Welcome to the Summer 2012 edition of The SAFF. What an eventful year we have had, some wonderful events throughout the estate to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. It was great to see local people enjoying getting together for party’s on their roads and within local community centres keeping the local community spirit at a high. We went along to the Linwood Centre celebrations see pg 16. We also went to see local residents proudly parading the Olympic torch throughout the town of Leicester and are very proud to see young people from the local area representing us there. Check out pg 4 to read about Sally. If you went to see any of these events we would love to have your feedback and photographs just send them to the contact on this page. It has not all been celebration unfortunately, as this year has bought a shortfall in funding for many local organisations and businesses. We at Saffron Arts in particular have found it very diffi cult to raise much needed funds this year, therefore we have had to make cuts. The SAFF Mag will now be a quarterly distribution rather than a Bi-Monthly one. We still need your support with stories, photographs and any support you can give your local charity. We run many projects on the Saffron Estate, which could be at risk if we can’t get the support and funding we need, including the much-loved Saffron Summer Fete, which is featured on pg 10. Any fundraising ideas or voluntary support you can give your charity would be very much appreciated. I would like to say thank you to Nicola Driver a local resident who set up a local shop business in the area but has sadly had to close recently. She has donated £50 from raffl es in her shop to our Charity. It is sad to see local businesses like this closing so please give your support to our local businesses and buy products in the area, we need to keep Saffron great.

The SAFF meets Sally PrestonOlympic Tourchbearer Sally Preston aged 16 from Aylestone Road who has just

finished her GCSEs at Sir Jonathon North CC and has been selected as a torchbearer in the run up to the Olympics 2012.

how did you get selected to become a Olympic torchbearer? My mum nominated me through the Coca Cola program. We were both asked to write a passage about myself and what I do, then I had to get other people I know to nominate me, I used facebook to do this.

The nominations then went to the judging panal and I was picked by Ricky Wilson the lead singer of music band Kaiser Chiefs which was nice.

What is involved in being a torchbearer?I will be passed the torch on Gallowtree Gate on Monday 2nd July. It is like a relay and I will run or jog 450 yards to the Clock Tower where I will pass it on to the next torchbearer. We will be given a white and gold tracksuit to wear which we will be able to keep along with the torch we carry.

I am a little nervous, I don’t want to drop it ha! But I am looking forward to it and it will be nice to see my family and friends supporting from the crowd.

What other interests do you have?I throw the Discus and occasionally shot and javeline. I have been ranked in the top 10 in the country for Discus and I‘ve been training for 18 month and hoping to represent the UK in the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro next time round.

I have 2 friends Edan and Laura who took part in the Olympic trials in June in Birmingham. Edan my training partner won Shot Put and Discus in the UK championships and Laura won the Triplejump so they’re both in line for a place in this years Olympics. I also enjoy playing the guitar and I play football for Oadby and Wigston.

I want to go to college and become an Oceanographer. I do a lot of Scuba Diving and will be going to Beacham College to do Geology, Biology, Chemistry and also P.E. I’ll then go onto another college or university to study Oceanography.

The saFF asks sally’s Dad what he thinks of her achievementsWe are very proud of Sally she competes a lot, it’s great to see your children with ambition. She started playing football at 5 and used to play for Leicester then she started athletics 2 years ago so she’s never been one to stay at home.

I think sport makes you more competitive and gives you that drive you need in life it also helps you socially, your getting to meet new people all the time and not sat at home on the computer it’s good to see young people doing something constructive as life is competitive.

Illegal drugs are placed into 3 categories - Class A, B or C - based on their harmfulness to the user or to society. The class affects the maximum penalty for an offence involving the drug – e.g. Class A drugs have the most severe penalty. Drugs controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act are illegal to have, produce, give away or sell.

• Class A: heroin (diamorphine), cocaine (including crack), methadone, ecstasy (MDMA), LSD, and magic mushrooms. • Class B: amphetamines, barbiturates, codeine, cannabis, cathinones (including mephedrone) and synthetic cannabinoids. • Class C: benzodiazepines (tranquilisers), GHB, ketamine, anabolic steroids, GBL and benzylpiperazines (BZP).

