cases of chronic odiferousness,a skin problem or other medical condition is theculprit.

That’s why I would recommend you take Deb toa veterinarian who has experience with pugs andtheir unique issues. Any time a dog’s odor is fre-quently and noticeably unpleasant — not just whenyou get up close to their fur and sniff, but almostliterally “Oh man, Deb’s in the room,” you shouldhave her checked out.

One problem that’s been noted in pugsis yeast infections, which can produce arather gnarly smell. Dogs prone to theseinfections need careful monitoring andshouldn’t be bathed too much (as dry skin

can worsen the problem).Because pugs can suffer from skin problems

and allergies, you want to be careful about howfrequently Deb is bathed and what shampoosare used. Talk to the vet about best groomingpractices for a pug.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A 50-year-old friend of mine was diagnosed with leiomyoma

of the uterus. Does this have anything to do with fibroids? She has fibroids, but her

doctor says they are best left alone, since they shrink at menopause. What causes lei-

omyoma? Can it become cancer? What treatments are available? — L.B.

ANSWER: “Leiomyoma” (LIE-oh-my-OH-muh) is the medical word for “fibroid.” Fi-broids are noncancerous growths of the uterine muscle. The uterus basically is a muscu-lar sack with a lining designed to nourish a fetus.

The cause of fibroids hasn’t been determined. They’re extremely common. By age 35, 40 percent to 50 percent of women have one

or more. By age 50, 70 percent to 90 percent have at least one fibroid. For most of thesewomen, fibroids cause no trouble and can be ignored.

Large fibroids might cause pelvic pain, and they can press on adjacent structuressuch as the bladder. When that happens, a woman has a need to empty her bladderfrequently. Heavy menstrual bleeding is a sign of fibroids. They also can bring painfulmenstrual periods, and sometimes they make sexual relations uncomfortable. Infertilityis cited as a possible effect, but infertility due to fibroids is rare.

Transformation into cancer is possible, but not probable. If a fibroid grows rapidly, that’s a sign of cancer change and must be investigated. Most fibroids shrink with meno-pause.

Doctors can treat fibroids in a number of ways. One is removal of the uterus — hyster-ectomy. If a woman wants more children, sometimes removal of only the fibroid is pos-sible, and this can be managed in some cases with a scope and special instruments.Uterine artery embolization is a newer treatment in which a slender, soft tube (a catheter)is passed from a surface artery to the uterine artery. When it’s at the precise spot, thedoctor releases sand-size synthetic particles that clog the artery and cut off the fibroid’sblood supply. It withers and is shed.

The booklet on fibroids describes them in detail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue— No. 1106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order(no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Pleaseallow four weeks for delivery.

Of all of the fruits you like to eat, strawber-ries are your favorite. You love the deliciously

sweet red berries, alone and in desserts. Youpurchase them often, but you wish you had ac-cess to a more constant supply. Why not growyour own?

Strawberries come in three types: June orspring bearing, everbearing and day neutral.

June bearing pro-vides strawberriesfor two to threeweeks in the spring.Everbearing pro-vides strawberries inthe spring, summerand fall. Day neutralprovides strawber-ries throughout thegrowing season. Thelatter works well forgardens limited inspace.

Each type ofstrawberry has sev-eral varieties. Youshould select thetype and variety thatwill work best foryour area and gardensite. For the best re-sults, the site should

have deep, sandy loam soil high in organic mat-ter, good drainage and full sun. It should also bewell away from grass sod areas that have recentlybeen plowed and from areas where eggplants, peppers, potatoes and tomatoes have been grownin the past four years. The former may havewhite grubs, which like to feed on strawberries, while the latter may carry a fungus, which candestroy strawberries.

To prepare the soil, you should test it first.Ideally, the pH should be between 5.8 and 6.2.You should fertilize the soil before planting andsoak it to get the fertilizer into the root zone.Once you have planted the strawberries, you willneed to water them an inch a week and removeall weeds.

For maximum growth, it is important youplant the strawberries as soon as the soil is dryenough. Dig some holes large enough to spreadout the roots and place the plants inside. Youdon’t want to plant them too deep or too shal-low. The soil should cover the tops of the rootsbut not the crown. You may use a variety ofplanting systems. The most common are:

• Matted row. In this system, the strawberriesare planted 18 to 30 inches apart in rows threeto four feet apart. The daughter plants are al-lowed to root freely, creating a matted row 24inches wide. The system works best for June-bearing strawberries.

• Hill. In this system, the runners are removed, leaving the mother plants. The mother plants arethen placed in multiple rows of groups of two, three or four with a two-foot walkway betweenthem. The system works well for everbearing orday-neutral strawberries.

• Spaced row. In this system, the mother plantsare placed 18 to 30 inches apart in rows three tofour feet apart. The daughter plants are placed

to root no closer than four inches apart. The sys-tem results in higher yields, larger strawberriesand less disease.

For the first season, you will need to removethe flowers from the strawberries. This will im-prove the development of the roots and runnersand allow for a larger crop the next season. Youshould remove the flowers from June-bearingstrawberries as soon as they appear and the flow-ers from everbearing and day-neutral strawber-ries through the month of June. You should thenleave the flowers alone to enable them to setfruit for the summer or fall harvest.

To ensure a good harvest, strawberries mustbe renovated. Typically, this involves mowingdown the old foliage, cutting the leaves an inchabove the crown, and cleaning and fertilizingthe site. The rows are narrowed, the plants arethinned and the site is watered an inch a week.

Growing strawberries is involved. Read up onit and talk to an experienced gardener. The moreknowledge you have, the better yield you willhave.

Q: We have some very old hand saws that we would liketo find out more about. — Clyde, Montevideo, Minn.

A: There are several pages devoted to hand saws in theAntique Trader Tools Price Guide edited by Kyle Husfloen(Krause, $19.99). A cast steel saw with applewood handlemade by Dusston lists for $150. On the other hand, one

Hand Saws

with a fancy hardwood handle featuring the likeness of apanther and manufactured by Woodrough & McPharlin isvalued at 10 times that amount. The value of any collect-ible, whether it is a hand saw or a doll, depends on severalfactors, including condition, rarity and desirability. At re-cent farm auctions I’ve attended, most of the older worksaws have sold in the $25 to $75 range.
