OBS SPRING 2-YEAR-OLDS IN TRAINING

OBS SETS RECORD AS LOWS BUY SESSION-TOPPERBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Owners Robert and Lawana Low, who campaign undefeated Kentucky Derby Presented by Wood-

ford Reserve (G1) contender Magnum Moon, spent $750,000 on their next two-turn hopeful April 25 and topped the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales April 2-year-olds in training sale.

Jacob West, the Lows' racing manager and bloodstock agent, signed the ticket on a gray or roan colt by Tapit out of Flaming Heart, the dam of graded stakes winners Commissioner and Laugh Track.

"Tapit needs no introduction. He is a three-quarters brother to a horse that just missed an American classic in Commissioner. And there is a big update in the family, as he's a half brother to the dam of Vino Rosso,"

West said, referring to the Wood Memorial Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (G2) winner. "It is a real stallion's pedigree with Tapit out of a Touch Gold mare. He can run all day. We are looking for two-turn classic horses, and that is what he was to us. We have had a lot of luck with May foals that have gone two turns, like Magnum Moon. It has worked out well for us."

WinStar Farm, where Commissioner stands, and Winchell Thoroughbreds co-bred the Tapit colt. They sent the colt to consignor Niall Brennan after he missed the yearling sale cycle.

"He is a horse that hasn't been rushed along, he was a May foal, but he's come here handily and breezed nicely," said Brennan of the colt's :10 2/5 work during the under tack show. "He is just a horse with a big future. I'm happy he sold that well, but he deserved to sell that well."

The colt will be sent to trainer Todd Pletcher, who also is the conditioner for Magnum Moon.

Regarding the Derby contender, West said he and the Lows have been counting their blessings every day since they bought the son of Malibu Moon for $380,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale from Claiborne Farm. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Ramona Bass.

"He's an incredible horse. He has done everything we have asked him to do and never batted an eye or turn a hair the wrong way," West said. "He'll work Friday tentative to the weather. We'll see how he comes out of that. We would not trade places with anyone."

OBS SPRING 2-YEAR-OLDS IN TRAINING

Regarding Magnum Moon's chances against a deep Derby field, West said: "You can't knock an undefeated horse, especially a two-time graded stakes winner. The horse has never given a reason to not be confident. Going into the Rebel (Stakes, G2) and the Arkansas Derby (G1), we always felt he'd show up, and he did. Hopefully, he shows up on the First Saturday in May."

As for the rest of the second session, the OBS April sale continued the momentum it enjoyed on day one and set a Spring session record of $18,932,500 in gross sales from 180 sold. The comparable session of 2017 sold 167 for a gross of $14,111,500. The average price was $105,181, up 24.5% compared to $84,500 in 2017, while the median price was $56,000, a 40% rise compared with $40,000 a year ago. The buy-back rate was 22.4% compared to 20.8% for the second session last year.

"We are on pace to exceed last year, and there is strength and depth in the market," said OBS president Tom Ventura. "The top 20 horses were bought by 18 different buyers. We have not had the magic $1 million horse, but there is plenty of competition at the top."

Besides the session-topper, two other horses sold for $700,000 each—Hip 403, a Speightstown half brother to grade 1 winner and champion Good Magic bought by Narvick International on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida and partners out of Brennan's consignment; and Hip 534, a filly by Malibu Moon out of the family of champion and sire Boston Harbor bought by Peter Fluor out of the de Meric Sales consignment.

Other top sellers were:• Hip 606, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned

by Paul Sharp, agent, was sold to B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm for $650,000. The bay filly whose eighth-mile work in :9 4/5 April 18 was the session's co-fastest at the distance, is out of Loveofalifetime, by Medaglia d'Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Savorthetime.

• Justin Casse, agent, went to $525,000 for Hip 474, a bay colt by Candy Ride consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, who worked a quarter in :21 flat April 18. He's out of High On the Hill, by Fusaichi Pegasus, a half sister to graded stakes winner Lil's Lad.

• Hip 592, a son of Tapit consigned by Brennan, was sold to Calumet Farm for $500,000. The gray or roan colt, who breezed a quarter April 18 in :21 flat, is out of Lindsay's Way, by Giant's Causeway, a half sister to grade 1 winner Startac.

