ARROGATE, CALIFORNIA CHROME REMATCH IN PEGASUSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

The entries alone mark an early "mission accomplished" for the

first edition of the $12 million Pe-gasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) as the world's richest race set for Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park, attract-ing the world's two top dirt horses in training: California Chrome and Arrogate.

Both standout horses picked up hardware for their connections at the Eclipse Awards Jan. 21 as Arrogate was named champion 3-year-old male and California Chrome secured the Horse of the Year honor along with the champion older dirt male trophy. While the chestnut picked up the night's top honor based on a spectacular overall season, Arrogate scored a victory in the one race where the two met last year when he surged past California Chrome in deep stretch to win the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

The 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic was the most lucrative race ever conducted in North America, but the Pegasus will quickly rewrite the record book as North America's—and the world's—richest race, surpassing the $10 million Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) in the latter category.

California Chrome, the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the Pegasus, will start outside the field of 12 while Arrogate, the 7-5 second choice, will start from the rail.

"We can't make any excuses," California Chrome's trainer Art

Sherman said. "The only good thing I thought about this is that he doesn't have to be in the starting gate long."

According to BRISnet.com, since the track was reconfigured in 2006, horses who have started from post 12 in 1 1/8-mile races are 1-for-18.

"Chrome is Chrome; he's got tactical speed," Sherman said. "I was hoping that we would get closer inside. He will overcome all this, believe me."

Campaigned by co-breeder Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm, California Chrome won the 2016 Dubai World Cup, which aided him in becoming the top earner in North American racing history at $14.5 million. A victory Saturday, in what is scheduled to be the final time Sherman sends out the two-time Horse of the Year, would make the 6-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit the world's top earner as he would surpass the $19,005,276 collected by Japan's 2011 Horse of the Year Orfevre.

Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate shattered records in his stakes debut when he won the Travers Stakes (G1) in track-record time of 1:59.36 for 1 1/4 miles to score a 13 1/2-length victory at Saratoga Race Course. After taking the summer's top 1 1/4-mile race for 3-year-olds, the son of Unbridled's Song improved to 2-for-2 at the distance when he won the Breeders' Cup Classic and gave his trainer, Bob Baffert, a third straight victory in the race following triumphs by Bayern in 2014 (where California Chrome finished third) and American Pharoah in 2015.

Baffert liked the way Arrogate looked in his final serious work before the Pegasus, when he completed six furlongs in 1:12.13 Jan. 21 on a sealed Santa Anita track listed as "wet-fast."

"He's getting stronger every week. I wanted to see what I saw today and he's ready for the big race,"

Baffert said after the move. "Now we have to ship and there's more hurdles, but I love the way he's training. This horse is so fit. He's ready for the challenge."

The Pegasus will see the two champions shorten up a furlong from their Breeders' Cup Classic efforts. California Chrome has won two of his four dirt starts at the 1 1/8-mile distance with victories in last year's Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita and a dominating performance there in the 2014 Santa Anita Derby (G1), which set him up for a pair of classic victories.

Arrogate will try the distance for the first time but the five-race win streak he'll carry into the Pegasus includes two 10-furlong scores as well as three straight wins at 1 1/16 miles in maiden and allowance tests in Southern California.

Both Southern California-based horses will be starting at Gulfstream for the first time and both will figure prominently when the Longines World's Best Racehorse is announced Jan. 24.

"It's going to be a great race," said Frank Stronach. The race is scheduled to be aired during a 4:30 to 6 p.m. broadcast on NBC.

Baffert thanked the Stronach Group for bringing some added excitement to the racing calendar.

"I think it's thinking out of the box. It couldn't have come at a better year when you've got the No. 1 and No. 2 horses hooked up together," Baffert said. "It's very rare that you'll get that type of a matchup. It's like a Breeders' Cup all over again.

"At this time of the year it's usually really quiet, usually we're just getting our horses ready for the spring and summer. I think everybody is going to be watching. The $12 million catches a lot of people's attention. This is Frank Stronach's dream and I'm proud of being part of it."

As for the others, an accomplished field is scheduled to fill the Gulfstream starting gate.

The Pegasus entries include six grade/group 1 winners in Arrogate, California Chrome, Eragon, Keen Ice, Noble Bird, and Shaman Ghost. That is just one less than the seven grade/group 1 winners going into

last year's Dubai World Cup of California Chrome, Hoppertunity, Special Fighter, Frosted, Mshawish, Keen Ice, and Hokko Tarumae.

