Chalmette man booked with aggravated battery

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office to hold drug take-back day

A Chalmette man was booked April 6 with aggravated battery after an altercation with his girl-friend, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance in the 1900 block of Seelos Court in Chalmette.

Sheriff Pohlmann said a fe-male who lives at the residence said she and her boyfriend, Lee

White, 29, had been arguing throughout the night about her desire to end their relationship.

During the course of the ar-gument, the woman said White pushed her against a wall, mak-ing her fall onto a bed. She said he then grabbed her by her ankles, pulling her off the bed, causing her to strike her back and head on the floor. The wom-an said White also tried to choke her, sat on her in an attempt to

hold her down and stabbed her twice in the left hand causing two small lacerations.

White was transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison to be booked accordingly. He is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

White was out on bond in a related incident that took place in January, 2017 with the same woman in which he was booked with domestic abuse battery and theft of goods.

St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann encourages residents to properly dispose of unwanted or expired prescrip-tion and over-the-counter medi-

cations on Saturday, April 29 as the Sheriff’s Office participates in the annual National Prescrip-tion Drug Take-Back.

Narcotics officers with the St.

Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office will accept unwanted medica-tions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the department’s substation, 7001 W. Judge Perez Drive in

Arabi, near the corner of Aycock Street.

“Residents should take this opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and get rid of unused drugs so they don’t fall into the hands of young-sters who might misuse them or thieves who could sell them on our streets,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.

The initiative, part of a na-tional effort spearheaded by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Admin-istration, has seen more than 4.8 million pounds of prescrip-tion drugs collected since its in-ception in 2010.

St. Bernard residents who are unable to attend the lo-cal take-back event can con-tact the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-DOPE or 3673 at any time to speak with a deputy about surrendering unwanted medica-tions, Sheriff Pohlmann said. A narcotics officer will return the call and make arrangements to collect and destroy the drugs.

Cabrini’s Hanna Kennair Signs with Millsaps

Cabrini High School invited to STEM field trip

Cabrini High School Senior Hanna Kennair has signed with the Millsaps University to play volleyball for that school.

At Cabrini High, Hanna played the position of Libero for the Crescent Volleyball team while amassing numerous honors. As a senior, Hanna is a 2016 Aca-demic All-State Volleyball Play-er. She was a 2016 All-District Player as a senior and a 2015 All-District Player as a junior.

Joining her at her signing in Alumnae Hall were her parents, Bruce and Tammy Kennair, her sisters Brenna’13 and Hay-ley’15, grandparents Leroy & Marilyn Kennair, her aunt and godmother Michelle Kennair with her son and Hanna’s cous-in Carson Kennair. Also on hand were Cabrini Head Volleyball

Team Coach Kasey Laird’08, Kirk Maronge, Cabrini Athlet-ic Director, Cabrini Principal Yvonne L. Hrapmann’76, and Cabrini President Jack Truxil-lo, along with numerous family members, teammates, class-mates and friends.

Cabrini High School is a pri-vate, accredited, college prepa-ratory Catholic school for young women grades 8-12. Selective admission, an award-winning science program, and champi-onship-caliber athletics produce the complete woman prepared for college and life. The inti-mate atmosphere provides an environment of one-on-one in-struction and personal attention. Cabrini is located at 1400 Moss Street in historic Faubourg St. John on scenic Bayou St. John.

Twenty-eight students from Cabrini High School in AP and hon-ors level sciences classes were invited to attend a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based field trip at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory, or LIGO, facility in Livingston, Louisiana. In September of 2015, LIGO was credit-ed with the discovery of gravitational waves. This major scientific breakthrough is consistent with the predictions that Albert Einstein made in his 1915 theory of general relativity. The gravity waves are “ripples” in the fabric of space-time that provide evidence of cat-aclysmic events in the galaxy (like the collision of two black holes) more than 1.3 billion years ago. The students and two science de-partment members were able to experience hands-on, interactive experiments and demos that explain how waves interact. As part of the facility tour, students were able to go into the laser control room and ask the scientists and engineers about the inner work-ings of the LIGO lab.

Tammy and Bruce Kennair were on hand for their daughter Hanna’s (center) signing with Millsaps. The family resides in Belle Chasse, LA.

Students got the chance to interact with some of the exhibits.

Students engaged in demonstrations at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational facility.

Twenty-eight AP and Honors students attended the demonstrations at LIGO.

Something fishy going on at St. Bernard Hospital

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas would be proud. Come see a magnificent painting on a piece of copper in the hospital lobby. The painting is on loan from Dr. Bryan Bertucci. It is framed with copper pipes, rumored to be from Katrina Houses - missing any? Flying fish fashioned from license plates add to the uniqueness of this piece of art.

