MISS TEMPLE CITY AIMS TO GET BACK ON FORM AT KY DOWNSBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

She was already a multiple grade 1 winner and an Eclipse

Award finalist. She defeated male rivals twice at the top level. Yet this season, her 5-year-old cam-paign, was supposed to be the one where the best version of Miss Temple City materialized.

That was the whole idea when initial plans for the dark bay mare were mapped out in the early stages of 2017, but as often happens in Thoroughbred racing, the best-laid concepts ended up clashing with reality. From the delayed start to her season to a couple disappointing ventures, nothing has gone according to script for the daughter of Temple City during the last several months.

"We just had kind of a screwed-up schedule this year, and we're just trying to get her back on track," said trainer Graham Motion.

If Miss Temple City is anything close to her old self, the first move toward righting the ship could come Sept. 9, when she will become the most accomplished horse to ever grace the unique venue at Kentucky Downs. The earner of more than $1.4 million towers in back class over the seven rivals she is set to face in the $350,000 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3T) going one mile.

The end goal of having Miss Temple City right for a run in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) at Del Mar Nov. 4 hasn't shifted, but her path there has been ripe with frustration so far. She initially put herself behind the eight ball when she had to miss a planned start at Keeneland after she got loose one morning at Palm Meadows Training Center and returned with some filling in a leg. She was then scratched out of both the May 6 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Presented by Longines (G2T) and the May 13 Beaugay Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park due to soft turf, and attempted to capture the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot in June without a start since her win in the Matriarch Stakes (G1T) at Del Mar Dec. 4.

Her freshness worked against her that day, as Miss Temple City

was too close to the early pace in the Queen Anne before she faded to 13th. When she returned in a softer spot in the WinStar Matchmaker Stakes (G3T) at Monmouth Park July 30, the 1 1/8-mile distance and some salty competition in the form of race winner Wekeela proved too much that day, and Miss Temple City finished third.

"We're looking for a victory. We're trying to find a spot to win," said co-owner Bob Feld, who also bred Miss Temple City. "We know she's a grade 1 horse and we know she can beat the best of the best. But the way she got started. ... Saturday is obviously an important race to see where we stand with her.

"The way she got started—or didn't start really—and then going against the Europeans at Ascot,

I don't know how much she got out of the race, because she didn't finish up real well. Then we were trying to find an easy spot at Monmouth, but she probably wasn't cranked up to go 1 1/8 miles off a comeback race like that. We're just trying to get her back on track—get a win into her. It's the third race off a layoff. We're looking for a big race out of her."

While Feld hasn't given up on the notion that Miss Temple City can handle the 1 1/8-mile distance, the eight furlongs of Saturday's test is clearly where she fits best.

Prior to annexing the Matriarch last winter, Miss Temple City became the first female runner to win both the Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (G1T) and Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) at Keeneland. A return to Keeneland for either the Shadwell or the First Lady Stakes (G1T) is the goal should all go as expected this weekend. If that domino falls into place, the notion of having Miss Temple City peaking for Breeders' Cup weekend would suddenly be back in focus.

"I'm still confident," said Feld, who owns Miss Temple City along with Sagamore Farm and Needle In a Haystack. "It remains to be seen, obviously, but I think she has had a couple solid excuses for not winning so far this year. Now we're in a position where she has to earn her way to the Breeders' Cup. ... But if all goes to plan, we hopefully win Saturday and she goes to Keeneland and wins like she has in the past, and then we're right back where we thought we would be early in the season."

Fellow entrants Zipessa and Linda are each graded stakes winners who, like Miss Temple City, are trying to rediscover their best days. Zipessa took the Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes (G3T) in July of 2016 but has dropped seven straight since, including a ninth-place run in the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T) Aug. 12.

Linda, trained by Ian Wilkes, bested a field that included grade 1 winner Harmonize and future multiple graded winner Hawksmoor in the Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2T) at Churchill Downs Nov. 25, but has lost her last four. She finished second last time out behind Ladies Turf Stakes entrant Beauly in the Indiana General Assembly Distaff Stakes July 15. BH

GULFSTREAM CANCELS LIVE RACING AS HURRICANE IRMA LOOMSBy BloodHorse Staff

Gulfstream Park has cancelled live racing Sept. 7-Sept. 10 because of the unexpected path of Hur-

ricane Irma, which the National Hurricane Center is calling "an extremely dangerous" Category 5 storm.

