The Challenge
U Technology was challenged to provide a more energy efficient and lower operating cost lighting technology without compromising the store’s exacting standards.
The project focused on installing LED lights for Holt Renfrew’s Designer Department and Atrium that shine down on the jewellery and designer clothing sections within the downtown Calgary location. The objective of the project was multifaceted and U Technology had to match the correct beam angle, track connection, correlated colour temperature (CCT), paint color on the outside of the lights, and exceed the current fixture reliability.
The Solution
U Technology worked very closely with Holt Renfrew to meet the specifications for the new LED lights. There was ongoing consultation and communication to ensure the lighting of the displays would be seamless for the customers. In addition to delivering a quality product, the project was executed in less than six weeks from the time of order.
The Results
Holt Renfrew realized significant cost savings from the change in lighting. With 60 new LED lights, the store cut their light fixture wattage by half. Combined with reduced maintenance costs – which typically include both bulb replacements and lift costs – Holt Renfrew saw a significant benefit by changing just this one section of the store.
Energy Savings
Holt Renfrew will see a payback in their investment within two years and will save over 12.5 kWh in annual energy usage with just the 60 new LED bulbs installed.

In the summer of 2014, the Holt Renfrew Calgary store was looking for a lighting product that could replace some of our existing Metal Halide lamps. We needed to replace a large quantity of lamps that were in a very hard to reach ceiling location and required special equipment in order to replace. Ultimately, we were looking for a product that would have an extended lifespan and also blend in seamlessly to the rest of our existing store lighting.
We met with Kam from U Technology, and he showed us a few LED options that he felt would work well for us. We chose an LED lamp and fixture that perfectly matched our lighting colour and a fixture style that worked well with the rest of our store design scheme. Kam and U Technology were great to deal with and had the options and solutions we needed for our store lighting.
