For almost two decades Mare Safety has experienced a growing demand in the market for life-saving equipment at sea, as their rescue boats have been sailing worldwide with the “Made in Norway”-brand. The quality that Mare Safety offers has opened the eyes beyond the Norwegian market, and the Asian market is starting to show great interest in their rescue boats.

For those unfamiliar to Mare Safety, their slogan is “A safe choice”. The slogan perfectly reflects the company’s 15 years of continuous focus on outstanding quality. Managing Director, Mr. Reidar Vågeskar has been targeting the “A safe choice” slogan since Mare Safety’s first day of operation back in 1999.

– Mrs. Elin Helland and myself were the founding parties in the establishment of Mare Safety in 1999. In the beginning we focused on galley and safety equipment. After a few years the company acquired a concept with plastic boats that we developed in-house. In 2005 we started a concept of aluminum boats, and this approach has

developed extensively, reaching global attention, says Mr. Vågeskar with a smile.

Asked why this attention from the global market came up, Mr. Vågeskar has the following answer.

– The market finds Mare Safety’s rescue boats – and galley equipment, interesting because we strive to maintain a high level of quality. Our focus is not related to building affordable boats, the cost of rescue boats in the total budget is almost insignificant. We excel in building rescue boats that run smoothly and safely for our customers and end users. Quality is key in the construction process something our clients appreciate. I believe these are the reasons why we during our 15 years of operation now can see a record turnover, says Mr. Vågeskar.

All rescue boats from Mare Safety gets a FAT (Final Acceptance Test) before it is handed over to the customer for operation. Certifications from DNV GL are necessary to give proof that it has fulfilled the requirements given in NORSOK R-002 2nd Edition of 2012. NORSOK is a recognized standard for safety at sea.

For Mr. Vågeskar the future of Mare Safety looks promising. He further states that competition in the market is fair, and that Mare Safety will continue with high quality galleys, safety equipment and rescue boats.

– We are looking forward to present and release new models, alternatively a shorter and a longer version than we offer today.

Boats for aquaculture and wind power industries are markets were we see a need for new thinking. The future may bring exciting things under the auspices of Mare Safety, and we will focus more globally on galleys and galley equipment. As the growth in the Asian market has shown, there are many European ship owners who know what qualities we stand for, and this has been transmitted to these new markets. We have every reason to keep the course we maintain today, says Mr. Vågeskar closing.

Mare Safety is located at Borgstein in Ulsteinvik on the west coast of Norway. The company has 18 employees working fulltime with rescue boats, safety equipment and galleys.

In the middle of the maritime cluster’s heart in Sunnmøre, Ulsteinvik, you find Mare Safety. A rescue equipment supplier which proudly look back at 15 exciting years – and an even more exciting future.

On ships and offshore installations, salt water, rainwater and fresh water collects particles, chemicals, oils, mud, soaps etc.

”Contaminated water occupy significant areas offshore where space is an expensive and scarce factor”, says Dag Moxnes, CEO of GEA Westfalia Separator Nordic AS.

MariTiMe secTorIn Norway, the company has much business within the maritime, oil&gas and fisheries sectors.

”It is expensive and not good environmental policy to send waste water and waste oil to land by ship. In addition, contaminated sources are mixed, which is the opposite of the intention”, Moxnes says.

GEA Westfalia can deliver complete solutions or build separators into the customer’s existing system.

waTer overBoardSales Manager Oil&Gas Runar Olsen states: ”After the separation process, water can go overboard or be reused. Oil can be processed or shipped to shore in a much smaller volume than contaminated water would constitute.”

In many cases, operators engage vessels for the sole purpose of contaminated water and oil transport. Many are unaware of the separator technology, the small space required and that efficient separation occurs even when ships and rigs roll in heavy weather, often with no need to add chemicals to achieve the required cleaning efficiency.

reliaBle suPPlierFor nearly 100 years, GEA Westfalia has been known as a reliable supplier of oil separators for engine rooms. This has made it easy for the company to establish itself in water and oil separation for the past 10 years, after the IMO introduced strict regulations.

