ENCOUNTER CHRIST THIS LENT THROUGH PRAYER, FASTING AND ALSMGIVING
Every Lent the Church invites to the three traditional practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Although the word almsgiving does not come up much in regular conversation, Catholics hear it plenty during Lent since it is one of the three pillars of the church's Lenten practices along with prayer and fasting.
Although the three practices work together, almsgiving can sometimes get the short shrift because people might be more apt to pray and fast -- in private or at church -- than they might reach out to those in need.
The church defines almsgiving as donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes it as "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." (CCC Part Three #2447)
There is plenty of biblical support for this practice in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus urged his disciples not to brag about helping others saying: "When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet be-fore you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others." (Matthew 6:2)
An Old Testament passage puts almsgiving at the top of the Lenten practices: "Prayer with fasting is good. Almsgiv-ing with righteousness is better than wealth with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold, for almsgiving saves from death, and purges all sin. Those who give alms will enjoy a full life" (Tobit 12:8-9).
Each weekend through Lent is an opportunity to participate in preparing our hearts to give generously. Below is a list of items for an organization we will support by your almsgiving. Please bring to the Saturday and Sunday Mass times, helping us honor our commitment to deliver the items to the organization in a timely manner.
Please PRAY for those who will be distributing and receiving the items. Please FAST by skipping a dinner or lunch or a coffee stop to provide more generously. You will be participating in the three practices of the Catholic faith during Lent with your ALMSGIVING.

Third Sunday of Lent Overconfident? As we get to the halfway point of Lent, we may be tempted to overconfidence: "The first three weeks weren't so hard. I can go a few more weeks without the things I gave up. And I've only committed a few sins; maybe I'll go to confession right before Easter." If so, it might be a good idea to look at the second reading and the Gospel. St. Paul says that anyone who is overconfident about their lack of sin "should take care not to fall" (1 Corinthians 10:12). He compares those peo-ple to the ones Moses brought through the desert. Just because they were God's chosen people and had survived years in the desert doesn't mean they are perfect. In fact, many were punished because they were tempted to follow false gods or to com-plain about the food and drink God provided them. Could the same thing happen to us? One form of overconfidence is rejecting what we learned as children. We may think, "I'm old enough to decide if I should go to church" or "I can take care of myself now; I don't need God's help." Or we may think that holiness is just for priests and religious: "I go to church on Sundays; no need to pray the other days of the week." If these sound familiar because you have thought that way yourself, Paul has a warning. His analogy of the Rock following the He-brews in the desert refers to God's constant pres-ence to the people. In the same way, he is present to us today. A couple of chapters after our second reading Paul says, "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:27). But just as God was not pleased with those in the desert, God may not be pleased with us if we continue to ignore the Lord. That brings us to the Gospel. In the parable of the fig tree, the owner is not pleased--the tree has not produced any fruit. Unlike the fig tree, God would be happy with any fruit we produce. We could be generous to the poor, we could fight for the unborn child's right to life, we could welcome new members to the church, or we could simply teach our children how to pray. But if all we give is one hour a week in church, and ignore God the rest of the time, we need to take heed. Like the owner of the fig tree, God is patient, but we only have so much time. So when do you plan to bear fruit? Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Business Owners, Presidents, CEOs, Manag-ing Directors/Partners An Invitation for you from the Orange Canyons Chapter of Legatus
If you are (or were) a business owner, CEO, President, Managing Director or Managing Partner of a company, we invite you to learn about our Legatus Orange Canyons Chapter.
Legatus is an international organization of Catholic leaders who seek to exercise faithful leadership in the business world by being am-bassadors of Christian ethics, values, and worldview.
Legatus members are formed to be Christian ambassadors through a monthly celebration of a meal and Sacraments – Confession and Eucharist, and through relationships deep-ened in small group Forums
and by social events throughout the year. And as an old saying goes, behind most every successful business person there is a spouse, and spouses also participate fully and actively.
Legatus membership encourages much more depth than a professional organization or networking group. It’s about living a Catholic life as a business leader in the world.
For more information, please visit www.legatus.org or better yet, feel free to contact Chad Olberding (310-210-3561) or Dan Domier (949-887-8814) to hear first-hand about being a member of Legatus.
There will also be an informal initial meet and greet on April 5, 2019 at Fr. Reynold’s house. Please call Chad or Dan about an ex-act time and address.
