It is difficult to believe that this is the

second year of the 2013-2015 biennium.

Each month seems to go by faster than the

previous one. The assistance and support

which members have shown me is greatly

appreciated. Your help and support, and

good wishes will continue to be valued.

In June, the state leadership team, led

by Meier Bauer, traveled to Wilmot, Ada,

and Chillicothe to meet and work with

chapter officers. Seventy-four chapters

were represented at these workshops. All

participants received a CD containing

information that will be helpful in the

2014-2016, biennium. It was a pleasure

working with the chapter officers.

It was an honor to represent you at

the 2014 International Executive Board

meetings at the International Convention

in Indianapolis. Ninety Ohioans attended the convention. We attended general ses-

sions, listened to outstanding speakers, participated in workshops, enjoyed official

meals, and saw the sights of downtown Indianapolis.

Next year the Northeast Regional Conference is in Baltimore, Maryland. It is

strongly recommended that you attend to increase your knowledge of Delta Kappa

Gamma. Baltimore is a beautiful and historic city.

Please remember to check the Alpha Delta State website. Webmaster Eileen

McNally updates the website regularly.

With much sadness, we learned of the loss of past Alpha Delta State president,

Mary Irwin. She served Ohio from 1975-1977. There will be a tribute to her in a fu-

ture issue of The Voice.

It is a joy and honor to serve as your state president. Please let me know if there is

anything that I can do to support you and your chapter.

During the general sessions of the International Convention, many amendments to the

International Constitution and Standing Rules were proposed and voted on. The fol-

lowing is a summary of what transpired.

The number of members needed to form a new state organization was increased

from 30 to 40. The Administrative Board had proposed that 60 members were

needed to cover the cost of the state to the Society.

The items involved with World Fellowship were postponed.

The direct election of officers amendments were defeated, including all mem-

bers voting at the convention and a direct election through mailings.

Host state will no longer receive the seed money of $1,500 for the regional con-

ferences. States may still host the state night, but without the financial support of

International.

It was voted to allow the Administrative Board to reduce registration fees for

the host state. (This does not mean that they will, only that they have the power to

do so.)

A new collegial magazine will be published initially in print form and also on

the website. It will be issued twice a year. An editorial board will review it. They

predict the first deadline for submissions will be March, 2015, and the first issue

would be published in June, 2015. The cost for nonmembers will be $5.00 an is-

sue.

The honorary membership fee was lowered to $49.50 to allow members of Con-

gress or their employees to be offered membership.

An amendment to have The Bulletin be printed in languages other than English

was postponed. The annual subscription rate for nonmembers for The Bulletin was

raised to $21.00 or $7.00 an issue.

The Latin American Conference will receive $3,000, not $2,500.

A candidate pursuing doctoral studies must have been a member for three years,

but for other graduate studies, only an active membership is required.

Constitution and Standing Rules

Chapter rules for 59 chapters have been reviewed, analyzed, and verified by the By-

laws and Policies and Procedures Committee. Copies have been edited and filed in

binders by correct Greek order for future reference. For those 38 chapters who have

not submitted rules, guideline forms, directions, and a sample copy will be given to

those specific chapter presidents at the October Executive Board Meeting. The Bylaws

and Policies and Procedures Committee appreciates the dedication of chapter members

for assistance meeting this goal.

During the Leadership workshops this

summer, many programs were shared

with our new leaders. These programs

covered the three goals of the Educa-

tional Excellence Committee. Chapters

are encouraged to send pictures of pro-

grams they conduct during the coming

year to the Chairman of this committee.

They will be displayed at the Info Fair

at the State convention.

This coming year the EEC will be

launching a new project called

“Opportunity Awaits You!” It will pro-

mote contact with college education

students to extend information about

our Society. Details of this exciting

project will be thoroughly discussed at

the October Executive meeting with all

who attend.

The purpose of the A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation is to encourage and fur-

ther, by grants, an interchange of education and educational techniques between for-

eign teachers and Ohio teachers. This Foundation was incorporated on June 4, 1981.

