Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke ValleyTherapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley provides specialized and adaptive recreation and leisure services that empower people with disabilities to gain the knowledge and skills needed for the development of a leisure lifestyle that meets their interests and needs.The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, or who have psychiatric disabilities.RegistrationRegistration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to the registration date. Registration can occur up to 2 weeks before the first day of a program. Unless otherwise written, TRS programs will occur at the Brambleton Center.
Participants will not be able to register for programs if they have an outstanding balance of over $200. Participants need to pay for a program before it occurs. If a program meets for multiple weeks, payment must be made before the last meeting of the program.
TRS Support StaffSupport Staff assist as needed in all aspects of your participation in TRS programs. Duties may include: assisting with transportation, supervision, limited personal care, prompting, and suppor t as par t ic ipants work towards program, and their indiv idual recreat ion goals.
High Demand Classes & Wait ListsSometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a next to the title. If a class fills, the participant will automatically be placed on a wait list. Participants will be contacted if placed on the wait list and a space becomes available. TransportationTransportation fee is $3.00 for each round trip, for those who need to be picked up for programs. Programs that have the word LIMITED after the transportation fee, only offer transportation from home for those who live independently, or in group homes without transportation, all other participants can meet at a pick-up point or at the program. Transportation is only provided at pick-up points for trips ourside the Roanoke Valley. TRS Transportation pick-up points are:
Brambleton Center, Goodwill Salem-Lakeside Plaza, Goodwill Vinton, & 460 Antique Mall.
InclusionPeople with disabilities are encouraged to participate in recreation programs that meet their interest and function level. Please check out Roanoke County, City of Roanoke, and City of Salem general recreation programs. Contact TRS for more information about Inclusion Services. Request for Inclusion Service must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. Transportation is not provided for general recreation programs.

31st Annual Valentine’s Dinner DanceCelebrate 31 years of Valentine's Dinner Dances with TRS on Monday, February 8th. Come and enjoy delectable food, rocking music, delirious dancing, enticing door prizes, and an evening of fun. The sit-down dinner begins at 6 PM sharp, followed by the crowning of the King and Queen of Hearts. If three or more residents from a group home are attending, a staff member from that group home must accompany them. There are also tables for those who participate in Mingle or Monday Night Avengers. Registration closes on January 27. Program fee of $26 includes dinner, dancing and all the fun! If a participant is unable to eat the meal and wants to attend, the fee is $7. Transportation is extremely limited, so please provide transportation if possible. Outdoor & TravelHiking, Climbing, Biking, Day and Overnight Trips
Massanutten Water Park Waterslides in January? That’s right! Experience a truly unique indoor water experience. Massanutten Water Park is a totally enclosed and heated indoor water facility. Enjoy slides on a tube or pad, floating the Blue Ridge Rapids, body-boarding on the 'Pipeline' Flow-Rider sheet wave, blasting away with water cannons in the Massanutten Meltdown, or soaking in the Shenandoah Hot Springs. Program fee includes transportation and water park admission. The group will stay at the park from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We will make a fast food stop for lunch prior to arriving at Massanutten, and stop at Harrisonburg Cracker Barrel for dinner before returning home. Costs of meals are not included in the program, and participants should plan to spend approximately $6.00 for lunch and $12.00 for dinner. Program will be canceled in event of inclement weather. Worleys CaveHey, Batman! Want to
see what a real cave looks like without the walkways and handrails? This is your opportunity to go deep into a dark and dirty living cave. In this adventurous and challenging activity we'll have all the gear you need to go far below ground. Footing is uneven and often slick, but you'll be amazed at the wonders we find. Camp-In There’s nothing like camping out…..indoors?
