CODE OF HONOR 'ALL SYSTEMS GO' AFTER FOUNTAIN OF YOUTHBy BloodHorse Staff

Trainer Shug McGaughey reported March 3 that William S. Farish's Code of Honor came out of his

victory in Saturday's $400,000 Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) in good order.

"So far, all systems are go," said McGaughey less than 16 hours after watching the 3-year-old colt win Saturday and bounce back from a disappointing performance Jan. 5 in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes, also at Gulfstream Park. "He seems to have come back fine. We shipped him back last night to Payson (Park Training Center), and he seems fine this morning."

After wrapping up his 2-year-old campaign with a second-place finish in Belmont Park's Champagne Stakes (G1) last fall, Code of Honor was the heavy favorite in the Mucho Macho Man. But the son of Noble Mission came up empty and was never a factor, finishing fourth. Dismissed at 9-1 Saturday, Code of Honor redeemed himself in the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth to become his sire's first black-type winner.

McGaughey, a Hall of Fame trainer who won the 2013 Fountain of Youth, Besilu Stables Florida Derby (G1), and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) with Orb, said he needed to make some changes.

"Obviously, I thought about (the Mucho Macho Man) a lot," he said. "I thought, from what I saw, he probably needed the race and, probably, maybe, needed to change his running style just a little bit. We needed to get into him and train him a little harder and more frequent and see if he would take it. We thought, 'If he takes it, we'll go on.' But it was something that came to me pretty quick."

McGaughey said his preference is to remain at Gulfstream and follow the same route as Orb, running next in the $1 million Xpressbet Florida Derby March 30. "But we're going to have to see how he bounces out of this one," he said.

No matter where Code of Honor shows up next, McGaughey doesn't believe the longer distances of the spring classics will be a detriment for the Farish homebred.

"I don't think distance will be a problem at all," McGaughey added. "He had a brother who ran two turns in Kentucky, and Noble Mission ran as far as you wanted him to run. He was a mile-and-a-half, mile-and-five-eighths horse. (Code of Honor) is a very efficient kind of horse in the way he moves."

Trainer Mark Hennig said Sunday morning that Bourbon Lane Stable and Lake Star Stable's Bourbon War was "bright and very happy" after closing to finish second behind Code of Honor in the Fountain of Youth. It was the second consecutive year Hennig saddled the runner-up in the race. Last year, Hennig's Strike Power finished behind Promises Fulfilled.

"He came out of it well," Hennig said. "There were a few things that might have made a difference. Coming off the turn, he had to swing just a little wide. But that's horse racing."

Hennig is also optimistic about his colt's ability to go longer.

"He's a horse that likes to run. I really liked his stride the last sixteenth. He just lowered his head, and he really knew what he wanted," he added. "I don't know if you always get that pace set up, but I think he's proven he doesn't need a pace set up. If they're going slower, he'll race a little closer."

Hennig said his immediate thought is to run next in the Florida Derby. "But we have to see how the horse is doing," he added. "He's also won at Aqueduct."

Trainer Ken McPeek reported that Signalman, third in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) in November, came out of the Fountain of Youth well after finishing seventh. The plan is still to run next in the April 6 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. Sagamore Farm reported that Global Campaign, who finished fifth in the Fountain of Youth, grabbed himself leaving the gate and that it affected his performance.

Cash is King and D.J. Stable's multiple grade 1 winner Jaywalk, the 2018 champion juvenile filly, exited her fourth-place finish in the $200,000 Davona Dale Stakes (G2) in good order, trainer John Servis reported Sunday morning.

The one-mile Davona Dale marked the sophomore debut of Jaywalk, favored at odds of 1-5 in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies. Her four-race win streak was snapped when she beaten 5 1/2 lengths by 51-1 longshot Jeltrin.

"She's doing super, very good. She was bright-eyed this morning, looked great. She just needed the race, that's all," Servis said. "It's a steppingstone, and that's what we were using it as. I thought she could win anyway, and she didn't, but that's all right. She came out of it good, and we're going to move forward. She'll be ready in May, I can tell you that."