Not all drugs are illegal, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t harmful. Tobacco and alcohol can seriously damage your health. Recently new ‘legal highs’ have been developed to mimic effects of illegal drugs like cocaine and ecstasy but are different enough to avoid being classified as illegal. They still have dangerous side effects.WhaT Will The POliCe DO iF i’M CaughT WiTh CannaBis anD Will i geT a CriMinal reCOrD?If you’re caught with even a small amount of cannabis, it will be confiscate and you can be arrested. It will depend on the circumstances. Usually, you’ll get a warning if you’re 18 and over. If you’re under 18, you’ll get a reprimand and your parent or guardian will be contacted. The police are more likely to arrest if you are smoking in public or have been caught with cannabis before. If you’re under 18, the 2nd time you get caught you’ll get a final warning and be referred to a Youth Offending Team. If you’re 18 and over, the 2nd time you get caught you’ll get a Penalty Notice of Disorder, which is an on-the-spot fine of £80. Regardless of how old you are, if you’re caught with cannabis for a 3rd time you can be arrested. The maximum penalty for possession of cannabis is five years in prison plus an unlimited fine. Dealing is a serious offence. This includes giving drugs to friends. People who grow cannabis in their homes or carry larger amounts on them also risk being charged with intent to supply. The maximum penalty for supply is 14 years in prison plus an unlimited fine.

WhaT are legal highs? Substances, that produce similar effects, to drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, but not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act. They are illegal to sell, supply or advertise for “human consumption”. To get round this, sellers will refer to them as research chemicals, plant food, bath crystals or pond cleaner. There are a large number of legal highs, Just because a drug is legal to possess, it doesn’t mean it’s safe.

• ‘Legal highs’ are harmful and can have similar health risks to drugs like cocaine, ecstasy and speed.• Risks of ‘legal highs’ include reduced inhibitions, drowsiness, excited or paranoid states, coma, seizures, and death.• These risks are increased if used with alcohol or other drugs.• Drugs sold as ‘legal high’ may contain substances that are illegal which will hold a penalty.

If you have any drug related issues and do not wish to speak to Police then you can call the number below or visit the talk to frank website.

Community newsTHE saFFrOn esTaTe GETS A

The spring clean was completed on Monday 11th June 2012. The project was a MASSIVE success and it was a brilliant day, despite the continuous down pour of rain. Agencies across the City Council participated in the clean-up event and pulled together to remove almost 25 tonnes of waste from our homes and streets.Agencies that were involved in the event ranged from Biffa Waste Management, Grounds Maintenance, Parks Services, Graffiti Team (they removed sprayed on house numbers), which was replaced by our carpenters with new house number plate signs, Community Payback Team, Leicester into Work, Cleansing Services, all housing staff from Saffron Lane (myself, Paul Lewis, Daksha Tailor and Hiten Diyar), City Wardens, Environmental Health, Ward Councillors, Works Planner (Sophie Warren) and most of all, our wonderful community volunteers who came out with us to work on the day.

To follow on, all flats in the Neston Gardens & Neston Road area have had a thorough spring clean with a painting project on Heathcott Road to follow. All flats in Heathcott Road will have a refreshed re-vamp in their area with blocks cleaned and communal gardens improved. We have some great ideas for continuous improvements in Neston and I’ll make sure that you are updated with future projects. Saffron Arts Forum News

Fund Raising

Saffron Arts Forum is your local charity. We are extremely passionate about the estate and strive to bring free access to education, training and local events. Working for the charity has made us more aware of the issues that occur here and the barriers people face day to day. We want to continue working with the community and make sure that local residents of all ages have the opportunity to learn new skills and get involved in what happens locally.

Community ArtsSaffron Arts have been running many free courses for the community in Art, Design, Craft, Textiles and Photography, Creative Writing as well as computer skills and family learning activities. Local students have produced some quality work which we will be displaying and selling at the Saffron Summer Fete this year on 11th August.

Saffron FeteWe are a part of the fete committee and are responsible for helping to organise the event and procession, which is open for everyone to enjoy. It’s about getting as many people involved as possible to enjoy a community event. The fete is attended by thousands of people and we hope to have your support to keep it going especially in times as these where funding is tight and moral maybe low.

The Saff MagWe also write and produce The Saff Mag as a way of bringing positive local news to your door, to do this for free we rely on advertising to cover the cost of production so if you have a small business to advertise locally then The SAFF Mag is your prime opportunity to do so at affordable prices. The magazine reaches people who may not otherwise get involved in local activities and events.

We are your local charity and rely on funding to keep the estates projects running, however we have hit diffi cult times due to funding cuts and we are looking to our community for support to keep our projects local. If you have any ideas or see our charity boxes in the local shops please donate what you can to keep your local charity in the Saffron Estate.

