_________________________Shropshire Voice October 2012

From the Secretary It has been a busy summer in the Shrop-shire office. Registration mail typically starts to weigh down the mail truck by the last week of April. Most work at that time is for the Classic Sale with few breeders register-ing more than a handful of their spring lambs. The crop really starts to sprout by the end of May and June and July are typically fraught with some long days and/or nights at the desk. As of August 31, the statistics look pretty favorable with regis-trations being up about 3% and transfers up by 17% over the same period in 2011. I believe people are keeping more ewe lambs this year than last. That will help the Shropshire breed to grow. There are lots of young people involved again this year and some families new to the breed. The numbers at the shows continue to be strong. The Classic had an excellent sale with the average being up considerably over last year. Numbers at the Spectacular were a bit leaner but the average was down only slightly. Entries were up at Sedalia and stayed steady at the Great Lakes Sale. Breeders all need to continue to support any Shropshire sale with quality entries and high bids, no matter what the geography. The All-American had a pretty decent show, even located in Iowa where there are only two breeders. Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Mis-souri and Kansas had strong contingents. Congratulations to Monica Ebert on her Top Gun Award. What a way to finish her last ju-nior show! The Ohio State Fair was well attended once again. The North East Youth Show had a very nice show in July. We look forward to another good event at the Big E. Last week we ventured to the New York State Fair in Syracuse to be on hand for the featured sheep breed of the fair which of course was Shropshires. It seems that Shropshires made an impression as management said that no other breed secretary has attended their

show. Hopefully we’ve been able to include as many show results as possible in this Voice. The National Show is in Louisville again this year. What an opportunity for a family to participate in a variety of Shropshire events! All of the Shropshires will be in the barn at the same time this year. Junior events take

place on the weekend, Stars of Louisville Sale on Saturday, Junior Show on Sunday, meetings happen on Monday and the Open Show runs on Tuesday so there is some-thing Shroppy five days in a row! I have just completed the trans-fer work on two sizable private sales. One was for Sarah Nich-ols of Ohio who sold 20 head to Randy and Julie Rife. The other set

was from Chris Whittaker of Illinois. Chris is going off to school. I remember way back in 2007 when I was first hired, Chris’s year-ling ewe was one of the first sheep I pho-tographed in Louisville. It’s sad to see sheep move on but these two flocks will have good homes and they’ll carry on well as good Shropshires should. Good luck to both of these young people as they start new chap-ters in their lives. Four scholarships are being awarded this fall to Hallie Walker, Trevor High, Matthew Dirlam and Emily Petzel. The ASRA congratu-lates these young people and wishes them much success in all of their future endeavors! No matter how much we hear this, it is still true that the younger generation is still the future of the sheep industry so it is very im-portant to support them in a variety of ways. Keep an eye on the Junior Association. These young people are paving the way for tomor-row’s junior members to be very involved with the breed. I hope to see a lot of you in Louisville in November. It is always a pleasure to meet so many nice folks. Conversation always leads to weather, crops, sheep and family. I’ll see you there!

Secretary Becky Peterson

It appears that the emailed registration ap-plications begun in the spring has been most-ly successful. The Excel version is the most popular and easier to use. The printed forms are neat, clean and easy to read. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s effort to be accurate with the information they submit, especially sire and dam information and birth dates, no matter what application form is used or how it is sent. The prompt submission of sire lease forms is helpful, also. The online payment option has been pop-ular as well. A sizable amount of money has been sent this way and it is quick and simple. I appreciate that many people are accepting of including the PayPal fee with their payments. This fee amounts to just slightly more than 3% of your work total. And it’s an easy way to keep money ahead on your account for those last minute registration emergencies. A couple of situations happen fairly often and cause delays. Families with multiple sheep owners will have several ownership transfers so that they can maximize their sheep show benefits. At the end of the season, often the sheep are not transferred back to the main breeder in the family. The following spring, it is common for the lambs’ mothers to be owned by someone other than the breeder on the application. This results in a need to contact the breeder and sort out who owns the dam and usually ends with the need to transfer the lambs causing the breeder extra time and expense in getting papers for the season. So, if you’ve transferred ewes to the chil-dren’s names so they could show them, re-member to transfer them back if you want to be the breeder and owner listed on their lambs’ papers. I was surprised this year how many breed-ers had to send registration papers in for a new ear tag number. After questioning them, I learned that many breeders use a federal premise ID or scrapie tag as their main ear tag. That works fine until the tag is lost as often happens. Since it is costly to reorder a new scrapie tag with the original number,

most people just use a new scrapie number. Then it is necessary to update the registra-tion record at a cost of $3 to match the ID on the sheep. That also costs time and gener-ally causes a fair amount of confusion in one’s flock records, creating other problems. After inquiring of several breeders, it seems like the most successful method of ear tagging for simple record keeping is to use a separate flock tag which can be easily replaced if lost AND using a matching scrapie tag number. In most states, scrapie tags can be ordered with custom individual numbers for the year. Some breeders take it one step further by using an additional tag suitable for use with baby lambs, usually rototags or even small metal ones, with the SAME number. This way the sheep is known its whole life by one tag number. It should be noted that scrapie tag num-bers are not required on the registration applications and the majority of breeders do not provide a scrapie tag number at the time of registration.