The sale continues April 26-27 and begins at 10:30 a.m. EDT daily. BH

YOSHIDA BUYS GOOD MAGIC HALF BROTHER FOR $700,000By Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Living up to his billing, a Speightstown half brother to Good Magic, champion 2-year-old

male of 2017 and top contender for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), brought $700,000 during the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales April 2-year-olds in training sale April 25.

Narvick International's Emmanuel de Seroux signed for the colt on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida and partners. The colt will be sent to Japan, according to de Seroux.

As de Seroux signed the ticket, he brought himself full circle with the colt's family. Fourteen years ago, the bloodstock agent and adviser selected 81 mares for Stonestreet Stables founder Jess Jackson at the 2004 Keeneland November breeding stock sale to be the foundation broodmare band at a Kentucky farm Jackson had just acquired. Among those mares was Magical Flash, a daughter of Miswaki that had already produced three black-type winners when Jackson bought her for $140,000. The mare's pedigree would get another important update in 2006 when her daughter Take the Ribbon finished second in the Garden City Breeders' Cup Stakes (G1T) and in 2007 won the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G3T).

Magical Flash continued producing quality runners for Stonestreet, including black-type homebred Glinda the Good, who is the dam of Good Magic (by Curlin) and the Speightstown colt de Seroux bought at OBS out of Niall Brennan's consignment, named Wicked Wizard.

"Obviously, he has a fantastic pedigree, and he is by Speightstown, who has done very well in Japan so we have very high hopes for him," de Seroux said. "He has a stallion's pedigree, so if he wins a group for us, there is a lot of potential. We thought he was a good value."

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Wicked Wizard was purchased for $200,000 by Paul Roy at the 2017 Keeneland September yearling sale out of the Taylor Made Sales consignment. Roy intended to race the colt in England but changed plans after Good Magic won the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and was named champion. Good Magic secured a place in the Kentucky Derby field when he won the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2).

Wicked Wizard arrived at Brennan's training center between Christmas and New Year's Day to begin preparing for the April sale.

"It was the only sale he could make and have a chance. He was only just under tack," said Brennan prior to the horse getting sold. "He's made amazing progress to get here, considering all the travel back and forth, but he has knuckled down in his training and done very well. He's growing, he's improved, and he's gotten stronger."

"They changed their minds, but it was an opportunity for us," de Seroux said. BH

MALIBU MOON FILLY GOES TO PETER FLUOR FOR $700,000By Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

A striking dark bay daughter of Malibu Moon out of the family of champion and sire Boston Harbor

sold for the co-second-highest price during the sec-ond day of the Ocala Breeders' Sales April 2-year-olds in training sale April 25 when owner Peter Fluor of Speedway Stables acquired her for $700,000.

Bloodstock agent Marette Farrell, sitting with Fluor in the sales pavilion, signed the ticket for the filly offered by de Meric Sales as agent. Consignor Nick de Meric bought the filly for $170,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale.

"We thought she was the queen. We looked at a number of fillies, and she was the one that consistently came out and did the same thing every time, showed a lot of class," Farrell said. "She has a lot of depth, a great mover, a lot of presence, and she's got a lovely family."

The filly worked in a brisk :21 in the under tack show, but it wasn't the final time that sold Farrell on the filly's athleticism.

"The work is a huge priority, but I don't get caught up in the time," she said. "We have a team of three people (at the under tack show) because you can see much more than on the videos. You can see the movement on the video, but it's also about their energy, how hard they hit the ground, or how lightly they hit the ground. I have someone on the back side to watch the gallop out. It is the way they gallop out, how they use themselves around the turn, and their rhythm."

De Meric bought the filly at the Fasig-Tipton July sale from Carrie Brogden, Andrew Cary, and Jay Goodwin's Select Sales consignment. The filly was co-bred by Brogden's Machmer Hall with Haymarket Farm. The Select Sales team liked the filly enough to stay in as partners.

"My son Tristan and (his wife) Valerie had the filly in their division, and they did a beautiful job," said Nick de Meric. "These kind are a pleasure to work with

… for the first three months, you don't notice them because they don't do anything wrong, and then the last three months you notice them because they are doing everything right."

Fluor, the CEO of a private Texas oil and gas exploration company, races multi-millionaire and grade 1 winner Collected in his silks. While he bought the son of City Zip at the 2015 OBS March sale, he is shopping primarily for fillies at OBS this week.

