It was always going to be tough when the two clubs decided to merge in this age group but the boys should be proud of the way they pulled together and chased down a difficult target set by a very capable Kincumber side.

After losing the toss, they asked to field first. The boys were a bit tentative and kincumber were 2-70 after 16 overs. The next 10 overs saw some great cricket from the boys, after 25 overs the opposition were 7-102.

Just as they thought they had the game in the bag kincumber fought back to finish 197 all out in the 50th over. The wickets were shared about with 2 wickets each for Jackson Hughes, Byron Buckley and Ryan bender. 1 wicket each for Lachlan Mackay, Josh Moffit, Jakob madden and Luke Jacobs. A good team effort.

The Lisarow narara innings started slowly

but by the 6th over the run rate lifted as Luke Abra-Colnan and Byron Buckley got us to 1-66 in the 15th over. The fall of our 2nd wicket in the 16th over brought Jackson Hughes to the crease and he combined with Luke Abra-Colnan to put on a 3rd wicket partnership of 116 until luke was forced to retire on 100*. His innings was superb with 19 fours, most being plundered through on and off drives as he displayed great patience and nerve to reach his maiden century.

The fall of our 3rd wicket in the 43rd over was too little too late for the opposition as Jack Hughes finished on 41 and we reached our target with 5 overs to spare.

Great result for newly merged side and I trust its a sign of things to come.

How exciting it is to read all the match reports for the first weeks of play - it sounds like fun. Thankyou to all the captains & coaches for your reports - Please keep them rolling in, your contributions make our newsletter a ‘must read’, and helps the rest of us develop an understanding of how the game was played - beyond what a mere score summary can provide. Keep up the good work.

Thankyou to all the other contributors too. In this issue we have the launch of our senior ‘Fantasy League’ from Garry Crowe, a great little piece about our ‘Milo cricketers’ from Rob Blandford, and of course our fun ‘60 seconds with...’ interviews.

I am also loving seeing the Player of the Round winners, well done! For Seniors - don’t forget to head down to The Grange after matches to be in the running for the members draw and a BBQ with mates. We plan to have even more variety in upcoming issues, but if you have a short story, a funny anecdote, a photo with caption, or an idea to share, please contact me ( [email protected] ) so that we can have a look at it for The Roar!!“The minute you hesitate you are in trouble.” Steve Waugh

So you think you can do a better job than the selectors? Join in the fun and enter the NWCC Fantasy League. This is a new season and you have a chance to prove the selectors wrong and challenge your teammates to do better.

Last year was our first venture into Fantasy League which was won by Tamara Randall who pocketed the pool of $105. This year I am sure Tamara will do her best to retain the title and you have the chance to take it off her. The more people who enter the bigger the prize pool. The offer is open to everyone not just players. For the small cost of just 5 dollars you can join in the fun. Soon you will get an email with instructions how to select your team and the team selection closing date. During the season there will be two opportunities to change your team to allow for injuries or loss of form. Also there will be two rounds where the selector of the team which gets the most Fantasy points for that round gets a prize. This means even though you may not be in the running for the overall prize, you can still win one of the two round prizes. Fantasy League progress will be reported in the Roar newsletter so watch this space..

Welcome players and families to the 2014 - 2015 season with the mighty Narara Wyoming Lions MILO cricket. The “Magnificent Yellow and Green Lions”!There are already 24 registrations across 4 age groups, including new and past players, boys and girls this year and there’s still time for that number to grow further. Week 1 started out a bit like Christmas day with bats, bags, balls, hats, shirts, drink bottles, stickers, and of course ‘Milo’ being handed out and new friends to be made. With the introductions complete, the “real cricket” and fun began with some catching, batting and bowling before the green team had a mini game. It was great to see the smiling and hear the laughter of these budding cricket stars of the future as they played with their new gear and in forging new friendships and stories of cricketing glory. Each week the focus is to have fun whilst learning the skills of how to play good fair-play cricket. We apply all disciplines of the sport, whilst building motor and social skills, get lots of healthy outdoor exercise, and we mix it up by getting the mums, dads, nanas and pops all involved. We also try to end each session with a mini game where the players can practice their skills in a modified game

environment. It’s great fun to watch scorching shots being made mixed in with blistering catches, and spectacular wickets being taken. Nothing like seeing a dad or mum getting caught or bowled by their child now is there! ☺And it’s not too late to join in if you have a friend or budding player interested, just let us know and they’ll be more than welcome. So GO the “mighty” Green and Yellow Milo Lions for season 2014-2015.

