Please join us for daily and weekend Masses in the
Church. During this time of the covid19 virus, there
are a few things you need to know before attending
Mass, Confessions and Adoration. �

��Arrive to the church about 15�20 minutes before Mass
to allow time to be seated. Do not congregate inside or
outside of the church. Remain 6 feet from non�family
members.�

��Please enter through the front doors of the church and
exit out of the closest exit at the conclusion of Mass.�
�
��All those 10 years and older who enter the church and/
or chapel must wear a mask covering mouth and nose.
Mask must be worn at all times.�

��Please use hand sanitizer after entering the church.�

��Remember social distancing. Sit 6 feet from non family
members.�

��Communion will be given in the hand only. After
receiving the Body of Christ, step to the side, lower
mask, consume and replace mask.�

��There will be no offertory during Mass. Baskets will

your envelopes or cash in the baskets. The online

�
I wonder if Jesus was thinking of the story of Elisha and
the woman of Shunem when he said, “Whoever
receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive
a prophet’s reward.”�
�
He himself makes several promises in today’s Gospel,
and he confirms the last one with the words, “Amen, I
say to you.” In the New Testament, this expression
occurs almost eighty times, always on the lips of Jesus.�
�
The Psalmist also makes a promise: “Through all
generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.”
Can we make the same claim?�
�
A Beautiful Lady came to a place called La Salette
because God’s faithfulness was, in fact, not being
proclaimed by her people. It had been largely forgotten.
She proclaimed it by her words, which included
warnings and promises, and more effectively by the
crucifix that she wore.�
�
You have heard many times that the shining crucifix
seemed to be the source of the light in which Mary
appeared and which enfolded the children as they stood
close to her. It is as if she came to “announce the
praises of him who called you out of darkness into his
wonderful light” (Gospel acclamation).�
�
The great La Salette scholar Fr. Jean Stern writes:
“Everything this Lady is, including her compassion,
goodness and power, comes from elsewhere, from her
Son, from the crucified one who is truly her Son, but
who is, first, God from true God.”�
�
Jesus is the source of light. Mary draws us to him. Like
St. Paul, she does not want us to be unaware of the
relationship we have with Christ Jesus as a result of our
baptism.�
�
Walking “in the light of his countenance,” we receive the
gift of knowledge to help interpret our age, and the gift
of understanding and wisdom, to conduct ourselves in
right action, which might be “credited” to us as
righteousness (see Romans 4:22). �
�
Or, in the words of today’s opening prayer: “O God, who
through the grace of adoption chose us to be children of
light, grant, we pray, that we may not be wrapped in the
darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the
bright light of truth.”�
�

Thank You but Not Farewell �
for This Mary Queen Legend�
�
In 1985, the Malek family moved to Friendswood. Ben,
Alice and their young children: Angie, Brian and Chris,
made the move from Houston. Shortly after getting settled
in their new home, Alice began her long and storied
relationship with Mary Queen Catholic Church. She
started volunteering with the Women’s Ministry, buying
supplies for the Christmas bazaar, and holding workshops
for the ladies of the parish, to make items for the bazaar.
In addition, Alice was instrumental in starting the
Christmas Luncheon Tea Room. She soon found herself
on the boards of the Women’s Ministry and the Diocesan
Council of Catholic Women. Alice also spent many hours
volunteering outside of the church as well. She was a
trailblazer in the sustainability movement as she started
the first ever recycling program at Westwood Elementary
School.�
�
In 1991, after six years of volunteering, Alice was offered a
paid position at Mary Queen which she gladly accepted.
She became the Administrative Assistant in the
Elementary Faith Formation Office. Alice has worked
tirelessly with parents, children, teachers and aides over
29 years, from getting classrooms ready to getting children
and their parents ready for their next steps in their
Elementary Faith Formation. In any given year, Alice has
registered and handled over 600 students! She has also
lent a hand to assist the Edge, Life Teen and Adult Faith
Formation programs when needed. As if that’s not
enough, Alice continues to single handedly organize and
run the annual Women’s Ministry Bazaar, organize various
receptions, and make countless runs to Sams on a weekly
basis. She has worked for many Elementary Faith
Formation Directors and priests during her years here. �
�
Now that Alice is retiring, she still plans to stay active as a
volunteer here at Mary Queen. She also hopes to visit her
children and grandchildren more often in San Diego,
Denver and Austin. In addition, Alice plans to continue
working around her home and in her yard. Whatever the
future holds for Alice, we wish her the best and thank her
for her many years of tireless service to Mary Queen.