"We are focusing on the fillies because of their residual value," Farrell said. "Peter always wants to make the smart decision and has really become a student of the game. He reads everything and asks great questions. It is like he's in some accelerated program, and he's the top student. We're lucky to have someone so passionate. We need more." BH

PROTEST OVER BARRETTS SALE HORSE DRAWS ATTENTION AT OBSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Nearly a dozen protesters with seven-foot-tall signs disparaging a consignor at the

ongoing Ocala Breeders' Sales April 2-year-olds in training sale greeted participants April 25 as they headed to the second session of the four-day auction.

According to the assembled protesters, California owner Anthony Fick organized the protest, which spread the length of the road in front of the OBS sale grounds, against Raul and Martha Reyes' King's Equine. Fick is accusing the consignors of selling him a lame horse at the Barretts spring 2-year-olds in training sale April 4.

Anthony and William Fick bought a colt named Silver Smuggler at the Barretts sale for $70,000. The colt is a son of Into Mischief out of the stakes-placed Tapit mare Puddy Tap. Several days after the sale, Fick tried to return the colt, according to the sale company and the consignor.

Raul Reyes said Fick was advised by a veterinarian and a trainer not to buy the horse, who reportedly had some issues of concern that were apparent in radiographs on file in Barretts' repository.

Repeated messages left with Fick requesting comment Wednesday went unanswered.

"They were advised not to buy the horse, but they bought it anyway," said Raul Reyes, whose version of the transaction was corroborated by Barretts. "Everything was transparent. I have been selling horses for 20 years, and we don't do anything but by the book. They can say what they want, but the trainer called me and said the horse was not lame. It's a bad deal. Someone has buyer's remorse."

Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts, said an attorney contacted the sale company about the horse

but stressed that a formal dispute was never pursued. Even if the sale was challenged, Lloyd said, the horse would not have been returned based on what he knows about the transaction.

"There were accurate radiographs in the repository. Everything was done according to the rules, and everything was transparent," Lloyd said. "It is the sale company's job to protect both buyers and sellers."

Reyes said his consignment has been especially successful the past couple of years, which he suspects makes him a target.

"I've had the best people in the business buy from me, and the last two years have been the best. Maybe this is part of having success," Reyes said.

King's Equine has sold 21 2-year-olds so far this year for a total of $2,866,000. During the first two sessions at the OBS sale, the consignment sold seven for $971,000. BH

HOFBURG TAKES FIRST SPIN AROUND CHURCHILL DOWNSBy BloodHorse Staff

Juddmonte Farms' Hofburg, runner-up in the Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) in his most recent

start, made his first visit to the track at Churchill Downs April 25 to begin his preparations for the Ken-tucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

Hofburg, who arrived in Louisville April 24 following a van ride from Payson Park in South Florida, galloped 1 1/4 miles over a "good" track under exercise rider Penny Gardiner during the 7:30-7:45 a.m. training window for Kentucky Derby and Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) horses.

"I got on him when he came to Gulfstream, when he broke his maiden and for the Florida Derby, so I had some familiarity with him," Gardiner said.

Trainer Bill Mott has planned Sunday as the day for Hofburg's final pre-Derby timed work. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount on Hofburg.

No Kentucky Derby works are scheduled for Thursday. However, Courtlandt Farms' My Miss Lilly is scheduled to breeze a half-mile in the morning in preparation for the Kentucky Oaks.

In other Kentucky Derby news:All four of trainer Todd Pletcher's Derby hopefuls

galloped 1 3/8 miles Wednesday. Amelia Green was on Audible, Nick Bush was on Magnum Moon, Carlos Cano was on Noble Indy, and Adele Bellinger was on

Vino Rosso.The Pletcher contingent is

scheduled to work April 27. No rider has been confirmed for Noble Indy. Pletcher's other riders are John Velazquez on Vino Rosso, Luis Saez on Magnum Moon, and Javier Castellano on Audible.

Trainer Steve Asmussen said Wednesday that Risen Star Stakes presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) runner-up Snapper Sinclair would be given some time off and has been removed from Derby contention. Also, Reride could be pointed to the Preakness Stakes (G1) and not the Derby. Both horses were outside the Top 20 on the leaderboard. BH

M & M RACING A NEW FORCE AT OAKLAWNBy Robert Yates

Michael Sisk is the face of a pioneering company that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of

low testosterone in men, having co-founded the wildly successful Low T Center chain of testosterone therapy clinics in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2009.

