Each week I write this little column and go to great lengths to tell everyone what a wonderful place Chautauqua County is to play. Now that summer’s at her peak, the opportunities for good times and making memories seem endless. All one has to do is visit the TourChautauqua.com website and pull up their excellent events calendar. It is chock full of things to do and places to see and serves as a roadmap for all of us lucky enough to be down in this little corner of the southern tier. From Opera in Chautauqua this weekend to Broadway in Fredonia next and a week in-between full of the Chautauqua County Fair! This weekend is no exception! Just take a look at what the music lover in you is in for over the next few days. Coming Friday to the Chautauqua Institution is Tommy James

and the Shonndells. Over on the floating stage in Bemus on Saturday there will be five chicks rocking and harmonizing in the Special “Mustang Sally” Event and there’s an awesome tribute to Chicago (also on the floating stage) on Sunday. And let’s not forget the Chautauqua Symphony’s weekly performance at the Institution every Saturday. This is just the tip of the summer iceberg. There’s something for everyone – from the annual “Round the Lake Garage Sale” to the Chautauqua County Fair – farmer’s markets, craft shows, a Jamestown Jammers baseball game – there’s simply too much going on to list in this brief space. It would seem we’ve got a lot going on this weekend, yes? Well, rally the troops, get off your collective keisters and come enjoy all the fun things our County has to offer!

Letter from JSBIASkating Club to Remain in Jamestown

Recently it was reported that the Jamestown Skating Club was leaving Jamestown. This was not a correct statement. The Jamestown Skating Club (JSC), a non-profit organization is remaining in Jamestown, New York. The Skating Academy, a for- profit organization run by Kirk Wyse and Lenel van den Berg made the business decision to move its operation to Buffalo, NY. The members of the Jamestown Skating Club will continue to skate at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena (JSBIA). Lindsay Marzec along with a number of junior coaches will work with the JSC skaters. The club expects to add to

its coaching staff in the very near future and build upon the great program that has been established here in Jamestown. The club has many upcoming events; this month JSC skaters will compete in Mentor, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. On August 4th and 5th two senior level skaters will compete at Showcase Nationals to be held in Cleveland, Ohio. Also, the 16th Annual Skate Chautauqua competition will be held August 12th and 13th at the JSBIA. In addition JSC plans to continue the Learn to Skate program that runs on Wednesday evenings September through June. The management at JSBIA has been very helpful during

this transitional period; General Manager Mike Ferguson and CEO Kurt Silcott have answered many questions and helped the club schedule ice time. Kirk and Lenel have also been supportive and are welcome to coach on all ice contracted by the Jamestown Skating Club. They are respected international coaches and the club values their expertise. Kirk and Lenel will always be considered part of the Jamestown Skating Club family. The Jamestown Skating Club will have to do additional fundraisers to afford ice time and to host home events; they hope Chautauqua County will continue to support their organization.

Letter from AcademySkating Directors, Lenel van den Berg and Kirk Wyse Issue Statement

Due to recent, quickly developing opportunities, we have decided to relocate our program to Buffalo. Because of our deep and long-standing involvement with the area, our decision was not lightly made, nor was it without a fair amount of sadness. The Skating Academy has had a great run here in Jamestown. We are extremely proud of our skaters and their accomplishments. Skaters have represented Jamestown on the national and international level in competitions throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. We have produced over 100 skaters who have

passed the “gold” test. The “gold” test is a rigorous set of standards, representing the highest level of achievement and skill, and is sanctioned by the U.S. Figure Skating. Working together with Mary Handley and the Jamestown Skating Club, we have hosted the U.S. Junior Nationals, three regional championships, as well as fifteen Skate Chautauqua’s and twelve Winter Games competitions. The crown jewel of the program, “Excellence on Ice” sparked professional performing careers for many of our skaters who have toured the world with such programs as Disney on Ice and the Ice

Capades. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments here, especially considering our humble beginnings at Allen Park. We are also grateful and humbled by the tremendous support that we have always received from the community and our “skating family”. A special thanks is in order to the Gebbie Foundation, for creating the world’s finest skating arena; to the arena management, which was instrumental in creating an unparalleled work environment, and to the local businesses and sponsors who generously supported us throughout the years.

