6 7Change & Challenge Together

I would like to welcome you to The University of Suwon!

Established in 1977, The University of Suwon (USW) endeavors to develop students’ character and contribute to the development of the nation as well as the greater prosperity of human beings. Our curriculum strives to meet the demand for Korean leaders in this competitive global society.

The USW is recognized as one of the leading Universities in Korea. Every year, our institution accepts around 3000 new students (700 of whom are in the Graduate School Programs) in the 50 academic departments, training them to become leaders in their respective fields. Our 70,000 graduates greatly contribute to the growth of the Korean society today.

The USW declared a second foundation in 2018. We constructed the NIX (Next Innovation Xroad), with a total floor area of 49,500 square meters, which will serve as a hub for a future-oriented creativity and convergence education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This building houses high-tech centers, such as DFC, Data Science-Machine Learning Center, VR-AR-MR Center, and Beauty Science Center among others. Along with it, our university has made all the preparations by using innovative curriculum to nurture creative talents who have convergence capability coupled with deep insights.

We will continue to devote all our efforts to cultivate ACE talented individuals who are Ambitious, Creative, and Executive. The USW will grow to become a university which makes our nation and human society more valuable.

The USW is committed to helping students achieve their goals. We hope that you, the future leaders of the 21st century, will build your future with us.

Thank you very much.President

Chul Soo Park

The University is located 30 km south to Seoul, which is one hour from the Gangnam district and one and a half hour from the Incheon International Airport. At The USW, you can feel the real «Dynamic Korea». Located near our University are a number of outstanding historical monuments, such as the Hwasong Palace, the royal residence of the Joseon Dynasty, and the tomb of King Jeonjo.

Meanwhile, just 13.5 km away from the University is the Samsung Digital City, which is the embodiment of Korea’s technological progress. These two facts emphasize the symbolism of The USW as an educational institution of the 21st century, in which deep traditions meet advanced technologies.

8 9Change & Challenge Together

Idea Factory 1, 2Students gather here to brainstorm and approve new ideas for startups. These meetings help develop the entrepreneur’s innovative thinking and abilities. This is the place where The USW provides an opportunity to declare its own startup support policies.

Startup LabThe laboratory provides space for those who want to start a business and get prepared for it.

Double Scan Laboratory (Data Science)It gathers results of big data search and analyzes many companies that have a business agreement with DS & ML centers. For this purpose, the DS Lab is dedicated for the Student Research Institute.

Machine Startup Laboratory (ML)This place was created for analyzing data provided by The University of Suwon and companies using high-performance workstations, as well as testing new algorithms developed in the DSL. This is a comprehensive space for machine learning and research.

Creation StudioThis studio is responsible for training the entrepreneurship support group in the production of prototype programs. It has generated a fund to actively support the activities of startup companies to create prototypes.

Content Creation Studio This is a space for the development of the “Internet of Things”, cloud services, big data services, scientific and technological services, games, and digital media. The space is designed in the form of a cell. It is equipped with a large number of individual creative spaces to support venture companies, which are created by teams of student-entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial centers. It likewise enables the conduct of active research and development, as well as industry-specific academic internship programs.

10 11Change & Challenge Together

Changes and Challenges Together 2025In response to the declining school-age population, The USW has developed a new growth strategy that will allow us to respond to the rapid social changes in the university education environment in relation with the Industrial Revolution.

In addition, in the framework of four strategic directions: “improving the competitiveness of education”, “global university”, “strengthening the industrial ecosystem”, and “innovation in the management system”, we developed three medium- and long-term development strategies for 2018, 2022, and 2025.

Until 2018, The USW focused on strengthening the educational competitiveness of our University and maintaining cooperation with regional industries. By 2022, thanks to our successful students, we plan to move from the regional to the national level. By 2025, we intend to enter the top ten prestigious private universities in the country.

During their first year after admission, the undergraduate students study at the International College where they learn Korean language and culture and take compulsory subjects. Starting from the second year, they choose their program of study and move to the respective colleges.

Prospective students must submit application documents (refer to the list below) to the Office of Admissions and attend an interview. Depending on the results of the interview, one can be awarded a scholarship in the form of a 20% to 50% discount on tuition fees for the first semester. The scholarship can be renewed for each subsequent semester depending on the candidate’s grades.

•Please note that the high school graduation certificate must be officially verified.

•As a general policy, the application fee is non-refundable. In extreme circumstances (e.g. natural disaster,

hospitalization of the applicant, etc.), a full or partial refund may be granted.

All documents must be submitted to the International College at [email protected].

18 19Change & Challenge Together

The Koreanology Program is an opportunity to learn Korean during the summer or winter holidays.

The program includes language study in the morning and language exchange in the afternoon with Korean students enrolled in the Department of English Language and Literature. Cultural and entertainment activities are also held.

During the intensive study of the Korean language and culture at The USW, students will be able to experience what “Dynamic Korea” means. Being immersed in an environment wherein the target language is used, the students develop their speaking skills, thus enabling them to communicate more effectively.

Visiting world-renowned places in Korea, the students will get to know the country and its people much better, and confirm its versatility..

Conduct of the ProgramThe intensive course on Korean language is conducted in groups and divided into two levels: primary and secondary. Groups are formed according to the results of the level test. At the primary level, grammar classes are taught in English, and speaking practice is conducted in Korean. All teachers are native speakers of Korean or speak near-native Korean.

Lectures on contemporary Korean culture include popular topics, such as music (k-pop), cinema (k-movie), national cuisine (k-food), and the Korean beauty industry (k-beauty). The program is specified depending on circumstances. All lectures are delivered in English by experienced specialists and researchers in each area.

During the afternoon lessons (practice with native Korean speakers), meetings are held with The USW students, who are studying at the Faculty of English Language. Each student is assigned a Korean student-mentor to adapt better to life in Korea.

The joint trip is held every Friday evening to get acquainted with the local culture and attractions.

Program costs include:- Transportation from and to the airport- Accommodation in the University dormitory (2 people per room)- Breakfast (sandwich and tea), lunch and dinner (student cafeteria)- Excursions and transportation
