TOUCHMARK ON WEST CENTURY THE{FULL} LIFE May 2017 On your mark. Get set … cybercyle! Club members’ workouts are gaining steam at the Touchmark Health & Fitness Club thanks to the addition of the Expresso HD stationary bike. The advanced technology on this bike is the first of its kind in Bismarck. Users, including Club member Mark Very, are quickly catching on to the bike’s many benefits that come with the virtual reality. Mark has been a Club member for nearly two years and appreciates how the bike is “user-friendly” and how he can get a low-impact, vigorous workout while also exercising his brain. “I love this thing! All the different courses, the many levels to choose from, and overall great variety this machine offers make this by far my favorite piece of cardio equipment at Touchmark,” he says. Boosting the exercise routine The Expresso HD provides a computer-simulated environment for users to gain a more interactive experience. The screen displays different trail options and even offers games to play while on the bike. By controlling hand steering, users respond to the on-screen terrain and commands. Health & Fitness Director Nick Henkelman says the Expresso Bike has been a great addition to the Club’s cardio equipment. “People are really enjoying it! It doesn’t take very long to learn how to use it, and it’s easy to set up a personal online account. Members say they feel more motivated to ride—and to increase their intensity—because of the simulations.” Fun—and exercise for the brain Recent research shows this type of exercise can prevent or delay dementia and improve brain function. Health professionals have found that by adding the virtual reality component, older adults can gain some protection against mild cognitive impairment. With its advanced technology, the bike offers many useful tools for building a fitness routine. For example, the user can choose to race against a “ghost rider,” which is the computer’s record of a person’s last best ride. This helps users keep track of their progress and build endurance. It is also compatible with exercise tracking apps. To sign up to use the Expresso HD, talk with a Club team member.