Because this Foundation has 501(c)3 status under the Internal Revenue Service code,

all contributions are tax exempt.

In February, 2014, the Foundation trustees were provided with the dossiers and

applications from women outside the United States desiring to study in Ohio. The ap-

plications were reviewed and prioritized. I am pleased to report that our number one

candidate will be attending The Ohio State University. Fnu Hafniliana, Indonesia, will

be studying English. She is married and her birthday is August 14. We welcome her to

Ohio and to Alpha Delta State.

If you would like to send a thinking of you or note of encouragement, below is

Hafniliana’s address: 617 Stark Court, c/o: Vinta A. Tiarani, Columbus, OH 43210.

Through the A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation, stipends are available to

Ohio members for overseas study and travel. Members are typically enrolled in an

overseas program accredited by a United States college or university. Current Ohio

members with at least three years of membership in Delta Kappa Gamma are eligible

to apply. Applications are due by February 1, 2015. To obtain an application or more

information, contact Pat Cermak, Alpha Delta State First Vice President and chairman

of the A. M. Boyd Selections committee.

Members Responsible to Submit Release Form

All members of Delta Kappa Gamma must sign a Release Form. The form permits

your name, email or photo, etc. to be used on any DKG website (such as in a commit-

tee listing or officer list) or in any newsletter, including chapter newsletters.

A hard copy of the release form can be downloaded, signed and sent, via USPS

mail, to the state webmaster’s address on the form. A more convenient way to com-

plete and submit is by completing the information right on the website. You will give

an electronic signature that will go directly to the state webmaster. Use this address for

both the hard copy or the electronic version: alphadeltastate.weebly.com/release-

form.html

Chapter presidents can distribute, collect and send forms for your entire chapter. It

is suggested that a record be maintained of who has and who has not signed the form.

Chapter presidents can contact the state webmaster if they have any questions. There is

a list to check who have signed the form. Individuals must contact Eileen McNally

directly for access to this information.

It is:

Thirty women carefully selected from

international applications.

Two weeks in a dorm room at the

University of Texas at Austin.

Classes from 8:30 to 5:15 (with a

break for lunch).

Additional classes, meetings or dis-

cussions in the evening.

Top-notch professors from the Uni-

versity of Texas.

A stack of binders and handouts over

eight inches tall.

But it is so much more. It is a first-

class opportunity to develop leadership

skills for future use in Delta Kappa

Gamma and beyond. The thirty women

work shoulder to shoulder during two

weeks of intensive training. The classes

include Interpersonal Communication,

Leadership, Emotional Intelligence,

Improving Your Professional Image,

and Thinking on Your Feet.

By the end of two weeks, wonder-

ful, unique, and long lasting friendships

have blossomed. Beyond the classroom,

insights and ideas have been shared.

Yes, it is exhausting, but you come

away with a better sense of who you are

as a leader and as a person.

The Golden Gift Leadership Man-

agement Seminar is held in even-

numbered years preceding the Interna-

tional Convention. Applications are

available online beginning July 1st of

the year preceding the seminar. If you

have been a member for at least three

years, you are eligible. Except for a

small amount out of pocket (which is

usually paid by the member’s chapter),

the seminar costs are covered by the

Golden Gift Fund.

On a personal note: This oppor-

tunity had a huge impact on me. The

friendships and camaraderie were as

valuable as the training. I now have

Golden Sisters across the US mainland,

Hawaii, Costa Rica, and The Nether-

lands. I am so fortunate.

Eileen McNally, Beta Delta

Golden Gift:

What Is It?

Have you ever attended a meeting where someone spoke without being recognized by

the chair and the following discussion lasted, well -- far too long?

Of course not. All our meetings stay on track....

However, if that situation should ever occur, here are two ways to get the meeting

back on track.

If there has been a motion which has been seconded and the following discussion

goes elsewhere, someone can "Call the question." This is a request that the vote on the

motion be taken.