Less than a decade later, Sisk, 49, is getting a boost from another source—Thoroughbred racing. Sisk captured his first career owner's title during the 55-day Oaklawn Park meeting that concluded April 14, outpointing four-time defending champion Danny Caldwell 21-17.

"That's what he wanted," said Robertino Diodoro, Sisk's primary trainer. "He's a very high-strung guy, but he's a great owner. Good for the game. Lots of energy and lots of enthusiasm. Got lots of goals ahead of him."

The title at the Hot Springs, Ark., track came a little more than a year after M and M Racing (Michael and wife Mickala) started its first horse.

On the strength of 17 victories, including Mind Reader's score in the $100,000 Snack Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, M and M bankrolled $833,748 in purse earnings last year to rank 139th for owners with at least one North American start, according to Equibase.

M and M, racing primarily in Arkansas and New York, has already blown past both figures this year, with 28 victories and $951,439 in purse earnings, the latter ranking 16th nationally through Tuesday. M and M ranked second in purse earnings at Oaklawn ($671,919), winning a healthy 20% of its starts. Diodoro trained all but one of the 21 winners.

"We were sitting together at Saratoga and I was like, 'Hey, I want to win the owner's title at Oaklawn. What would it take to do that?'" Michael Sisk said. "I think that was in July. So we put this together from July until now. They've got a great group of people. Robertino and his team are incredible. They make it easy for me."

Sisk met Diodoro through the trainer's connection to M and M's racing manager, Cody Autrey, a highly successful conditioner in the late 2000s who now lives in Hot Springs. M and M now has approximately 30 horses in training—the bulk with Diodoro—but that total was in constant flux this year at Oaklawn because

of heavy activity at the claim box.Two-thirds of M and M's winners were in for a tag.M and M has already started to retool its

philosophy, purchasing a colt from the second crop of champion Shanghai Bobby for $180,000 at the 2018 Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-year-olds in training sale and spending $334,000 to acquire four more horses at the Texas Thoroughbred Association's 2-year-olds in training sale April 10.

M and M bought the TTA sale-topper, a Louisiana-bred filly by Bind, for $140,000 and a Texas-bred son of Grasshopper for $120,000. The colt, a full brother to multiple stakes winner Supermason, equaled the second-highest-priced horse sold.

The first broodmare raced by M and M, Summer House, was bred this year to Pioneerof the Nile, Sisk said. M and M claimed the 6-year-old daughter of Tiznow for $80,000 out of a sprint victory in August at Saratoga Race Course. Summer House represented M and M's second stakes winner in the Jan. 12 $50,000 Eldorado Stakes at Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel and was retired Jan. 27 following a runner-up finish in the $125,000 American Beauty Stakes at Oaklawn.

"We're going to try to get a horse in the Pegasus next year," Sisk said, referring to the $16.3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1). "I'm going to put the money up. We're going for more quality. But this is fun. We've had a blast."

Sisk and his wife reside in the Dallas suburb of Flower Mound but spend much of their time during the Oaklawn meeting and in the summer at their home on nearby Lake Hamilton. M and M's emerald green, black and white silks are like an equine billboard for local tourism, with "Hot Springs, AR" stripped across the front and back.

"It's home," said Michael Sisk, who has camped or rented vacation houses in Hot Springs for more than 20 years. "That's the base of our horse operation."

Sisk said he's been a "race fan forever" and met Autrey approximately three years ago when the owner was building his lake house. Since he and his wife spent so much time in Hot Springs, Sisk said the thought of purchasing a horse would give them "something to do" and "would be entertaining."

"One became two, two became 60," Michael Sisk said with a laugh.

M and M's first starter, Mishegas, also represented its first winner in a Jan. 21, 2017, allowance/optional claimer at Oaklawn. Diodoro had claimed the gelding about a month earlier for $40,000 at Los Alamitos.

Mishegas was M and M's only winner from six starters at the 2017 Oaklawn meeting. But a double Jan. 13—the second day of the 2018 meeting—and doubles Feb. 3 and Feb. 24 propelled M and M to its first owner's title.