In the face of unrelenting competitive pressure, the need for streamlining of engineering and manufacturing is essential for survival, not to mention profitability. Cad-Q has successfully demonstrated their application of Lean Engineering as a leading tool for staying ahead of the competition. For the benefit of owners, customers and employees, Lean Engineering contributes significant improvements, where many see few options.

Cad-Q Lean Engineering is a concept for increasing operating efficiency in engineering departments, consultancies and manufacturing. These are increasingly challenged by low cost operations in other parts of the world. There are few engineering and manufacturing organizations, if any, where increasing efficiency is not on the top of the agenda.

More efficienT“To compete with relatively high levels of cost, engineering and manufacturing operations have to be more innovative and efficient. Provided that all employees are dedicated to the task, Lean Engineering can contribute with big improvements”, says Anders Mellingen, business area manager in Cad-Q Norway.

Lean Engineering is about new ways of working, usually in conjunction with computer tools, to facilitate change. The competitive world will never stop developing, therefore Lean Engineering needs to be a continuous process – although with varying intensity in each company.

a MaTTer of ProfiTaBiliTY“Business management is often faced with efficiency demands from the board or owners. Common goals are increased production from existing resources, or strengthened profitability. In either case, in their role as independent external assessors, our consultants undertake a thorough review of the situation. We present specific operational changes that produce

immediate effect!” Mellingen explains. The Cad-Q industrial reference list includes engineering companies,

manufacturing companies and mechanical workshops mainly within the energy and industrial sectors. Cad-Q has a strong background for supporting Lean Engineering in Northern Europe. They are

the Autodesk premier partner in the European market, and supply a number of related IT systems for efficient design, manufacture and operations.

develoP furTHer “We suggest ways to streamline workflows and propose IT tools that can contribute to increased efficiency. Better ways to use existing tools, safeguarding experiences and knowledge, PLM solutions that provide new market opportunities, and automation of processes are key Cad-Q contributions. Sovelia, our own PLM solution, makes a big difference in the enhancement of information sharing. Many will be surprised about how much process automation can contribute to efficiency and customer experience”, Mellingen concludes.

Preparing for growth Rapp Bomek supplies fire rated doors for worldwide offshore installations. Their new owners have ambitious plans for growth.

”To grow and win new contracts as a Norwegian manufacturer, cost effectiveness and delivery precision is crucial. Therefore, we conduct an extensive Lean Production and Lean Engineering process,” says Kristoffer Lundseng, Technical

Manager. As an element in the company’s lean process, a new production

line is under construction. Cad-Q Norway contributes by streamlining the engineering department tasks with special focus on an automatic Engineer To Order solution.

“Cad-Q helps with engineering and production preparation automation. So far we are on track to achieve drastic reduction in engineering time for CAD related work. This will influence positively on our total costs and in turn our competitiveness,” Lundseng says.

This experience is combined with a strategic involvement in research and development projects, both in-house and in cooperation with other major research organizations, like NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the University Courses on Spitsbergen (UNIS) and Sintef.

The coast of Norway is characterized by a complex bathymetry, islands, reefs, sub sea cliffs and steep shore slopes. This gives challenges in assessment of wave state and wave propagation and impact of waves on structures. The Barents Sea presents a transition zone to ice covered areas in the European Arctic. The Eastern part is characterized by yearly presence of first year sea ice, occasionally multi-year ice

and icebergs. The western part of the Barents Sea is ice free and poses Arctic challenges such as sea spray icing, in combination with severe wind and waves. Further east and north, the Kara Sea and Arctic Ocean present challenges related to extreme cold climate and the presence of severe ice conditions, with multi-year ice, and icebergs. Multiconsult has in general an extensive experience in costal and offshore infrastructure. In particular this includes specialized experi ence in cold climate and Arctic engineering and design. Our experience ranges from assessing the design physical environment, planning and logistics, onshore infrastructure, harbours and sea front structures, fixed and floating structures near shore and offshore, and includes infrastructure design and ice in ice coved waters.

