We reported in last month’s paper on the turmoil in the Manilva Town Hall after the resignation of two ASM councillors, and at the time of going to press this month the situation still has not been resolved, and there is now a situation where the opposition holds a majority position in the council chambers whilst having no departmental responsibilities. It would appear that the planning behind this ‘coup’ has been derailed thanks to the demands of the political parties at provincial level which have an agenda at odds with that of those at local level. Let’s hope the situation is resolved before much longer as this is not the time to be playing political snakes and ladders.We are now in the middle of the main tourist season, and if things weren’t diffi cult enough in the tourism industry, what with the global recession, and unfavourable exchange rates for visitors, once the tourists get here there is every chance they will not be able to fi nd an available hire car. Many rental fi rms are running fewer vehicles this year, some as much as 50 percent fewer, due to diffi culties in obtaining credit to secure the necessary vehicles. It’s about time the banks and the credit industry took a longer term view and joined the rest of us in trying to work through this diffi cult period, or am I just being naive?On a lighter note, there is plenty going on to take our minds off the world’s woes. Many of the towns and villages throughout our region are celebrating their summer ferias during these weeks, with El Secadero and La Linea celebrating their ferias this week, followed by Casares, Manilva and San Roque during the fi rst fortnight of August. Apart from these major events, there are numerous concerts and other activities going on from one end of the coast to the other with something happening virtually every day. Informamos en el periódico del mes pasado la confusión en el Ayuntamiento de Manilva, después de la renuncia por parte de dos concejales del partido de ASM, y hasta el momento la situación no ha cambiado; ahora hay una situación donde la oposición tiene mayoría, pero sin responsabilidades en ningún departamento. Parece que el plan con “este golpe” ha sido descarrilado gracias a la demanda de los partidos políticos a nivel provincial, con una agenda que no concuerda con aquellos a nivel local. Esperemos que la situación se resuelva lo antes posible.Estamos ahora en mitad de la temporada veraniega y turística, y por si las cosas no estuvieran difíciles en la industria del turismo con la recesión global y con la desventaja de las divisas para los turistas, tenemos, que una vez que los turistas están aquí les es difícil conseguir un coche de alquiler. Muchas empresas de alquileres de coche, tienen a disposición menos coches este año, algunos de ellos el 50% menos, debido a las difi cultades en obtener créditos para la obtención de dichos vehículos. Es hora de que los bancos y las compañías fi nancieras echen un vistazo a lo que está pasando y hagan algo al respecto o ¿estoy siendo muy inocente al pensar así?Voy a poner una nota de luz diciendo que hay muchas cosas que hacer para despejar nuestra mente de los infortunios del mundo. Muchas de los pueblos y ciudades de nuestros alrededores celebran sus ferias y fi estas de verano durante estas semanas, El Secadero y La Línea celebran sus ferias esta semana, seguida de Casares, Manilva y San Roque durante la primera quincena de Agosto.Aparte de estos eventos, tenemos numerosos conciertos y otras actividades casi diarias desde una punta a otra de la Costa. Manuel Melero, San Roque’s Councillor for Transport, has reported that it is now possible to take San Roque’s urban bus service as far as Cala Sardina between Torreguadiaro and Punta Chullera, thanks to a new bus stop installed this month.Another stop has been installed in Torreguadiaro itself, extending

San Roque urban bus service now serves Cala Sardina

travel to these beaches from various points in the San Roque municipality by the end of June.In addition it is anticipated that from the end of August these stops will also be served by the Estepona to La Linea service, once they have been approved by the Transport Consortium.

A project to create a Mediterranean woodland at the northern entrance to the Garden has been given the seal of approval by birds!The area north of the succulent beds, which stretches along the eastern edge of Grand Parade, has been gradually modifi ed by selective planting over the past 18

years. Native woodland species have been planted and, as these have grown, exotic trees and shrubs have been selectively removed, always leaving the wooded character of the area intact.So far, native Mediterranean plants to have become established include Narrow-leaved Ash, Mirbech’s Oak, Cork Oak, Round-leaved Oak and Strawberry Tree. False Acacias, Trees of Heaven, Lantana and Myoporum have been progressively removed. The area is given minimum management and the ground cover is allowed to develop as naturally as possible.There are still a good number

of years to go before all the exotics are replaced, but a recent development has encouraged the team involved in the project. The area has this year been chosen by a pair of Spotted Flycatchers, which successfully nested there - for the fi rst time in Gibraltar, fl edging at least two young over this last weekend - as reported on the Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society website (www.gonhs.org). These woodland edge birds seem to have accepted the changes as a positive move towards their natural habitat!In recent years Robins have also been present through the summer