Mission accomplished, Sisk said."I'm a business guy, we're competitive," said Sisk,

who grew up about 80 miles east of Memphis in Selmer, Tenn. "If we're going to do anything, we're going to be here to compete. We got the lay of the land, and it was like, 'Hey, how do they keep score here?' It was like, 'The guy that wins the most races.' Great, let's go do that." BH

10-YEAR-OLD SOI PHET SEEKS GRADED GLORY IN CALIFORNIANBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Not many horses in training still have Hollywood Park show up on their lifetime past performanc-

es, let alone a stakes horse still capable of running at a high level.

Benowitz Family Trust, Mathilde Powell, and Paul Viskovich's Soi Phet fits that unlikely billing, however, and could have his best shot at graded stakes glory—at the age of 10—April 28 in the $200,000 Californian Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park.

The California-bred Tizbud gelding has been an unquestioned success since his first race off the claim for trainer Leonard Powell. A $16,000 claim by Powell out of a conditional claiming race at Hollywood in May of 2013, Soi Phet won his next four starts at allowance levels, then finished third in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. Since the claim, he's won six stakes (four in Cal-bred company), placed in six others, and has turned that $16,000 investment

into $854,170 in earnings for his connections. But since the 2013 Awesome Again, graded tries

have not gone so well. In five subsequent attempts at the graded level, he's yet to hit the board. But there also won't be a dominating standout among the six entered in Saturday's Californian.

"I would have preferred to run him in a Cal-bred stakes, but there's really nothing available to him until (the July meeting at Los Alamitos Race Course)," Powell said. "I don't want to risk him for a tag again this year, and this probably didn't come up as strong as it should for a grade 2."

His reference to a claiming tag relates to Soi Phet's 2018 debut, when he was up for $62,500 in a 1 1/16-mile optional-claiming allowance at Santa Anita. Despite a less-than-comfortable trip, Soi Phet finished second to fellow Californian Prince of Arabia and went unclaimed.

"It was nerve-wracking (running him for a claiming tag), but every time we run a horse, it's nerve-wracking," said Powell, who has saddled the dark bay 40 times in his 56-race career. "He's 10 years old, so if somebody wanted to put up that much, it would

have taken a lot of (courage)."

The start was encouraging for Powell, as it showed the trainer the most important aspect for an older horse coming back off a layoff (his last start was Sept. 9)—he still wants to race.

"You always hope they do," Powell said. "They can train well in the morning, but you never know how they'll do in the afternoons until you race them. In the mornings, he's been very willing and he's

happy. That's the most important part."Twice as old as the rest of his competitors, Soi Phet

might be the sentimental favorite Saturday, but he likely won't be the favorite on the tote board.

That distinction will go to Jill Baffert's Dr. Dorr, the impressive last-out winner of the March 31 Santana Mile Stakes at Santa Anita.

Trained by Baffert's husband, Bob Baffert, the Lookin At Lucky gelding opened up a clear lead in the Santana Mile and comfortably held off second-place finisher The Lieutenant, who will try again in the Californian, by four lengths.

"We're stretching him out a little farther, so we'll see how far his speed will take him," Bob Baffert said of the 1 1/8-mile Californian distance. "He's bred to go that

far, and he's a well-bred horse, but you never know about the distance until they go out and do it."

The lone U.S. graded winner in the field is R3 Racing, Calara Farms, and ERJ Racing's Curlin Road, who took the Cougar II Handicap (G3) at Del Mar in July before a fourth-place run in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1). The Curlin gelding came in last of seven in the Santa Anita Handicap Presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino (G1) in his 2018 debut March 10.

Providing some international intrigue is Full of Luck, a Chilean-bred son of Lookin At Lucky who won five group events on grass (including one group 1 race) in his native country before he relocated to California. Now trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Full of Luck made his U.S. debut in the March 31 San Francisco Mile Stakes (G3T) at Golden Gate Fields but finished 11th of 12 as the 2-1 favorite. BH

DADDYS LIL DARLING STRETCHES OUT IN BEWITCH STAKESBy BloodHorse Staff

Over the course of her 16 career starts, Daddys Lil Darling's trademark has

been her versatility.Normandy Farm's homebred earned

her top-level victory on the turf in the Dec. 30 American Oaks (G1T), but she is also less than two lengths away from being a multiple grade 1 winner on the dirt, finishing second in both the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) and Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) last spring.

The Ken McPeek-trained filly is set to have her talents stretched again at Keeneland April 27 when she headlines a field of seven entered in the 1 1/2-mile, $150,000 Bewitch Stakes (G3T).