Servis said Jaywalk remains on course for her first major goal of 2019, the May 3 Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), and expects to have one more race until then, either in the March 30 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) or the April 6 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.

"We'll look at the Ashland, which puts us a week closer to the Oaks, and the Gulfstream Oaks, which comes back quicker but gives us an extra week to get to Kentucky," Servis said. "We'll play it by ear, see how she's doing, see how the fields are shaping up, and just let her tell us." BH

SUPER STEED OFF DERBY TRAIL; GRAY ATTEMPT TO MISS REBELBy Robert Yates

Super Steed is off the Kentucky Derby trail because of bone bruising in a front leg, trainer Larry Jones

said the morning of March 3.While the injury isn't career-threatening, Jones said

Super Steed will require 60-90 days of rest, eliminating any chance of wearing the roses like his sire, Super Saver, did in 2010. Based this winter at Oaklawn Park, Super Steed, at odds of 62-1, was a three-quarter-length winner of the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) Feb. 18.

"He's walking, but not perfect by any means," Jones said before training hours. "We just found out yesterday afternoon that's he got the issue because I galloped him yesterday and he came back and everything was good."

Super Steed was being pointed toward the $1 million Rebel Stakes (G2) March 16, Oaklawn's final major prep for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 13.

Campaigned by his breeder, Mike Pressley, and Steed Jackson, Super Steed broke his maiden by six

lengths against optional-claiming allowance company Nov. 24 at Churchill Downs. After finishing fourth as the even-money favorite in the $75,000 Sugar Bowl Stakes Dec. 22 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots and seventh in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 25 at Oaklawn, Super Steed won the Southwest with

a powerful five-wide move on the backstretch under Terry Thompson. He had a total of 10 points toward entry in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

"He came out of that last race with a little more of an issue than I realized," Jones said. "We did some X-rays, and it just looks like if we don't stop now, we're going to run into trouble. Thank God there's no surgery, no nothing needed. Just needs rest."

Jones said Super Steed will be sent to Kentucky to recover.

"It's one of these FRAM oil filter deals—pay me now or pay me later," Jones said. "We could probably get another race out of him. We would probably be OK, but probably wouldn't come out of it as good as what we went in."

In another development Sunday morning, trainer Jinks Fires said Smarty Jones winner Gray Attempt was no longer under consideration for the Rebel Stakes because of a minor setback. Fires said the hope is the son of Graydar who finished 11th in the Southwest can make the Arkansas Derby. BH

SANTA ANITA CANCELS MARCH 7 RACINGBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Santa Anita Park announced it will not race March 7 because of "anticipated inclement weather."The decision was first announced through a text-

message alert to horsemen March 3. Multiple officials at The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita, did not respond to requests for comment. A press release Sunday from Santa Anita said the track intends to run 11 races March 8. Eight races were carded for Thursday, with four scheduled for the turf course and four scheduled for the main track.

The California Horse Racing Board stewards at Santa Anita said track management had to get CHRB approval to cancel the card and that management communicated to them "with heavy rain expected (March 6), they felt there would be better racing conditions on Friday than Thursday."

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain is expected in Southern California Wednesday, and there is a chance of showers Thursday. The Weather Channel's website, Weather.com, says a half-inch of rainfall is expected Wednesday, with a 40% chance of rain Thursday. There is also a high chance of rain March 5.

The decision comes a day after Eskenforadrink was fatally injured during a race on a sloppy main track, the 20th equine fatality related to racing or training at Santa Anita since its meet opened Dec. 26. Santa Anita also had an increased security presence at the track Sunday as it dealt with protests outside the racetrack's property. BH

NOLO CONTESTO STILL ON DERBY TRAIL AFTER ALLOWANCE LOSSBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Don't count out Hronis Racing's Nolo Contesto as a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve

(G1) prospect just yet.Two days after Nolo Contesto finished a well-beaten

second as the 3-5 favorite to Roadster in a first-level allowance at Santa Anita Park, trainer John Sadler said the Pioneerof the Nile ridgling could take one shot at a Derby prep in April.