The Junior Breeding Sheep Show will run all day on Sunday, Nov. 11. Three rings will be utilized this year in an effort to keep the show to a manageable length. The National Junior Shropshire Show will run on Sunday, Nov. 11 as the last breed of the day in the north ring. Rob Zelinski will be sorting the entries. ASRA and NAILE offer a total of $2075 in premiums for this show. The ASRA is also providing extra funds to allow an ad-ditional ewe lamb class if necessary. At the conclusion of the Junior Breeding Sheep Shows, the Champion Shropshire Ewe will be eligible to compete for the $1000 Supreme Champion Ewe Award. Another excellent Shropshire entry is expected for the National Shropshire Show on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 8 a.m. Evan Snyder of Atglen, Penn. will serve as the official judge. $3645 is offered in premiums. While you are in Louisville this November, be sure to take in the Fourth Stars of Lou-isville Shropshire Sale on Saturday, Nov. 10. The sale arena is just off the sheep facility, near the office trailer. We have been very fortunate to have been able to retain the opening time slot in the day’s sale events. We will begin our morning with the entries being evaluated at 8:30 a.m. The entries will be available for buyers’ inspection. The order of sale will be posted and the sale will follow as soon as possible after 10 a.m. in order to maintain the schedule of the remaining breed sales of the day. Danny Westlake of Marysville, Ohio will serve as auctioneer. Terms of sale are cash or good check paid on sale day. If you are un-able to attend the sale in person, any mem-ber of the sale committee can handle a bid for you but requests for mail bids should be directed to Sale Manager, Becky Peterson. The sale committee consists of Chairman Randy Rife, Bob Johnson, Steve Majchrzak, Jim Brandt, Dennis Avery and Mark McCabe. As in any other sale, ownership transfers will be made in the ASRA office after the sale and will be returned to the buyer as soon as possible. Nancy Miniter, a Massachusetts sheep breeder, vet tech and ultrasound technician, will scan ewes for pregnancy status. The re-sulting information will be announced at the sale block. Consignors have been asked to guarantee that sale entries are free of the spider gene and be resistant to Scrapie by being either QR or RR at codon 171. A vet-erinarian will be on hand to issue health cer-tificates. If your state requires an entry per-

Stars SaleofLouisvillemit, please contact your state veterinarian’s office ahead of time to make the necessary arrangements. All sheep will be identified by a USDA approved ear tag or tattoo. For a few other sale perks, consignors will be able to nominate ewe lambs entered in this sale to be eligible to compete in the fourth Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity in 2013, if purchased by youth buyers. Also, sale management has been able to allow consign-ors to retain rights to show their entries in the Junior Shropshire Show on Sunday, Nov. 11 and/or the open show on Tuesday Nov. 13. This encourages the breeder to consign a sheep that he considers worthy of show-ing in the National Show in Louisville and making that quality available to buyers. We will assist purchasers who are not exhibitors in obtaining an early release for purchased animals only after the junior or open show if the animal is entered. Also, with exhibitors attending from across the country, consign-ors and the sale committee will work with buyers needing transportation of sheep pur-chased at the sale. A sale catalog may be obtained by con-tacting ASRA secretary and Sale Manager Becky Peterson at 413-624-9652 or [email protected]. The catalog is also avail-able on the Shropshire website www.shrop-shires.org. Consignors will be encouraged to provide photos of consignments ahead of time to be posted on the website with the sale catalog. So, be sure to join us in Louisville in No-vember for the Stars of Louisville Shropshire Sale. It is just another good reason to come and celebrate our 128th year of Shropshire sheep in the United States!