With winds in excess of 180 miles per hour, Hurricane Irma is likely to impact South Florida as early as this weekend. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a statewide emergency, and on the evening of Sept. 5, President Donald Trump declared emergencies in Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico because of Irma. Local officials placed the Florida Keys under mandatory evacuation orders Sept. 6, and Miami-Dade county could end up issuing similar orders.

Gulfstream Park is located in Hallandale Beach, Fla., in Broward County, about 18 miles north of Miami.

Gulfstream will be open this Thursday and Friday for simulcast wagering, and officials will monitor the storm throughout the weekend. Racing is tentatively scheduled

to resume Sept. 13, which was a scheduled makeup day.Gulfstream's casino will be open through Friday

evening."Obviously, our first priority is the safety of our

patrons and our equine athletes," said P.J. Campo, general manager of Gulfstream Park and vice president of racing for The Stronach Group. "Horsemen are being given the option to keep their horses at Gulfstream, Gulfstream Park West, or move to our training facility at Palm Meadows in Palm Beach." BH

POSTULATION BRINGS WIN STREAK INTO KENTUCKY TURF CUPBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Postulation will try for a third straight stakes win

when he starts from the rail in the $600,000 Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes (G3T) Sept. 9 at Kentucky Downs.

Runnymede Racing's gelded son of Harlan's Holiday finished off the board in his first two races this year but found his best stride when stretched out to 1 1/2 miles for just the second time in his career—scoring a six-length victory in the Cape Henlopen Stakes July 8 at Delaware Park.

Off that front-running score, trainer Edward Graham entered Postulation in the 1 11/16-mile American St. Leger Stakes (G3T) Aug. 12 at Arlington International Race Course. Distance again proved to be no problem, as the 5-year-old runner cruised to a 2 1/4-length victory.

Jockey Jorge A. Vargas Jr. secured his first graded stakes win in the American St. Leger and will make the trip to Kentucky Downs Saturday. The inside post could be favorable, as Vargas and Postulation hugged the rail in their American St. Leger score.

After skipping away from seven challengers at Arlington, Postulation will have to hold off an expected 13 rivals Saturday, including four horses trained by Mike Maker. After winning the past two editions of the Kentucky Turf Cup with Da Big Hoss, Maker this year will send out Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Oscar Nominated, Maxis Stable's Enterprising, Three Diamonds Farm's St. Louie, and Michael Hui's Taghleeb.

Enterprising enters off a close fourth-place finish in the Arlington Million XXXV Stakes (G1T) Aug. 12. Earlier in the year he captured the Muniz Memorial Handicap (G2T) and the Fair Grounds Handicap

(G3T), both at the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots turf to start the season. The 6-year-old Elusive Quality gelding will try 1 1/2 miles for the first time Saturday, looking to add to his seven career stakes wins.

Oscar Nominated finished eighth in the Arlington Million but did register a grade 1 placing in the spring when third behind Divisidero and Beach Patrol in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1T) at Churchill Downs. The grade 3-winning son of Kitten's Joy also boasts a stakes win over the unique undulating Kentucky Downs turf, as he scored a 6 1/2-length victory in last year's Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Derby.

St. Louie, a 5-year-old son of Arch, will make his graded stakes debut after finishing third in the restricted John's Call Stakes Aug. 23 on the Saratoga Race Course turf; while Taghleeb, a 6-year-old son of Hard Spun, enters off a runner-up finish to Postulation in the American St. Leger.

The field also includes Shadwell Stable's Muqtaser, who will make his stakes debut off a pair of allowance level wins on the inner turf at Saratoga; Calumet Farm's Zulu Alpha, who enters off a maiden and allowance win at Indiana Grand; and Preston Stables and Prestonwood Racing's One Go All Go, winner of the 2015 Commonwealth Derby (G2T) at Laurel Park. KENTUCKY DOWNS SPRINTS OFFER FAST CASHBy Evan Hammondst @BH_EHammonds

Talk about fast cash: Kentucky Downs' Sept. 9 program includes the $400,000 Kentucky Downs

Turf Sprint (G3T) and $350,000 Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint Stakes. Both are run at the specialty distance of 6 1/2 furlongs around one sweeping turn over the unique course near Franklin, Ky.

As in any turf event, experience over the layout can be a key factor.

The big names in the Turf Sprint include Wes Welker and Elizabeth Kumin's group 1 winner Undrafted, the 7-year-old gelding trained by Wesley Ward. A seven-time winner of 31 starts, Undrafted advanced from mid-pack along the rail to finish a close-up fourth in this race last year and has kept top company since.

