Commander‟s Report

Cdr. Carol Lamendola

It seems almost unbelievable that, by

the time you read this message, ¼ of my

year as your Commander will be in the past!

Not one of you said “no” to anything I asked

of you. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR

THAT! However, I had every confidence

that each of you would step up to the plate.

Didn‟t we have a great Oktoberfest?

Thanks so much to Barbara Nicholas for

all the work she did, even though she was

unable to attend! Also thanks to Marcia

Cassidy and Vanda Lighthouse who

always pitch in and help. The quiz on

Germany was a lot of fun. However, I only

knew about 5 or 6 questions out of 21. Rick

and Bridget Hibbs took top honors

AGAIN. Isn‟t that 2 years in a row? So

they know all about Germany and football.

Remind me never to play Trivia against

them. Everyone outdid themselves with the

food. It was scrumptious. Rita, those soft

pretzels went as well with wine as beer.

Sorry the cold and ice kept you away. We

missed you. Quite a few people enjoyed

playing Dominoes. It is addicting, isn‟t it?

It wasn‟t my day to win at Euchre either!

But it was good to see all of you at the first

social event after Change of Watch.

Thanks to all our Boat Show

workers and to Bob Roth, Chairman for

set-up and break-down of our booth.

Thanks also go to Vanda Lighthouse for

preparing and scheduling of time slots for

working. I think we have 13-14 names of

people who are interested in taking the

course! Good job, everyone.

Founders‟ Day was well attended,

especially considering the snow storm. It

was quite a hairy drive, but we didn‟t

encounter any accidents and it only added

about 15-20 minutes to our time. Only 5

people were unable to get there. Good

planning and cooperation between Iroquois

and Rochester was evident in the good time

that was had by all. Thank you Marcia for

taking reservations and collecting money in

advance and Barbara for coordinating the

online arrangements between the two

squadrons that enabled us to plan without

having to go out to meetings. Thanks also to

Iroquois‟ Pat Elsbree for the fun games and

Annette Elliott for the reservation flyers

and programs. D6 representative P/D/C

Isabel Warren was delightful and most

gracious, as always. Our guest speaker was

a former member of Rochester Power

Squadron and is quite the adventurer. Does

anyone remember Ethan Welch? He was

before my time. He gave us an overview of

his exploits. Maybe he can come to one of

our meetings and give us a more in depth

accounting of one of his trips.

If you haven‟t been able to attend one of the

previous events, you were missed. I hope

you will plan on coming to one of our

upcoming events:

Secretary’s Report February 2011

P/C Linda G. Haas, P

At the 05 January General Meeting at

Genesee Yacht Club (GYC), P/D/C Gerald

Zambroski, P talked about the importance

of SailAngle. SailAngle is destined to be

the communications platform for USPS.

The website is set up to serve only USPS

members, and will be secure. Within 2 or

3 years, everything USPS will be on

SailAngle. Jerry explained we can log

onto SailAngle on the USPS website using

our certificate number and our pin number.

If you do not know your pin number you

can phone Deliah Holloway at National (1-

919-821-0281). Using your pin number,

your name should appear. Visit

http://www.sailangle.com/member to sign-

in to your account directly; or you can

access SailAngle from your USPS.org

account by clicking the “Access

SailAngle” button on the USPS.org

homepage.

SailAngle can be used to schedule an

event, send out notice of an event, and

determine how many people plan to attend

without using E-mail addresses. A map

will be available showing the location of

the event, with directions. This is just one

example of how practical SailAngle can be

of used by USPS members.

SailAngle Messages were sent out to USPS

members on 02 February and 10 February

from the USPS Naional Group. Both

contain very important information for all

of us. If you did not receive these E-mails

from National, please let me or Rita Parks

know, and we will send them to you. The

02 February message gives the February-

March webinar schedule. A webinar is a

live, interactive presentation with audio

and video that you attend via an internet

connection on your computer. There is

detailed information about how to sign up,

and, what is covered in each webinar. Find

out more and see the webinar schedule at

http://www.sailangle.com/index/help-

webinars. It is important that each of us

become as familiar as possible with

SailAngle. It is my understanding that

SailAngle will be the only means of

communicating within USPS and there will

be no staff backup within the next couple

of years.

Tutorial videos (over 60) are available.

Each video is less than 2 minutes long and

contains step by step directions on how to

use each tool. Visit

http://www.sailangle.com/tutorialvideos to

view the videos.

Please remember two of our members have

recently had significant health problems.

Bob Leavitt was in a terrible auto accident

several weeks ago when enroute to

Pultneyville for a yacht club meeting. His

son Rick was driving, hit a slippery patch

of road, and totaled his car. Bob‟s

eyeglasses ended up in the trunk! Bob

suffered three fractures of his pelvic bones,

and damage to one hip. He is now doing

very well, and hopes to attend the March

General Meeting. Warren Ganter is home

again after having a Pacemaker implant,

and a few days later, surgery to repair a

fistula (opening between his intestine and

bladder). We pray they will continue to

mend and that they will be able to join us

again soon.

RAMBLIN’S ROUND THE RIVER

By: Lt. Kevin G. Parks, AP (Star Reporter)

Well gentle readers; it‟s been just over 10 years since I started this article and I‟ve tried to fulfill my

mission of providing you with the scuttlebutt of our harbor. And what‟s going on these days relates to many

discussions that we‟ve had over the bridge of assumptions AKA The O‟Rourke Bridge. Now those piers

were put too far into the river with cribbage way too extensive choking our river and creating at this time of

year ice damming; as predicted by Al Gilbert, owner of Voyager Boat Sales and The Harbortown Belle and

an engineer by training. Well this year as in a couple of previous years the ice damming was extensive; a lot

of those floating docks built with 6.5 million dollars of tax money naturally didn‟t weather it well. And

some of Voyager’s docks have taken some damage; I don‟t know about the Riverboat Gamblers dock yet as

I haven‟t ventured up thru the snow to investigate but I know the boys at Voyager will have everything

squared up by the time the Riverboat Gambler splashes.

Other news of Lighthouse Pointe Development is slow coming. Though plans and permits are in

place, funding is slow. I‟ve spoken of many changes on our river over this decade of Ramblin‟s Round The

River both current as well as historical. We‟ve toured many bars, seen many events, opened and closed the

seasonal bars time and time again. Our first waterfront bar/restaurant of the season; Pelican‟s Nest will

have opening day April 18th

, where this river rat will be in attendance. Hope to see you there.

Well the snow should end soon and we can get to fitting out our boats and prepare for yet

another wonderful season. Hope to see you on the river but before that on March 18-19 I will be setting up

the bar and spilling a few as I have for the past 25 years for the Spring Conference. And this year it is at the

Airport Marriott on West Ridge Road. Come on down on Friday night and have a couple of drinks and talk

boat with me.

But for now since it is still cold I think I will meander down where it is warm and quaff a cold one at

Murph’s Irondequoit Pub. So in the mean time… Raise „Em up…..

“Believe me, my young friend,” said the water rat solemely, “there is nothing…absolutely nothing…half so much worth

doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing…about in boats…or with boats. In or out of „em, it doesn‟t matter.

Nothing seems really to matter, that‟s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don‟t; whether you arrive at your

destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you‟re always busy, and you never do

anything in particular; and when you have done it there is always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you‟d

much better not. Look here! If you‟ve really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together, and

have a long day of it?” from: The Wind and The Willows