Illinois State Fairgrounds

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. Present were President Darrell Dockter, Vice President Brad Slutz, Alan Bruhin, Jim Percival, Carol Rueber, Re Call, Sandy Cross, Gary Brockmann, Bob Johnson, Norm Jack-son and Mark McCabe. Becky Peterson was present as secretary. Not attending were Cody Hiemke, Tim Roberts and Bob Dins-more. Becky had previously distributed the min-utes of the teleconference held on Jan. 22. Jim Percival moved to accept the report. Motion seconded by Brad Slutz. Motion passed. Becky then presented the Treasurer’s Re-port as of May 31. It showed a net loss of $4817.83. She noted that the subsequent three weeks has brought in significantly more income. The balance sheet showed a sum of $39,488.35 in assets. Membership payments are down slightly. Registrations are down from this time last year by 44 head to 1253. Transfers are up by 15%. Discussion followed regarding some of the different ac-counts in the report. She reported on the Revolving Funds which are some of the ac-counts that are earmarked for specific activi-ties or purposes. This shows the total funds of $6948.14 accumulating since 2008. Budget Committee – Re Call. She asked that the Treasurer submit monthly financial reports (Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss, and Check Ledger) to the Finance Committee and the President. She noted that a new an-nual budget will be set by the end of the year. Operating committees are asked to submit their plans for 2013 as soon as possible to have their needs addressed by the budget. Fundraising Committee – Sandy Cross. He reported several fundraising options were discussed including memorial contributions, weather vanes, basket auctions at major events, coffee mugs, and porch gliders. Any of these items could be added to the items soon to be available on the website. Alan

Bruhin thought he could put together a va-cation package in Tennessee. Mark McCabe moved with a second from Gary Brockmann that Alan research options to be reviewed at the Louisville Board meeting. Perhaps this could be sold or raffled at the 2013 Classic sale. Motion passed. President’s Book Committee – Glenn High is continuing to work on the Presidents Book, the continuation of the 100th year his-tory book. There are several people he has contacted that have not submitted mate-rial. This seems to be a wintertime project. Becky said she would assist in getting this information together. Advertising and Voice Committee – Dar-rell Dockter and Rinda Maddox. Rinda was unable to attend. Darrell reported that ads are selling well but wants to encourage more advertising support. Rinda is doing a good job keeping the magazine nearly flush. She is always looking for photos and articles to publish. The only advertising we pay for is in the Banner and the Shepherd.

Youth, Junior Association & Ambassa-dor— Alan Bruhin. He reported that the Junior Association has been very active and is planning a meeting at the All-American. He submitted for them a proposal for a Starter Flock Program. The Northwest has a very successful program. Different options were discussed. It was noted that a national pro-gram could be complicated to run because of the distances involved. The Junior Associa-tion will finalize plans for this award. Ambassador Jared Bruhin was unable to attend but sent along information for a Youth Mentoring program which would pair new young Shropshire owners with adult or ex-perienced older youth breeders. This would help to support new youth Shropshire proj-ects with advice on management and genet-ics. Mark McCabe moved that the ASRA assist with and support the program. Norm Jackson seconded. Motion passed. Becky will call for available mentors and will also keep a list of new owners from sales etc. and will help to match them up. Alan will submit an article to the next issue of the Voice to de-scribe the program and its requirements. Futurity – Mark McCabe. He reported that it looks like 2012 is on track to surpass 2011. There were 75 ewe lambs nominated at the Classic, 11 at Great Lakes Sale, and several ewe lambs at the Spectacular with Sedalia yet to go. Over 20 yearlings have also been nominated. Performance – Cody Hiemke. He did not attend but had previously noted that the committee did not require any funds from the upcoming budget. NAILE Sale – Becky Peterson. She re-ported that a 10 a.m. Nov. 10 sale has been approved by NAILE.

Old Business Shropshire Store – Jim reports all is set to go except that the artwork has not been approved. Sandy Cross moved with a second from Gary Brockmann to go ahead with the modified 125th Anniversary artwork that had been submitted earlier. Jim would submit the artwork to Team Image and items will be

available on the website soon. Voice schedule for 2013 – The publication schedule for the Voice had been discussed at the January meeting and a motion had been made at that time to delay the May is-sue to June, allowing for more support for the June sales. The motion was tabled as the February issue was already in production so there would be no printed notice to that ef-fect. Jim Percival moved to untable the mo-tion and go forward with three issues per year for 2013 (October, February and June). Bob Johnson seconded this motion. Motion passed. A notice will be printed in the Oc-tober issue noting the change in publication schedule and listing all of the deadlines. Judge Certification – The judge evaluation surveys ceased as of the January meeting. Discussion of this subject has evolved most-ly into a lengthy conversation about Shrop-shire breed type. It was noted that a judge education or certification program would be costly and complicated. Most thought that creating more awareness about Shropshire breed type would help. Darrell suggested an article in the next Voice would be a good start. Jim Percival and Sandy Cross will sub-mit something to Rinda for the October is-sue. Scholarship – Twelve applications have been received. Becky and Mark will review and select top six and send them on to Alan Bruhin. At least two will be awarded and up to four if quality warrants since no applica-tions were received last year. Shearing – There was only one instance at the Classic of excess wool being left on upper rear legs. Consignor took care of it without complaint. Becky noted that she had only a few inquiries about the ruling and that people just wanted clarification. The remind-ers will continue in the Voice so that there are no misunderstandings.

