Scripture of the week: “By their fruit you shall know them.”

Matthew 7:18-20

Teaching Self-Control toYoung Children

Jesus says that we will recognize good people by their fruit. He likens them to trees: bad trees cannot bear good fruit, but good trees do. Self-control is one of the fruits we should see develop in us and our children.

Preschool years are an excellent time to build some character qualities that will last a lifetime. Self-control is probably one of the most difficult qualities to teach and should be continuously taught from a very early age. Teach-ing children self-control after the age of three or four will affect a child’s character and behaviour for life, often with devastating effects. Even adults will resist a diet, staying on a budget or an exercise program. If we can teach chil-dren self-control when they are very young, they’ll begin to develop significant tools for when they get older. Different character qualities can be emphasised at different develop-mental stages. A newborn, for example, learns about love, trust and a positive view of the world because of the lov-ing care given by parents. As children grow and develop, new character qualities are added to the picture. Primary children are at a strategic age to learn so much about life. Creativity, compassion, patience, confidence, and coopera-tion are just a few of the many new qualities that begin to develop during these years.

Talk about self-control with your young child. They may not understand the term yet, but they’ll grow into it. We can teach self-control through a number of family rules. When we go into a store, we have the “No Touch Rule.” When in a library or bank, we may use the “Don’t be Wild Rule.”

Young children learn self-control by coming when called, instead of running away. They also learn about bedtime rules and how to hold a parent’s hand in a store or out in public when crossing a road. Children naturally resist these attempts to help them learn to give up their agenda, but that is what self-control is all about.

Strategy for the week: When you first teach rules like these, start by making them fun. Teach the rules like a game, then put them into practice in life and enforce the new rules with repetition and practice.

~ In His service, Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

The Shape of Things to Come

Possums children are on the move in their learning journeys, looking for shapes in the centre environ-ment.

They have been using their powers of observation and investigative skills in the process. Fine motor skills have also been developed through free drawing of shapes.

The children loved posing for these shape portraits.

Poetry

Thursday, May 12, 2011 - Page 3

Secondary

I thought you may enjoy reading poetry this week. I found these two poems written by unknown authors. I hope you enjoy reading them.

ChoicesSome people sit, some people try; Some people laugh, some people cry; Some people will, some people won’t;Some people do, some people don’t.

Some people believe, and develop a plan; Some people doubt, never think that they can; Some people face hurdles and give it their best; Some people back down when faced with a test.

Some people complain of their miserable lot; Some people are thankful for all that they’ve got;And when it’s all over, when it comes to an end; Some people lose out, and some people win.

We all have a choice, we all have a say;We are spectators in life, or we get in and play;Whichever we choose, how we handle life’s game; The choices are ours, no one else is to blame.

Joyful ThingsAt times I’m so discouragedwith problems of the dayI fail to see the joyful thingsthat are along the way

When troubles overwhelm meIt’s then my nerves may fraythat’s when I need to take the timeTo simply sit and pray

Reflecting on God’s many giftsIt makes me so awareOf all the joy in little thingsaround me everywhere!

I must try to rememberthough problems come my waynot to miss the joyful thingsand the beauty of the day.

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy.

In God’s ServiceQuote from “Walk in Faith” by Ray McCauleyThen He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plen-tiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38

The problem has never been with the harvest - the prob-lem has always been that the labourers are few. Look around you; in the workplace, in the shopping mall, amongst your friends and relations. There are so many people who are empty and hopeless. They need to hear the Good News of the Gospel. They need to hear that Jesus loves them and died for them. Remember the day when somebody first told you of God’s great love for you? Freely you have received. Freely give to others.

Determine to become a labourer in God’s harvest fields.Don’t get so heavenly minded that you are no earthly

good! Rather be like Jesus and reach out with His love and His compassion to those who so desperately need Him. God hates sin but He loves sinners. When did you last pray, “Fa-ther, lead me to someone who needs some help or show me who to contact for You?” Allow God’s love for mankind to flow through you, be a labourer in His harvest field.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30

Gymnastics Challenge Recently, Madison Price, 5H,

competed in the Aurora Chal-lenge in Brisbane. She competed in Level 4 and gained 3rd place overall.

Madison is now training for re-gional and state competitions in June.

Well done Madison and all the best for the regionals.

Selected for Regionals On the 4th and 5th of May

I played at a regional rugby league carnival representing the U11 Gold Coast South team. The point of this carnival was for a South Coast regional rugby team to be selected. We played against three other districts which were Beenleigh, Gold Coast North and Beaudesert. The competition was tough and I knew that I had to play my best to make it into the team. After the lunch break on the second day they finally announced the team - I was extremely excited when they called out my name! I’m very happy that I was chosen for the squad and look forward to playing for the South Coast rugby league team this year.