Jamestown Skating ClubLessons Resume for Figure Skaters and Hockey Skaters

The Jamestown Savings Bank Arena is pleased to announce an agreement with the Jamestown Skating Club to continue to provide Jamestown and Jamestown area residents with top-notch programs for young figure skaters and hockey skaters. Ellen Darrow, President of the Skating Club, is currently evaluating the best ice times for the skaters to continue their tutelage under Coach Lindsay Marzec. Currently, the Skating Club meets on Tuesdays and Wednesday from 3:30 pm until

6:30 pm. Kurt Silcott, CEO of The Jamestown Savings Bank Arena stated, “We anticipate that they will take more hours in due time. At this point, the club is going to survey the skaters and coaches and see what times will work best. We will do our best to accommodate them once we know the times and number of hours they want.” The Skating Club also has plans to continue the “Learn To Skate” program in the fall. The program will also include, “Learn to Skate for Hockey.” Head Coach of the Jamestown

Ironmen, Dan Daikawa, has agreed to help with the program. “It’s great to see a tenant of the building take this type of ownership in the community,” said Silcott. “Coach Daikawa has volunteered himself, as well as his players to help the program grow. We’re all looking forward to having him as a part of The Skating Club’s activities.” Anyone interested in information for membership in the Skating Club can call 716-640-4864 and leave a message or call the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena for info.

Like most county fairs, the Chautauqua County Fair harbors a very eclectic blend of exhibits and entertainments. Where else can you find Demolition Derbies, harness racing, handmade quilts, exhibition quality turnips and circus acts? The Chautauqua County Fair offers one of the best summer entertainment values for families of any size. The “pay one price” ticket policy of $9.00 midweek tickets and $10.00 weekend tickets provide attendees admission to all the events (with the exception of reserved seating for the Demolition Derby). This may explain the popularity of the fair with 60 to 80 thousand people attending the week long fair every year. The Chautauqua County Fair proves you don’t have to travel very far to enjoy the advantages of the local community. To see the full schedule of events and purchase tickets go to www.cahutauquacountyfair.org.

Jamestown Municipal BandPerforms this Thursday as Part of Riverwalk Concert Series

The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Riverwalk Concert Series continues this Thursday, July 21, 2011 from 7-9pm in Brooklyn Square with the Jamestown Municipal Band. The band will perform along the riverwalk, adjacent to the JAMA Riverwalk Center. All performances and parking are free to the public. “This will be our third concert of the series. The Municipal Band has 50 plus members and always play a good show”, said Ashley Anderson, Special Events Coordinator. The Riverwalk Concert Series was only going to contain 4 concerts this year until we spoke with the Jamestown Municipal Band and found out they were available to perform. The Jamestown Municipal Band is a musical organization

that has been in existence for the past 58 years, performing weekly concerts at the Goranson Band Shell. Membership in the band include students, housewives, blue collar workers, white collar workers, professional people and music educators both retired and active. The band welcomes anyone that can perform on a wind instrument or percussion instrument. Each concert the band performs has a specific theme. Director Richard Lundquist selects music according to the theme. The theme for this week’s concert is “Music for a Summer Night”. These weekly concerts are sponsored by the City of Jamestown, Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation, American Federation of

Musicians, Local 134, and many local businesses. Through the years, the Jamestown Municipal Band has performed parades at local communities and North East Pennsylvania, Alleghany State Park, Buffalo Veteran’s Hospital, the Amphitheater at Chautauqua and the floating stage in Bemus Point. Within the bands fifty-eight year history they have had five directors: Keith Emmanuelson, Al Smeragliuolo, Russell Germaine, Cecil Adams, and the present director Richard Lundquist. “The Jamestown Municipal Band, is yet another fine example of the musical talent we have here in Jamestown,” said Exec. Director Lee Harkness. “Let the band play on!”

