The Roar 2014-15 Vol 1

On behalf of the Publicity Sub- Committee, I’d like to introduce Sonia Campbell – our newly appointed editor of The Roar. Two years ago, one of our clubmates (Robert Campbell) came to me with the advice that he knew ‘somebody’ that would be prepared to take on editorial duties for The Roar. Unfortunately, this offer from his wife Sonia happened to coincide with our committee’s decision to lay our newsletter to rest at the time. Thankfully, when that decision was reversed two years later (with thanks to Stuart Owen and Garry Crowe in particular), Sonia took my call, and was once again immediately enthusiastic about taking up the editor’s role. For the Junior half of our club, Ali Fleming has agreed to take on the role of co-ordination and sub-editing of the reports generated by the Junior coaches. In addition Ali will be collating any other materials required for publication by the Junior Committee before forwarding onto Sonia. With Ali’s assistance, we will now have a newsletter that fully represents the whole of our club. Sonia Campbell is also being supported by Robert Ness (my son) in the technical aspects of actually getting the The Roar published. He tells me that with the software he uses, we are now able to download this newsletter onto any smartphone, tablet & PC to read whilst also making it interactive with links, embedded digital content and you can even comment on stories if you access the newsletter via ISSUU. Please join our committee in thanking & supporting Sonia, Ali & Robert in their endeavours. You can help them a great deal by ensuring you have your anecdotes and articles (complete with relevant photographs) delivered to Ali Fleming (Juniors) or Sonia Campbell (Seniors) on time. Welcome to all the new players, returning players, families and our new committee. Also welcome back to the much missed ‘The ROAR newsletter’ this will be your go to place for all news, match reports, upcoming events, fundraisers and much more. I believe we are going to have a fantastic year with some great headline worthy moments so please if you have something of interest please feel free to email me at [email protected] with all of your news and photos. As the editor material may be changed for clarity or space and photos will be approved before printing. We will be printing a very special edition soon to let you all know about the amazing experiences that a few of our lucky players and wives got to do, yes I’m talking about the trip to Nepal so keep an eye out for that one.

My experience with cricketAs I sit here now writing this my Hubby is out playing back yard cricket with my dad and brother in law and all the kids, there is laughs and tears going on. Cricket has always been the Australian way of life, as a child you would hit a ball with a stick or a plank off the fence out in the street and you wouldn’t get called in till dark. Usually the boys would bring their new cricket bats they had just received that Christmas morning and we all got to use

the nice new shiny bat and heaven help you if you scuffed the bottom of it.Every Christmas cricket gets played at our house as I’m sure it does at many with all the family getting involved big kids (Adults) to little kids. It’s a way of life, it’s a community spirit, it brings everyone together and you create lifelong friends. So this is what we all love about Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club – Community spirit, involvement, bonding, camaraderie and team mates. We love the wives, girlfriends and partners who make morning tea on home games. At the end of each game we would love you to come and wind down at ‘The Grange’ and listen to the match reports being read out, the members draw going off and to enjoy a BBQ with great company. Please note all contacts numbers or emails will be added shortly. If you have any questions you should first ask your captain and if they do not know the answer you will be directed who will be the best person to ask is. Good Luck to all this season, Play well, Play safe and Play fairTill next time Sonia Campbell

As you may know, Narara-Wyoming Cricket Club had a wonderful tour of Nepal in the off season.

(There will be more to follow on the team’s exploits in future editions)

When the team departed Nepal, we left some old gear and upon my return home I received a swag of delightful emails from young Nepali cricketers who were overwhelmingly grateful for the gear that we leftIn a country where the average wage is around one US dollar per day.Cricket gear is hard to get and difficult to afford.

Whilst in Nepal I had a chance meeting with a Western Australian, Peter Hillier, who runs a charity called “In Giving We Receive” – how true is this sentimentPeter is a cricketing and Nepali nut, much like me, so our conversation went for some time. By the end we had decided to try and get a container load of used gear to send to disadvantaged Nepali childrenThe details are being worked out now. The cost is around $300 per cubic metre to send and we will need contributions from other clubs and generous donors to manage this

What you can do right now?Bring your old but usable gear to training or drop it at my place under the carport at1 Driftwood Ave Narara, (corner Pinetop and Driftwood) access carport from driveway in Pinetop

Please do not leave gear that cannot be used or needs repair.Just leave old gear that you no longer want or needAsk others for their old gear or make a financial contributionI look forward to your generous contributions and support of this initiativePlease call me to discuss further.

Andy Ryan

Who was your first NWCC captain?Ken Brookes in 4th, Rob Cross as a junior the season before

Who is your favourite cricket player?I can’t go past Mark Waugh and Shane Warne. Compulsive viewing whenever they were batting or bowling, they just made cricket look so easy.

Who is the most memorable player in the dressing sheds?Col Smyth comes to mind. The only player I’ve ever seen whose kit is a garbage bag and batted without a bat grip...just the handle and string.

If you could have any player do a training run with, who would it be?Craig McDermott. The way he has taken the Australian attack from friendly to feared is amazing

What is your most enjoyable moment playing cricket so far?Probably winning the premiership by a run a couple of years ago. The game had everything and took so many twists and turns, momentum seemed to change every hour. I don’t think anyone outside our club believed we could stay with Lisarow, but we were able to come up with a couple of big plays when we needed to. The game was so tight and intense, to win was incredibly satisfying.

Welcome to a new season LionsIf you are anything like me, you can’t wait to get a ball or bat in your hand and get back out onto the field. We’ve been busy in the off season both in Senior Committee and Junior Sub Committee. I’m always so impressed by the energy, initiative and organisation of the Committees’ and it gives me great confidence for the future of this Club. My great thanks to all of the outgoing members and we are delighted to see many new faces into the committees. So a hearty welcome to the new members in the senior and the junior committees.

We are also delighted to see new members so if you see someone you don’t know, please make sure you get to know them and welcome them to the Lions. If you know of anyone who would like to play or who may be undecided point them our way. We’ve had a few chats with Patron and member of Bradman’s Invincibles, Arthur Morris, and I’m delighted to announce that Arthur will have the Sportsman of the Year Trophy named after him. We are in the process of organising a match between us and Laguna Cricket Club, another club of which Arthur is Patron. We’ll keep you posted on progress of this.

We have of course had the successful tour of Nepal. This was a great journey and much will be written about it in upcoming editions of The Roar. The next tour is scheduled for 2016 so please let us know if you want to come and start saving now!

As we enter 2014-15 season in an evolving cricketing landscape on the Central Coast; Clubs are merging and there is pressure for us to do so, numbers are down (we will not have a 9th grade this season), there are many competing pressures for our time and other resources

If we are to remain a strong, viable and independent club into the future we must perform on several levels; We must have strong governance – this is assured by the strong committees that have served us in the past and by the outstanding personnel on the current Committee. We must perform on the field and this season this means more runs from everyone. I urge you to get to every training session that you can and if you can’t get to the regular sessions, organise sessions with your club mates. We want the Club Championship back, this means that we must be successful across all grades so

no matter what level you play at your performance is vital to your team and to your club. We must retain our culture – Play hard but play fair. Respect yourself, your team mates, your Club mates, the opposition and the umpires. Play the game in the spirit of the gameGet back to the Grange on Saturday, even just for an hour to mix with your Club mates and share in their success. We must be financially viable – please support our sponsors by using their services whenever you can.

Finally, remember the words“A cricketer’s life is a life of splendid freedom, healthy effort, endless variety, and delightful good fellowship” WG Grace

Cricket is a game, a game is something we do to have fun. Enjoy yourself and that delightful good fellowship that comes from being a part of a Club like the Lions. Good luck to all in the upcoming season and Go The Lions!
