You Need These 7 Things to Make This Lent Your Holiest Lent Yet (Part 1) By: Chloe Langer The beginning of Lent is almost upon us. And while it may seem that you just took down your Christmas tree, before you know it, it will be Ash Wednesday. Lent is time for prayer, fasting and alms-giving. It’s time to take a look at how we’re doing spiritually and make changes so that we can grow closer to God. But that can be a hard task to go at alone. Want to make this your holiest Lent ever? Father William Casey’s latest book, Making a Holy Lent can help tackle areas in our life where we need to grow.

1. Prayer

During Lent, the Catholic Church invites us to strengthen our relationship with God through prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. Father

Casey focuses on prayer for the first mediation of his Lenten retreat. “I’ve compiled this book – this written retreat – with one pur-

pose in mind,” writes Father Casey, “To challenge you to answer the call that God has given to each and every one of you to be men

and women of faith, prayer, and devotion.” He points to prayer as the answer to our unstable culture, encouraging spiritual revival in

the hearts of Christians everywhere.

2. The Catholic Church

“Wherever I go, I find that more and more Catholics, especially young Catholics, don’t seem to have any idea about what it means to be Catholic,”

Father Casey reflects. “No idea what the Catholic Church is or what She’s about or where She came from, and no idea what sets Her apart from

other religious institutions. This has made younger Catholics, many of whom don’t even know the basics of their Faith, easy prey both for funda-

mentalists sects who peddle simplistic and false interpretations of the Bible and for the secular, materialistic, pagan culture which we live in.”

Father Casey’s reflection begins by discussing the history of the early Catholic Church. He encourages those on retreat to strive to be more like

the Apostles, believing that the Lord will never abandon us, even in times of desolation.

3. Real presence

“If someone were to ask me what I think is the biggest single problem facing the Catholic Church today, I would answer without any hesitation that

it is the widespread loss of faith in Our Lord’s Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament,” Father Casey writes. In this chapter of meditation, he

speaks to the heart of what it means to be Catholic – to believe that Christ is truly present in the sacrament of the Eucharist. He reflects on the

sixth chapter of John, delving into what the words of Christ really mean when He said “this is my body and this is my blood”.

4. Confession

Lent is a time of repentance for the Catholic Church. For the past few weeks, we’ve heard about how John the Baptist prepared the way of the

Lord by urging those around him to straighten the path to their hearts for the Lord to walk upon. For those struggling with going to confession,

Father Casey says that confession is a way we can grow closer to God, know and love God better, and increase our desire for our prayer life.

He urges those making the retreat to pray: “Lord, let there be less of me and more of You. Let me say no to my will and yes to Yours. God, give

me the grace to love You more today than yesterday and more tomorrow than today.”

First Reading: Genesis 9:8-15

God made a promise to Noah that he would never again devastate the entire

planet with a flood. He also told Noah that the symbol of this promise would be

a rainbow in the clouds.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22

This letter from Peter reminds all people that Christ died for us so that we might

be led to God. We have been saved by our baptism; not a physical cleansing, but

a promise to continually strive to obey God.

Gospel: Mark 1:12-15 Mark briefly tells of Jesus’ stay in

the desert, where he was tested by Satan. He did not give in to temptation,

but reappeared in Galilee to proclaim the good news.

Lenten Obligations

So that the Church of Metuchen may be spiritually one in a common observance of Lent, the following days of fast and

abstinence are to be observed by all Catholics of the Diocese who enjoy the blessings of good health:

1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

3. From the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday until the celebration of the Easter Vigil on the evening

of Holy Saturday, the Easter fast should be observed so that, with uplifted and welcoming hearts, we may be ready to

celebrate the joys of the Resurrection. This ancient tradition, intimately connected with the Rites of Holy Week and the

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, is encouraged, especially in those places baptizing catechumens at the Easter

Vigil.

The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to

limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catho-

lics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat. The obligation of

fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be

considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause,

would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to

perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day.

Vespers and Veneration of Relics of the Instruments of the Lord’s Passion

Beginning February, 21st, we will have Vespers and Veneration of Relics followed

by Confessions beginning at 7:00 pm

From after the 9:00 am Mass until 11:00 pm, Monday thru Friday Overnight Adoration takes place Every First Friday of the month until Saturday morning 8:00 am Mass. Every Sunday from 3:00 pm until Monday morning before 7:00 am Mass.

How Can We Be More Attentive to God’s Presence?

For most of us it is difficult to rest in God’s presence without distractions even when we set out with the intention of being before Him in prayer to rest in His peace. We can go through our days and seem to forget God entirely. We must learn that we cannot be with God unless we fight our way into His presence. We must be willing to take on the work of searching for Him.

How do we become more acquainted with God’s presence? We make an effort every day to put aside 15 to 20 minutes to be with just Him. It may mean rising 30 minutes earlier to accomplish this or retreating away for these few minutes from the rest of the family while they are busy with activities. It may be the last minutes of the day before we settle down to rest for the night. Maybe we could drop by church on our way to do errands or after our workday is done. Perhaps it is a short walk around the block to look at the world He has created and delight in the nature we see.

However we arrange this time, we can start by greeting God and letting Him know the next 15 to 20 minutes are just for Him. He’ll be happy to have our full attention. Knowing how long we’ll be with Him helps also. We must do our best to keep the time consistent each day. All these factors help with building any good relationship. They help it flourish. Be delib-erate. We can open our hearts to His love for us and bathe in the knowledge we are “worth more than many sparrows.” We can read a short scripture passage or one of the psalms. We can pray a traditional prayer or sing Him a song. We can thank Him for the time to be still and aware He is there loving us. We can find a holy card or image of Jesus we like and glance into His waiting eyes with love.

Is it really that easy? Yep. When we make an effort to be present to God, He manifests it a thousand-fold. Perhaps our time with God can be in adoration of His Real Presence in the Most Holy Eucharist exposed. He waits for us. Come to Him.

World Day of Consecrated Life

On Saturday, February 3rd, the Sisters of three religious orders who live in Flemington joined Fr. Kenneth Brighenti at the 5:00 pm Mass to celebrate World Day of Consecrated Life.

At any given Mass at St. Magdalen’s, we might see the Dominican Sisters of Divine Providence, the Sisters of

Christian Charity and the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Sisters of Jesus Our Hope, in their royal blue habits, also were a familiar sight prior to their move to Bloomsbury.

Within a mile of the parish is the Carmelite monastery, they are a cloistered order, which means they attend Mass at their monastery, but they were included in Father’s remarks.

Father Brighenti thanked the sisters, saying, “Growing up, the Sisters were like my second mothers. We are blessed to have them as part of our community here at St. Magdalen’s.”

Sr. Faustina and Sr. Marie of the Sisters of Christian Charity brought up the gifts

during Mass, flanked by the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard.

Evangelization

I had a feeling recently that I was missing some-thing. I wasn’t fully appreciating the mercy God offers us through His death on the cross and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I prayed that God would lead me to a deeper understanding and,

more importantly, a more grateful heart. He an-swered my prayers with “A Lent to Remember”.

This four-part video series, available on Formed, is a compilation of interviews with popular Catholic speakers, sharing their personal thoughts about sin, its consequences, and the healing power of

God’s infinite love for us. Their very relatable and understandable explanations have truly prepared

me for a more meaningful Lenten season this year. I have a deeper understanding of what it means to have a priest hear my confession “in persona Chris-ti”; and I look forward to having an encounter with