Designed from the ground up to be completely self-sustained, the Pixel building has attracted the likes of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on their hunt for green technology to build a better future.

By combining solar and wind power, the building produces more electricity than it uses. Rain water is collected and purified. Even the need for cooling has been reduced, by using the building’s characteristic coloured panels to keep solar heat out. But in order to achieve the sought-after perfect score of 100 points on the Australian Green Star environmental rating system for buildings, this was not enough.

The architects soon realized they also needed to reduce the large amounts of water commonly used to flush toilets. After scouring the world for a reliable, water-saving toilet solution, the architects found what they needed more than 10,000 miles away - in the heart of Norway’s maritime community. “We knew right away that we had the solution. Our vacuum toilet systems use less than 1 liter of water per flush, or about ¼ gallon, and reduce water consumption by 80-90% compared to normal toilets. With a client list ranging from small homes to cruise ships, we were able to demonstrate a track record of unsurpassed reliability to the building’s designers” says CEO Jan Tore Leikanger of Jets Vacuum AS.

Global growth is rapidly increasing the demand for energy and safe water supplies around the world, and Leikanger believes that vacuum toilet systems may hold the key to some of the

challenges that lie ahead. “Vacuum toilets are very common on ships, and have been so for decades. And while the maritime customers are still our bread and butter, there is an awakening in countries world-wide now. People realize that safe water is in limited supply onshore too. New ways are needed to reduce water and energy consumption, and our products do just that – day in and day out” Leikanger points out.

The Pixel building shows us what the future holds. Although originally developed for use at sea, buildings throughout the world now use vacuum toilets. From the warmth of Australia to the freezing Antarctic, more than 16,000 Jets systems save enormous amounts of water every single day.

The groundbreaking Pixel office building in Melbourne, Australia, proves that a viable, sustainable future is possible - with vacuum toilets originally developed for ships.

» Jets Vacuum As has supplied the world’s leading maritime sanitary technology for more than 25 years.

» The products are also being used onshore with great success, in buildings, event toilets, and more.

» The company has sold more than 300,000 vacuum toilets globally, and currently supplies 30,000 every year.

» It has subsidiaries in Latvia, china and Germany.

”We supply innovative torque and tension tools of all kinds. Equally important is that we provide service tools, rental equipment and training. Also, our organization is well tuned to handle rush orders. Very often, speed is crucial when fasteners in mission-critical applications needs tightening”, says Anders Rydberg, at Hytorc Norway.

MainTenanceNuts and bolts are virtually everywhere. Perhaps they are a bit like copy machines – when out of order you notice your dependence.

The right torque tools make the job accurately, quickly, verifiable, permanent, and most importantly; safe.

”However, even well tightened fasteners can loosen, as time goes by or when they are wrongly dimensioned or part of vibrating structures. Our staff has extensive on site experience. Often, they will be familiar with customer installations and on the telephone can guide service personnel through challenging maintenance tasks,” Rydberg says.

MulTi PurPosesFor the man in the street, bolt tightening can seem pretty straightforward. You grab a bolt and a nut, and tighten until it stops. But in the mechanical world, operations are not that simple.

Everywhere there are bolts and connections to be tightened with the proper torque technic: Offshore installations, bridges, railways, excavators; you name it.

“It’s extremely important to understand that bolts must be tightened correctly, with the correct lubrication. You have to know how much torque/tension a bolt can withstand in various situations,” explains Rydberg.

can deforM or riP offIn that manner, elasticity is a key expression. Rydberg compares with filling a carrier bag with three one liter milk containers. The bag handles are elastic and

yielding, but will hardly change shape. On the other hand, the handles would not regain their old shape if the bag was filled with 10 liters of weight.

”The same will happen with bolts. Bolts can deform or even rip off. This can be

critical for an entire construction and create costly delays in building processes or production shutdowns, and even cause injuries,” he says.

Lack of force (not enough torque / load) might lead to similar consequences.

The chain required had a diameter of 133 mm, with massive links that were 200 kgs each. It was not easy to locate and apparently, SOTRA was the only company in the world with an existing stock of this chain that could mobilize within short notice. In total, 1000 metres of this chain were shipped in 40 containers, with a weight of 400 tonnes in total to be used for the salvage of the giant cruise ship. The ship was successfully salvaged by TITAN Salvage during summer 2013.

“This is not the largest chain that has been supplied by SOTRA”, said Jan Vindenes, the General Manager of SOTRA, as he pointed out that the company has recently supplied chain with a diameter of 172 mm and a weight of 450 kgs per link for the ALLSEAS pipe laying vessel, “Pieter Schelte”. With a length of 382 metres and width of 124 metres, the ship is being built at DSME Shipyard in Busan, Korea. “It was our China branch that won that contract, based on the confidence and experience that the shipowner has had with deliveries from SOTRA. The Chinese production process was not allowed without the contributions of a well know supplier with a quality assurance program and experience in 3rd party inspection”, said Mr. Vindenes.

So, does SOTRA mainly focus on big size anchors and chains? “No, we also supply smaller sizes”, answered Nicolai Malmo, SOTRA’s Sales Executive. “We supply all sizes suitable for the smallest rowing boats up to the largest super tankers. Our customers are fishing boats, tankers, freight ships, tall ships,

oil rigs, aqua farms, dry docks, small and large yachts and shipyards. A rough calculation tells us that we have 10,000 tonnes of anchors, chains, shackles,

swivels, etc. in stock”, and continued, “This is located at our yards in Norway, Netherlands, China and Scotland.”

“It has not always been like this”, commented Mr Vindenes. “It was my father, Jarle Vindenes, that established the company in 1980 as

a specialised enterprise handling surplus equipment from the oil industry in Norway. He started with two bare hands and a big mortgage. The first year, he only had a handful of staff.

The company has since grown, and today

the SOTRA GROUP has its own mechanical workshops

and property in Norway. As a

subsidiary of the SOTRA GROUP,

SOTRA ANCHOR & CHAIN has expanded to become

a world-wide player within

its industry.”

“Among our many deliveries, one of the

most special ones was the supply of an anchor for the royal family in Norway. It was an old-fashioned stock anchor to be used as

a decoration at their summer house that was given to them as a gift on their 25th wedding anniversary from the Royal Norwegian Navy”, said Mr Vindenes.

“If airplanes used anchors and chains, SOTRA would supply these also”, continued Mr. Vindenes…

SOTRA ANCHOR & CHAIN became famous overnight in March of last year when it hit the news that that the company had won the contract to supply chain for the M/V “Costa Concordia” salvage operation at Isola del Giglio in Italy.

Norwegian offshore equipment is known for excellent quality and performance. Since the equipment can be accompanied by competitive financing from Export Credit Norway, the whole becomes even better. The company’s primary goal is to promote Norwegian exports by providing competitive, accessible and effective financing, in both good times and bad.

Every day, Norwegian companies fight for contracts on the international market. A part of what they can offer is financing in collaboration with Export Credit Norway.

”In 2013, we disbursed export loans for more than NOK 22 billion related to Norwegian export contracts,” says CEO Jarle Roth.

”GIEK and Export Credit Norway pose the Norwegian export credit scheme to increase international trade,” he states.

coMPleMenTarY financinGHe stresses that the Export Credit Norway financing services are complementary to traditional financing and that the company emphasizes collaboration with both Norwegian and international banks.

Loans for ships and ship equipment

constitute 68 percent of the company’s total outstanding loans. 31 percent is granted for equipment to the oil and gas industry equipment and 1 percent is for financing of domestic industry.

”Worldwide, Norway is a major player within the offshore- and maritime sector. This is also reflected in our portfolio,” says Roth.

NOK 650 million is the average loan size to projects related to oil and gas industry. Due to industry and export contract size, the domestic industry average loan is NOK 10 million.

”We work side by side with the Norwegian export industry. In fulfilling our societal role, we are able to invest the same level of resources for a loan of NOK 10 million as one of NOK 650 million. We hold our doors open both for new and well known business partners”.