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time�
When we were baptized, we were baptized into Christ’s
death. Take a moment to ponder these profound words.
We were baptized into death. In every sense of the word,
we are asked to die. This is not just about our final death
but about daily deaths due to inconvenience, discomfort,
pain, loss, or others’ needs. This is an incredible epiphany
given the way we very often approach our lives. We do
everything to avoid death, let alone encounter it! Many
avoid pain, discomfort, inconvenience, uneasiness,
change, interference, and suffering of any kind. We put a
lot of energy into finding the easiest and least
inconvenient way through many things. Even holding the
door open for a stranger or saying hello to someone in the
store can be major undertakings.�
�
We are called to die. One of the biggest wake�up calls we
can have is realizing that life is not about us! There are
millions of other people sharing life on this planet with
whom I have a relationship. Does my life celebrate those
relationships? The most distracting question we can ask
is, “What do I want to do?” The more focused, faith�filled
question is, “What do I need to do?” What I need to do
may not be what I want to do. However, asking this
question more frequently will teach us how to more
purposefully and intentionally live so we can be a life
giving vessel for others. When we learn to live more
sacrificially, to put the needs of others before our own,
and to not always seek our own self�interest, we become
aware of what baptism into Christ’s death is really all
about. These are the roots of virtue and the seedbed for
justice, tolerance, solidarity, love, and peace.�

Learning how to accept all the “small deaths” and
sacrifices life calls us to teaches us how to approach our
final death. All deaths ask us to empty ourselves into
something or someone else. Whether we empty ourselves
into the heart and soul of another human being or empty
ourselves into God at the moment of our final death, new
life is always received and nurtured. A heart that
exclusively seeks its own interest is a heart that is closed
to love. A heart that pours itself out to others and is
content with being emptied is a heart that has been
touched by and open to mercy. It is a heart that overflows

The Gabriel Project�
A Christian Ministry of loving service to women
experiencing a crisis pregnancy. We provide practical
advice, assistance, as well as spiritual support.�

New volunteers are always needed and welcome. If you

The Food Pantry at Mary Queen is still open our
regular hours (Monday � Friday, 10:00 AM � 2:00 PM)
and regular boundaries (Zip Codes 77546, 77581,
77511).�The only reason we would close would be if we
are told to by the Archdiocese or if we run out of
groceries.� Normally, we order groceries from the
Galveston County Food Bank and from Kroger.�The Food
Bank still has plenty of groceries but the selection is
limited.�Kroger has told us that we cannot place an order
anytime soon.� So, we are asking individuals to donate
groceries. Donations can be dropped off Monday �
Friday, from 10:00 AM � 2:00 PM at the back of the Food
Pantry.�

We also gladly accept monetary donations. Eventually
we will be able to order groceries again and we are still

each year with a special recognition known as the Annual
Parish Service Award. �

Safe Environment: CMGConnect Safe Haven
The Archdiocese of Galveston�Houston has a new Safe
Environment Program, CMGConnect Safe Haven. This is
an online Safe Environment training which replaces the
previous program, VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children.
The CMGConnect Safe Haven training consists of three
vignette style training videos and the duration of the
training is approximately 60 minutes. They are available
in English and Spanish. As part of the renewal training
you will complete another criminal background check that
will be included at the end of the training. Live trainings
will no longer be offered, all Safe Environment trainings
will now be online.�

Church Keepers Needed�
This is a group of volunteers who help keep our beautiful
church clean and presentable. It is “light” house (church)
keeping like dusting and cleaning surfaces of the

We all know these words by heart. They are from the
United States Declaration of Independence. However,
are these words held with the same reverence around

Consumer Alert: Scammers Impersonating
Pastors to Solicit Gift Cards�
Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a consumer alert
regarding persons alleging to be priests or pastors,
texting members of the church and asking them to buy
gift cards for a false charitable cause.�
�
Texans have received deceptive texts from people
pretending to be pastors, then requesting that they
purchase a gift card and send them the information to
access that card. The scammers claim these cards are
needed for some charitable reason, but insist they cannot
pick up a gift card themselves and the purchaser will be
reimbursed.�
�
All Texans should be aware of unsolicited calls and texts
from scammers impersonating leaders of the church. We
believe that the scammers are using information found on
churches’ websites or bulletins. Churches throughout
Texas have seen reports of this scam. �
�
Report suspected fraud to the attorney general’s
Consumer Protection Division by calling to free 1�800�
621�0508 or by filing an online complaint at https://
www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/consumer�protection/
file�consumer�complaint.�
God Is Love�
I was recently at a Catholic conference and had a
conversation with someone living in the thick of
Hollywood culture. He was Catholic and spoke of how
hard it was to live out his faith amid tremendous
temptation and negativity toward religion. He spoke
about how going to daily Mass helped to keep him
centered and stay strong in his faith. He was a great
witness to living out one’s faith in the face of disbelief.�
�
One thing that he told me stood out above all the rest. He
spoke of his engagement to his fiancé and how important
it was to him that God was a major part of their
relationship and their lives as individuals as well. He told
me he said something to her like, “If you don’t love Jesus
more than you love me, this is never going to work.”
What an amazing and truly moving witness!�
�
Songs and books are written about the intense longing
one human being can have for another. We can describe
another as meaning everything to us. We speak of
wanting to offer our complete selves to our beloved.
However, true love is about more than wanting to be with
that person. It is about wanting that person to know a
love even greater than theirs: the love of God. No love
can last without God. My Hollywood friend knew this to
be the case. He showed his true love for his wife�to�be by
sharing more than himself � he shared the very One
who created love.�
