The days have flown off the calen-dar at an alarming rate since the lastSynodical Committeemeeting in April. It is al-most unbelievable that2012 is quickly coming toan end and the next churchconvention to be held inTaylor July 18-20 is nowless than 9 months away.

Since the last Synodi-cal Committee meeting, Ihave had the pleasure of attendingand participating in several denomi-national events and activities.

Around the UnityOn April 22nd brethren from around

the state gathered at the Bryan/Col-lege Station Brethren Church to cel-ebrate the ordination of Rev. MarkSebek. Bro. Mark’s ordination wasthe 3rd ordination of a Brethren pas-tor within the prior six months. Rev.Denise Mikeska ordained in Seatonand Rev. Larry Zabcik ordained inTemple preceded Rev. Sebek in theirordinations, and these three ministersnow serve as the newest ministers inthe Unity. We thank God for His giftof these servants to His kingdomwork within the Unity.

On April 28th of this year theChristian Sisters held their conven-

tion in Snook, and theMutual Aid Society heldtheir convention in DimeBox on July 14th. Both ofthese organizations haveplayed significant rolesin the life and work of thedenomination and are inneed of membership andsupport to ensure their

continued service to the Lord through-out the Unity.

MissionsOn July 8th the Temple Brethren

Church hosted a joint worship ser-vice organized by the Granger, Ocker, and Temple Congregations. The ser-vice featured the preaching of ourmissionary to the Czech Republic,Pavel Kozak, and the singing of hiswife Stanya. Approximately 200 peopleattended the service. Although theCity of Temple was experiencing awater curtailment that caused manybusinesses to shut down that day, itdid not dampen the wonderful time ofworship and fellowship for those inattendance. It is always good to seeBrethren working together, worship-

ping together, and enjoying eachother’s fellowship, but it was a specialtreat to hear Pavel and Stanya as theyshared their gifts and experienceswith us that day.

In early August, five congrega-tions were treated to a visit fromMichael and Carolyn Woo, our mis-sionaries to China. The Woos re-cently returned to the United Statesfor a 6-month sabbatical. Before be-ginning their time of renewal andrelaxation, the Woos visited the Crosby,Industry, Wall, Bryan/College Station, and New Tabor congregations topresent a program on their work andexperiences with the Shan Dai people.

The Unity Mission program hasexpanded significantly in the last fewyears, which requires more financialresources. Mission giving through-out the denomination is on the rise, and it is critically important that wecontinue the momentum in our mis-sion support. The combined missionbudgets of Foreign and Home Mis-sions are forecasted to eclipse the$100,000 mark as together we work toaccomplish mission goals domesti-cally and internationally. We nowhave missionaries in Mexico, China, and the Czech Republic, in addition to

the domestic effort underway at CadeLake. Such an effort requires con-stant prayer, faithful financial stew-ardship, and support from all Unitychurches if we are to continue andexpand our mission footprint. I whole-heartedly support these ambitiousgoals and budgets of the Home andForeign Mission boards and encour-age each congregation to prayerfullyconsider their role in the Unity mis-sion effort.

Ministers’ RetreatA ministers’ retreat was held at

Horseshoe Bay Resort in Marble Falls,Texas August 11-14. Eighteen pastorsand their spouses attended. The eventbegan on Sunday evening with a lightmeal followed by a round of putt-puttgolf. Included in the golf outing wasBro. Henry Beseda. At 92 years ofage, Bro. Henry demonstrated that hestill has command of his golfing game.Over the course of the next two and ahalf days, the ministers enjoyed abalanced ratio of discussion time andrelaxation. The sessions were facili-tated by Pastor Dave Snapper fromWashington State. Billy Riggs, formerpastor, church planter, and illusionistdelivered a thought-provoking and

entertaining program complete withvarious illusions and magic after theTuesday evening meal. The retreatwas a success and seemed to meetthe expectations of those in atten-dance while providing a time of fel-lowship for the ministers and theirspouses. The retreat could not havehappened without the hard work onthe part of Dawn Marie Baletka. Weare very grateful to Dawn Marie for allof her work in planning, organizing, scheduling, and hosting the minis-ters’ retreat. Dawn spent untold hoursbringing the event together, and wedeeply appreciate her willingness tocoordinate the retreat. The ministersare planning to meet again in the nearfuture as a way of continuing thedialogue and fellowship that theyenjoyed in the retreat setting. Pleasepray for all of our pastors. Pray thatGod will inspire them, strengthen andencourage them while they build rela-tionships with each other and serveboth God and the Unity.

Hus School to Hit the Century MarkOne of our greatest Unity pro-

grams will be turning 100 years youngin 2014. The Hus School programbegan in 1914 as an educational pro-

gram intended to develop SundaySchool teachers and church leadersWe look forward to the opportunityto celebrate what God has done throughthis program in a day that is sure to befilled with reminiscing, fun, and fel-lowship. A committee is being formedso that plans can be made to celebrateand formally recognize this momen-tous part of our denomination’s his-tory. Anyone interested in serving onthis planning committee should con-tact Jim Baletka.

Bylaws Committee Action and UpdateThe Bylaws Committee has been

tasked with making modification rec-ommendations to our current consti-tution and bylaws. The committee’srecommendations will be consideredat the next church convention in Tay-lor in July of 2013. The committee hasbeen very active, meeting monthly forthe last six months. In the comingweeks, the bylaws committee plans toconclude its work and present its rec-ommendations to the denominationfor review and consideration prior tothe convention. ing the committee was also asked torender an interpretation of the currentbylaws. The issue in question wasone brought by the Bryan/CollegeStation congregation. The congrega-tion asked if Rev. Vanessa Mitchellcould vote and hold office in the localcongregation. It was the consensusof the Bylaws Committee that all ac-tive Unity pastors are members of theUnity-at-large and are therefore pre-cluded from holding office in a localcongregation or being a voting mem-ber in any local congregation.

Cade Lake HappeningsRev. Jim Heckman has begun his

recovery from a recent cardiac abla-tion. The cardiac ablation procedurewas performed to address an irregularand rapid heart rate caused by excessnerves surrounding his heart. Ac-cording to the doctors, the conditionmay have been present prior to theepisode Bro. Jim recently had thatlanded him in the hospital.

He and his wife, Diane, continue tominister to both the Dime Box congre-gation as well as to the Cade LakeMission. The Heckmans are in theprocess of setting up a homework laband study hall for the children of

Cade Lake. They are using the Sun-day School building and kitchen asthe lab, and are outfitting the spacewith second-hand and laptop com-puters for the children to use. Thestudy lab was recently toured by theCaldwell ISD teachers and adminis-trators and is being considered as amodel for similar labs in BurlesonCounty. Teachers from Caldwell ISD(including Diane Heckman) are volun-teering their time to tutor the childrenin the homework lab.

The BYF of the Cade Lake Missionrecently held a fish fry and are pur-chasing a sign for the Cade LakeCommunity that will be installed atthe entrance of the Cade Lake com-munity. The youth are hoping thesign will inspire a sense of pride in thecommunity and inspire the residentsto be good stewards of the commu-nity in which they all live.

As a denomination, we have re-ceived many blessings from God andpray for His continued presence andguidance as we continue to seek Hiswill. As we begin our preparations forthe convention, please pray that Godwill continue to bless and unite us aswe serve Him collectively as adenomination.

Imagine a culture where the ab-sence of leadership has left such acrippling vacuum that teens join groupsof other teens and allow them tobecome their models for parental loveand guidance. A system so pervertedthat even the most basic family func-tions such as discipline are carriedout in brutal and carnal ways likenear-death beatings and being as-signed to take the lives of outsiders. It is difficult to allow ourselves toimagine living like this; becoming solove-starved and experiencing suchsevere abandonment issues that wecould find comfort and security in agroup who practice such depravity.

What if you were practicing andacting in ways that were as commonto you as the lifestyle of a gangmember is common to them? Yet, isjust as detestable and foreign to Godas the acts of a gang member’s waysare detestable and foreign to you? What if our culture and our commonpractices are as brutal and violent toGod’s perfect, holy, eyes as the waysof a gang member seem to us? Whatif what we perceive as normal and

acceptable is far from permissible toour Holy Heavenly Father? Proverbs14:12 says, “There is a way thatseems right to man, but its ways arethe ways of death,” and Proverbs22:15 states that “Evil is bound up inthe heart of a child, but discipline willdrive it far from him.” If from child-hood we have evil or foolishnessbound in our hearts, do we reallythink our best course is to trust what“seems right” to us?

Exodus 32: Moses had been up onMt. Sinai longer than the Children ofIsrael thought was right. They be-came impatient and gave up on Mosesand God. They gathered around Aaronand said, “Come make us gods whowill go before us (and who will takethe place of Elohim); as for this fellowMoses who brought us up out ofEgypt, we don’t know what has hap-pened to him.” Instead of obeyingGod’s servant who told them to“WAIT”, and instead of following theLord God Almighty (Elohim) who toldthem to obey His servant Moses…they had better thoughts and more

reasonable solutions. They thoughtthere had been enough time… theythought they had waited longenough… they decided it was time totake matters into their own hands andtake care of themselves. God hadfailed; His provision and instructionswere not acceptable; they would dothings their own way. How manytimes have we responded this exactsame way to God? We ask for some-thing from God the Father. He wouldlike to bless us with exactly what wehave asked. He doesn’t say “Yes”, Hedoesn’t say “No”, His answer is“Wait”… but we become impatient. We think God has forgotten us andwe begin to manipulate and “man-handle” our lives. When this occurs,we receive the same result as theChildren of Israel; Idolatry. When wetake God’s sovereignty into our dirty, incapable, hands and we make what isequal to a golden calf. We fashionsomething from “what we have,” justas the Children of Israel and Aaron. They gave offerings from what theyhad and made something to worship. This was the way that seemed right tothem.

We do exactly the same thing to-day when we take our talents, our

abilities and our gifts that God hasgiven us and we rely on what we haveand try and make something excellentfor ourselves. God is not and hasnever been interested in or limited by,what we have; God is interested inwhat we are willing to give to Him soHe can add to our willingness HISability and make something great. Many times our abilities and pre-paredness become as a barricade toour progress with God, not the methodto the Promised Land. Our educationand abilities are as the Children ofIsrael’s willingness to leave Egyptand start the journey; however, Godhad to provide manna and direct themevery day to get them to the placewhere He wanted them to live.

No matter what we have to offerGod; no matter if our talents are greator seemingly non-existent, we aregoing to have to know and trust Godbefore we are able to wait on Him andobey Him. We need to know Himthrough a personal relationship (inprayer and daily communion) and totrust Him for who He really is (faithand trust are increased by readingand knowing His word) before we areable to wait on Him and see the Landwhere He wants us to live.

Proverbs 4:23 says that we shouldguard our hearts because they are thewell spring of life and that our heartscan deceive us… God will never makeus wait longer than is necessary. Hewill not delay, He is always perfectlyon time… we become impatient andjudgmental because we are not inGod’s presence. If you will notice inExodus chapter 31 and 32, Moses isnot the least bit concerned with howmuch time has passed. He was face-to-face with His Heavenly Father andhe was doing very well, not at allimpatient or tempted to become anidol worshipper. When we are in thepresence of our Father and we aretalking to Him friend-to-friend, it is asif time doesn’t exist.

When we have a personal relation-ship with God, our ways and ourthinking will look different than ourfriends and neighbors who are in the

world around us. We may seem to dothings “wrong” or illogical. To thosearound us using only their own brainsto determine logic we may seem a little“off”, but to those who are close tothe Father and who are relying onGod’s logic, we will know that all iswell. We can wait a little longer forinstructions, we can give even thoughwe are in need, we can choose to turnthe other cheek instead of defendingourselves. We will look as differentand odd to the world as a gang ofteens look to us. Although there is away that seems right to man… we arewalking in the way of the Godly beingled by the Sprit and loving the lifethat is truly life.

I greatly encourage you to investtime in your relationship with yourFather, know Him, and do not allowyourself to be deceived in any way.

God’s greatest blessings to you.

to witness the event. I was moved towatch the local pastors and my team-mates baptize the new believers.

Best of all was when our “Man ofPeace” together with his entire familymoved into the river for baptism. Ican’t tell you the joy I felt. As theycame out of the water they broke intosinging and dancing, and there wouldhave been no way to stop them evenif we had wanted. This joy couldcome only from God.

Two local pastors on our team,Zeca and Dominique, have committedto training up the new leaders of thischurch, and we are already confident

about who these leaders should be.One of the leaders is a family man, twoare mature young men, and the fourthis the son of our Man of Peace. Thesemen were obviously touched by God,and they worked diligently with us inall aspects of the work.”

Join me in praying along with Sergiothat God would bless this new church,Geracao Deus Mundial, and its fournew Chechewa-speaking leaders, andwould fill them mightily with His Spirit.Wow! Help us pray for these leaders, both Chilean and African.

Thanks, Anne

From the Thiessen’s…

September 2012

Dear friends,A few months ago I taught a church-

planting seminar to a team of Chileansheaded out to support church plant-ers working in various places in Asiaand Africa. Recently I got a letter fromSergio, one of the members of thegroup, who is now serving on achurch-planting team in Mozambique. He is helping to train leaders thereand helping them start new churches. This letter was passed on to me withthe note, “The principles you taughtare being put in practice and arebearing fruit!” Here is part of his lettertranslated for you:

“I told you in my last report thattogether with the pastors who tookour church planting course, we arejust starting to plant a new church inBaranda, where there has never beena Christian church before. We keepworking harder and harder at this, continuing to do door-to-door evan-gelism while we celebrate worshipservices under our tree, teaching,

In Christ’s Love . . . from the Mission Fielddiscipling, and putting up a shelterfor the new church.

It has been a beautiful time and wewere able to forge strong relation-ships in the village, which greatlysurprised the people who never ex-pected white foreigners to put somuch effort into them. Four entirefamilies that responded from the be-ginning and have participated in thewhole process are now the core of thenew church called “Geracao de DeusMundial” and the group also includesothers.

On our last day together we held acelebration with teachings, greetingsand testimonies without translations(butchering their native Chechewa, but doing as best we could), but thehighlight of the day was holding theLord’s Supper together. We felt God’spresence and unity in the group sostrongly.

Afterwards we walked to the riverthat divides Mozambique from Malawiso that the new believers could sealtheir commitment to God, giving pub-lic testimony of their faith throughbaptism. The place was surroundedby high rocks and many people came

Industry Brethren Church hasstarted a new program to make theconnection between Sunday morningchurch services and its shut-ins thatcannot make it to church. Members ofthe congregation have offered theuse of their cell phones to dial theperson that is not able to be presentand they are able to listen and partici-pate in the service as it goes on.

Rev. Kay Polasek greets the per-son/persons on the phone and holdsit up for the congregation to respondwith “Good Morning” and the mem-bers in turn can hear the person onthe phone as she holds it to themicrophone. They continue to listento the service, including having anopportunity to pick their favorite hymn(a practice that we do each Sundaymorning when those present have anopportunity to select their favoritehymn to sing that morning). The shut-in members have been given red hym-nals and the Favorite Songs Book aswell as portable communion packagesto use when we have communion, which they participate in with thecongregation.

Industry Brethren Church Makes The ConnectionCell Phones & Services

This program starts each Sundaymorning when someone calls the shut-in prior to the service beginning tosee if they want to “attend churchthat morning”. When the bell is readyto begin for the service, they are re-dialed and the connection is made. After the service is complete withbenediction and “Bond of Love” issung (our way of closing the Sundaymorning service); the phone is openfor any of the members to visit withthe shut-in that is on the phone. Thishas allowed some people to visit forthe first time in six years (time innursing home for one of the shut-inattendees, and even as long as 30years last time they saw each other!)

Industry Brethren is thankful forthe modern-day technology of “mak-ing the connection” between our shut-ins and services on Sunday morningon a personal present time connection.

Note to anyone wanting to do this:Many of the cell phone plans havefree minutes on the weekends. PraiseThe Lord for modern technology!

Traditions are wonderful and powerful things in the lives of children. Ifondly remember the live nativity scene every year as a child, anxiouslylooking forward to the day when I could participate! Or sleepy-eyedEaster mornings in church at the break of dawn—literally. Thesememories are forever etched in my mind and remind me of the solidRock on which I was raised. These memories never fail to evoke asmile or remind me of the love of my Heavenly Father. Thank God forparents and grandparents who provided this foundation. So, thismonth’s section is about traditions, Christmas and Thanksgiving, thatyou can provide your Sunday School students or maybe your childrenor grandchildren

1 Corinthians 11:2Now I commend you because you

remember me in everything and maintainthe traditions even as I delivered them to

you.

Holiday Traditions

1. Use the child’s handprint (or tracing of their hand orfoot) to create a craft. For Thanksgiving, you can turna handprint into a turkey. At Christmas, use multiplehandprints to create a tree. The fun is looking backeach year to see how each child has grown. Don’tforget to add the date! Moms will appreciate this yearsdown the road.

2. Take a picture of the class and add it to a “Wall ofHonor”.

3. Take up a special collection. We do the Feast ofCaring. My little ones love to drop change in the metaljar! Each year they look forward to the can making itsappearance in early November.

4. Make cards for members of the church forThanksgiving and Christmas (or any holiday). This willnurture the spirit of love.

5. Put out a Nativity Scene that can be played with.Fisher Price has a great one, as do other companies. We love to act out the story of Jesus’ birth with ours.

6. Pass out candy canes with the story of the candy caneattached.

7. Take pictures throughout the year and do a “Year inReview” lesson, reminding students what they havelearned!

Thoughtsfor Teens

Traditions for TeensTeens may have different reactions to traditions. Some may lovethem and look forward to them as they cling to their childhood.Others may try to push them away and not participate in an effort togain independence and their own unique identity. Whatever theresponse, it is important to provide the opportunities. Here are justa few ways teens can promote the Love of Christ during the Holidays.1. Sing. Sing for the elderly, sing in Church, sing in the park, sing

door to door. Just sing!2. Help. At our church, the youth help decorate the Church for

Christmas.3. Share. Share the story of Christmas with a live nativity, a

Christmas program, a special movie night or game night.4. Serve. Make a yearly trip to a food pantry or soup kitchen to serve

those in need.5. Collect. Collect items for others. Many organizations host food

drives, coat and blanket drives, toy drives, etc.6. Party. Host a Christmas party, bring gifts, but donate all the gifts

to a charity. You will have fun opening, and then rewrapping!

Fall Retreat SummaryFACING YOUR GIANTS

September 15-16, 2012

To communicate with the Hus Encampment . . .. . . regarding scheduling* of meetings or events there, contact:

Dawn Marie Baletka600 Benchmark Drive

God has a plan for you. Some ofthe GIANT obstacles in your life maybe to shape you and prepare you forwhat He is going to call you to do.David was a small boy. He had de-feated a bear and a lion and was onlya ‘lunch bringer’ when God used himto defeat Goliath. If you feel invalu-able or not good enough, rememberthat God created you. He values you.He loves you. He has a plan for youand you are PERFECT for that plan.Remember Noah. It took him 150 yearsto build the ark by hand. His relation-ship with God helped him perseverebecause he trusted and obeyed God.He knew it was about God’s plans.

When you are faced with giants inyour life, remember the 3 choices youhave to make:

1. Keep the right attitude. It’s notabout you; it’s about God.

2. Keep the faith. God is big enough.Trust Him!

3. Step into action. Do the rightthing, press on, even if you’re theonly one.

Thoughts about giving…Remembering the Unity of the Brethren or anyof its ministries is a fitting testimony of yourbelief. Your gift in a will can be a legacy thatcontinues to affect the Christian values, mission, and ministry that is important to you.

You can give without restrictions and let us use the funds forthe most pressing needs or you can specify how, when, orwhere you want the funds used.

You can require that we hold the principle as an endowmentand use only the earnings each year.

You can give in memory or in the honor of someone.

Your gift can be contingent. The funds go to someone if theysurvive you and if not, then to the Unity.

You can tell us now that you have named the Unity in yourwill and allow us to express our gratitude…or you can let itbe known later.

There are many other ways to give. Contact any Board ofGrants and Bequests member about what you can give andhow you can give.

32/November 2012 BRETHREN JOURNAL

Needed: FRIENDS OF THE BRETHREN JOURNAL– from the editor

The Brethren Journal has been publishing life and activitiesof the Unity of the Brethren in Texas for over 100 years. All of theseinclude records of weddings, baptisms, deaths, etc., of the minis-ters... when they were submitted. These records are invaluable forfamilies who wish to research their family history or activities thathave taken place in our congregations and the denomination. Itwould be fitting, in the eyes of the Brethren Journal BusinessCommittee, to ask for financial support for the continuation of thispublication. If you wish to become a special FRIEND OF THE BRETHRENJOURNAL, please send your donation to the Business Manager,Cathleen Schlechte (address inside front cover). These donationsare tax deductible.