Hogy was beaten a neck in the race a year ago and has held sharp form throughout 2017, including a score in the Colonel Power Stakes going about 5 1/2 furlongs at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in February. In his last outing, Aug. 3 at Saratoga Race Course, the graded stakes winner was claimed by Michael Hui and trainer Mike Maker from William Stiritz and trainer Larry Rivelli for $80,000. Florent Geroux has the mount.

The Sprint also features Mary Schnelly's World Thoroughbreds Racing's Tell All You Know, a speedburner who will depart post 4. With Katie Clawson up, the 8-year-old was three lengths clear at Indiana Grand June 21 going five furlongs.

Whitham Thoroughbreds' Bondurant holds a class edge, but has been running at a mile or longer in all six starts this season. He's faced top runners such as Heart to Heart, Chocolate Ride, Kasaqui, and Disco Partner in stakes in Kentucky and New York.

The Ladies features several runners with back class at Kentucky Downs.

Jackpot Ranch and Mike Rutherford's Mississippi Delta earned $205,680 winning last year's event as the 3-2 favorite. The 5-year-old Giant's Causeway mare has drawn the rail here and has won twice in 2017, including a score in Belmont Park's Intercontinental Stakes (G3T) at seven panels.

Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's Lull, a 3-year-old War Front filly, won last year's Exacta Systems Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Kentucky Downs under Brian Hernandez Jr. and returns to Kentucky off a second-place effort at Del Mar in the San Clemente Handicap (G2T) in late July. She'll break from post 5. To her immediate outside is G. Watts Humphrey Jr.'s Morticia, a Twirling Candy filly who topped Lull by a nose in Belmont's seven-furlong Soaring Softly Stakes May 20.

Robert Lothenbach's Scatter Gun is two-for-two at Kentucky Downs, winning at this distance last year in an entry-level allowance. BH

APPLICATOR UPSETS TOURIST MILE AT KENTUCKY DOWNSBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

It was a long time between stakes wins for Olympia Star's Applicator, but the 4-year-old Henrythenav-

igator gelding fired his best shot Sept. 6 to defeat a quality field in the $400,000 Tourist Mile Stakes at Kentucky Downs.

Off at 13-1 in the eight-horse field, the gelding trained and bred by Mikhail Yanakov stalked the early pace under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., pulled alongside leader Western Reserve in the wide Kentucky Downs turn, and dueled that rival to the wire in the long stretch run.

Applicator began to move away from Western Reserve in the final furlong, then held off a late closing bid from Flatlined (one of four graded winners in the field) to win by a length in a final time of 1:44.79 on turf rated good.

"He gathered himself up at the head of the lane and he was strong through the lane," Valdivia said of Applicator's first victory since the Gleaming Stakes at Gulfstream Park in May of 2016. "I didn't know if it was going to be enough, because the ground is very forgiving, but he had enough left. And I liked the fact

that, when he made the lead, he threw his ears up, so I knew I had some animal underneath me."

Western Reserve set a contested pace under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan while pressured early on by 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) winner Hootenanny and grade 1-placed Shining Copper to run fractions of :26.02 and :50.62 through a half-mile. Applicator moved a half-length in front through six furlongs in 1:16.94, but Western Reserve battled back to cut the deficit to a head with a furlong to run before he tired to finish fifth, a nose behind favored Red Bank Stakes (G3T) winner Irish Straight.

A race later Snapper Sinclair impressively stalked and pounced under jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. to take the Fasig-Tipton Turf Showcase Juvenile Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths over John Tippmann. After the race, trainer Steve Asmussen said he will seek a longer test than the seven-furlong race at Kentucky Downs, to see if Bloom Racing Stable's City Zip colt might be a fit for a run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T).

After an underwhelming sixth-place debut effort on the dirt at Belmont Park in July, Asmussen put Snapper Sinclair on the grass second time out and he impressively won a maiden special weight sprint at Saratoga Race Course by four lengths.

Other stakes winners on the opening-day card at Kentucky Downs were Stuart Janney III's 4-year-old

My Impression, who won the $150,000 One Dreamer Stakes.

My Impression, a grade 3-winning Sky Mesa filly trained by Shug McGaughey, took the $150,000 One Dreamer Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths going one mile and 70 yards under jockey Tyler Gaffalione.

For the People's Ultima D, trained by Wesley Ward and ridden by Julio Garcia, took the $350,000 Exacta Systems Juvenile Fillies Stakes by the same margin. The daughter of Scat Daddy led at every call of the seven-furlong distance to earn her first win. BH

MR. MISUNDERSTOOD SET FOR SUPER DERBY CHALLENGEBy BloodHorse Staff

Flurry Racing Stable's Mr. Misunderstood will face several ship-in rivals, including Gorgeous Kitten and

Sonneteer, as six line up Sept. 9 for the $200,000 Super Derby at Harrah's Louisiana Downs.

