GOSPEL MEDITATION 3rd Sunday of Lent—March 15, 2020

WHAT RELIGION ARE YOU? Jeroboam realized that religion is part of human

nature. Therefore, human beings must be reli-gious. The only question is: "Will we be committed to the only true religion, Judaism fulfilled in the Church, or will we be involved in some of the many thousands of false religions?" Some think they have proven Jeroboam wrong: they say they don't need religion. However, they end up replac-ing God with themselves or an idea such as social-ism or secular humanism. Then they religiously follow their "anti-religion." God constantly calls us away from false religions

to "worship the Father in Spirit and truth. Indeed, it is just such worshipers the Father seeks" (Jn 4:23). The writer of the book of James summariz-es the old covenant's delineation of true religion: Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world (see Jas 1:27, RNAB). Even with these clarifications, hu-man beings tend to be deceived about religion. So God the Father sent Jesus, fully man and fully God. Now we know the only Way to which our religious

aspirations should be directed. Now we know the Way to the true, religious life (see Jn 14:6). Prayer: Father, free me from false religions. Give

me Your pure, true religion in Christ. -Republish with permission from One Bread, One

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

25 Years of the Gospel of Life

This year the Church celebrates the 25th anniversary of the papal encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life). This prophetic document was written by Pope John Paul II to reaffirm the value and invio-lability of every human life and to appeal to all people to respect, protect, love, and serve every human life.

The Gospel of Life is at the heart of Je-sus’ saving message to the world. Through the Incarnation and birth of Christ, God re-veals to us the dignity of all human life. The Son of God has united himself with every human being and desires for us to share eternal life with him. For this reason, direct attacks on human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, are always unacceptable. Yet, sadly we see new and expanding threats to human life emerging on an alarming scale. These new threats to life are often justified, protected, and even promoted by our laws and culture.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Be aware of poison dan-

gers in the home

More than 90% of all poi-sonings happen in homes. Parents should know the top risks for children (especially children who still put things in their mouths!) and work to eradicate them. Lead poi-soning is high on the list,

especially for older homes with lead paint or dust. Button batteries are small and shiny and lurk in many toys and electronics that litter our homes. Swallowing these can be deadly for children. The same is true of household cleaners like laundry or dishwasher detergent pods. For more information, visit https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/safety-topics/other-poisons.

¿SABIA USTED?

OFFICE OF WORSHIP Winter Cold and Flu Season

This flu season and to aid in limiting the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), all are reminded to use good hygiene and the usual common-sense practices used during the cold and flu season. If you are feeling ill, you are not obliged to attend Mass and should stay home. For those who are not able to attend due to illness, Sunday Mass is livestreamed in English and Spanish from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels via Facebook https://www.facebook.com/lacatholics/, @lacatholics. The following accommodations have been recommended by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles until such time as the coronavirus is no longer a threat: that the faithful receive Holy Communion on the hand and not on the tongue; the use of the cup be suspended; and all are asked to refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace or during the recitation of the Lord’s prayer. A smile and a heartfelt, “Peace be with you,” can serve as the sign of peace. During the recitation of the Lord’s prayer, you are invited to assume the orans position. That is the raising of the hands and eyes toward heaven as a gesture acknowledging our sole reliance on God. Please remember that refraining from participation in the liturgy or the sign of peace is out of care for our wellbeing and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety. Please continue to pray for all who are ill and those who are providing care for them.