New Business NAILE Flock Trophy – There has been a question about the existence of the McKer-row Trophy for the Best 5 Head at NAILE. It seems that it has not been awarded for

two years. It was determined that the ASRA provides this award. Becky will make sure it is added back this year. Additional promotional display – Becky inquired about having a second display. The current one is contained in a large shipping case which travels well but is expensive to ship. The central US breeders do a great job moving it around but it’s hard to move it to the corners. Perhaps a smaller, more ef-ficient version could be had that would be simpler and more economical to ship. Bob Johnson moved and Alan Bruhin seconded to research a second one and put it into the Promotion Budget for 2013. Motion passed. Indiana Directorship – On behalf of the Indiana Shropshire Association, Norm Jack-son reiterated that Indiana feels it is eligi-ble for two directors. He requested that a committee be formed to investigate options prior to 2014 when the regions are next evaluated for redistricting, according to the Bylaws. More discussion followed. A motion to that effect was made by Norm and sec-onded by Jim Percival. Motion passed. The committee consists of Sandy Cross (Chair), Carol Rueber, Cody Hiemke, and Brad Slutz. Becky will provide membership and registra-tion stats for all of the states and regions for the past three years. The committee will report to the BOD at the Louisville Board meeting. Online Sale – Mark McCabe delivered a proposal from the group that hosts the Spring Fling, an online Shropshire Ewe Lamb Sale in its second year. The proposal is to sell 25 ewe lambs in the sale with the first 16 spots open to the original consigning group and the next nine spots open to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis. Management of the online sales recommends a maximum of 25 head. They would like to have this sale be eligible for Ewe Lamb Futurity Nomina-tions. Discussion followed. Carol Rueber and Gary Brockmann moved to reject the pro-posal, following the original response by the BOD, that it is still an invitational sale if held in this manner. Jim Percival moved to amend the motion to say that if this sale were com-

pletely open to any Shropshire breeder, that it would be considered for Futurity eligibil-ity by the BOD. Motion to amend original motion passed. Then the original motion was voted on and it passed. Next meeting – It was felt that is no need at this time for a conference call meeting be-fore November. If the need should arise, the Executive Board will decide. It was decided to hold the next board meeting at NAILE on Monday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Jim Percival moved that the Annual Meeting of the Mem-bers be held on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. without a meal. Gary Brockmann seconded this motion and it passed. Notice will be posted on the website and in the October Voice. Jim Percival moved to adjourn with no further business to come before the Board. Carol Rueber seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 10:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,Becky Peterson

By Jim PercivalASRA Board Member, Ohio

During the June meeting of the American Shropshire Registry Board of Directors, an excellent discussion was held regarding “ap-propriate” breed character and generally what that means. As a result, we have been asked to prepare a short synopsis of the discussion which will hopefully prompt our members to think about the subject and cre-ate an environment for further discussion. As everyone knows, the Shropshire breed chose to have all animals at an event recog-nized by the National Board presented slick sheared. This has helped our breed in many ways. The sheep being exhibited at major shows and sales, for the most part, are very correct in their overall confirmation and have more muscle and overall thickness than the sheep that were exhibited just a few years ago. There has also been a major growth in the numbers of Shropshires shown at many of our state fairs and other major shows because people can “fit” more sheep in a shorter period of time. Also, many of our youth can fit their own animals and this pro-vides them an opportunity to compete. All of the things mentioned above are positives that have helped to move Shrops forward and bring many new people into our breed. However, we cannot lose our identity. I had a close friend who is a purebred breeder (not Shrops) a few years back tell me that in the future there will be two breeds of sheep; white faced and black faced. Although I disagreed with him at the time, I think that there are those in our industry that would like to see it go that way. That would be a shame for all of us who love the industry in general and Shropshires specifi-cally to see that happen.

The only way that we can maintain our identity is to constantly monitor and edu-cate others as to what proper Shropshire breed type is. I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder as is proper breed char-acter but we MUST maintain a certain base level or we will simply become a black faced sheep. We encourage all of you to take a hard look at your sheep. Do they have wool on their heads and legs? Is their color too light or too dark? What is too light or too dark? Are their ears thick and long, or are they shorter? What about the face shape and size– do the sheep have Roman noses or do they have a more classic Shropshire face? I know that as I look at the brood ewes there are things that I could change with many of them to bring them more in line with what a Shrop should be. With that being said, the Board will con-tinue to explore ways to enhance and cel-ebrate Shropshires. We have a great breed with an excellent group of breeders working to enhance and promote our sheep. Please take a few minutes and think about our breed character issues. I fear if we don’t, our identity will be lost and we will become just another “black faced sheep.”

Thinking about Shropshire Breed Character!

Ohio Classic The Ohio Classic Shropshire Sale con-tinues to be a Classic event. It continues in the Exhibition Building at the Preble Coun-ty Fairgrounds in Eaton, Ohio. Banner Sale Management saw to all of the 12 breed sales there that weekend as part of the Big Ohio Weekend. Evan Snyder of Pennsylvania served as the judge of the 120 head, which showed in the middle of the day on Friday. The Ohio Shrop-shire Breeders Association coordinated the Sale Preview on Saturday morning. All of the ewe classes were lined up in “wether racks” according to their sale order. This makes a very nice way for prospective buyers to in-spect these sheep away from the show ring.

This is a very popular gathering. Danny Westlake of Ohio sold the sale at an average of $715 topping the previous year sale by $130. Ewes sold well with 14 of the 97 females selling for $1000 or more. The sale started with Avery Shropshires’ Champion Ewe and Senior Champion and high-selling ewe, a fall ewe lamb, selling to Mrozinski & Shroyer for $4600. The Reserve Champion and Junior Champion was an early January Ewe Lamb from Rife ewe selling for $1500 to Tim Roberts of Oklahoma. Twenty-two yearling ewes averaged $803.41 with the high seller in the class being an Avery ewe selling to Edison Shippy & family of Indiana for $3000. Willaine Farm of New York sold a $1500 ewe to Avery and Elsbury sold a $1000 ewe to Sean Bryant. Rife had the 2nd fall ewe lamb and Reserve Senior Champi-on. She sold to Alicia Heinecke of Missouri for $800. Other high-selling fall ewes were Step Ahead’s entry going to Maine’s John Cross for $1000, Avery’s ewe going to De-nise Hardisky of Pennsylvania for $1550 and Major’s Show lambs $1450 entry selling to Craig & Andrea King for $1450. Fourteen fall ewe lambs averaged $1044.64. The early January ewe lamb class sold eight lots aver-aging $918.75. Two other ewes broke $1000 in that class. They were Rife’s 2nd place ewe

bringing $1000 from Dalton Hicks of Okla-homa and Elsbury’s 5th ewe going to Jaedyn Slutz of Illinois for $1400. Seventeen Late January Ewe Lambs averaged $698.53 with the top four ringing the $1000 bell. They were a City Limits ewe bringing $1050 from Colby Clark of New Hampshire, and three Erik Mrozinski ewes in a row bringing $1550 from Dalton Hicks, $1350 from Courtney Sargent of Ohio and $1350 from Ohio’s Seth Evans. The Early February class produced the Reserve Junior Champion from Erik Mroz-inski. She sold to Wayne Brooks for $900. The 16 ewes in that class averaged $496.88. Twenty late February Ewe lambs finished the ewe portion of the sale averaging $501.25. The winner here was a BWB Farms entry that brought $775 from Alicia Heinecke. The ram portion of the sale sold only 23 head. The Junior and Grand Champion Ram was a January lamb from the City Limits flock. He brought $1400 from Quincy Norman of Illinois. The Reserve and Senior Champion was the high-selling ram that came from Av-ery in the fall class and sold to SS Shrops of Iowa for $2400. The yearling rams averaged $950 on five head. The class winner was a Bechtold entry bringing $1850 from Triple J Farm of Delaware. Anderson’s 5th place ram sold for $1000 to Pence Farm of Ohio. Three more fall lambs followed with a class average of $987.50 Erik Mrozinski’s Reserve Junior Champion January ram sold to Evans Shrop-shires of Ohio for $800. The January class averaged $613.89 on nine rams. Five Febru-ary rams averaged $415 with Ohio’s Harry

Hawkes taking home the Rife class winner for $400. Ohio’s Rife Shropshires was honored to receive the Townsend Best Consignment Award at this sale. As always complete sale results can be seen on www.shropshires.org