What is the strangest thing you have ever seen on a cricket field? My captain Craig (Scary) Coskerie having to relieve me of bowling duties at Little Paddy one day because the opposition said I was too fast in the fading light !!

Who is the funniest team-mate you have played with? Can’t name just one, but Andrew (Geggsy) McGregor is one, Jason (Aussie Joe) Fisher is another. Brian Ward will be the best this season, though Israel Coggan will be trying (....!!)

What is your most enjoyable moment playing cricket so far?Years ago, I took a sharp catch to assist another bloke with the final wicket of his hat trick. I can still see all the ripped-off blades of grass between my fingers, and the smile on his face.

Who was your first NWCC captain? Not certain, but Mozza (John Moriarty snr) was probably the poor unfortunate....

What do you think is your personal cricketing highlight so far?I’ve had some fun with the ball at times, but two highlights for me are a couple of last wicket partnerships that helped win the game – one with Stuey Barclay at Big Paddy, another one with Charlie Chegwidden at Alan Davidson.

Premier League - Round 1vs Northern Power

The first outing for the new season saw us with some changes from last year’s side, through both unavailability and retirements. This gave Scotty Morgs and Jacko Shelley a chance to debut, and both did a fine job.

We bowled first on a good pitch and fast outfield, while all bowlers bowled well, we let ourselves down with some sloppy fielding. Their opener top scored with 59, though we estimate he had 4 chances, including being bowled on a no ball. The Northerners had other contributors toward the death of the inning and finished with 170. Best for the lions were Span (3-40), Shoo (2-32), Morgs (1-26) and Saddam (1-27).

Unfortunately we never got going with the bat, losing wickets at regular intervals. Sang and Mac looked comfortable with a partnership of 46, and Jacko really looked the part in his first innings in the top grade with 26. We ended up all out for 143, a disappointing effort when you consider that there were two partnerships of 46 and 29 extras. Not good enough first up, but we are notoriously slow starters and will come good with more effort

and application.

Congrats again to Morgs and Jacko on a well deserved PL cap.

Division 1 - Round 1 Vs Northern Power

Narara 9-169 (T Diehm 31, M Nicholls 28, P Anderson 26) lost to Northern Power 5-171 (K Lawson 2-22, M Maccabe 2-39)

Division 1 welcomed Keiran ‘Rowdy’ Lawson (back from a northern hemisphere sojourn) and debutants Phillip Anderson, Matt Maccabe and Matt Nicholls for the match against the Northerners.Electing to bat first we lost an early wicket before four modest but steady partnerships between the next five batsmen saw us at 4-124 with about 10 overs remaining. We then lost three wickets on that score before Dan Richo and Phil added some valuable runs at the death to get us to a defendable score. We started our bowling innings well, with Rowdy bowling tight and taking a brace of wickets, to have the Powermen at 3-26 before a couple of

missed chances allowed their no.5 to put together a match-winning innings. We never dropped our effort but the opposition closed out the match with four overs and five wickets to spare. Matty Maccabe was unlucky not to have more to show for his very solid first up effort.

Division 3 - Round 1 Vs Northern Power

We made our journey North for the season opener against last years premiers with a few fill ins and more than a few of our Div 3 regulars in tow. The boys from the North won the toss and kindly invited us to have a bat on a deck that appeared to have little in it for the bowlers.

4 The Roar

Page 5: The Roar 2014-15 Vol 2

After an early scare we got off to a great start and a solid foundation with 30 partnerships for both 1st and 2nd wicket, with Stuart ‘Sweetie’ Owen dominating the early scoring backed up by Garry ‘Gaz’ Crowe and Zac Fitzgibbon. Kered Baird Batting at 4 kept the momentum going after we lost Sweetie and with ten overs to go we were just shy of 100 runs. Bex joined Kered and then Alex ‘Gom’ Montgomery joined Bex, after Kered was dismissed for a well made 24. Bex and Gom set about getting the target above 4 an over in quick time. Bex fell for 43 late in the onslaught and Gom had compiled a very handy 21 not out with Kered not out at the other end. Our innings closed at 6/171 thanks to some good early partnerships and the late hitting.