Moved to turf for the 2017 edition, the Super Derby is for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.

Mr. Misunderstood won the Aug. 5 Super Derby Prelude Stakes to earn a berth into the Super Derby, and is undefeated in each of his four turf starts. The gelded son of Archarcharch is trained by Brad Cox and will break from post 4 under jockey Chris Rosier at morning-line odds of 9-5.

"We were hoping to draw either the 4 or 5 hole, so it worked out well," said owner Staton Flurry. "It's an interesting race for sure, but Brad and I have confidence in our horse on the turf. Hopefully he will run as well on Saturday as he did in the Prelude."

Flurry and Rosier are close friends, so even though Rosier departed Louisiana to ride at Remington Park, he will be back aboard the dark brown gelding Saturday afternoon.

Trainer Mike Maker will ship Ken and Sarah Ramsey's homebred Gorgeous Kitten. The Kitten's Joy colt will make his seventh turf start and enters the race off three recent graded stakes appearances at Arlington International Racecourse. He finished second in both the Arlington Classic Stakes (G3T) and American Derby (G3T) before he stepped up to the Secretariat Stakes (G1T) Aug. 12. Gorgeous Kitten came in fifth to Oscar Performance in the Secretariat and will make his Louisiana Downs debut in the Super Derby. Maker and the Ramseys won the 2014 edition of the Super Derby with Vicar's in Trouble, when it was 1 1/8-mile graded event on the main track.

Another strong contender set to make his Louisiana Downs debut is Sonneteer. Bred and owned by Calumet Farm, the son of Midnight Lute has faced tough company in California and had a solid meet at Oaklawn Park, which was capped by a fourth-place finish in the April 15 Arkansas Derby (G1) He finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) before he returned to California. Trained by Keith Desormeaux, Sonneteer broke his maiden in his turf debut July 23 at Del Mar, where he closed from off the pace to score by a nose.

Veteran Louisiana-based rider Gerard Melancon has the call on Sonneteer, the highest earner in the field with $323,685 bankrolled to date.

Brad Grady's Phat Man will ship in for trainer Joe Sharp off a workout at Churchill Downs in search of his first victory on the turf. By Munnings, Phat Man will return to action following a sixth-place finish in the West Virginia Derby (G3) last month. Jockey Roberto Morales will have the call for the first time.

"His dam (Nicole's Dream) is a (multiple stakes) winner on the grass," Sharp said. "We ran him in the Texas Heritage Stakes on the turf at Sam Houston earlier this year and he never picked up his feet, but we wanted to give him another chance. Of course, I wouldn't be upset if it rained and it came off the turf."

Fast Talkin Man, a Texas-bred son of Oratory trained by Danny Pish, ran second behind Mr. Misunderstood in the Prelude under rider Luis Quinonez. He broke from the rail in the Prelude and drew the inside post again for the Super Derby. Pish was pleased with his effort Aug. 5, but is hoping for a different pace scenario Saturday, one that will set up well for the closing kick of Fast Talkin Man.

"This horse is a deep closer and the fractions did not set him up in the Prelude," Pish said. "He always comes home like a monster." BH

AIMING HIGH FOR THE EVEREST AS FIELD DEVELOPSBy Alastair Bull

Racing New South Wales doesn't want The Everest to stop at AUS$10 million (US$8 million).

Excitement is building for the inaugural running of The Everest, a 1,200-meter (about six furlongs) sprint based on the Pegasus World Cup invitational Stakes (G1) slot-holder concept. Held Oct. 14 at Royal Randwick in Sydney, it will be the richest turf race in the world.

And as the Pegasus World Cup is set to rise from US$12 million to US$16 million for its second running, the hopes are high for The Everest.

"What we're doing is that we're putting all the money that we're generating from the event back into the event," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys told BloodHorse Daily. "So hopefully we'll get a AUS$20 million event within five years."

Racing NSW guaranteed the race's short-term future by insisting slot holders pay AUS$1.8 million for their slots for three years.

V'landys said the publicity around which horse the slot holders choose has proved better than expected.

It helped that the first horse confirmed was Longines Golden Slipper (G1) winner She Will Reign, whose 20 mostly first-time owners did a deal with Chinese businessman Zhang Yuesheng of Yulong Investments.