Shropshire Spectacular The traditional Shropshire Spectacular National Sale took place at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill. Entry num-bers were down but the sale average con-tinues to be respectable. Forty-four head of Shropshire ram and ewes were ably sorted by judge Bill Buckland. He also judged the Spectacular Junior Show where several youngsters participated. The weather was tolerable in advance of the awful heat that besieged the Midwest shortly after. Shropshire enthusiasts enjoyed a dinner off the grounds and the Illinois Shropshire Association on Friday evening. Four royalty awards were made to the following youths: Molly Woods, Illinois Shropshire Ambas-sador; Sara Nyen, Illinois Shropshire Junior Ambassador; Jaedyn Slutz, Illinois Miss Bo Peep, and Mason Peterson, Illinois Boy Blue. A Silent Auction of several items was held to raise funds for the Illinois Junior events. Many thanks go to so many for their gener-ous donations and purchases. The sale kicked off on Saturday morning with the sale of the Center Stage website ads. Twelve advertisers each won space for a month on the homepage of www.shrop-

Association A year ago, I would not be writing this article. I would not be writing it because I would not be serving as the National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association secretary. Last year at Louisville we started this organiza-tion. For our first year, we have not done much but we have laid roots for the future. We started with T-shirt orders. A National Junior Shropshire Sheep Association logo (shown at right) was developed and used for the shirts. At the sale in Eaton, we had a Junior Association meeting. Junior mem-bers and breeders ate hot dogs thanks to the Ohio Shropshire Breeders Association. There has been much discussion among the Junior Board over the last year and we have many plans for future years. We continue to sell hats to help collect funds. We will be meeting at the North American International Livestock Expo. There will be pizza at 5 p.m., followed by the Junior Association meeting. After the meet-ing, there will be a quiz bowl. At the meet-ing, we will be discussing what we as junior members want to see for the future. There will be elections for each districts’ board representative. I can’t wait to see each and every one of you at NAILE. Enjoy your fall.

Junior Mentoring Program

As the Shropshire Ambassador, one of the things I hope I might be able to accomplish this year was to implement a Junior Mentor-

ing Program. This would be a program where junior Shropshire breeders would be paired with an adult or older teen breeder to serve as a mentor or someone to help assist those younger members. Assistance could be noth-ing more than an occasional phone call to check in and see how things are going, to being able to assist with developing a breed-ing program, or someone who is there to answer questions from the young breeder. This program idea was presented to the Shropshire Board of Directors and they seem very interested in seeing a program of this type developed. For this program to work, it will take a group of Shropshire breeders who are will-ing to invest a small amount of their time into the future of our breed. Each breeder who volunteers to be a part of this program will be given a few young producers in their area to work with. You will just need to be available to help answer questions. Becky will be keeping a list of adult Shrop-shire breeders at her office to pair up with juniors. If you are willing to serve as a men-tor you simply need to let her know. As we begin receiving names we will start the pro-cess of assigning young breeders. For those young breeders currently involved with Shropshires, they will also be given the op-tion of participating in this new program. For any new juniors they will automatically be

Ambassador sought for ASRA Are you an enthusiastic junior member who is excited about the Shropshire breed? Do you have lots of leadership skills, love to speak to groups, like to travel, and have a passion to promote our breed? If so, this is for you. The American Shropshire Regis-try Association is looking for its fourth Ju-nior Ambassador to promote and represent the breed at events throughout the United States. This is to be a one year term to begin at the North American International Livestock Expo to be held in Louisville in November. The selection process will consist of an ap-plication and interview process. Once se-

Four scholarshipsawarded in 2012 Twelve scholarship applications were re-ceived in 2012 and they all showed numer-ous academic, community and Shropshire accomplishments. Since there were no ap-plications received in 2011 or scholarships awarded, a total of four awards were avail-able this year. Scholarships of $400 each are being awarded to Trevor High of McDer-mott, Ohio; Hallie Walker of Williamstown, Mass.; Matthew Dirlam of Mooresville, Ind.; and Emily Petzel of Centuria, Wis. Following you will meet Emily and Mat-thew. Trevor and Hallie will be introduced in the February 2013 issue.

Emily Petzel Emily is the daughter of Mark and Debbie Petzel. She graduated last May from Unity High School in Balsam Lake, Wis. and will at-

tend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she will follow an Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary curriculum. She maintained a high school GPA of 4.0 and was co-valedic-torian of her class. She achieved over 200 hours in Community Involvement and was the Outstanding Science Student in 2011 and 2012. She was an avid FFA student and was a State Star Farmer Finalist in her senior year and participated on the judging teams for three years. She was also active in tennis and the concert band. Here is a portion of her scholarship essay: “I began my involvement with the sheep industry around seven years ago with some crossbred ewes from a local sheep producer. After my first show season with these lambs, I was hooked and have grown my sheep flock ever since. We built our sheep barn when these ewes were getting ready to lamb and our first lamb was born about a half hour after the barn was finished. I have grown my flock to its present state of around 30 brood ewes which is about all our barn can sustain. My dad gave me a patch of his beef