Letter from Enthused Skier“A Skier’s Salute to Bemus Point”

“Did you know any of these water skiers” was written in black magic marker on an easel board display. It was the first image I approached when attending the July 8-9 Chautauqua Lake Antique Boat Show in Bemus Point, New York. Okay, actually the display was my second image; the first being a panoramic view from the Village Casino deck of the moored antique and classic boats. Once on the dock through, my attention was drawn to this easel display which rest inside of a rare 1957 Yellow Jacket Center Deck Catalina with a 1958 35 Hp Johnson Golden Javelin Outboard Motor. Being a water skier, my interest was piqued to read about this wood outboard boat used by such racing enthusiasts as Roy Roger and the Chautauqua Lake Water Ski Club in its 3rd Annual 1958 Water Ski Circus in Bemus Point. A black arrow pointed down to the waterskiing program and the “Clowns on Jump” skiers for John Maxwell, Rod Anderson and Rog Anderson. Another arrow pointed to the “Bearded Lady” Barry Brown (rather ugly, I may say.) These names were unknown to my wife and I who are from out of town. The program noted: together for the “jumping” main event; Rod with Jackie Gamble on ”Doubles” and John on the “Turnarounds.” Further reading listed these names and credits for other ski events: John with the “Color Guard,” Road as the “Shell Man” and Rog as “Emmett Kelly.’ But who was Emmett Kelly? A quick google search told he was “Weary Willy”, a clown who performed for years with Ringling Bros., and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In 1956, he was the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team mascot, so he may have been the main attraction of the Water Ski Circus (like “Corky the Clown” was to Cypress Gardens in Florida in the ‘60’s). There would be no clowning around with the Chautauqua

Lake Ski Club; the Catalina was advertised as a “fast, level-planning, brilliant performer.” A similar tow boat, the Penn Yan (NY) Swift, outfitted with an Evinrude Lark or Mercury outboard motor, was used by ski schools in the 1950’s which helped to promote regions hosting of national waterskiing championships. While photographing the Catalina, I noticed in the background the stem of a

wooden inboard. The red with blue burgee deck flag branded a Chris-Craft and on close inspection, revealed a 1959, 17-foot ski boat named ‘First Date’. It was Chris-Craft’s first model year boat for a center pull, ski tow pylon, introduced to compete against the 17-foot Correct Craft and the 16-foot Century Resorter; the latter,

Before exiting the Casino docks, I stopped again to admire the skiing props aboard ‘First Date’. On the rear bench red seat cushion, a yellow tow bar handle, floater and yellow rope lead to a “vinateg metal, hand rotary ski tow rope reel”, a collectior’s item all in itself. A fitting conclusion to our ‘first date’ to the Chautauqua Lake Twin Tier Chapter. As a waterskier, I give a skier’s salute to Bemus Point. July 25-31 Welcomes Week-Long Celebration of Rural Culture

National Acts Hit Jamestown August 3-7Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy Features Joan Rivers, Paula Poundstone & More

The Lucille Ball – Desi Arnaz Center partners with San Francisco-based company Rooftop Comedy to present a festival of national comedic talent in honor of Lucille Ball. “We know that Lucy and Desi’s intentions were for their legacy to live on in the form of living, breathing comedy

that would be as progressive and contemporary as they were,” said Executive Director Journey Gunderson. In fact, the concept of a comedy festival in her legacy was discussed with Lucille Ball shortly before her death in 1989, and was the idea that most resonated with her. As the world’s largest

producer of interactive comedy programming, Rooftop Comedy works with over 4,500 comics nationwide and is well-positioned to curate a comedy lineup comprised of both rising stars and national headliners. The company’s experience in event production includes large-scale events such as the Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival, the National College Comedy Competition presented by TBS and CMT’s Next Big Comic. CEO of Rooftop Media, Will Rogers remarked, “It’s a great feeling to use our expertise in stand-up to gather people together in memory of one of comedy’s most memorable figureheads. We hope to work with the Lucy-Desi Center in a long partnership of bringing groundbreaking comedy to Jamestown.”As a main headliner, the Festival presents comedic icon, Joan Rivers, on Thursday, August 4th at 8pm at the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Rivers was the only guest host ever to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”, a host of her own late night show on FOX, winner of an Emmy for her work on daytime television and has 50 years of stand-up experience. Rivers actually co-starred with Lucille Ball in an episode of “Here’s Lucy” during which the two reportedly had great respect and affinity for one another. Paula Poundstone joins the Festival lineup as the headlining act on Saturday, August 6th at 8pm at the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Poundstone has two HBO stand-up specials under

