Thin Line Film Fest 2013Texas Filmmakers’ documentary film festival

happy bunch,” Martin said.“And this isn’t your typicalfilm about winning or losing. This is about a team and thesegirls.”

Framed by the rigors anddiscipline of soccer deliveredby “Coach Walt,” the filmexamines girls who face enor-mous limitations but don’taccept them.

Three teams make up theMonarchs. Stewart, who gaveup a position at a Philadelphialaw firm to teach and coachthe Monarchs, has highexpectations of his players. Inturn, the film depicts playerswho expect as much — andmaybe more — from them-selves.

“This film isn’t really aboutsoccer,” Martin said. “It’s real-ly about caring about ourdaughters, because our girlsare under a lot of pressure tobe a certain way and to look acertain way.”

As he studied the Mon-archs, Martin said he made adiscovery.

“Playing soccer does anenormous amount of good forthese girls’ self-confidence,” hesaid. “With the Monarchs, they aren’t just learning howto play a good game of soccer, they are learning leadership. What we’ve seen is that asthey do better in soccer, theydo better in school.”

One of the agreements theplayers make is that they can’tcome to the practice field ifthey have bad grades.

“They have practice threetimes a week, so the girls haveto be able to organize theirschoolwork — and anythingelse they do, really — aroundthat schedule,” Martin said.

When he began working onthe documentary, the Ander-son Monarchs were the onlyall-black girls select soccerteam in the United States. The team’s success influencedthe U.S. Soccer Foundation.Martin said the foundation isnow focusing on developingsoccer athletes in America’surban centers.

Martin, whose daughter is ajunior soccer player at GuyerHigh School, said he hopes toscreen the documentary forsoccer program leaders and

players in the Denton schooldistrict.

He will attend the ThinLine screening on Feb. 17,which is sponsored by theDenton Soccer Association.

Martin’s is one of a numberof films in the festival thathave Denton ties or that weremade by Denton filmmakers.

Denton filmmaker AndyLaViolette will defend his titleas the winner of the 2012Denton Doc Award withSnarky Puppy: Ground Up,which screens at 8 p.m.Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Tues-day at the Campus Theatre.

Dallas filmmaker and UNTgraduate Patrick Flahertydirected 4 Nights in December, which follows Denton bandTrebuchet, which screens at 8p.m. Feb. 15 at the CampusTheatre and 3 p.m. Feb. 18 atthe Fine Arts Theater.

UNT graduate student SaraMassetti’s short documentaryUndocumented Dreams willbe shown during the secondprogram of film shorts, at10:30 p.m. Saturday at theCampus Theatre.

The Burning of Fry Street,by late Denton filmmakerChristopher Largen, will havea memorial screening at 7 p.m.Feb. 14 on the roof of CoolBeans, 1210 W. Hickory St.The 16-minute film wasscreened at the inaugural ThinLine Film Fest in 2007, whenit received the jury prize.