cow pasture for my ewes to graze on so I am also limited by the amount of pasture I am allotted. Of the 30 brood ewes I have 10 purebred Shropshire ewes. Additionally I have eight yearling Shropshires to add to my lambing flock. I began my Shropshire flock when there was an ad for a Shropshire starter flock com-petition here in Wisconsin in 2009. I applied and won and then the project began. I would not be getting my ewe lamb till the next year so I researched Shropshire flocks in the Midwest and purchased two ewe lambs from City Limits Sheep Farm in the fall of 2009. From those two ewe lambs, my flock has extended to what it is now in the spring of 2012. I have attended the Wisconsin State Fair since 2007 and 2010 was my first year bringing Shropshires when I won the Cham-pion Ewe with my City Limits yearling. Besides the state fair, I have gone to the All-American Junior Shows, NAILE, and numerous shows throughout Wisconsin. I spend the summer showing my sheep. Through my involvement with sheep, a group of exhibitors from Polk County, in-cluding myself, started a livestock team. We attend state competitions in Madison and have been teaching ourselves how to win in livestock quiz bowl, skillathon, meats judg-ing, and livestock judging. I have had great

Emily Petzel

success in livestock judging throughout the years and this year our team as qualified for the national competitions in quiz bowl and meats judging so far with livestock judging still coming up. Besides competing, I am also a member of the local sheep groups in Wisconsin In-dianhead Sheep Breeders, Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Coop, and Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association. I am the complete manager of the sheep flock as I own them. I feed the ewes, vaccinate, deworm, shear, up-keep fences, and help with the lambing.”

Matthew Dirlam Matthew Dirlam is of Mooresville, Ind. and the son of John and Carol Dirlam. He is a se-nior at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. and is studying Agricultural Economics. He currently holds a GPA of 3.22. In high school, Matt lettered in basketball, cross country and track and field where he was named the most valuable runner. He was awarded the Academic Honors Diploma upon graduating. As a college student, Matt has been on the Dean’s List, participates on the track and is an agronomy member as well as the Block and Bridle and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Apply for 2013 Scholarships Two $400 awards will be available in 2013. Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships as long as they are currently enrolled in an under-graduate program and directly involved with Shropshire sheep. Ap-plications are available on www.shropshires.org and are due June 1st, 2013. Only com-plete applications will be considered which will include official transcripts of all high school and college work completed along with two letters of recommendation for-warded to the office of the ASRA.

“My family has bred Shropshire sheep since 1963. They have been a huge part of our family and my life as far back as I can remember. My grandpa, father and I cur-rently have a flock of 15 registered Shrop-shire brood ewes. My duties within the flock include establishing a breeding program for those 15 ewes, feeding the ewes along par-turition, and lambing the ewes. When the lambs are on the ground I do all the process-ing (tubing, CD&T shots, docking, castrating, tagging; etc.). After weaning I also make the decisions on which lambs we will sell for market/show and which lambs I will show throughout the summer. Some of my other duties include establishing a feeding program for all of our sheep, daily feeding and wa-tering, taking lambs to market, managing our hay operation, and maintaining our barns and sheep facilities. I also train our sheep for show. Some of the shows that I have exhib-ited at include the Indiana State Fair, Ohio State Fair, All-American Junior Show, the N.A.I.L.E., and several county fairs through-out the state of Indiana. Raising Shropshire sheep has had a huge impact on my life. It has taught me many life traits such as hard work and responsibility, as raising any form of livestock is a 24 hour, 365 days a year job. The end result is the most rewarding and satisfying of any activity I can imagine. Raising sheep has also made me make many sacrifices, but it has all been worth it as our sheep has enabled me to have built relationships with my grandma, grandpa, and dad. One of my fondest memories from my childhood is of me and my grandma going

Introduction

In early April Jim Kipp in Wisconsin called and said he and Terri were downsizing and moving 100 miles south to a smaller farm and into a single floor home. He sent me his collection of Shropshire Sale catalogs and memorabilia. In this package were cata-logs from the Shultz 1962 production sale and January 1963 dispersal. This fall marks the 50th Anniversary of these events. I had never seen these books before and were most excited. Lowell Douce bought Lot 120 in the dispersal, Shultz 62-50 and Emil Hartz-ell bought Lot 138, Shultz 62-100, both ram lambs. We happened to later purchase sons of each of these rams that really advanced our young flock. Lowell shared with me that young Kim Titus was sitting on the front row and bought an outstanding ewe lamb for $50 that day. The older breeders knew she was super, but let her sell to Kim to help him and his dad, Russ, build a flock that, in a few years, all went back to that one powerful ewe. I’m sure flocks from all over the country were influenced from those foundation ge-netics that day.