her belt along with a self-titled show on ABC and numerous appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman” and “Sesame Street”. In addition to her chops in stand-up, Poundstone is an accomplished author and a panelist for National Public Radio. Audiences will enjoy Poundstone’s sharp wit and hilarious take on any subject, from politics to housecats. In addition to comedy veterans, the Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy features some of the fastest rising stars in comedy today. Visitors can enjoy fresh talent at the Rooftop Comedy Showcase on Friday, August 5th at 8pm at the Reg Lenna Civic Center including performances from comics Nate Bargatze, Costaki Economopoulos, Christina Pazsitzky and Dave Thomason. Rooftop Comedy ran an open call for submissions and received interest from hundreds of professional comics across the country. After careful review, comics from NYC, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles were invited to perform at the Festival. Hailing from Old Hickory, TN and now residing in New York City, Nate Bargatze is a young comic who has quickly gained momentum in the comedy world. He has his own Comedy Central special, has appeared twice on “Late Nite with Conan O’Brien” and, in 2010, took the top prize in both New York’s Comedy Festival and the Boston Comedy Festival. Bargatze performs all over the country but the Festival marks his first time in Jamestown, on which he comments, “I am really excited to be a part of the celebration of

Lucy’s 100th Birthday. I grew up watching the re-runs of I Love Lucy and if I can manage to be only half as funny as Lucille Ball was, well, then I’ll have a great career.” Christina Pazsitzky, from Los Angeles, also contributes to the showcase lineup. Pazsitzky has been a regular guest on the E! show “Chelsea Lately” and was a finalist on Season 6 and 7 of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”. After a quick two weeks of law school, Christina committed herself fully to stand-up comedy and now performs around the country and has entertained troops in the Middle East, Africa and South Korea. Costaki Economopoulos joins the lineup as a favored fixture from New York City comedy scene. A talented performer and writer, Costaki’s jokes have appeared on “The Tonight Show”, “The Late Late Show” and on programs for BET and MTV. Aside from featured shows at the Civic Center, the Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy presents comedy in additional venues including a free Comedy Happy Hour at Jamestown’s City Hall Plaza, Friday (5:30-6:30pm) and Saturday (6:00-7:00pm) and affordable late night showcases held at the Tropicana Room in the Lucy-Desi Center on Friday and Saturday (10:30pm-12:00am). The festival has also attracted comedy-veteran, Tammy Pescatelli, who resides nearby in Meadville, PA. Pescatelli was a finalist on season 2 of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” which solidified her as one of the sharpest women in the

comedy world. Tammy has appeared twice as a guest on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and recently was featured in her own special for Comedy Central. Pescatelli’s newest endeavor is starring in WE tv’s “A Stand Up Mother” where she attempts to balance her family and her growing career with a lot of laughs. Coincidentally, the show was originally pitched as a modern day “I Love Lucy”, only Tammy is Desi, trying to keep her husband, Luca, out of the act. Pescatelli greatly looks forward to her involvement in the Festival which includes a performance on Saturday, August 6th at 10:30pm in the Tropicana Room, and says, “Like all of America, I love Lucy. The fun is going to be non-stop all weekend, so eat your Vitameatavegamin!” Who else will perform at the Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy? Rooftop Comedy and the Lucy-Desi Center have brought in additional stand-up talents including Lamont Price from Boston, Jamie Ward from Atlanta, Justin Schlegel from Los Angeles and a few additional names to be announced. Schedule info and all tickets are available on the Festival website: www.LucyComedyFest.com The Lucille Ball - Desi Arnaz Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to preserve the legacy of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz by enriching the world through the healing powers of love and laughter through its commitment to the development of the comedic arts.

As a main headliner, the Festival presents comedic icon, Joan Rivers, on Thursday, August 4th at 8pm at the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Rivers was the only guest host ever to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”, a host of her own late night show on FOX, winner of an Emmy for her work on daytime television and has 50 years of stand-up experience. Established and aspiring artists are invited to join a day of creativity, history and fun! Portage Hill Art Gallery is sponsoring its annual Portage Trail Paint-Out on Saturday, July 30th (Rain date is July 31st). The gallery first sponsored this event 15 years ago and, since then, Paint-Out events have draw plein air painters from as far away as New York City. Artists are asked to sign into Portage Hill Gallery anytime after 6AM on Saturday, July 30th before heading out to paint anywhere along Rte. 394, the historic Portage Trail. This route, which includes both the Mayville Beach and Harbor on Chautauqua Lake as well as Barcelona Beach and Harbor on Lake Erie, is both beautiful and historically significant. The Portage Trail was first developed and used by Native Americans as a portage route between Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake. French explorers discovered it, and a French military unit worked to turn it into a military road just prior to the French and Indian War. In addition to the harbors, artists can now find inspiration

in rolling farmers’ fields complete with farm animals, Mayville and Westfield historic houses, the Westfield Arts and Crafts Fair and Farmer’s Market, two train/trolley stations, grape industry processing factories, beautiful gardens, vineyards and the Chautauqua Gorge along this route. During the Paint Out, artists create until 2 PM when they will return to the Portage Hill Art Gallery and set up their finished pieces for a Wet Paint sale that the public is invited to attend. All these events are free and sponsored by the gallery as a way of celebrating the growing art awareness and art community along the Rte. 394 Art Corridor. All interested people are invited to participate as artists or as spectators. For more information, please contact Audrey or Donald Dowling at Portage Hill Gallery. The Gallery is located on Rte. 394 midway between Mayville and Westfield, NY. since 1954, being the official towboat of the American Water Ski Association. The 185 Hp V-8 engine made the Chris-Craft sport boat an All-American, whose market entry was indicative of the changes evolving and waterskiing. The interior of ‘First Date’ was upholstered in burgundy, however, the tow pylon was missing. I had last seen one of these Chris-Craft’s at the 2006 Skaneateles Lake Finger Lakes Chapter Boat Show, where John Hawbecker of South Carolina showed his ski boat ‘Infatuation’. His boat restoration project took seven years and $35,000. Owners have the passion for restoring classics and their fine work does not go unnoticed. Jack Savage, author

of ‘Chris Craft of the 1950’s’, included in his book on page 88 a photograph of Hawbecker’s ‘Infatuation’, along with another 1959 Chirs-Craft ski boat named ‘Miss Ski Tow. (c2002). At the 2006 Skaneateles Lake show, I pointed this picture out to Hawbecker, who unaware of it, bought a book. The Chautauqua Lake Boat Show also had a second 17-foot Chris-Craft Ski Boat built in 1960. The interior bench seats, engine hatch and sides were vinyl upholstered in an antique white with avocado. The ski tow pylon was there. The show exhibited many museum-quality, antique and classic wooden boats, some of which could be used as ski boats. The program listed forty-two boats, although it seemed like there was more. Three-fourths shown in the water, the remainder viewable on trailer; sixteen boats from Ohio and eight boats

from Pennsylvania. A pair of antique wooden Grissly waterskis laid parallel to the starboard gunwale with the underside of the ski tips resting on the back of the driver’s seat and the bottoms on the floor board. As timing would have it, two men walked past the boat with one remarking to the other, he used to ski on the same type of water skis being pulled behind a boat driven by his father. A fitting conclusion to our ‘first date’ to the Chautauqua Lake Twin Tier Chapter. As a waterskier, I give a skier’s salute to Bemus Point. K. Bamerick, Baldwinsville, NY

Aug. 3 - Aug. 7. But it’s not just a birthday celebration; it’s a comedy festival. It’s an impressive one at that. Journey Gunderson, Executive Director of the Lucy-Desi Center for Comedy, has informed me of the festival line-up and the events that have greatly exceeded my expectations. The bigger, more robust schedule includes; Joan Rivers, who has worked with Lucy, Story Pirates, whose gotten national attention from Jon Stewart on Larry King, Paula Poundstone, named one of Comedy Central’s 100 greatest comics of all time, and the Rooftop Comedy group (Nate Bargatze, winner of both NYC and Boston Comedy Festivals, Christina Pazsitzky, featured numerously on “Chelsea Lately”, and Costaki Economopoulos, featured in his segment on the syndicated Bob & Tom Radio Show). Being a local myself I have

never noticed the extent of the national attention that this town receives based on it being the hometown of Lucille Ball. I had the opportunity to ask Gunderson if she felt that not enough locals embrace the Lucy Fest. “Yes. And I’ll say that because I know I was guilty of the same thing.” she responded. “We forget how big of a deal Lucille Ball is throughout the world. We have 20,000 people that came through the museum last year and about 90 percent of them are from out of town.” The Lucy-Desi foundation has really pushed this year to make Lucy’s birthday celebration into the annual comedy festival that Lucille Ball, herself, wanted it to be. The foundation has spoken with nationally known comedians that were thrilled at the opportunity to perform and help nourish the comedy festival to target the general public as well as Lucy fans. The foundation is also working on the goal of breaking the Guinness World Record for most people dressed as Lucy! All are welcome to be a part of the Guinness World Record and it

only cost $5 and it includes your costume. This event will be on Lucy’s birthday; Saturday, Aug. 6th. Local business and teams will be supporting the goal such as skate shop, Suburban Blend and roller derby team, Babes of Wrath by skating through the closed streets of Jamestown. “The number to break is big but it’s very doable” Gunderson said. For more information visit www.lucycomedyfest.com or call 716-484-0800. “Rooftop Comedy is proud to share in the Lucille Ball 100th Birthday Celebration by partnering with the Lucy Desi Center for Comedy to co-produce a stellar festival this August. It’s a great feeling to be able to use our expertise in talent selection and festival production to gather people together in memory of one of comedy’s most memorable figureheads. We hope to work with the Lucy Desi Center in a long partnership of bringing groundbreaking comedy to Jamestown, NY.” -- Will Rogers, CEO and Co-Founder of Rooftop Media

place outdoors so that people may enjoy the beautiful summer night. However, if the weather appears to be iffy, a tent will be put up. On the evening of the Corn Moon Dinner, guests can begin arriving around 6:00 p.m. and dinner should start around 6:30 p.m., said Elizabeth Bares, co-founder of the Corn Moon Dinner and chapter leader of Slow Food Southern Tier. For the event, three chefs have volunteered their time to create delicious foods just for you. Garrett Taylor, co-founder of the Corn Moon Dinner, is one of the three chefs that will be preparing the Corn Moon Dinner. He is a Sous chef at Three Sisters

Café at the Seneca Allegany Casino. Before, Chef Taylor worked in kitchens throughout Ithaca and Allegany, N.Y. The other two chefs are Bret Odorisio, assistant general manager of the Athenaeum Hotel, and Chef Ross E. Warhol, executive chef at the Athenaeum Hotel. Most of the proceeds from the dinner will go to Slow Food Southern Tier. Slow Food’s goal is to bring fresh, locally grown food to all people. The Slow Food Southern Tier Chapter helps food pantries in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties get fresh foods from local farms. Last year, the first Corn Moon Dinner profited Edible Grace, another organization similar to Slow Foods. However, Bares said, since Slow Food already had their not-for-profit license, it was easier to get involved with an already established

group. As of right now, the Corn Moon Dinner has no set menu because it depends on what fruits and vegetables are ripe in time for the dinner. Bares describes the meal as “Mother Nature dependent.” “We can’t really say what we are going to do because if tomatoes don’t come in this year then we can’t do any tomatoes,” Bares said. “It depends on how the summer goes. If it goes well we will plan nice dishes that highlight what came in … it really depends on what is ripening at that time.” To reserve your seat at the Corn Moon Dinner, call Bares at 716-307-1494 or Megan Taylor (Chef Taylor’s wife) at 716-307-0403.