• To stay healthy all we need is a little “vitamin sea.”• Need to improve your life, “just add water.”• When you need a little quiet time go into “seaclusion.”• Don’t waste time, carpe diem, “seas the day.”• Don’t wait for your ship to come in ... Swim out after it.• Need some extra “z’s” - sleep in the “no wake zone.”• Seaside valentine - “i could travel the world and the ocean

blue… i’ll never be home until i’m with you.”• Girlfriend - you’re the only fish in the sea for me.• May all your “blues” be the sky and the sea - (or jazz).• Get your “tail” to the beach - be “shore” of yourself - don’t

get “tide” down.• Make waves - avoid “pier” pressure - always “sea” life’s

beauty.• Come out of your shell - don’t be shellfish - no shell phones.• A fisherman lives here with the catch of his life. He thought

about “mounting’’ her, but she keeps getting “bigger” every year.

[L-R]: Cabrini High scholarship recipients were May Yuratich, Calley Chauvin, Sophie Brodtmann, and Sarah D’Antoni.

Students honored at academic reception

Two incoming Cabrini High School students, one current stu-dent, and one previously awarded scholarship student were recog-nized at the annual Academic Scholars Reception in the school’s historic Esplanade building.

Incoming pre-freshmen recipients of Cabrini Academic Scholar-ships for the 2017-18 school year include Sophie Brodtmann from Metairie who attends Atonement Lutheran School and May Yura-tich of Slidell who attends First Baptist Christian School in Slidell. They were joined by Calley Chauvin of Luling a current Cabri-ni pre-freshman who is the recipient of a newly awarded schol-arship for the 2017-18 school year. Calley entered Cabrini from Immaculate Conception School. In addition to these three, Cabrini pre-freshman Sarah D’Antoni of St. Bernard was recognized for her 2016 award.

Students and their parents were welcomed by Principal Yvonne L. Hrapmann and a presentation by junior Sofia Mangerchine on “What Cabrini Means to Me!.”

Following the presentation of new scholarships, Cabrini Presi-dent Jack Truxillo addressed the gathering.

Academic Scholarships are based exclusively on academic ex-cellence and merit. The Academic Scholarship criteria are: Stu-dents must be present at Cabrini for placement test on Application Day; Students must earn a 90th percentile composite score on Cabrini’s placement test; Students must have an elementary/mid-dle school record of A/B work, acceptable conduct, and a record of regular attendance.

Cabrini High School is a private, accredited, college preparatory Catholic school for young women grades 8-12. Selective admis-sion, an award-winning science program, and championship-cal-iber athletics produce the complete woman prepared for college and life. The intimate atmosphere provides an environment of one-on-one instruction and personal attention. Cabrini is located at 1400 Moss Street in historic Faubourg St. John on scenic Bayou St. John.

Volunteers needed at Parish Zones/Parks Kiwanis Key Club Easter egg hunt preparation

St. Bernard Transit Surpasses8,000 Passenger Mark in March

Chalmette High School Basketball Team recognized for their achievements

St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department is divided into four zones, Carolyn Park, Versailles, Borgnemouth and Kenilworth. Representa-tives from the Zones attended a Council Meeting to give an update to the Council. They thanked President McInnis and the Council for their support and requested the Council to spread the word throughout their districts about the need for volunteers.

For more information on the Zones or to volunteer contact the Rec-reation Department at (504) 278-4295.

The Chalmette High School Key Club recently held an interclub with Joe Davies K Kids. Together they filled over 500 plastic eggs with candy for their Annual Easter Egg Hunt scheduled for Friday, April 14, 2017 at Chalmette High School for 11:00 a.m.

St. Bernard Transit reached a milestone having transported 8,320 passengers in the month of March. The number is the highest monthly ridership in at least three years. St. Bernard Transit Man-ager Michael Bayham attributed the rise in passengers to the new route shift that went into effect on March 1st, going to an hour-ly interval schedule, adding new stops along the route, and the customer service provided by the

department’s staff and bus drivers. “We’ve had more people ride the bus in every month in 2017 and we were hoping to break the 8,000 passenger mark at some point in late March,” said Bayham.

“The increase in ridership also reflects the smooth transition with the route and schedule changes. We were a bit concerned about a possible drop off in the first month when the new times and route went into effect. Instead of a dip in ridership, we had a major jump compared to the previous month and March 2016 numbers,” said Bayham. Parish bus ridership has increased over the previous year. In 2015, St. Bernard Transit served over 78,064 passengers. In 2016, 80,597 people rode the bus, an increase of 3%.

“The parish transit system is an essential service in our community as it helps people get to their doctors’ appointments, school, gro-cery shopping, and place of employment,” said Parish President Guy McInnis. “I’d like to extend my congratulations to all of the employees in the transit department for their hard work and dedication that has resulted in this achievement.” St. Bernard Transit buses run between Poydras and Arabi starting at 6:00 a.m. through 7:51 p.m. on week-days. The regular fare is $1 and there is a reduced fare of .50 cents for seniors, Medicare Card holders, and the disabled.

The bus schedule can be found by logging on to their webpage at www.sbpg.net/transit or you can call the St. Bernard Transit office at (504) 277-1907 for bus times or additional information.
