  • THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

  • BAPTISM - WHAT WILL HAPPEN

    • Those to be baptized will stand before the community.

    • You will be asked, “What do you want?” - “To be baptized.”

    • The priest will make the sign of the cross on your forehead.

    • The priest will pray for those to be baptized and their sponsors.

    • He will bless the water in the font.

    • You will be asked to recite your Baptismal promises.

    - Do you reject sin?- Profess Faith? Etc.

    • Water will be poured over your head three times –

    “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

    • You will be anointed with Chrism oil.

    • A white garment will be placed over your shoulders.

    • You will be given a candle that has been lit from the Easter candle.

    • The priest will pray a blessing on us all.

    • You will be welcomed into the community.

    – Church terminologies: “the washing,” “regeneration,” “bath of enlightenment”.

    – Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

    Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down

    like a dove from the sky and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” (John 1:32-34)

    Jesus:“In all truth I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.” (John 3:3)

    • All sins are forgiven – both original (Adam and Eve) and personal.

    • We die with our Lord and are born into the new, spiritual life in Christ.

    • Receive the gifts from God:

    - grace of justification (frees us from sin)

    - sanctifying grace (heals/changes interior of our beings)

    - enables us to believe in - hope in - love God.

    • Initiates and incorporates us into Christ’s body, the church.

    • Seals us with an indelible spiritual mark or permanent change in our souls.