Similar to our annual lock-in, this outdoors themed camp-in will be a full night of food, activities, and socializing inside the Brambleton Center. We'll have picnic-style barbeque catered by Brambleton Deli and afterwards roast marshmallows for s'mores. Enjoy gazing at the stars through a full scale astronomy telescope, then head inside and roll out sleeping bags for bed-time camping stories. Cinebowl & GrilleBowling, a movie, and exquisite food! All in one
place? You bet! What could be more fun? At the Cinebowl & Grille in Blacksburg, VA, we will enjoy a game of bowling while being served a delicious lunch in this unique and innovative setting. Then we’ll visit the attached theater to see a new release movie at their state-of-the-art theater. Bowling, lunch and movie are included in your program fee. Transportation from pick-up points only. Dog Days of Winter Do you love dogs? Who doesn’t? Have a desire
to help others? Absolutely! This 3-week program will focus on volunteering at Angels of Assisi. We will take part in orientation prior to learning how to care for the animals and properly and safely walk the dogs. After completing the program, you'll be empowered to continue to volunteer with Angels as much as you would like. A meal is not included, but feel free to bring a lite lunch or snack. Kairos Cookie Cooking ClassHave you ever wondered how many cookies
you can bake in 2.5 hours? Join this collective effort to bring comfort to inmates with encouragement that only a cookie can bring. We'll make several dozen Peanut Butter, Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip, and Easy Cookies that will be delivered by Kairos prison outreach volunteers to prisoners in maximum security prisons throughout Virginia. We'll enjoy a crockpot lunch and even snack on a few cookies for “quality control”. Feel free to take a few home with

Movie ClubChoose from two of the latest movies and enjoy a great Saturday at Carmike 10, Tanglewood. If you want a popcorn bucket, you will need to purchase a 2016 bucket for $18.50 that can be refilled for $3.50. Movie Club meets on Saturdays from ~4-5:30pm depending on movie choices. Program fee includes movie ticket and supervision. Movie Club routes will not be mailed. If you have an email, you can choose to receive an E-Route. All other participants will receive a phone call on Wednesday after 3 pm with their pick-up time and movie choices. Super Suppers Join your friends as we explore a local restaurant each month, experiencing different cuisines and atmospheres, sure to please the palette. Super Suppers is designed to help participants with ordering from a menu and working within a given budget, while enjoying a night out with friends. No money handling skills are needed. Super Suppers meets on Fridays from 6:30-8:30pm. Program fees vary according to restaurant. See below for restaurants and descriptions. fantastic thing for the summer in Virginia. Let the staff at Aquatic Adventures teach you the basics of swimming, and remove any fear you have about taking the plunge. Life SkillsTechnology, cooking, home improvement,and social outings
MingleMingle is designed for young adults with disabilities, ages 18-30. Participate in socialization, recreation, and leisure activities at the Brambleton Center and wellness activities at Green Ridge Recreation Center. As a member of Mingle, you will work with other group members in planning monthly outings in the Roanoke Valley. Mingle will meet Tuesday or Thursday nights from 7-9 pm (You may register for one night, not both). Both groups will meet one Saturday each semester for ‘Social Saturday’. This is an opportunity for the Tuesday and Thursday night groups to meet and socialize. To become a member, you must be able to follow two step directions, be independent in your personal care, have the ability to care for your own belongings, and self-administer your medications. Bingo NightHow do you spell fun? B-I-N-G-O! That’s right, get ready for a night of fun and laughter with friends while playing Bingo! Dinner Dates Meet and eat at the Brambleton Center for a dinner date with friends! Participants will learn and practice all the necessary skills needed to prepare a meal for friends and family at home. Each month, participants will take part in all aspects of the meal preparation, such as setting the table, preparing and cooking the food, and cleaning up afterwards. This program is designed for participants who want to practice the skills they learn at home and have access to a kitchen. Dinner Dates is on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm. Leisure Seekers Leisure Seekers provides a structured environment for skill-building, socializing with peers and engaging in a smorgasbord of activities both at the Brambleton Center and throughout the Roanoke Valley. Activities include Taco Thursday, Roanoke College Art Gallery, Pop's Ice Cream and Soda Bar, plus much more! Activity info will be distributed weekly at this 6-week program. Program fee covers all materials, supplies, admission fees and transportation. Leisure Seekers will not meet on February 11. Monday Night AvengersThe Avengers Social Club is for adults, ages 31+, who are looking to meet new people and create friendships while having fun and fostering independence. All activities will be planned by the participants and may include activities such as: dining, cooking, arts & crafts, and wellness & fitness activities. Positive Posture Want an easy method to lose weight, reduce stress, and improve your breathing and your mood? One of the simplest methods to enhance your health and reduce the chance of falls is to strengthen the muscle groups responsible for good posture. During this low-impact 4 week course, Kristen Gallatin, Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer, will lead exercises that target your core and back muscles to help develop good posture and increase balance. Fitness Club While involved in this 8-week program, TRS staff will work closely with each participant to develop specific fitness goals that will be worked on while at Fitness Club. Each week, participants will have an individualized set of exercises and stretches, designed to help them meet their fitness goals, while taking into consideration any modifications or adaptations needed. We will also discuss weekly nutrition goals. Join us as we get up and get moving! Participants are advised to consult their doctor before participating in any physical fitness regimen. Step It Up!Everyday is a great day for walking! The U.S
Surgeon General recently unveiled his “Step It Up!” program to promote a healthy lifestyle by walking, and TRS is joining in. This is an exciting new program, and we'll help you increase your walking and physical fitness. Don’t worry about the weather- during the cold winter months we'll walk indoors at Tanglewood and Valley View Malls and utilize the track at Green Ridge.