"They're tradesmen and laborers, etc., and he's a billionaire that's in it for 50% of the prize money," V'landys said. "That's the sort of story that I knew it would create."

Other definite starters are another 3-year-old filly in Houtzen, the outstanding veteran Chautauqua, and two horses he beat when winning his third Darley T J Smith Stakes (G1) in April, English and Fell Swoop.

Star Entertainment will have a runner from David Hayes' Lindsay Park stable, probably Vega Magic or Redkirk Warrior, while the Australian Turf Club has narrowed its contenders to five, with Redzel favored to take its slot.

The other five slot holders haven't announced their runners, including Coolmore, which initially considered bringing Caravaggio from Ireland until he suffered two summer defeats. Despite this, it should be a competitive race where most runners give their slot holders a chance.

The Everest will headline a vastly upgraded Oct. 14 raceday that now includes the AUS$500,000 Lightning Stakes—which will include four horses that will double as also-eligibles for The Everest—and the AUS$500,000 Craven Stakes (2,000 meters), which V'landys hopes will attract Winx.

This competes directly with the well-established Caulfield Guineas day in Melbourne, which includes

four group 1 races, but V'Landys isn't interested in criticism about the clash, saying Oct. 14 is a date that doesn't have to worry about competition from other major Australian sports.

"It's like saying to a florist 'you can't open on Valentine's Day'," he said. "This is the best period to race, and nobody should be afraid of competition." BH

Bewitch (rail) defeats stablemates Citation (center) and Free America in the 1947 Washington Futurity

A CALUMET FARM TRIFECTA IN THE WASHINGTON PARK FUTURITYBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

No longer a graded race, the Arlington-Washington Futurity, which is one of the features on the Sept.

9 card at Arlington International Race Course, has been a training ground for juveniles that have gone on to en-grave their names in the annals of racing history.

Rex C. Ellsworth's Candy Spots captured the inaugural event in 1962. He returned as a sophomore to land not only the historic American Derby but the Arlington Classic, after securing the 1963 Preakness Stakes.

While there have been only 53 previous runnings of the Arlington-Washington Futurity, the hyphen is significant. Those well-versed in grammar know that hyphens are joiners, and in this case indicate that the race is an amalgam of two older races: Arlington Park's American National Futurity, first run in 1927, and Washington Park's Futurity (1937).

The 1947 edition of the Washington Park Futurity ranks as one of the most memorable. Two horses, one colt and one filly, both unbeaten and both destined to be champions, faced each other for the first time since their early days at Calumet Farm.

By the time Calumet's Bull Lea colt Citation made his winning debut April 22, 1947 at Havre de Grace in Maryland, Calumet's Bull Lea filly Bewitch had already taken a pair of races at Keeneland.

As Calumet owner Warren Wright Sr. was a native Chicagoan, racing at Illinois tracks was an inherent part of his horses' regimen, so the two juveniles made their way to the Windy City where Bewitch parlayed her victory in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs into

subsequent stakes success. While she wasted no time in taking the Hyde Park Stakes, Pollyanna Stakes, and Arlington Lassie Stakes at Arlington along with the Princess Pat Stakes at Washington Park, Citation added an allowance win at Arlington and his first stakes score, the Elementary Stakes, at Washington Park.

The best colt and filly in the Calumet barn were on a Midwest collision course. The battle ground was the Washington Park Futurity on a bright mid-August afternoon before some 27,000 fans.

Eight other juveniles, including Calumet's stakes-winning colt Free America, joined the 1-5 favorites for the six-furlong tussle. Carrying 119, one pound more than her Calumet counterparts, Bewitch and her regular rider Douglas Dodson took the lead as soon as the gates sprung and quickly had four lengths on the rest, with Citation mid-pack and Free America last early. Citation challenged in the stretch but never phased the leader, who stopped the timer in 1:10 2/5 on the fast track, defeating Citation by a length. Free America closed to finish third, giving the devil's red and blue Calumet silks a 1-2-3 finish.

The once-beaten Citation ran the juvenile table for the remainder of the year and exacted his revenge on Bewitch in the Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park, in which Bewitch finished third, beaten three lengths but once again carrying one more pound than the winner.

The only other blemish on Bewitch's juvenile record came through a disqualification in the Matron Stakes at Belmont. Although she finished first by a neck, the stewards placed her last for boring in repeatedly.

Nonetheless, for the powerful Calumet stable, Bewitch earned 1947 championship honors in her division as did Citation in his. Alongside these two championships were the older male and Horse of the Year honors that went to Calumet's Armed, also by Calumet's resident stallion Bull Lea. BH
