RECAP OF THE WEEK

The Club’s 20th meeting for RY2017-2018, which was also an Evening

Fellowship, was one of the most highly anticipated event of the year. As early as

weeks ago, fellow Rotarians had already reserved seats for themselves and their

guests. The Club’s committee even managed to secure the classy JW Marriott

Hotel Kuala Lumpur as the venue for the meeting. All preparation works were

undertaken and completed well before the meeting was to take place on 29th

November. The reason for the great response and attention to fine details was

none other than the fact that 29th November was “An Evening With Tun Dr

Mahatir”.

Unfortunately, we were informed quite late that Tun Dr Mahatir would not

be able to make it for the Evening Fellowship as originally scheduled.

Nevertheless, instead of feeling sorry for themselves our Rotarians chose to

use this unexpected opportunity to showcase the true meaning of ‘making

the best out of what life throws at you’. A total of 34 Rotarians turned out

bringing with them 37 guests and 2 visiting Rotarians namely Michael

Hegelbach and Mirella Ackermann both from Calvia Int Spain. Rotarian

Surinderdeep had the honour of convening the meeting.

We also celebrated the birthdays of Terence Lim (23 October), Bingley Sim,

Jonathan Choong and IPP Datuk Uwe Ahrens (all in November).

The huge number of attendees were treated to an enjoyable

evening and did not leave disappointed as the Guest Speaker for the

night (albeit under extremely short notice) Mr Carsten Fischer had

everyone’s attention fixated on him. Mr Fischer who is the German

Deputy Ambassador spoke on the topic “Germany After the Elections”

and gave all present a very helpful insight on the political landscape and

situation in Germany. We were indeed fortunate to have someone of his

stature come and share his knowledge with us and more than made up

for the disappointment of not having Tun Dr Mahatir for the evening.

The unexpected turn of events could not have turned out better.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is undoubtedly one of the most

anticipated movies of this year.

That's why our Club, together with Rotary Club Bukit Kiara

Sunrise and partners in service Rotaract Club of Bukit Kiara

Sunrise and Interact Club of SMK Seri Hartamas, will be

jointly organising a project that will bring joy, and the Force, to

approx 250 orphans from selected children's homes.

The project is currently in its planning and implementation

stage, and has a very simple objective: to treat 250 orphans to a

dinner cum viewing of Star Wars The Last Jedi at MM Cineplex,

e@Curve on 19th December 2017 at 8pm.

Tree Planting Event under

The Kuala Lumpur Rotary Charity Foundation

Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja | Chartered 15 January 1930 | District 3300 - Club No. 16222 7

A great tree planting ceremony and official

launch for My R Tree project took place on 25th

November 2017 at Majlis Perbandaran Selayang at

the Puteri Central Park, Bandar Tasik Puteri in

Rawang

This momentuous event was graced by

presence and launched by YAM Setia Datin Tengku

Zatasha Tengku Sarafuddin Idris Shah. The

objective of the event was to create an

awareness, appreciation for the outdoor activities

and help reduce the CO2 emission in the Klang

Valley. The event was part of the “Perdana Tree

Planting Campaign” a brainchild of council

president Tn. Suliman bin Abd. Rahman. Orang

Kaya Daerah, Tan Sri Wan Mahmood bin Pawan

contributed his time and effort to ensure the

success of the event.

In response to the Rotary International challenge to green

the world, the leadership of Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur Di

Raja, with the assistance from RC of Shah Alam, RC of Bernam

Valley, RC of Kg.Baru Central, RC of Damansara, RC Bandar

Utama, RC Pudu, RC Sentul, RC Lake Gardens and RC Gombak,

raised over RM 75,000 for the purchase of the trees that were

planted by Rotractors, Interactors and Volunteers. Over 400

trees were planted on parkland. The parkland is a crucial area,

as it one of the major CO2 sink holes of Klang Valley.

Incidentally, the seeds of this initiative (pun intended),

were planted way back during the tenure of IPP Datuk Uwe in

RY2016/2017. Driven by the indomitable drive and will of PDG

Dato Jimmy Lim and a great MyRTree Committee this year, this

project is now bearing fruit for all.

RC KL DiRaja President Ajmal Khan said, “It was a great gesture of the

part of YAM Setia Datin Tengku Zatasha, to add the Royal Touch and

take time off her busy schedule, to work with Rotarians and pave the

way to help the environment”.

Project Director, Dato Jimmy Lim added, “It was a great day to

see Rotarians from 9 different clubs responding to the

International challenge and coming together to green the

world”. Project Chairman, Dato Uwe Ahrens, said “it’s all about

encouraging people to plant a tree in the garden, school, work

place or even community like what we are doing today”.