"We're not off the trail with Nolo Contesto," Sadler said March 3.

The trainer made his decision after he heard feedback from jockey Joel Rosario about Nolo Contesto's trip in the one-mile allowance March 1. Nolo Contesto had an inside trip throughout, and Rosario indicated the horse was never comfortable on the rail.

"Joel said he was uncomfortable on the inside, and I felt Mike (Smith aboard Roadster) rode a beautiful race to trap him down in there," Sadler said. "So it's actually

going to be a good school. He's only run (three times), so you need to get knocked around and see how they handle adversity. It wasn't a great result, but it was a good experience for him.

"If he comes back good and moves forward, we'll look at a big race in the first part of April. We could ship or whatever."

Sadler didn't indicate which Derby preps he would consider, but April races on the Derby trail include the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland, the Santa Anita Derby (G1), and the Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2) at Aqueduct Racetrack April 6, as well as the Stonestreet Lexington Stakes (G3) at Keeneland and the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park April 13.

Nolo Contesto began his career with a troubled debut at Del Mar Dec. 1, when Rosario lost his iron early and he finished fifth. He then broke his maiden Jan. 4, when he bested the talented Omaha Beach by a half-length in a one-mile race at Santa Anita. He was then scratched from the Feb. 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita because of a sloppy main track that day. BH

ANALYSIS

HOW GOOD ARE SALE 2-YEAR-OLDS AS RACEHORSES?By Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

The obvious benefit of acquiring a racehorse through a 2-year-olds in training sale is getting a horse

that's already proved it can hold up to training and conditioning. Granted, how a horse ultimately performs in competition is always a question, but handling the stress of a public sale and being fit enough to work a clean eighth- or quarter-mile is no small hurdle cleared.

As might be expected, juveniles sold at auction find the winner's circle with greater frequency than the 2-year-old population overall.

Research compiled by BloodHorse MarketWatch shows 78% of the 2-year-old horses sold at auctions from 2000-17 went on to start in a race and 76% of those runners became winners. By comparison, of all the named 2-year-olds representing the same crops as the sale horses, and including the sale horses, 69%

became runners collectively and 67% of those runners became winners.

But what about the quality of the runners? MarketWatch wondered whether the 2-year-olds sold at auction performed any better than their corresponding crops as a whole. Performance records show the sale horses have the edge here, too.

Among the horses sold during 2000-17 North American 2-year-olds in training auctions, 37,988 went on to start in a race and 6% of them became black-type winners. The runners also earned $66,976 on average. MarketWatch only considered racing statistics through the 2017 sale year because we wanted to capture lifetime race records at least through the horses' sophomore years.

For all juveniles during the same period, 3.9% of 389,637 runners went on to become black-type winners, and they collectively averaged $49,218 in earnings.

ANALYSIS

Two-year-olds in training sales were conceived in Florida in the 1950s as a way to sell horses with unfashionable or downright poor pedigrees. The horses back then had to prove their worth on the track. Over time, the 2-year-olds in training sales morphed into their own market, driven largely by yearling-to-juvenile pinhookers who capitalized on the potentially lucrative increase in value a horse can realize between when it's a yearling to when it's a budding racehorse.

Just in the last five years, the 2-year-olds in training market has matured substantially. From 2000 through 2012, the juveniles sold at auction in North America represented 8.1% of all named foals for the crops represented. The percentage of juveniles sold rose to 9.5% for the 2013 sale year and jumped again to 11.6% in 2014. During the 2014-18 sale years, the percentage of sales 2-year-olds from all 2-year-olds averaged 10.9%.

Average 2-year-old price has also grown substantially. Juveniles in training sold during the 2000-13 sale years

averaged $55,061 compared with a $78,105 average during 2014-2018.

Fortunately, the average earnings of these 2-year-olds sold has grown, too. Horses sold as juveniles during 2000-13 went on to earn an average $67,083 as racehorses. Horses sold during the 2014-17 sales (with the youngest ones now 4) have averaged $69,248 in earnings.

Finding the good, let alone elite, racehorse is always a challenge, but the 2-year-olds in training market has proved to be valuable shopping territory for any owner or agent. BH

EDWARDS GOING LEFT DIGS IN TO WIN TIZNOW STAKESBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Hronis Racing's Edwards Going Left didn't have much go his way early in the $100,000 Tiznow

Stakes at Santa Anita Park March 3, but by the end of the one-mile dirt test, he completed what may have been the top effort of his career.

After a slow break from post 4 in the field of five older California-breds, jockey Joel Rosario asked the 5-year-old Midnight Lute gelding to get into the race but soon after had to steady slightly as they headed into the first turn. Rosario then cut over to the rail and spurted through on the inside to get in front of King Abner, who for a moment appeared to be set for an easy lead.

"He broke a little bit slow, and I used him a little bit," Rosario said. "It looked like there was a spot where he wanted to go after it, and I had some room to go, so I let him find himself—where he wanted to be."

By the time he ran the first quarter in :23.11, Edwards Going Left went from last at the start to first by a length, and the rest of the trip was a duel to the

wire. Little Red Feather Racing, Summit Racing, Ticket to Ride, and Jackie Rojas' King Abner cut the margin to a half-length through a half-mile in :46.20, and it was just a head through six furlongs in 1:10.12, but Edwards Going Left did not relent. King Abner even put a head in front with a furlong to run, but Edwards Going Left battled back on the inside to win by a half-length in a final time of 1:35.81.

"Exciting. That's the strongest finisher in the country," winning trainer John Sadler said of Rosario. "He's so good at the end. I don't see Rosario losing many photos."

The top pair was well clear of the rest. Surfing Star checked in third, 8 1/2 lengths back.

Edwards Going Left's performance also left his rival's connections in awe. Little Red Feather's Billy Koch said, "I can't believe that horse came back on us. That was unbelievable."

The Tiznow was the first two-turn win for Edwards Going Left, who is now a three-time Cal-bred stakes winner and also has a pair of grade 1 sprint placings on his résumé. His only other two-turn try was a neck loss when he finished third in the Sept. 8 E.B. Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos Race Course.

"He's been running against much better," Sadler said of Edwards Going Left, who finished second to Ax Man in a seven-furlong allowance Feb. 8 at Santa Anita. "I think Ax Man will be the favorite in the (March 9) San Carlos (Stakes, G2), and (Edwards Going Left) just runs a good race all the time.

"Seven-eighths has been one of his best distances, but we thought a mile was in his range."

Bred by Red Baron's Barn and Vaya Con Suerte out of the Broken Vow mare Dypsy, Edwards Going Left has now earned nearly $600,000 and has an 8-3-4 record from 19 starts. He was a $50,000 claim by Sadler and Hronis out of his debut in February 2017. BH

MIA MISCHIEF COMES BACK STRONG IN OAKLAWN SEASON DEBUTBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Longines Test Stakes (G1) runner-up Mia Mischief made a successful season debut

at Oaklawn Park, taking a six-furlong op-tional-claiming allowance March 3 by three furlongs.

The 4-year-old Into Mischief filly last raced four months ago in the Nov. 3 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), marking the end of her sophomore season with an off-the-board finish.

Campaigned by Heiligbrodt, Heiligbrodt, Heider Family Stables, and Madaket Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen, Mia Mischief brought her record to 5-5-0 from 12 starts, with $549,620 in earnings.

Mia Mischief outran stablemate Sister Nation in the stretch Sunday, to complete the $88,000 test in a final time of 1:11.29 over a good (sealed) track.

Breaking from the rail, jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. allowed Mia Mischief to settle behind leaders Silken Goods and Keep Your Distance, who set fractions of :22.21 and :46.67 through a half-mile. As those two fell back, Sister Nation and Pretty Greeley stepped up, but Santana had guided Mia Mischief off the rail and found clear sailing three wide.

Mia Mischief began her 3-year-old season with a second-place finish in the Dixie Belle Stakes at Oaklawn. She followed with back-to-back victories in the Purple Martin Stakes and Eight Belles Stakes Presented by Kentucky Trailer (G2), both at Oaklawn. After placing fifth in the Victory Ride Stakes (G3), she was the runner-up in both the Test and the Prioress Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course.

"Always a little extra nervous bringing them back from a freshening," Scott Heider said via Twitter. "Mia Mischief was so sharp today. Team Asmussen, I greatly appreciate your incredible horsemanship. Mia was one happy filly today! Big year ahead!"

Future plans have not yet been announced. BHs Share this story

NYRA BOLSTERS CLAIMING RACE PURSESBy BloodHorse Staff

The New York Racing Association announced

purse values March 3 for open claiming races will increase, beginning with the March 8 card at Aqueduct Racetrack.

In January, the New York State Gaming Commission formally adopted an amendment allowing racing organizations to apply for adjustments to the purse-to-claim ratio, with the provision that enhanced measures to ensure the soundness and safety of equine athletes are in place.

NYRA applied for—and subsequently received—such an exemption that provides for an adjustment to claiming race purses through March 31.

In addition to the standard level of pre-race safety scrutiny applied to all horses racing at a NYRA track, NYRA will apply an additional secondary level of scrutiny to all horses competing in races with adjusted purse-to-claim ratios.

As of Friday's card at Aqueduct, open claiming races will now be contested at the following purse values:

Live racing resumes Friday at Aqueduct with a post time of 12:50 p.m. ET. BH

MORE PAIN BEFORE GAIN IN PRIZE-MONEY DISPUTE WITH ARCBy Bruce Jackson and Jack Haynes/Racing Post

Racing and punters face a few more days of dis-ruption in terms of field sizes despite the tempo-

rary truce announced March 2 between Arena Racing Company and the National Trainers Federation amid prize-money wrangles.

ARC has committed to unlocking levy board funding for all eligible races for March. But while the racecourse group said the cost of this unlocking will not be deducted from elsewhere within its race program, the fact the sum will be reduced by £55,000 (US$72,589) to reflect the unsupported races at Lingfield and Sedgefield has riled individual trainers, even though the NTF agreed to the move.

Lingfield and Fontwell on Wednesday had been targeted as the dispute escalated over ARC's reductions

in prize-money contributions, ahead of anticipated betting-shop closures and a decline in media-rights income when FOBT stakes are reduced to £2 from April.

After the truce was brokered, the British Horseracing Authority moved quickly to reopen entries for Lingfield and Newcastle Friday until 11 a.m. Sunday, leading to a few more entries but still the prospect of substandard fields.

The BHA was unable to do the same for the two ARC meetings Wednesday as entries had been published, unlike the reopened races that had not filled on Friday's cards.

A meeting with racecourses and horsemen has been scheduled for Tuesday by the BHA to address the impending impact on media rights funding generally, with only four weeks to thrash out a way forward before the April 1 cut in FOBT stakes.

"Last night's agreement with the NTF was made in good faith with the aim of allowing further time to continue discussions between all parties concerned," an ARC spokesman said Sunday. "The NTF are an honorable organization, and we would expect entries, declarations, and jockey bookings as usual, as all class 4, 5, and 6 races on the flat, and 3, 4, and 5 over jumps will be unlocked, while further talks continue."

Trainers including Gary Moore at Fontwell and Mike Murphy and Luke McJannet at Lingfield scratched their entries in support of the planned Wednesday boycott before news of the agreement.

Moore was alone in withdrawing five entries at Fontwell, where he enjoys great success, and said Sunday: "I'm supporting the boycott—cutting off my nose to spite my face—and hoping some good will come of it.

"I've done it twice before, and this will be the last time if nothing comes out of it."

Murphy, who has taken Dusty Damsel out of the novice race at Lingfield Wednesday, to leave only two possibles to be declared Monday, remains upset about ARC withholding £55,000 as part of the truce.

"I'm still unhappy with ARC. They appear to have imposed a £55,000 fine on the racing fraternity in the temporary prize-money agreement," the trainer said. "In the last couple of years, I've been increasingly trying to avoid ARC tracks because I'm uncomfortable

with them controlling 40% of the fixture list. I don't think that percentage in the power of one group would be tolerated in most other industries."

McJannet, who withdrew Mr Zoom Zoom from the same race, said: "We wanted to run, as he would have gone there with a winning chance, but we all have to stand together with this as the cut in prize money is absolutely disgusting. Everyone in Newmarket is sticking together, and we just want the situation to be resolved, as prize money is a joke. Nobody has been pressured into pulling horses out."

Kim Bailey, another trainer watching developments closely, said: "It's always important the negotiations are doing something, but where it ends in the long run is a different ballgame. It's been an interesting time watching what's going on—it's a game of poker, like all politics. I definitely support the boycotts—we're a body and we're behind it. We had a horse entered at Sedgefield last week but didn't run because of prize money. I'm sure it will resolve itself."

Former champion jockey Peter Scudamore welcomed developments but feels there is much more to achieve, especially with racing in the north.

"It looks as if peace might break out now, with ARC putting more prize money in, so the boycotting seems to have worked," Scudamore said. "We need more prize money. As my son (trainer) Michael said yesterday, 70% of horses are rated below 105. It's difficult. People are paying huge amounts of money for horses these days, and they're never going to get it back."

MYSTIC JOURNEY CREATES HISTORY IN AUSTRALIAN GUINEASBy Tim Rowe/ANZ Bloodstock News

Connections of Australian Guineas (G1) winner Mystic Journey could be des-

tined for another huge payday in the $5 million All-Star Mile after she became the first Tasmanian-trained filly to win a race at the highest level.

The star Adam Trinder-trained Mystic Journey, the first horse prepared in the Apple Isle to win at the group 1 level since the introduction of the group system in the late 1970s, will take on older horses in the Flemington feature on her next start March 16.

But Trinder, a former jumps jockey who trains at Devonport's Spreyton Racecourse in Tasmania's north, was focusing on the enormity of his star filly's success in the March 2 race.

"It's a group 1—they don't come any bigger," Trinder said. "She's a fantastic filly, which makes our assignment a lot easier.

"The team at home do a fantastic job with these horses, and it's good to be able to showcase it on the main stage. We didn't think she was a group 1 filly in the spring, but we trusted come the autumn, once she strengthened up, she would be. Thankfully, we were right."

Mystic Journey defeated Hawkshot by 2 1/4 lengths, with a long neck back to Amphitrite in third.

She is expected to gain a wild-card entry into the inaugural running of the 14-horse All-Star Mile this month. Bred by Victoria's Ralph Zito, Mystic Journey was purchased from the 2017 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale for AU$11,000 (US$8,481) from the Armidale Stud draft by Trinder for owner Wayne Rosser.

"We bought her and thought she was a lovely cheap little filly that would go out and do a job for us," Trinder said. "Not in our wildest dreams did we think that job would be a group 1."

Mystic Journey, who had won two lead-up starts in her home state, was ridden by low-profile jockey Anthony Darmanin, who is based in Victoria but rides regularly in Tasmania.

For Darmanin, 36, the win was also his first at the group 1 level.

"It's just amazing," he said. "I never thought I would ever ride in a group 1, let alone win one.

"She was a bit timid in the field, but once she went past the second horse, she just found another gear, and it was easy on the line."

Darmanin was later suspended for eight meetings for breaching the whip rules. Mystic Journey took her record to nine wins from 13 starts, and Saturday's first prize of AU$600,000 took her earnings to AU$1,012,600.

The first group 1 winner for her Tasmania-based sire, Needs Further, who stands at Armidale Stud, Mystic Journey is one of three winners for White Gold, herself victorious on two occasions and a sister to the stakes-placed Oronero.

Mystic Journey is also a half sister to Oh So Gold, the dam of listed winner Mystical Pursuit. Needs Further, who stood for a 2018 fee of AU$5,500, is the sire of three stakes winners and five stakes-performing horses.
