It was a Saturday. July 4, 1998. My first experience of the celebrations that marked American Independence Day. I was in this country for just eight weeks doing mission appeals on the east coast. I was stationed in a parish in College Point, New York, not far from La Guardia airport. Every weekend I was in a different parish preaching. On that July 4th weekend, I was to preach at St. John the Baptist parish in Brooklyn. I took the bus and made my way to the parish. As I walked from the bus stop to the Rectory, I heard loud music blaring from a boom box and people gathered around food, kids playing, and thought to myself ‘Oh! This must be another facet of the American lifestyle’.

The Pastor welcomed me and informed me that after the 5 p.m. mass, we would go up to the terrace of the building and would have a barbeque and watch the Macy’s fireworks. There was an excitement in his voice about the word barbeque. The word barbeque was foreign to me and I was clueless about its meaning. So after mass, we went up and some of the nuns were cooking meat on coal. And I looked at it and said to myself, “What is all this excitement about cooking on coal? Many in India, cook their food on coal or firewood everyday. What is so special about barbeque? What is so special about the 4th of July”? For most, if I might say, it is about parades, picnics and fireworks. For me, it is about watching the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture. But we all know it should be more than this. It should primarily be about a time for us to really cherish that original dream, the one for which so many have died, to individually and collectively re-declare our independence from tyranny, despotism, taxation without representation, and debts that no free society should ever bear. It is also a time for us to ask ourselves: What are we fighting for now? Is it “freedom from religion,” the necessity to take “under God” out of our pledge, or even to do away with it altogether? Is it the “right” to end the lives of unwanted babies, or the “right” for two men or two women to “marry”? Is it about the undocumented immigrant and a country’s right to regulate its borders and control immigration? And shouldn’t our immigration policy be tempered with justice and mercy as the biblical vision of love for strangers exhorts us to? And can we work together to see that all people have comprehensive, quality health care that is affordable? Or is it still the impossible dream of a nation under God, with unalienable rights endowed equally to all — among these - life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? We welcome back our Pastor, Msgr. Pollard from his sabbatical – a time of work, rest and relaxation and renewed energy to take over the reins of leading the people of God in this parish. It has been an honor and my pleasure to fill these pages with updates on the activities in the parish and some rambling, while he was away. I am grateful to all who have made these last six months for me a time of learning and fun. Gratefully, Fr. Simon Braganza

Summertime and the livin’ is easy…

The familiar song sung by Ella Fitzgerald is true for many of us. Summer takes on a slower pace and va-cations—or staycations—are on the schedule. But for our elderly and ill parishioners, the livin’ isn’t easy in summertime. There is the heat and humidi-ty, which can keep them from outdoor activities of any kind. Close relatives and friends may be away on vacations, so their regular means of transportation may not be available. Coming to Mass on Sunday be-comes impossible. Our Ministers of Care visit the ill and elderly and homebound of our parish every Sunday. They offer prayer, Holy Communion and a visit—all welcome gifts! If you know someone who would benefit from a visit by our Ministers of Care, please encourage them to call the rectory (773-736-6060). We are anxious to connect them to our parish community!

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 72

© Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. John Pollard

Relationships need time to grow and develop. Wisely, many married couples formally set some time aside each week so that they can simply talk to one another. Good friends call one another and arrange to get together regularly. Texts, tweets and instagrams are ok, but there is no substitute for face to face contact when it comes to building a relationship. The same is true for our relationship with God. Jesus is the human face of God. He is the way we come to know the Father and he is the means through which we deepen our understanding of God and nurture our relationship with him. The most productive time we can spend with Jesus is while we are celebrating the great gift he left us as his everlasting memorial, the Mass. In it Christ is present in the gathered assembly, in the person of the priest, in the Word proclaimed and, of course, especially in the Eucharist. The chance to improve our relationship with God is available to us at every Sunday at Mass. We need to give that relationship the face time it needs.

RCIA Inquiry Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

The RCIA is a process for those considering becoming Catholic. Specifically, it is:

For those who are not baptized and are in the process of

making a decision to become Catholic For those who were baptized and are in another faith and are

thinking of becoming Catholic For those who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not

received Eucharist and Confirmation

The process is designed to assist those interested in Catholicism, to learn about our faith, our traditions, and our celebrations. Each person is invited to reflect on his/her own relationship with God and the faith community. We journey through this process together, assisting each other in our response to God’s call. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the RCIA, please call Fr. Simon Braganza at (773) 736-6060, ext. 239 for more information. Classes are on Thursday evenings beginning in September.

There is an initial Meet and Greet for all team members and inquiring adults on Sunday, August 27th after the 11AM Mass. Call for

13th Sunday of Ordinary Time — July 2, 2017

Please consider what we can give back to our parish,

in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us.

“…whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” - MATTHEW 10:38 Pope Benedict XVI said “The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness”. “Comfort” puts me first. “Picking up your cross and following Jesus” puts God and others first. Why settle for comfort when you can achieve greatness! Pick up your cross, ask Jesus for guidance on using your gifts and live the life God intended for you!

Stewardship of Time—Our Recreation Is there such a thing as a stewardship of recreation? Some people might dismiss the thought. But they’d be wrong. Author Thomas Cahill observes that, in receiving the Ten Commandments, the ancient Hebrews did something no other ancient society had ever done: they established a day of rest. The God who made the universe and rested bids us to do the same, calling us to a weekly restoration of prayer, study, and recreation (or re-creation). July is also the month when Americans celebrate the proclamation of our freedom. When the Hebrew people first received the Ten Commandments, they too had just received their freedom from the Egyptians after a sojourn in the wilderness. Cahill thinks it’s no coincidence that a people recently liberated were in need of a directive to rest and reflect. “Leisure,” he writes, “is the necessary ground of creativity, and a free people are free to imitate the creativity of God.” So, the next time you feel guilty about a quiet, reflective time of doing “nothing” remember that recreation also means “re-creation” and that to be a truly creative person, a steward of our interior resources, we must honor our need to rest, relax, be with others, read and play.

Is it time to reconsider our level of support?

We don’t have to look around very far to see the effects of the very un-timely need to replace our Basilica ceiling. Even though we are in the fortunate position to be able to front the costs of this capital project from our reserves, we will need to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their Sunday offering to replenish our reserves in full for the project, which is on top of our already successful capital campaign To Teach Who Christ Is: From Generation to Generation. We anticipate a more formal campaign to focus on our regular Sunday collections in the fall, but want-ed everyone to be aware about this now, and to begin to prayerfully con-sider this matter. Throughout the wonderful history of our parish there has been an uninter-rupted series of very positive responses to calls for support. We know that the challenges we face today will be met with the same success that our predecessors in this parish achieved!

Thank you for all you do for our parish and please know that you are always welcome here!

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