At the Ohio State Fair this summer, I men-tioned to Everett Douce, Lowell’s brother, that my next history article was on Farrell Shultz. He said Farrell and the English ge-netics he introduced to the breed added 40 pounds to all the Shropshires across the breed during that era. I also want to credit Doug Chambers and his “The First Hundred Years” Shropshire Centennial book for the basis of this article. Doug did a magnificent job!

A Purebred Man

Farrell Shultz of Bunker Hill Farm, DeGraff, Ohio ul-

timately established a reputation as one of the premier all-around purebred men in America. From the late 1940s until his dis-persal sale in 1962, nobody seriously chal-lenged his superiority as a breeder, showman or Shropshire promoter, but Farrell “paid his dues;” starting at the bottom as a rank 4-H boy, he tried for 10 years before getting his first county fair blue ribbon. He came into the national circuit against skilled, long-established flockmasters like McKerrow, Iroquois, Rotter, Brown and Moore at a time when Shrops were still the biggest, most competitive classes. Gradually

he gained a “toe hold” then his “foot in the door” and ultimately domination. At many shows in the late 1950s if it weren’t Shultz, it wasn’t winning. He began biennial produc-tion sales in 1952 that soon were setting re-cord prices. Farrell was a pioneer, a believer, and a pro-moter for the judicious use of production records as one tool in the selection process toward functional breed improvement. His record system was a model for the times and he worked closely with Prof. Ralph Grimshaw and the Ohio Sheep Improve-ment program. Performance scores were listed in his sale catalogues. From 1950 through 1956 one of his ewes, “Tracy 792’ (by an imported sire) estab-lished a Shrop production record that has never been equalled: in seven years she raised two sets of quadruplets, three sets of trip-

lets, a pair of twins and a single; 20 lambs for a lifetime 286%. He routinely exposed his ewe lamb re-placements to rams and thus, he felt, identi-fied his most prolific strains. These geneti-cally superior, but “milked down” yearlings were unattractive to prospective buyers who visited the farm, allowing him to replen-ish the ewe flock from his most productive blood lines. If a ram lamb had satisfactory perfor-mance scores, was well grown-out, correct in his makeup and considered a purebred stud prospect, Farrell christened him with a “flockmaster” trademark. He maintained 100 brood ewes and bred them to five stud rams so he could offer variations of type and lineage to his customers. He was topping many shows with the

“American Type” by the time the first McKerrow imports became available but he immediately began experiment-ing with some of these bloodlines. Not wholly satisfied, he went to England in December, 1951 and hand picked two rams that had a lasting influence on the breed. Imports ‘Sir Winston’ sired the first modern International cham-pion ram with English breeding and his picture was used as the proto-type Shropshire for 20 years. “Tern Cambridge” had been champion at the British Royal and weighed 314 pounds on arrival out of quarantine. When mated to Farrell’s battery of ewes he proved to be prepotent for performance, uniformity and breed type, and his progeny brought then-record prices and influenced nearly every progressive Shrop-shire flock in the United States. At the 1957 Ohio State Fair the top three Shrops in every class, with two exceptions, were sired by “Flockmasters” and his 1958 sale catalogue listed as ref-erence sires nine International champions that had been used at Bunker Hill in the last 10 years. The 1962 Shultz Shropshire Sale catalogue.

Page 57: October 2012 Shropshire Voice

In 1962, at the pinnacle of his success, Farrell was forced by physical problems to disperse his flock and quit farming. He moved to town and became an insurance executive. For 30 years his often-hu-morous, always provocative articles in sheep publications delighted readers. Respected and popular nationwide, his portrait was hung in the Ohio State University Ag-ricultural Hall of Fame in the early 1950s. He always stressed and lived by his code of integrity. His reputation and his skill as a breeder and showman contributed more than any-thing else to the ultimate in-tegration and acceptance of the (old) “new-type English strain” modern American Shropshire.

Farrell’s son, Bill, as a boy showing in Chicago. Bill and his son, Joe, developed one of the very top Ramboullet flocks in America, then sold out only to buy the entire Riverwood Suffolk flock. For several years Bill and his wife, Susan, have focused on breeding production oriented at Bunker Hill Farm. Farrell’s guidance and influ-ence was definitely passed on.

Dear Rinda, Bob and I especially enjoyed the article by Randy Rife concerning the heart-wrenching decisions that come with dispersing the fam-ily farm (May 2012 Voice). Fortunately for me when my mom passed in 2007 my brother and sister had already been operating their Belgian horse semen lab (Orndorff ’s Bel-gians) from the home farm and wanted to continue. My nephews (sons of my sister who passed in 2003) and I wanted nothing more than to see them continue the draft
