All things considered, this could be the year KevinHarvick has been awaiting.
Harvick, 34, replaced Dale Earnhardt at RichardChildress Racing after Earnhardt’s death in theDaytona 500 in 2001.He won his first (now)
Sprint Cup race in his third try. He has won the Nationwide Se-ries championship twice. He was Raybestos Rookie of the Yearin both Nationwide and Cup.
But Harvick hasn’t actually won at the Sprint Cup level sincethe 2007 Daytona 500.
“It’s been a decent start to the year, for sure,” he said. “Obvi-ously, we’ve had a couple of chances to win and haven’t quitegotten that done, but the guys are doing a great job.”
Decent start, huh?Harvick led the Cup point
standings for four straight races, though he fell to fourth after asubpar showing at Martinsville. He and wife DeLana run KevinHarvick Inc., which is near thehead of the class in the CampingWorld Truck and Nationwide se-ries. Ron Hornaday drove one ofthe Kevin Harvick Inc. entries tothe Truck championship last year.
Everything seems to be com-ing up roses for the Bakersfield,Calif., native, who manages tohave fun in spite of business ob-ligations.
“I think having fun — and run-ning well — is something that eases your mind on everythingelse,” said Harvick, “and there is just no pressure when you areracing in Nationwide or the Truck series. You can go and reallypush the limits, and find those limits, and do things you nor-mally wouldn’t do just because there’s really nothing at stake.
“It’s fun. It eases my mind. It lets me relax. Some peoplewould rather relax by not doing anything. For me, I’m at thetrack. I would rather be in a vehicle on the race track because Ifeel like there is always something you can learn. It’s just a mat-ter of approach as to how you relax, and that’s how I like torelax.”
What isn’t relaxing is chasing Jimmie Johnson.

Year of Harvick?
After leading in the Cup points standings
for four straight races earlier this season,
Kevin Harvick is looking to take over in
NASCAR’s biggest series. (John Clark/
NASCAR This Week photo)
“It just motivates you to keep working on your stuff and keep trying to make it better,”said Harvick. “They (Johnson’s team) haven’t won three out of the first six races by beinglucky, though. They win them because they have all their stuff together and when they geta lucky break, they capitalize on it and make things happen.”

Should Dogs Roam School Playground?DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I walk early every morning around my neighborhood, and
almost every time I walk past the elementary school, I see people letting their dogs runaround the grassy part of the playground. This is right around sunrise, before schoolopens. I don’t think this should be allowed. What if a dog leaves a nasty “surprise” for thekids? Who should I call to report this? — Concerned in New England
DEAR CONCERNED: While you raise a good point about dogs possibly leavingwaste behind after romping around the playground, there doesn’t appear to be any otherharm done from your description of what’s going on.
Before calling to report these dastardly evildoers, be sure to check municipal, county orschool board regulations about pets. There probably are regulations about when and wherepets can’t go — like inside the school or on the grounds during school hours — but theremay not be any rule stopping pet owners from letting their dogs romp on the grass at 6 a.m.
I’m somewhat ambivalent about telling you how to stop a dog owner from letting hisdog play in a controlled area. It’s become very difficult for urban and suburban owners tofind open, unregulated places for their pets to play. But it’s certainly your right to voiceyour concerns, to the city or the school board.
For pet owners faced with a dearth of open spaces, it’s more important now than ever tomake a good impression on neighbors, many of whom aren’t thrilled about off-leash any-thing — even designated dog parks. Socialize your dog to humans and other dogs from ayoung age, make sure your pet responds promptly to basic commands, pick up its messfrom sidewalks and grounds right away, and be considerate to others.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’ve had severe highblood pressure for many years. I have tried all themedicines you can think of. I am 62 and have hadone ministroke. I’m not looking for another. I usedto weigh 235 pounds. I lost 100 pounds. I watch mysalt. I have tried everything. My family has a historyof high blood pressure. Can you recommend any-thing? — F.
ANSWER: Blood pressure that doesn’t drop bymaking life changes (weight loss and diet) or by tak-ing three or four blood pressure medicines is calledresistant high blood pressure (hypertension). Yourweight loss is admirable. It should have reduced yourpressure.
Watching your salt intake is also important. Thatentails more than not using the salt shaker. It requiresyou to carefully look for the salt content (listed assodium or sodium chloride) of all your foods. Com-mercial soups, frozen dinners, many canned goodsand luncheon meats often have a high salt content.Your diet should be one of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains (unrefined wheat, barley, rye and oats) andone where meat and fats are eaten sparingly.
Increase foods with lots of potassium in them:tomatoes, potatoes, prunes, lima beans, kidney beans, navy beans, bananas, oranges and orange juice, spin-ach, peaches, cantaloupe and broccoli. Potassiumlowers blood pressure.
Exercise for 30 minutes every day. Get yourdoctor’s approval first, and start out modestly. Briskwalking is fine.
For resistant high blood pressure, your doctor hasto look for the less-common causes of it. Sleep ap-nea (loud snoring with pauses when there is nobreathing), adrenal gland tumors, Cushing’s syn-drome, narrowed kidney arteries and rare tumors suchas pheochromocytoma are cases in point.
Go over your medicines. Some medicines raisepressure. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs arean example — Aleve, Advil, Motrin, aspirin and otherNSAIDs. Don’t drink more than two alcohol drinksa day.
More than 30 blood pressure medicines are on themarket. I bet you haven’t tried all 30 or combina-

tions of them. Some brands come with two medicinesin one pill, easing the burden of pill-taking. A newmedicine, one completely different from all othermedicines, is now available. It is Tekturna. Somethingmust be done for your pressure.
The booklet on high blood pressure gives the storyof this very common malady. To receive a copy, write:Dr. Donohue — No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash)for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printedname and address. Allow four weeks for delivery.
• • •DEAR DR.
DONOHUE: When Iwalk upstairs, myknees make noises. They sound like bowlsof Rice Krispies, snap-ping, crackling andpopping. My wifethinks this has to be asign of serioustrouble. I have nopain. My knees are notstiff. I play 18 holes ofgolf three times aweek. Should I make abig deal of this? —R.K.
ANSWER: If yourknees are not bother-ing you, then kneenoises usually do notindicate any seriousproblems. Tendonsgliding over bonesmake snapping noises. So do bursting airbubbles in joint fluid.
No, you don’t needto make a big deal ofthis.