Voluntary opportunitiesCan you help us with Fundraising, Volunteering at events, being a charity board member or support the production of The SAFF Mag, by becoming a local reporter, photographer and selling advertising to local businesses. If you can help then we would love to have you on board. Contact Kellie at: Saffron Arts, Unit 9, Linwood Workshops, Linwood Lane, Leicester LE2 6QJ, 07784233997-0116 224 9790 [email protected]

Chris worked together with staff and other volunteers at the Linwood Centre to put on a lovely jubilee themed lunch for 50 people. Was the event free for people to attend?Yes I applied to the local community association to help fund the event so that local people could attend for free. I made my own invites from skills I’d learnt on course I’d attended at the centre a few years ago.How do you think the event went?I was thrilled and over the moon with how it went. Everyone had a really good time and the feedback was great. We have some wonderful pictures and I made attendees a memory booklet to take home with them. We had a sing a long and people were even getting up for a little jig it was great to see all the happy faces.how long have you been a volunteer and what do you get out of it?I have been volunteering for about 5 years now. It can be stressful when you try to do too much, I have mobility issues so it can be a little diffi cult at times but I do my best and I enjoy it. It’s defi nitely built my confi dence and I’m learning a lot of new skills. I could never have stood up a year ago and spoke in front people but it’s getting easier with each event.I feel a sense of achievement when I volunteer. I’m thrilled I can actually do something worthwhile. There will come a time when I wont be able to do as much, so I’m enjoying doing it, it’s keeping me busy.

What made you want to become a volunteer?I Just wanted something to do. I used to help out the luncheon club and coffee bar making tea and coffee and it took off from there. It means a lot to me it gets me out everyday, I meet my daughter there for coffee in the mornings too. It’s my social life, I’d be sat at home on the computer being bored if I didn’t go to the Linwood Centre.I enjoy meeting people and I now help organise coffee mornings once a month as a way of getting new people into the building.I used to do courses at the Linwood Centre and that gave me the confi dence to volunteer. It opens up doors you’ve just got to take that fi rst step through and progress from there.so what’s next?I’m organising an arts and crafts coffee morning in July then I will be helping to organise the Christmas Lunch with Ros Walker who runs the local Linwood Luncheon club as a volunteer.Chris would like to thank Ros Walker, Nel Kirby Marie Cook and Sandy who all volunteered on the day to put on this fabulous event. Also thank you to Karen Pickering and Pritan Pancholi staff at the centre that helped with the organising.

The SAFF Interview Chris Festorazzi A local resident who volunteers at the Linwood Centre wanted to put on an event to bring people together in celebrating the Big Lunch and the Queens Diamond Jubilee.

Clare Walker has a wealth of experience in the domestic abuse fi eld and is an experienced Licensed Freedom Programme trainer. Clare set up the fi rst Freedom Programme victims support group in Leicester in 2004. And has delivered professionals training and workshops across the UK since 2006, also teaching the Freedom Programme model and the impact of domestic abuse on the whole family unit, to students in various Universities. Clare is a great believer in the Freedom Programme and jumped at the opportunity to work in partnership with the Police to deliver their domestic abuse Tool Box training in the Saffron area. “The reason why I believe in the Freedom Programme is that I have seen it many times change and ultimately save lives.Domestic abuse crosses all classes, ages, ethnicities, religions, cultures, races or lifestyles. The Freedom Programme demystifi es domestic abuse in all its entirety. It enables victims/survivors to understand that everything is beyond their control and that their abusive partner’s behaviours and tactics are all premeditated; with their main aim to gain power and control over another. This is most common in heterosexual intimate relationships, male perpetrator and female victim, but by no means solely. The Freedom Programme model is based on human behaviours, therefore we can all identify with a lot of the tactics. The difference in an abusive relationship is that the abuser has an agenda, which is to gain power & control of another. A lot of us aren’t even aware when our relationships are abusive. Domestic abuse isn’t just physical, its social, emotional, fi nancial and sexual. The psychological impacts stay with us long after the breaks and bruises have cleared. The fi rst step toward recovery is being able to identify that we’re in an abusive relationship - the Freedom Programme educates us so we can see those relationships for what there are.”

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Domestic Abuse is a significant issue on the Saffron Estate and may affect many people in their lives. People have great difficulty in understanding, talking about and reporting domestic abuse and are often reluctant to approach the police.

So we have set up a project in the area called the DV Tool Box to assist people who maybe a victim or who may know a victim of domestic violence and would like some friendly local advice.

Where you see the DV tool box logo in a building you know there will be somebody there who can give you advice and support on Domestic Violence

If you need further advice or need to discuss any issues regarding domestic violence there are key workers in the following buildings.