The Ruis Racing slot that Clark Handicap (G1) winner Gun Runner had reached a deal for, is filled by Ruis Racing's War Envoy as Gulfstream officials said Jan. 22 that Gun Runner's connections had not completed testing requirements to ship into the track after an EHV-I outbreak at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Keen Ice, the third morning-line choice at 12-1, pulled off one big upset as he rallied past Triple Crown winner American Pharoah to win the 2015 Travers Stakes.

Noble Bird certainly is capable of a huge effort as the 6-year-old son of Birdstone won the 2015 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) and set a track record at the Pegasus distance in taking last year's Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2).

A Canadian champion and classic winner in 2015 in Canada, Shaman Ghost registered a strong 4-year-old season last year with wins in the Brooklyn Invitational (G2) and Woodward (G1) stakes.

Breaking Lucky secured a Canadian classic in 2015 and Eragon will try for the upset in his U.S. debut after winning three group 1 stakes in Argentina in 2015 and 2016. BH s Share this story

SALES UPDATE

OBS JANUARY UNDER TACK SHOW WITHOUT A HITCHBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

An American Lion gelding who was a late addition to the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s

January winter mixed sale and an Overdriven filly topped the Jan. 23 pre-sale workouts at the Ocala, Fla., sales facility.

About 100 agents, trainers, owners, and consignors listened as announcer John Henderson described each horse on the track for the under tack show, conducted over a fast all-weather track some 12 hours after a half-inch of rain fell in the north central Florida area.

With a strong headwind facing the workers, they galloped strongly or breezed through the stretch in either three-eighths or half-mile workouts under intermittent clouds and sun. The under tack show went off without a hitch, thanks in part to OBS' all-weather track.

The fastest time of :33 4/5 for three furlongs was turned in by Hill Croome, an unraced 3-year-old American Lion gelding consigned by Niall Brennan Stables as Hip 297, one of the last horses entered in the supplemental catalog.

Bred in Kentucky by Brian Russell Cleveland, Hill Croome was trained and prepped by Gayle Woods. He previously went through sale rings at 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale and 2016 OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale, going unsold at final bids of $10,000 and $20,000, respectively.

"He's a nice, honest horse," Woods said of the gelding out of the stakes-placed Gold Legend mare Sauternes. "He's very athletic, with good, average size."

Dubai Princess, an unraced Overdriven filly consigned by Corona Leaders Corp. as Hip 253, worked a half-mile in :47 2/5, fastest at the distance.

Bred in Florida by Dr. Rick Erwin and Janet Erwin, Dubai Princess is out of an unraced Gulch mare and is a half sister to stakes-placed Raise the Bridle. She is from the female family of grade 2 winner and grade 1-placed Strike a Deal. The filly went through sales rings three times previously, having been bought back for $5,700 as weanling before being purchased by Marcos Arenas for $14,000 out of the 2015 OBS fall sale. She was a $17,000 RNA at last year's OBS June sale.

During the under tack show, 41 horses—recently turned 2-year-olds or 3-year-olds in training—went to the track, with 20 galloping rather than breeze. None of the 2-year-olds breezed.

"That was typical under tack show," said Tod Wojciechowski, OBS sales director. "We would like to not have had the headwind but I thought everyone contended well with the conditions at hand. It was smooth and safe. With the amount of rain we got last night, our track is built to handle that kind of weather."

The horses that worked Monday are consigned in the horses of racing age portion of the sale that begins following the consignor preferred session Wednesday, Jan. 25. That session, and the following day's open session, both begin at 10:30 a.m. BH

SALES UPDATE

OBS MIXED SALE CONSOLIDATION HAS BENEFITSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

As she hustled through the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s barn area with an armload of stall door

cards, Kim Harrison stopped long enough to offer an optimistic opinion about the upcoming OBS winter mixed sale.

Like many consignors, Harrison's upbeat view of the Jan. 25-26 auction is buoyed by a decision OBS made last year to cancel its October mixed sale. That decision, due to the beginning of an extensive sale pavilion renovation, subsequently resulted in OBS deciding to move its August yearling sale to October going forward, leaving the January auction the only mixed sale each year.

"There were not enough horses for both sales, so it will just make January better," said Harrison, who has a 27-strong consignment this year.

Harrison said the January sale is an integral part of her sales program, since she is based in Ocala and has strong clientele in Florida. Harrison consigned a filly by The Factor that topped the 2015 winter sale at $190,000 and a Curlin filly she sold for $145,000 was the second-highest priced horse last year.

A total of 541 horses are cataloged for the sale, which consists of consignor preferred horses of racing age sessions Wednesday, Jan. 25 and a Jan. 26 open session. The auction begins at 10:30 a.m. ET daily.

