“In those days, Peter stood up among the brethren….” Acts 1:15

The Wednesday Night Bible Study group has begun exploring the Acts of the Apostles, a pivotal piece of the New Testament witness we all need to be as familiar with as the Gospels and the Epistles. The scholar H. J. Cadbury said that Acts is “the only bridge we have across the seemingly impassable gulf that separates Jesus from Paul, Christ from Christianity, the gospel of Jesus from the gospel about Jesus.”

And what happens early in The Book of Acts in that transition time is that new leaders emerge, first among them Peter. After Jesus leaves the disciples’ presence, Peter steps forward and begins to lead, and it is his witness that enlivens the disciples, brings new followers, and drives the formation of the church. In a new chapter of the Christian story, a new and inspired leader carries the good news forward. The Holy Spirit comes, and works powerfully through Peter.

And so it is for us at RHCC this spring: New leaders have been elected and will be beginning their work among us this month, and others are stepping down to resume “civilian” life as supportive members of the congregation as the story of our life together moves forward. Foremost among the later is Phil Swain, who, for more than four decades has been a vehicle for the Holy Spirit in varied and dedicated service to this church. The absence of Phil’s leadership leaves a void, but the Holy Spirit does not leave us unprepared: our new leaders bring their own faithful perspective, their own particular skills, their own ways of problem solving. As a church, our resources for celebrating God’s goodness and facing the challenges of life in this age are unchanged, but the expressions of that preparedness are as wonderfully individual as we are.

Please do offer Phil a word of gratitude, and welcome and support our new Moderator, Ruth Fitzgerald, and the new members of our Boards and Committees. The work of our church goes on, and though our leadership changes, the same Holy Spirit empowers and inspires and moves our faith forward.

Greetings from the Board of Deacons

What a wonderful Easter celebration we had in Rocky Hill! Thanks to Donna for leading the healing service. Thanks to everyone who read and served Communion at the service on Maundy Thursday. There was also a nice amount

of people who attended a special and moving Holy Saturday service. And then there was Easter Sunday! The new location for the sunrise service worked out well. At 10 am I think we could have squeezed in three more people – maybe. It was terrific to see so many people in church. A heartfelt Thank You to the Deacons who helped to usher and a big Alleluia and Amen to the choirs and musicians who contributed the joyful noise. Thanks to Kim Biglow for ordering all the beautiful flowers and to the Deacons who helped deliver many of them to shut-ins. Now as the church’s fiscal year come to a close there will be transitions within the Diaconate. We bid farewell to Rob and Charlotte and thank them for their contributions, thoughtful support, leadership and photographs. We look forward to being joined by Julie Dostie and Julia Pickett. There is one more transition: my two year term as Senior Deacon is coming to a close. At first it looked like a daunting task and I felt that I was not worthy. With the uplifting support of all the Deacons and the kind words of many congregation members, it has gone swiftly and smoothly. Writing for the Church Mouse has been a challenge and a joy. If the new Senior Deacon needs a hand, I am sure I will step in and start typing again. May the love of our Risen Savior be with you every day. Your Brothers and Sisters of the Diaconate, Barry Wilcock, Senior Deacon Rob Grandell, Charlotte Bacon, Katie Hoffman-Fulda, Pat Howland, Cheryl Hummel, Bob Inderbitzen, Deb Copes, Jean Palmer and Chris Sheehan

A brief note from the Board of Missions: We have had a great Missions year working on ongoing projects such as Blanket Cards for Church World Services and some great new projects. New projects included our second mission trip to Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi. This group has taken the title of Biloxi-26. We have also done some great mission work with the Christian Activities Council housing project on Irving

Street, Hartford. This project will continue on in the future at new work sites with more opportunities to get involved.

As the year ends, we bid farewell to our retiring board member, Mary Edith Bowman. We would like to welcome our new board members Chris Palazzolo, Michael Bower, and Bob Carberry. Officers for the coming year are Lynne Lataille, Chair; Zelma Hughes, Vice Chair; and Marge Murk as secretary.

Here’s an excerpt from a letter received from the CT Conference, United Church of Christ:

Dear Jonathan,

We are writing to express our gratitude for your support of our Church’s Wider Mission Basic Support. Everyday, churches reach beyond themselves to make a difference in the lives of people, near and far. You may never meet those whose lives you touch through your giving – in Connecticut, our country and throughout God’s world. We give heartfelt thanks on their behalf to your congregation for its 2006 OCWM contribution of $39,000. Of course, numbers are just the beginning of our mutual mission. Your Basic Support contributions make possible the expression of God’s care in our midst, witnessed in a wide range of activities, services, and relationships. This ministry includes the work of your Regional Minister an Associate Conference Ministers, the Silver Lake Conference Center, Consultants to Congregations, the Korean and Colombian Partnerships, training for Moderators and Deacons, confirmation retreats, Safe Church training, our conference newspaper, ConnTact, our conference web site and much more. Our deepest thanks for your ministry and for your church’s contributions through Our Church’s Wider Mission.

Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree, Rev. Ineke Mitchell, and Jim Morgan

How Is Your Memory? Our church has been blessed with a new set of paraments, table runners and Bible markers for the sanctuary and chapel—a gift in memory of Robert Rhodes by his family. Later this spring, the new fabrics will be dedicated and the

current set of four sanctuary paraments will be retired with gratitude and put on display, but the Deacons need your help now: we know members of the congregation made the current paraments, but the identity of the creators is elusive. Twenty or so years ago, did YOU have a hand in crafting the paraments? Do you know who did? We want to acknowledge and honor those who donated their time and skill, so if you can help, please speak to Jonathan, Donna, or Carol in the Church Office.

New Church Locks to be Installed

As part of the implementation of the RHCC Safe Church Policy, the current locks on the exterior doors of the church building will be replaced during the first week of May. This means your current keys will no longer operate. A new, numbered key system will be installed, and keys will not be as generously distributed as in the past! The Trustees and the Church Office will be working to help all who need access to the building after-hours, but for now, please be aware of the change!

Stepney Guild Join us on May 9 as we present Joan Dean and her “Deancroft Puppets.” The meeting will be on May 9 in Chapin Hall. A ‘bring your own’ sandwich/salad lunch is at noon with dessert and beverage provided. A short business meeting will follow before we introduce Joan

and her puppets at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to come to the program.

Dear Reverend Lee,

I would like to take this time to thank you and the congregation for all your well wishes and prayers. I get such a joy when I see my name in the church bulletins. It lifts my spirits to know that the friends of my father and people who I know in town have not forgotten about me, plus I see other names of people I know like Georgiana Wilson, who I grew up living right behind her house on Washington St. right down from the church. So again, sometime in the near future could you make it known to everybody how very, very thankful I am for all the prayer’s and good wishes.

Sincerely,

Rick Pawlich

God Bless the children.

Many of you have asked, “Whose bird collection is in the display case outside the church office?” Sue Starr’s cardinals are on the bottom shelf and Joan Tennyson’s are on the top shelf. Stop by and take a look. They worked very hard to give the hallway a spring like look for all of us to enjoy.

“DON’T TOSS ’EM—WASH ‘EM” SNEAKER AND FLIP FLOP CAMPAIGN

While most of us look forward to starting summer with a new pair of sneakers or flip flops, refugees in South Florida can’t enter a food pantry because they are barefoot. Please wash and air dry your used sneakers and drop them off in the box in the narthex between now and mid-June. Even leather sneakers can be machine washed. No stinky-

sneaks please! Clean Flip flops in excellent condition are also welcome. We will send packages to Fort Meyers so that refuges can have something to protect their feet, and be able to obtain meals and groceries at the food kitchen and pantry.