The chair responds, "The question has been called. Is there a second? When there

is a second, the chair continues, "Those in favor of stopping debate and taking a vote,

say yes.

Opposed, no. The yeses have it."

Because calling for the question is one of those few motions that limits the rights

of members, i.e. stops debate and the right to amend, it requires 2/3s of the voting

members to vote yes.

When the motion to call the question passes, then the original motion is voted

upon without further discussion.

When there is not a motion on the floor, and the meeting has taken a wild turn,

someone may call for the orders of the day. This motion simply asks for a return to the

schedule stated by the agenda. When just one member agrees, the chair returns to the

appropriate place in the agenda, for example, "The next business is the report of the

Educational Excellence Committee."

Thanks to Vicky from Columbus for the question.

Staying the Course with Proper Procedures

Where Are You Looking For New Members?

How did you find out about Delta Kappa Gamma? Chances are, you were personally

contacted by a current member or maybe you were invited to a meeting. The follow-

ing “poem” is one way to think about membership.

50 DKG members sat talking - 5 did not like the new president;

now there are 45.

45 DKG members were whispering — 10 did not like the higher dues;

now there are 35.

35 DKG members had coffee — 10 did not like where meetings were held;

now there are 25.

25 DKG members were e-mailing — 5 did not like serving on committees;

now there are 20.

20 DKG members came to a meeting — 5 did not like singing the song;

now there are 15.

“OH MY — something has to be done, said someone

Someone else said we must be positive in our thinking, soooo

15 DKG members invited 5 new teachers to a meeting;

now there are 20 members.

20 DKG members wore their pins everyday and had brochures to give out;

now there are 40 members.

40 DKG members served coffee and donuts on the first day of school;

now there are 60 members.

And the beat goes on!

Refer to the International Constitution for those requirements individuals must

meet for membership. Increasing chapter membership is every member’s job. Use the

personal approach.

The Communications/Publicity Committee has developed a new rubric for assessing

chapter newsletters. The rubric should better convey to chapters what the committee

determines as an effective and professional newsletter. A copy of the rubric will be

given to each Chapter President and will be available on the state website. After the

newsletters are assessed in February, the chapter will receive a copy of their chapter’s

completed rubric.

Each chapter should submit at least one copy of two different newsletters to Ann

Todd, The Voice editor and Peggy Ciolek, Communications Committee chairman, for

Gold Key consideration. When emailing the newsletters, please include the chapter

name in the subject line. It helps for filing and record-keeping.

What do you do if you have a closet full of vintage hats? Wear them! My only problem

was I did not have a good venue where the hats would be appreciated…until I joined

Delta Kappa Gamma. Teas. Presidency with hat theme: Hat for each meeting; Hat

program; Necrology program featuring hats to represent the Founders.

The first year I was a member I attended our State Convention on Saturday. I en-

joyed the sessions, but I really could not wait until the Celebration Luncheon where we

were asked to wear hats and gloves. How lovely and impressive to see the banquet hall

full of ladies in hats!

Having that thought in mind the following year, I showed up on the Saturday of

convention wearing my hat. As I moved from session to session, I noticed nobody else

was wearing one, but I figured I just had mine on early. However, when I walked into

the Celebration Luncheon, and I was still the only one in a hat, I realized I had made a

mistake! Then it was explained to me that hats were not worn every year to the lunch-

eon, only last year at the request of then State President Barbara Smith! (from my

chapter)

With so many traditions continued through DKG, I was sad that wearing hats was

not one of them. That moment, which had been slightly embarrassing at the time, soon

became funny. Plus, the hat had served as an interesting ice breaker which lead to some

wonderful conversations. I continue to wear hats to convention so I can have more of

those conversations that highlight a DKG tradition that will always remain—our amaz-

ing members and their incredible accomplishments.

