Tic Tac Toe Assignment: “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto
Directions: Choose any three activities horizontally or vertically to complete. You must select three in a row. You must complete the
activity in the center block relating to theme.
Although Victor is the protagonist in “Seventh
Grade,” other characters’ thoughts and feelings
impact the story in significant ways. Analyze
how the author develops and contrasts the points
of view of the different characters, citing textual
evidence to support your analysis.
Create a plot diagram, and trace
Victor’s actions at each stage of the
plot.
Write a short story using all of your
vocabulary terms correctly (page 15).
Underline/ highlight the terms in your
story.
Imagine that many years after this story takes
place, Victor is invited to speak to his son’s
seventh-grade class. He is asked to focus on the
importance of seventh grade and to give advice
about how to make it a successful year. Write the
speech that the adult Victor might give as he
looks back over his experience. Identify the
central idea that you want to communicate and to
develop it with specific details. Humor is
appropriate, as are short anecdotes relating to
Victor’s own experiences in seventh grade.
Your speech must be neat (final copy) and error
free.
Complete a theme graphic
organizer using complete
sentences. You need to really
analyze what the theme is.
Choose two vocabulary words (page
15), and create 2 poems using the
following format:
Line 1- 5 syllables
Line 2- 7 syllables
Line 3- 5 syllables
***Your vocabulary word should be
the title for each poem.
Sometimes people go through great lengths to
impress those that are important to them In
“Seventh Grade,” Victor acts in a variety of ways
to impress Teresa. Interpret Victor’s motives and
actions throughout the story. Do you believe that
Victor was successful at achieving his goals?
Justify your response with at least three pieces of
textual evidence from the selection.
Identify one central idea in the
selection, and create a comic strip
sequencing the development of the
idea. Make sure that your comic
strip includes at least six panels. It
needs to have well done drawings
and words/ dialogue.
Take on the role of Teresa. Write a
letter to a friend who moved away
before the school year started.
Describe Victor’s behavior and your
reactions to it. Use specific details to
show Teresa’s thoughts and feelings.