Last year, 137 head changed hands during the preferred session for total receipts of $2,471,000, an average price of $18,037, and an $8,500 median. The horses of racing age segment, which has become one of the most popular features of the sale, saw 61 horses average $15,528 on a gross of $947,200 last year, with a $10,000 median. The open session resulted in 163 horses bringing $1,179,300, an average price of $7,235, and a $4,000 median.

Consignor Niall Brennan agreed that reconfiguring the OBS calendar made sense, especially during a time of a declining buyer base.

"Times are changing and it really was time for them to consolidate both sales," said Brennan. "In these regional markets there are fewer horses and to have two mixed sales so close together didn’t make sense. The idea is trying to change things up. So we are trying to be creative and I think October will be great time to have yearling sale here in place of what used to be a mixed sale."

Brennan said his consignment will not be as strong as it could have been since three horses of racing age he was preparing to offer have been withdrawn due to OBS precluding from its grounds any horses that were in the state of Louisiana past Dec. 10. Those restrictions were a result of an outbreak of equine herpesvirus at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

"They did the right thing," he said. "You can't take chances with things like that. It's just unfortunate, with the timing. They will just have to stay in training. Even though they were scratched out of the sale, we are confident in them and we will keep going and try to market them privately." BH

BROWN FINALLY BREAKS THROUGH WITH ECLIPSEBy Lenny Shulman

In 2014, after enjoying the second-best day by a trainer in the history of the Breeders’ Cup, Chad Brown felt

like he had a strong chance to gain his first Eclipse Award. But the victories by Dayatthespa, Bobby's Kitten, and Lady Eli didn’t get Brown over the hump. Todd Pletcher, Brown’s rival for East Coast superiority, instead collected his seventh Eclipse, having outpaced Brown in earnings and victories for the season. That re-sult left Brown dejected as he talked to a reporter early the following year.

“It’s like a heavyweight championship fight,” the reporter told him. “The challenger can’t win on points. He has to go for a knockout.”

Brown brightened up momentarily, enjoying the metaphor. Just seven years into his training career at that point, he’d made steep progress in putting together a stable of top-flight owners and choice horses, having come a long way from 2008 when he left his position as an assistant for Bobby Frankel and hung out his shingle with a couple dozen claiming horses munching hay in his shedrow.

Brown is ambitious and he’s intense. He’s not going to win any Mr. Congeniality contests because he puts the oversight of his horses above shooting the breeze and socializing. He is appreciative of his help, but demanding of them. He’s got a degree from Cornell University and with it the requisite smarts that is attractive to many owners. If you catch him at the right time, he can be engaging and funny. He likes to tell stories from his time with the legendary Frankel, and he will open up if you’ve earned his trust.

But he also wanted that recognition, that hardware that proves that you’ve made it all the way.

In 2015 it wouldn’t have mattered if Brown had stood on his crew cut and spit nickels into the grandstand. A guy named Baffert pulled off the Triple Crown, rumored to be a pretty rare accomplishment, and nobody else was going to win the trainer’s Eclipse for that year. So Brown took two more Breeders’ Cup victories (Stephanie's Kitten and Wavell Avenue) back to New York and reloaded.

And in 2016 he came out firing. Sure, there were the Belmont Park meet titles, but he’d done that before. The big move came at prestigious Saratoga Race Course, where Brown had grown up going to the races with his father. He jumped out to an early lead and, matching Pletcher this time starter-for-starter, never relinquished his advantage.

New Money Honey won for Brown on the first day of the 2016 Breeders’ Cup. Then, oddly enough, he went cold, getting seconds with Flintshire, Lady Eli, and Wavell Avenue. The final bell sounded with Baffert landing solidly in the Classic (G1) with Arrogate.

For the year Brown topped all trainers with earnings of $23.1 million, and won more grade 1s than any of them. Following in Frankel’s footsteps, he landed Juddmonte Farms as a client and conditioned Flintshire to a turf championship while also scoring grade 1s on dirt with the likes of Connect and Practical Joke.

This time, the referee raised Brown’s arm. He’d scored the knockout. BH

A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN: 'CHROME' AND GLADNEYBy Karen Johnsont @writerhorses

The first time Dihigi Gladney swung his leg over California Chrome's back, eased his

seat in the saddle, and slipped his boots into the stirrups, the exercise rider wasn't at all prepared for what he would feel next.

"This horse was like a beast," Gladney exclaimed recently when he recalled their first moment as horse and rider in the fall of 2015 at Los Alamitos Race Course. "It's one thing to see him, but when I actually got on him, it was like, man, they just set me on King Kong."