Chi Chapter in Southwestern Ohio celebrated its 75th anniversary by honoring the

founders of the Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Members of Chi Chapter were initiated at the Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincin-

nati on Saturday, January 14, 1939, at 11:30 AM, by Margaret White, state president

and founder, and Mabel Dysinger, state founder. Teachers from Butler County went

by train or slid by automobile to Cincinnati to learn more about Delta Kappa Gamma

on this cold, icy day. After a delightful luncheon, Chi Chapter was organized by Ma-

bel Dysinger. Hazel Spyker was elected president. It was decided that Chi would hold

the first chapter meeting in Hamilton in February.

The first local meeting was held in the Hamilton Y.W.C.A. on February 18, 1939.

At this time the four charter members, who could not be present in Cincinnati, were

initiated. The next few months for the Chi Chapter were busy ones as members orga-

nized under the leadership of Hazel. Plans were made to choose other teachers whom

they thought were worthy of the same honor which had been bestowed upon them.

The Chi Chapter has had 75 wonderful years as we honor those strong women

educators who came before us. Many Chi members have served on State and Interna-

tional committees with having the honor of Katherine Roudebush and Mary Erwin

serve as president of Alpha Delta State. During our 75 years of existence, we have

given many scholarships to local high school seniors going into education. We have

been involved in many projects and charities such as the Dove House and Tipp Pro-

gram, Therapeutic Interagency Preschool Program, Food Pantry, Pennies for Africa,

Books for Babies and One Way Farm supplies. Chi was also instrumental in the or-

ganization of two sister chapters in Butler County: Gamma Xi in 1961 and Delta Sig-

ma in 1973. Chi continues to be a Gold Key chapter as we meet the International and

State requirements.

To commemorate the occasion, the current chapter met on May 15, 2014. During

the meeting, Chi members shared a PowerPoint presentation to learn more about the

strong women educators who were instrumental in the early years of our chapter. Fol-

lowing the presentation, the minutes from the first ever meeting on February 18, 1939,

were read. To conclude the history part of the program, an original poem to honor the

founding members, written by deceased member and historian Dorothy Pearson, was

read, and former Chi presidents were recognized. Each member was gifted with a

beautiful, handcrafted rose bracelet to commemorate the occasion.

Seventy-one chapters learned that It’s Really Not a Jungle Out There! as they partici-

pated in the Leadership Training Workshops on June 24, 25, and 26. The Alpha Delta

State officers traveled to Wilmot, Ada, and Chillicothe to lead 182 chapter officers in

their learning of the care of their chapters.

In keeping with President Emily Williams’ love of animals and the zoo, each of-

ficer assumed the role of an animal to share information about the duties of chapter

offices and responsibilities. This was followed by President Williams, our tall giraffe

who looks out from above and oversees all work, presenting an amazing, not common-

ly known fact about each animal. Chapter Leadership CDs were given to each partici-

pant, reports and their due dates were explained, opportunities were given for ques-

tions, and all left eager to begin the work of their chapters for the new chapter bienni-

um.

As questions or concerns occur throughout the year, members are urged to contact

their state officers who would like to listen to your concerns, help you resolve prob-

lems, and encourage your progress.

Nearly 40 Alpha Delta State voices were heard with the formation and distribution of

over 70 recommendations to the 2006 edition of the Manual of Policies and Proce-

dures of Alpha Delta State Ohio, which was distributed at the October Executive Board

Meeting and posted on Alpha Delta State’s website. The proposed recommendations

are divided into two categories with changes listed in italics or a cross-through. The

first group lists clerical changes needed for clarification, with editorial changes listed

in the second grouping. Both areas have two columns. The first lists the bold heading

with page number, section, category, and, in some instances, the numbered item, as

listed in the current Manual. New wording is listed in column two. Items for considera-

tion and discussion complete the report.

Chapter presidents are encouraged to share recommendations with chapter mem-

bers through paper or electronic means. The current Manual is posted on Alpha Delta

State’s website for easy viewing. The recommendations will be included in April’s

convention packets for further study before official presentation and voting. Once fi-

nalized, the revised Manual should be available at the 2015 fall Executive Board meet-

ing.
