Opening Hymn

We sing our opening hymn:

And can it be, that I should gain v.1,3,5

TIS209 CAL 293

Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Page 10: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

And can it be, that I should gain

1. And can it be, that I should gain

An interest in the Saviour’s blood?

Died He for me, who caused His pain;

For me, who Him to death pursued?

Amazing love! how can it be

That You, my God, should die for me?

Page 11: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

And can it be, that I should gain

3. He left His Father’s throne above -

So free, so infinite His grace -

Emptied Himself of all but love,

And bled for Adam’s helpless race:

'Tis mercy all, immense and free;

For, O my God, it found out me!

Page 12: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

And can it be, that I should gain

5. No condemnation now I dread:

Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!

Alive in Him, my living head,

And clothed in righteousness divine,

Bold I approach the eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Acts 9:1-20

"I am Jesus," the Lord answered. "I am the one you are so cruel to. 6Now

get up and go into the city, where you will be told what to do."

7The men with Saul stood there speechless. They had heard the voice, but they had not seen anyone.

Acts 9:1-20

10A follower named Ananias lived in Damascus, and the Lord spoke to him in a vision. Ananias answered, "Lord, here I am." 11The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the house of Judas on Straight Street. When you get there, you will find a man named Saul from the city of Tarsus.

He wants you to be able to see and to be filled with the Holy Spirit." 18Suddenly something like fish scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see.

John 21:1-19 CEV

Jesus and the miraculous catch of fish; words to Peter

M: The holy gospel is written in chapter 21 of the Gospel according to St John, beginning at verse 1.

C: ♫ Glory to you, O Lord.

John 21:1-19

Jesus later appeared to his disciples along the shore of Lake Tiberias. 2Simon Peter, Thomas the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, and the brothers James and John, were there, together with two other disciples.

Page 53: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

3Simon Peter said, "I'm going fishing!" The others said, "We will go with you." They went out in their boat. But they didn't catch a thing that night. 4Early the next morning Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize who he was. 5Jesus shouted, "Friends, have you caught anything?"

"No!" they answered.

Page 54: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

So he told them, "Let your net down on the right side of your boat, and you will catch some fish."

They did, and the net was so full of fish that they could not drag it up into the boat. 7Jesus' favourite disciple told Peter, "It's the Lord!”

Page 55: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

When Simon heard that it was the Lord, he put on the clothes that he had taken off while he was working. Then he jumped into the water. 8The boat was only about a hundred yards from shore. So the other disciples stayed in the boat and dragged in the net full of fish.

Page 56: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

9When the disciples got out of the boat, they saw some bread and a charcoal fire with fish on it. 10Jesus told his disciples "Bring some of the fish you just caught."

11Simon Peter got back into the boat and dragged the net to shore. In it were one hundred fifty-three large fish, but still the net did not rip.

Page 57: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

12Jesus said, "Come and eat!" But none of the disciples dared ask who he was. They knew he was the Lord. 13Jesus took the bread in his hands and gave some of it to his disciples. He did the same with the fish. 14This was the third time that Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from death.

Page 58: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

15When Jesus and his disciples had finished eating, he asked, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than the others do?"

Simon Peter answered, "Yes, Lord, you know I do!“

"Then feed my lambs," Jesus said.

Page 59: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

John 21:1-19

16Jesus asked a second time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter answered, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you!"

"Then take care of my sheep," Jesus told him.

John 21:1-19

17Jesus asked a third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus had asked him three times if he loved him.

So he told Jesus, "Lord, you know everything. You know I love you."

Jesus replied, "Feed my sheep.

John 21:1-19

18I tell you for certain that when you were a young man, you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will hold out your hands.

Then others will wrap your belt around you and lead you where you don't want to go.”

You Servants of God

1. You servants of God, your Master proclaim,

And publish abroad His wonderful name;

The name all-victorious of Jesus extol:

His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

Page 78: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

You Servants of God

2. God ruleth on high, almighty to save;

And still He is near: His presence we have.

The great congregation His triumph shall sing,

Ascribing salvation to Jesus our king.

Page 79: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

You Servants of God

3. Salvation to God who sits on the throne!

Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son,

The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,

Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

You Servants of God

All glory and power, all wisdom and might,

All honour and blessing, with angels above,

And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love. †

117

Let us ever walk with Jesus

1. Let us always walk with Jesus, follow his example pure, flee the world that would deceive us,in temptation's hour endure.Always in his footsteps treading, living here, yet hearts above, full of faith and hope and love, let us do the Father's bidding.Faithful Jesus, stay with me;I will follow where you lead.

Page 118: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 14th April, 2013 1. 2 The Service – Alternative Form From Supplement to the Lutheran Hymnal Page 58.

118

Let us ever walk with Jesus

3. Let us also die with Jesus, who by death has conquered death;from eternal doom he frees us,gives our souls new life and faith.Let us fight, while life is given, sin that would again enslave;and the dark and dreaded gravewill be then the gate to heaven.Loving Lord, in you I die;let me live with you on high.

119

Let us ever walk with Jesus

4. Let us gladly live with Jesus, who has risen from the dead;death and grave must soon release us,as they yielded up our Head. Each of us is your own member;where you live, Lord, we live too,we, true Friend, belong to you;call us, then, your friends forever.I am yours; Lord, let me bewith you through eternity. †