This reflection comes as Gladney's rides aboard North America's richest racehorse are coming to an end. The 6-year-old will complete his storied career with the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park Jan. 28, and then will head to Kentucky for stud duties at Taylor Made Farm.

Gladney, whose effervescent smile is seemingly ever-present, said he has been doing his best to keep thoughts of farewells at bay.

"We haven't had our cry party yet, but it will be a change for all of us on the California Chrome team, and for his fans because people love this horse all over the world," he said.

It made perfect sense that trainer Art Sherman designated Gladney as the horse's exercise rider when the 2014 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Preakness Stakes (both G1) winner returned to California in 2015 from Taylor Made Farm, where he had been recovering from a cannon bone bruise.

California Chrome requires someone who has the finesse to handle a head-strong animal, without fighting with him. Gladney, whose formative years were spent riding bulls and rogue ponies, fit the bill.

"They are a match made in heaven," Sherman said of California Chrome and Gladney. "The horse loves him. He has had some scary moments, with Chrome, too. I've seen him walk on his hind legs, front legs up in the air, and I get palpitations."

Gladney grew up in Compton, Calif., an area in Los Angeles known for its gang-related crime. For Gladney perhaps the biggest danger he faced as a kid was from the wild ponies he rode at breakneck speed down dusty horse paths surrounding his grandfather's riding stable in nearby Gardena.

"That stable was a great place for me to grow up," Gladney said. "My grandfather would tell me, 'If I have you pushing this wheelbarrow you can't do anything bad because you will be too tired to get in trouble.

"When I was 6 years old, I was riding a 30-year-old Thoroughbred and acting as a trail guide at my grandfather's stable," he continued. "I was basically the trail snitch because when the horses and riders got out of line, I would whistle and point. And then there were the wild ponies I rode... my grandfather bought some of the rankest horses, but he wanted me to ride my best."

Maybe because he became immune to tumbling to the ground at an early age, Gladney's teenage years were spent at rodeos, trying his best not to be rocketed into the air by bucking bulls. Charlie "Pee Wee" Sampson, the first African-American to win a world title in bull riding, was Gladney's inspiration in that particular pursuit.

In his 20s, Gladney came to Los Alamitos and began working as an exercise rider. Later he became a jockey, piloting Arabians, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, and even mules. A serious riding

accident, in which he broke his back and was confined to a metal body brace for months, kept Gladney out of the saddle for several years. During that time he struggled mentally from depression associated with being deprived of doing what he loved most. But he was determined to return to competitive riding, so he picked up where he left off, winning races at Los Alamitos. He finally called time on his career in 2012, after riding 199 winners.

Gladney's main job these days has allowed him to relive some of his favorite childhood memories. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, John Davis, Gladney owns Got Ponies, a business which provides pony rides.

"I love my pony rides. My ponies are at Santa Anita every Saturday and Sunday, and we meet a lot of great people there," said the father of three. "I love doing the birthday parties when we have the time because they're fun. It's exciting when you meet kids who went

to a party a few years ago and you see them again at another party and they ask about such-and-such pony."

But his partnership with the copper-colored chestnut with the four white stockings was truly what was occupying Gladney's mind on this recent morning at Gulfstream.

"He has moves that are unbelievable and people wonder how I stay on him," Gladney said. "When he does put all four feet on the ground, I look at all his feet to see if there are springs on his hooves. There is no way a horse that is 16.3 hands should get in the air and do the things he does.

"He hasn't (thrown me), knock wood," he added as he rapped his fist on the side of the barn for good measure. "You know how you say someone is looking over you? I think it's my granddad and every cowboy that has ridden a horse like this."

This particular cowboy won't be able to ride off in the sunset with his horse, but you know Gladney will never forget the journey he and California Chrome shared. BH

BEAUTYINTHEPULPIT ENTERS STUD IN NEW YORKBy BloodHorse Staff

Multiple stakes-placed winner Beautyinthepulpit has been retired to stud at Amy and Jody Boll's Buck-

ridge Farm near Kinderhook, N.Y.Beautyinthepulpit, by Pulpit, won eight races

and earned $410,627, including a runner-up finish in Aqueduct's Alex M. Robb Stakes, and third-place finishes in the Richard W. Small Stakes, the Empire Classic Handicap, and Kings Point Stakes.

The 9-year-old stallion is from a female family cultivated by perennial leading New York breeder Albert Fried Jr. Beautyinthepulpit's dam, grade 2 winner Stolen Beauty (Deputy Minister), also produced stakes winner Moonlightandbeauty—the dam of grade 3 winner Giant Moon and leading New York-bred sprinter Moonlight Song—and stakes-placed winner Stolen Thunder.