The Defense started well with Lachlan ‘Lachy’ Head bowling some good lines with nice late movement and Peter ‘Richo’ Richardson at the other being miserly. Jordan ‘Gummy’ Fitzgibbon nabbed a nice caught and Bowled and Bex suckered the other opener with a slower ball, before a solid partnership put the pressure back on us. Sweetie removed the initial stumbling block, then the Power’s major scorer to put us back in the box seat. A Four over burst of low scoring and or/maidens from our bowlers consolidated the wickets. Sweetie, Mick Cross, Richo and Lachy all contributed, Lachy being the damaging one snaring two in a two over burst. Sweetie cleaned up 2 of the last 3 before the Powers #11 committed suicide going for a second run. All in all it was solid effort with only a few hiccups in the field that will be overcome. Big thank you to the Fitzgibbon brothers for filling in- especially Zac for returning to the field after popping his shoulder again. Also the awesome effort of Gom, he got our fielding award for the day and was electric in hunting down balls before they got the boundary on an extremely fast surface.

Man of the Match: Stuart Owen (43 and 5 for 34)

A good first up win, some areas for

improvement, but first out winners is always pleasing.

D3 Cap. Mal Barsing

Division 5 - Round 1 Vs Northern Power

Division 5’s first game of the season was a game of two halves. We batted very well as a team but some wayward bowling and poor fielding cost us the game. Pete Stuckey and Craig Coskerie got us off to a great start before we lost three quick wickets. Dale Sinnott (making his debut for the club) and Israel Coggan come together to steady the ship before Dale was dismissed for a well-made 23. Jake Wanner joined Israel and continued to pile on the runs before Israel was dismissed just prior to drinks for 21 leaving us 5-89 at drinks.Jake continued to plunder the bowling after drinks and he and the skipper put on 94 in quick time before Jake was dismissed for a solid 41. The tail worked to get us to 215 at the close of the innings with Don Lavery making a well compiled 11 no in quick time (his highest score for a couple of decades. We all felt like 215 was enough to defend but some poor catching and ground fielding let us down.We will all need to lift our standard if we are going to be threat this season. The

bowling was steady with Jake the pick of them with poor catching making his figures look worse than deserved. Pete Sherwood and Don Lavery toiled hard but in the end we let this one get away from us.

Great bunch of blokes to play cricket with and we will have a great season together!

Division 8 - Round 2Vs Brisbane Water

After a disappointing start to the year with an unfortunate loss, round 2 wasn’t looking much better with player shortages threatening to call play before it began. With much player shifting, swapping, begging and pleading (I’m sure) a team was put together and listed. And then, WE WON before a ball was bowled, or run scored! Yeah.Brisbane Waters forfeited and ta-da, we were awarded the points. So, at the mid-week position of the round, the Narara 8’s are currently sitting in 1st ☺ (See below) Cheeky I know, but hey, we’ll take it. So now we steel ourselves for match 3 against local rivals Lisarow, and so GO THE LION, lets hear the ROAR!

U11 Cubs

The Cubs started the season with an emphatic victory over newly formed club Southern Spirit. Southern Spirit won the toss and batted with all of the Cub’s bowlers bowling straight to restrict the visitors to 3-30 off their 20 overs. Riley (1-4), Kane (1-4) and Nick (1-1) all took wickets. The fielding was

exceptional for the first game of the season with Levi’s efforts behind the stumps and Max’s ground fielding the highlights. In reply, Rachel and Lachlan provided a steady start before Riley (12) come in and took control of the innings. The momentum continued throughout the innings with our skipper for the day (Jack) making a match high 18no dispatching the ball to the boundary 4 times.Nick (11no) and Max (3) also made valuable contributions as the team piled on an impressive 5-61.Great start to the season Cubs!

The cricket season is now in full swing with all teams loving the Saturday mornings. A big welcome to our new and returning players. I am happy to report the Junior club has seen a 15% increase in its membership fielding 11 teams including a strong In2 Cricket contingent.

A big thankyou to our coaches and managers who have volunteered their time this year. We are fortunate in most teams to have two coaches or managers.

Our committee has been working hard with plans afoot to bring additional benefits to membership as the year progresses. I thank all our committee for the hard work they have put into the pre-season getting our club ready.

Happy Cricketing
