President’s Message

November/December 2018

What an exciting time of year it is!

I have just returned from the

Commemorative Air Force (CAF)

Wings over Dallas WWII Airshow

held at the Dallas Executive Airport

10/26-28/18. The weather was a

perfect 80+ degrees and the crowd

loved it. We have the Cavanaugh

Flight Museum on our side of town,

but I’d never been to the old Red

Bird airport and it really was a

delightful experience. The airport

was closed to general aviation so the airport could

accommodate the huge WWII air show.

In addition to the ground displays which included a Sherman

tank and various artillery pieces the real stars of the show

definitely were the airplanes. I was amazed at the size of the

B-29 Superfortress and the noise of the B-17 Flying Fortress

and B-24 Liberator. As you may recall, both of my parents

were WWII Army veterans and in particular Dad was

assigned a California coastal artillery position where he had

to identify airplanes by their unique engine noise. Even

though it was plenty sunny I enjoyed closing my eyes to see if

I could distinguish the P-51 Mustang from the B-25 Mitchell

from the C-47 transport.

The air show ended with a paratrooper jump from near

perfect conditions. Far different from the situation at

Normandy June 5th & 6th 1944 where 13,000

paratroopers dropped. If you ever get a chance to see

one of the CAF air shows I can’t recommend it highly

enough. CAF is a Dallas based organization that has a

fleet of 170 vintage military aircraft and their air shows

are spectacular!

Thank you for re-electing me for another year. We

have lots of fun events planned including short term

and longer term, but as always, we encourage your

insight and feedback. Later this month we’ll have a first

ever holiday party at the Star in Frisco and you should

watch your email for registration information. We need

volunteers!

Many of you may have noticed that our membership

appreciation picnic destination, Sandy Lake Park has

been sold and closed. We welcome suggestions for

the 2019 event, thanks!

Very sincerely,

Craig Halverson President, North Texas Section

November/December 2018

On Saturday, October 27th, 14 cars from the North Texas Section drove to Winnsboro to

once again attend the Winnsboro, Texas Autumn Trails Parade. The sun was out, the

temperature was 80 degrees and seeing the kids along the parade route was great fun. A

lot of candy was thrown as the group followed the Model A Ford club. This is a huge East

Texas celebration and it was the 58thyear for the event, which has become a fun outing

for our section. After the parade, the group met at the Country Boys BBQ for lunch and

two raffles. One raffle was for MB merchandise and a 50/50 raffle that is to benefit our two

charities, The Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and The Samaritan Inn. It was a great day to be with friends and a

great day for driving our cars.

October Membership Lunch - Bavarian Grill Saturday, October 20, 2018 - Plano, TX

On Saturday, October 20th, the North Texas Section Membership Lunch was held at the

Bavarian Grill in Plano, Texas. The Bavarian Grill for several years has been a location for

our October lunch meeting to celebrate Oktoberfest, the German atmosphere and food fits

nicely with the October celebration and our German car Interest. 25 of our members

attended the lunch and shared a great menu of German food and beer. Craig Halverson

opened the meeting with a greeting and called upon our National President Gene Jurick to

share his insights for our club from his recent trip to Germany where he participated with the Presidents of MB clubs from

countries from around the world. They heard information from MB regarding future products and the direction of the

automobile industry. Brett Jurick our South Central Regional Director shared with us the activities within the South

Central Region. Ron Seifert and Gayle Brewer shared information on upcoming events for our club.

MBCA NTX Member Appreciation Picnic

Sandy Lake Park

Saturday, September 17, 2018

Our annual Member Appreciation Picnic was held at Sandy Lake Park with a weather forecast of rain and cloudy weather. A real concern was the rain and the venue with the cars parking on the grass area around the lake. As the morning progressed the sunshine appeared and the day was a beautiful Texas day with a great turnout of 90 of our Section Members.

The cars, as usual, were beautiful with 23 vintage as well as late model Mercedes cars entered in the clean car contest and picking favorites was a challenge. After the voting was in by the members attending the picnic the following were the winners

1st Place was Jeff Welden

2nd

Place was Bill Kimbill 3

rd Place was Jerry Chenault

The Matthew Ball Band provided live music for the party and Eve Lawson was the winner of the 50/50 charity drawing. The 50/50 raffle money is donated to the charities that our Section supports in our community.

The Samaritan Inn and The Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.

Gene Jurick provided certification for Preservation Class cars that were unable to attend the certification last year.

It was a great day with a great Texas BBQ lunch and the opportunity for friends to spend time visiting and looking at cars.
