Well we just returned from a wonderful
week at the 1000 Islands. The Antique Boat show
was awesome. If you haven’t been to Clayton, NY
to the Antique Boat Museum you are really missing
out on seeing some of the most gorgeous antique
boats. Our motel overlooked the St. Lawrence
River and we enjoyed our mornings and evenings
just sitting on the Adirondack chairs and gazing at
the River. One of my very favorite summer
vacation spots.
We were unable to attend the RPS
Rendezvous but heard there was an excellent
turnout. Even had some Florida residents in
attendance, wish we could have made it.
Our General meetings will resume in
September. September 5th
is our meeting at GYC.
Plan to attend and catch up on the upcoming
fall/winter activities.
Enjoy the rest of this wonderful summer!
BOATING IS FUN…

RAMBLIN’S ROUND THE RIVER
By: Lt. Kevin G. Parks, AP (Star Reporter)
Well Gentle Readers; here we are deep in late summer with the Labor Day Weekend upon us; things
are hopping on the river after such a great season. The waterfront bars are starting to slow down; O’lies has
stopped lunches for the season and Schooner’s Riverside Pub will be closing for the season Sunday 9
September. It seems as though they just opened. Pelican’s Nest is still having lunches as well as dinners and
of course will be having their famous Halloween Party. The view of the river from these places has always
been dominated by the Hojack Swing Bridge. Well they have finally put up the scaffolding to begin the
asbestos removal and demolition of the engine house and soon will be dismantling the iron. By spring the
coffer dam should be installed and the massive footer removed; if they maintain schedule and of course
weather permitting.
Now there is a new bar/restaurant in the old Driftwood on River Street. They call it Steel River,
making references to the railroad and of course our river. The place is friendly and quite remodeled and far
removed from the old worn Driftwood, a welcome addition to our river.
The dredging of the river is proceeding slowly as a new company; run mostly by local guys is
plotting along. Their equipment is a little lighter than that used in the past but they seem to be working pretty
regular and getting the job done.
Soon the Harbortown Belle will be conducting fall river cruises up our gorgeous gorge.
Well as wonderful as this season is and as endless as it seems, it is hard to believe that Football
season starts in another week. Now I have heard that Murph’s Irondequoit Pub will now be open on
Sundays for the Football Season as he has the “Sports Package”. So for those rainy Sunday’s this will be a
good place to take shelter. In fact I think I will meander down there for a nice cool pint right now. So until
the next time…....Raise ‘em Up!
“Believe me, my young friend,” said the water rat solemely, “there is nothing…absolutely nothing…half so much worth
doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing…about in boats…or with boats. In or out of ‘em, it doesn’t matter.
Nothing seems really to matter, that’s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don’t; whether you arrive at your
destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you’re always busy, and you never do
anything in particular; and when you have done it there is always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you’d
much better not. Look here! If you’ve really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together, and
have a long day of it?” from: The Wind and The Willows
A Little Bit of Trivia…………….
Before the mast
Literally, the position of the crew whose living quarters on board were in the forecastle (the section of a ship forward of the foremast). The term is also used more generally to describe seamen as compared with officers,
in phrases such as "he sailed before the mast."
