r Kgs r9:r6b, :g-z:- I Gal 5:r, r3-r8 / Lk 9:5r-62

When our eight-month-old daughter began to crawl, it quickly became

evident that we needed to teach her the meaning of the word no. She was

drawn to all the things she shouldn't touch-computers, electrical outlets,

hot liquids. However, in response to our.firm "No!," she smiled and giggled.

Not exactly what we were hoping for. lt took a while for her to learn the

meaning of no and that she had some restrictions on her newfound

freedom.I recalled my daughter's amused reaction to "No./"when I read Saint Paul's

warning against "biting and devouring one another" in his letter to the

Galatians. He was speaking of unethical behavior among the Galatian

community-gossip, backbiting, cheating. Clearly, God had said no to these

behaviors long ago, but the Galatians continued to exhibit them-kind of

like laughing in God's face.

Saint Paul reminds them that in Christ they do have freedom, but it's not

unbridled. This freedom comes with responsibilities-a commitment to love

and serve one another rather than treat each other immorally and

unethically. This week we celebrate our country's gift of freedom.

But the freedom we enjoy through Jesus is deeper' lt's freedom from sin and

death, and it isn't restriction free.

It comes with the responsibility to work for the good of others with love.

It's a full-time, wholehearted commitment, as Jesus notes in today's Gospel.

It's less about hearing notrom the Lord and more about sayingyesto what

God asks of us-in gratitude for such a great gift.la nel Esker su n daybu lleti n @ li gu ori. org

de ar PAD Rf,

O Where does Church teaching on angels come from?WLrcre did we get thrir diuision into classes and thc

concept of thc guardian angel?

Tlne Catechism of the Catholic Church states that theexistence of angels is "a truth of faith" known in bothScripture and Tradition (328). Here is an ancientdefinition: An angel is a mighty, concentratedpersonality standing in God's presence, ready to dohis bidding instantly.

Jesus famously speaks of what we take to be theguardian angels of children. He says the angels ofthese children always look on the face of God (see

Matthew 18:10). Angels took care of Jesus (see

Matthew 4:2).

The Church understands angels to be spirits. Angel

means "messenger," and angels are servants of God.

Different classes of angels are mentioned in the Bible(for example, Ephesians 1:21 and 3:10, Colossians1:16, Revelation 11:16). We speak of Michael,Raphael, and Gabriel as archtngels, because the jobsGod gave them to do were so important.

The Church holds that Satan is a fallen angel (CCC391). Jesus tells us Satan "'was a murderer from thebeginning and does not stand in truth, because thereis no truth in him" (John B:44).