Beautyinthepulpit will stand as property of Buckridge for a private fee, with the stud fee waived for mares with black type under the first two dams; that earned more than $50,000 on the track; have produced a winner of $50,000 or more; or for breeders who send more than one mare per season.

"Beautyinthepulpit represents a unique opportunity for budget-conscious New York breeders," said Buckridge owner Amy Boll. "Not only is he by Pulpit, one of the most sought-after sires of sires on the planet, he's also out of a New York, graded-stakes winning Deputy Minister mare, and he's got the gorgeous shoulder you'd expect from that lineage. We're going to support him with our own mares, and we invite breeders to visit him in the coming months." BH

JOCKEY AGENT GONZALEZ HAS LICENSE REVOKEDBy Tom Precious

New York regulators slapped a veteran jockey agent with a minimum 10-year license revocation for his role

in a case alleging computer tampering at the New York Racing Association.

The New York State Gaming Commission on Jan. 23 sharply strengthened the punishment recommended by a hearing officer in the case of Mike Gonzalez, who last year was arrested for bribing a New York Racing Association employee to gain access to "non-public" information on the InCompass computer system that tracks a variety of race-related details.

Robert Williams, executive director of the gaming commission, told the board Jan. 23 that Gonzalez had entered a plea deal, admitting to an attempt to commit computer trespassing, to resolve the case against him. He gave no specifics about the case.

The board, Williams said, has the power to take away a racing license if an applicant or licensee fails to establish "experience, character, and general fitness" to work in the industry.

Williams said a hearing on the matter was held in October before a state hearing officer. That hearing officer recommended Gonzalez's license be revoked or suspended for at least three years and a fine up to $25,000 be levied.

Peter Moschetti Jr., acting as temporary board chairman during the NYSGC meeting, said the hearing officer's findings were accepted by a 3-0 vote of the commission. But he said the officer's punishment recommendations were rejected. Instead, he said, the agency is revoking Gonzalez's license and is making him ineligible to re-apply for at least 10 years. It also is imposing a $25,000 fine against him.

In a press release issued last January, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown accused Gonzalez of accessing the computer system at least 170 times over a 15-month period; saying he paid a NYRA employee $100 a month to access information. BH

RACING

LONG MAY THEY RUNBy Bob Barry

I'm not big on bumper stickers. When you live in New York and parallel-park your car on the

streets, you soon realize that bumpers are there to let you know when it's time to shift from drive to reverse, and vice versa. Besides, there are better avenues for personal expression, such as voting, signing petitions, and making speeches.

But of all the bumper stickers I've gently tapped over more than forty years of New York City parking, my hands-down favorite, and the one that comes closest to capsulizing my personal philosophy, is the one that says "the more people I meet, the more I like my dog."

I was reminded of this just the other night while tracking the Eclipse Award results on my Twitter feed.

One of the great things about horse racing is that the people who work in the industry, along with those who support it by owning and racing horses or by betting on them, tend to be people who love horses. And it's my experience that these people who love horses also tend to be sweet on dogs and/or cats, and that these traits are usually found in better types of people.

The noted lover of Thoroughbreds and greyhounds supported this hypothesis, Steven

Crist, who took home a well-deserved Eclipse Award of Merit and told the audience (according to my Twitter feed) "As the people in this room know, your animals are your family."

But you can't pick your family, and there are exceptions to every rule, which serves to explain why my Twitter feed took a bizarre turn when Perry Martin accepted California Chrome's second Horse of the Year award.

The first sign of trouble came at 10:24 p.m. from Jay Privman of the Daily Racing Form: "There's a cool way to accept Horse of the Year, and there's this."

Three minutes later, Privman's colleague David Grening tweeted stage management advice: "Cue the music."

One minute later, the graceful MC of the awards, Jeannine Edwards, managed to tweet out a one-word SOS: "Help!!!"

It's unfortunate that the classy Art Sherman, the shareholders in California Chrome LLC, and the Eclipse Awards audience had to endure the six-minute-long car wreck of a speech. But the memory of Chrome's remarkable career will long outlive that of his breeder/owner. Here's hoping California Chrome gives his legion of fans one last great thrill in his swan song.

If "researching" this column unfortunately required watching replays of Martin's boorish

speech, that duty was more than offset by the pleasure of seeing Rick Porter's serene acceptance of Songbird's Eclipse, and B. Wayne Hughes' and Richard Mandella's acceptance of Beholder's final honor.

Mandella closed by saying, "My life will never be the same without her." Something anyone who loves animals can truly understand. BH