Though the 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy is trying 12 furlongs for the first time, she has done some of her best running over a route of ground. In addition to winning the 1 1/4-mile American Oaks, Daddys Lil Darling handily captured the 1 5/16-mile Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs in September, drawing clear for a 4 1/4-length score.

Daddys Lil Darling has yet to win at Keeneland—either on the turf or over the main track—but has never been worse than second in three outings over the Lexington oval. She finished a half-length behind La Coronel in the Oct. 14 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes presented by Lane's End (G1T) and also took place honors in the 2016 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1).

Installed as the 3-5 morning-line favorite for the Bewitch, Daddys Lil Darling enters off a fourth-place run in the March 10 Hillsborough Stakes (G2T) where she was beaten a length by winner Fourstar Crook.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith has the mount on Daddys Lil Darling and will break from post 5.

The main rival to Daddys Lil Darling looks to be Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Daring Duchess. Trained by Mike Maker, Daring Duchess enters Friday's race off runner-up efforts in The Very One Stakes (G3T)

and La Prevoyante Handicap (G3T) at Gulfstream Park. Daring Duchess finished second in last year's Bewitch. BH

STAGE LEFT SCORES ON DEBUT AT KEENELANDBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Stage Left, a half brother to Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) contender Midnight Bisou, broke his maid-

en on debut April 25 at Keeneland, taking a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds by four lengths over a muddy (sealed) track.

Breaking from post 4, Stage Left led the field through fractions of :22.56 and :45.68. Wayne Rice's Dalliance tracked the pace but fell back in the stretch as Stage Left drew away to complete the 4 1/2-furlong contest in a final time of :51.91.

Two Bit Kid took third, 4 1/4 lengths behind Dalliance.

Bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Wesley Ward-trained Stage Left is a son of the grade 3-winning mare Diva Delite. The Congrats gelding was a $15,000 purchase by Ward from the breeder's consignment to the 2017 Keeneland September yearling sale.

A son of A.P. Indy, Congrats was the leading first-crop sire of 2010 after siring two grade 1 winners in his first crop. He stands at WinStar Farm for a fee of $17,500.

Stage Left's win comes a week before his Midnight Lute half sister is set to run at Churchill Downs in the first leg of the filly Triple Crown. The Santa Anita Oaks (G1) winner is ranked first on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with 160 points. BH

SILKY SULLIVAN STEALS THE HEART OF THE NATIONBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

Sixty years ago, a copper-coated Thoroughbred came out of the West to capture the hearts of rac-

ing fans—not just in California, but across the nation.Racing for Tom Ross and Phil Klipstein, Silky

Sullivan had one way to win races—his way. And his way was coming from so far behind the field with such a swoop of thundering hooves that it delighted the crowds who flocked to see him. His last-minute rush for glory earned him a nickname: the "cardiac kid."

Trained by Reggie Cornell, California-bred Silky Sullivan made his first appearance at Hollywood Park in May 1957, winning a five-furlong maiden race by a nose. The race chart noted what would become the colt's trademark style: "Silky Sullivan lacked early speed, rallied after reaching the stretch, closed fast, and was up in the last strides."

Silky Sullivan won his first stakes, the one-mile Golden Gate Futurity, in quintessential fashion.

Tenth in a field of 10 through the first six furlongs—he was some 27 lengths behind the leader at the half-mile mark—Silky jetted through the final furlongs to win by three-quarters of a length.

In search of a classic, Team Silky Sullivan, which by this time included jockey Bill Shoemaker, tested the waters in the nine-furlong Santa Anita Derby. Those who might have expected something different—and there couldn't have been many—would have been sorely disappointed as would the majority

of his fans had he tried a different tactic.Comfortably and typically last after four furlongs,

some 29 lengths in arrears, he moved to 11 lengths behind the frontrunners after six furlongs. In the last three-eighths, the chestnut flash swallowed the competition for a 3 1/2-length victory. The crowd went wild.

Despite his future lack of success, he never lost his popularity, and the "golden boy" of the Golden State was quite the draw among his California base. Following his 1965 retirement from stud, he paraded each year at Santa Anita for the Santa Anita Derby and at Golden Gate Fields.

Silky Sullivan died in 1977 and is buried at Golden Gate Fields, which hosts the Silky Sullivan Handicap April 29.

Not far from where he lies is a plaque that honors the popularity he achieved in his life in death. It reads:
