He was the first gospel preacher I was ever exposed to. He taught me the basics of the gospel, and he later baptized me into Christ. If you know Brother Jerrie, you know he is unique; you might even say a bit peculiar. Often he has a way of looking at things that, on the surface, seems weird but, ultimately, is extremely wise. One of the things he told me recently as I spoke with him about my departure from Pulaski Street was to make sure I have a good funeral when I leave. He went on to explain that, in a way, my leaving is a death – the death of my position or role here as your preacher. He went on to encourage me to remember that there are five basic tasks or acts of dying. I want to briefly express my thoughts about these five tasks. The first task of dying is saying “Forgive me.” I know that in my time here, I have not been or done all that I could have. There are many things I failed to do or failed to do effectively. I’m sure there are many occasions where I disappointed people or didn’t live up to certain expectations. Maybe there are things I inadvertently did to offend someone or hurt their feelings in some way. That being the case, I ask for your forgiveness. The second task of dying is saying “I forgive you.” I am not mad at anyone here. I feel confident that I do not harbor any unforgiveness in my heart toward anyone. I leave here with no grudges, ill will, hurt feelings, or bitterness. The third task of dying is saying “I love you.” I do sincerely love the people here at Pulaski Street. I may not say it enough or express it very well at times, but I love the brethren here very much. I know for you it is sad to see us go, and I hope you know the feeling is mutual. I assure you that our decision to accept another work is not because of a lack of love for the brethren here. The fourth task of dying is saying “Thank you.” I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as your minister. It has been an honor to share in your lives, to be there when your children were born, perform your wedding ceremonies, speak at the funerals of your loved ones, visit with you when you were sick, and to laugh with you and to cry with you. The fifth and final act of dying is saying “Goodbye.” With all due respect to Brother Jerrie, I don’t really like this one. Although it is necessary to do, I’d rather just say “See you later.” May God bless the Lord’s church here at Pulaski Street!