El Ayuntamiento fi rma un convenio con la Sociedad de Cazadores y Urbaser para la protección de la cabra montesaEl Ayuntamiento de Casares ha fi rmado con la Sociedad de Cazadores Los Pinsapos y Urbaser un convenio para la protección de las cabras montesas existentes en su término municipal, concretamente los parajes de Sierra Bermeja y Sierra Crestellina.En el acto han estado presentes la alcaldesa de Casares, Antonia Morera, el concejal de Medio Ambinete, Pepe Carrasco, Andrés Chacón, presidente de la Sociedad de Caza Los Pinzados, y por parte de Urbaser, Oscar Naranjo, delegado de Servicios de la Planta de RSU de Casares. Durante la fi rma, la alcaldesa se ha referido a la importancia de la protección de los ejemplares de esta especie de cabra que en un futuro podrían ser una atracción turística para el municipio.Por su parte, el concejal de Medio Ambiente, Pepe Carrasco, explicó que a través de este convenio de colaboración el Ayuntamiento

subvencionará la instalación de comederos y bebederos, mientras de Urbaser apoyará económicamente la vigilancia de los montes que realizará la Sociedad de Cazadores Los Pinsapos, que es adjudicataria del aprovechamiento cinegético de caza menor del monte del Pinar desde diciembre de 2008.Con este convenio se pretende reforzar la labor de vigilancia del la guardería del coto para evitar la caza furtiva y así la desaparición de la población

de cabra autóctona del municipio, de la que existen alrededor de 200 ejemplares en el Pinar de Sierra Bermeja, y unos 60 en Sierra Crestellina.Desde el Ayuntamiento de Casares también se ha pedido la colaboración de la delegación provincial de la Conserjería de Medio Ambiente para la instalación más comederos y bebederos en ambas sierras del término municipal de Casares para la protección de esta especie autóctona.

Protecting the mountain goatCasares Town Council have signed an agreement with the local hunting society, Sociedad de Cazadores Los Pinsapos and Urbaser, for the protection of the mountain goats which live in the area, namely in the Sierra Bermeja and Sierra Crestellina areas.The agreement was signed at a meeting held at the Town Hall in Casares with the Mayoress, Antonia Morera, the councillor for the environment, Pepe Carrasco, Andrés Chacón, president of the Sociedad de Cazadores Los Pinsapos hunting society and

Oscar Naranjo, delegate from Urbaser, the Casares waste treatment company. The Mayoress stressed how important it was to protect this species of mountain goat both from an ecological point of view and as a tourism asset.Councillor Pepe Carrasco explained that through this agreement the Town Council will install food an watering troughs for the goats, whilst Urbaser will fi nancially support monitoring of the animals by the hunting society which has held the hunting concession for small game in this

area since December last year.This agreement will also strengthen the monitoring of the animals’ breeding grounds, preventing poaching and halting the fall in numbers, with some 200 in the Pinar de Sierra Bermeja and around 60 in the Sierra Crestellina.The local council have also requested the cooperation of the Provincial authorities for the installation of feeding facilities in the municipality to help protect these native animals.

Inauguran nuevo parque-retén del Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos en Manilva

El parque-retén del Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos en Manilva, que mejorará del Servicio de Prevención y Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento en la Costa del Sol, ha sido inaugurado y contará con diez efectivos que permitirá “atender situaciones de emergencia sin superar los veinte minutos.El parque-retén se encuentra en un local de la calle Doctor Álvarez Leiva que fue cedido por el Ayuntamiento y ha

supuesto una inversión de 95.000 euros que ha sido fi nanciada por el Consorcio Provincial.El equipamiento cuenta con cuatrocientos metros cuadrados que incluyen cochera con capacidad para dos vehículos de extinción de incendios y salvamento, almacén de materiales, gimnasio, vestuarios, sala de descanso, dormitorio y cocina.

Temporary car parks provide an extra 650 placesThe Town Hall have announced the creation of some 650 temporary parking spaces to cater for the heavy summer demand.As from 15th July a number of sites will be available for parking over the summer. Included in this project is the strip of land behind the properties opposite the green area between Duquesa Port and Castillo. This land is municipal land which has been in a state of neglect for many years.

Another 300 places will be made available on a strip of land between Manilva Autos and the La Duquesa Golf club which has been cleared and dressed with compacted gravel.Finally, a further 350 places will be available in the underground car park of the Sabinillas Sports Complex, this is as a result of an agreement between the Town Hall and Vera y Gea 21, the contractor involved in the construction of the

Miedo por supuesta bomba en SabinillasEl centro de Sabinillas se vio afectada durante varias horas la semana pasada, mientras la Guardia Civil investigaba una mochila sospechosa dejada cerca de la parada de taxi en la Plaza Vicente Espinel. Una mochila azul había sido abandonada cerca de los contenedores de basura el día anterior.

Todo fue aclarado después de varias horas por los artifi cieros de Málaga, los cuales comprobaron si la mochila contenía explosivos utilizando un perro adiestrado para artefactos, afortunadamente la mochila contenía simplemente una botella de agua y una toalla.

El Ayuntamiento se ahorra más de 67.000 euros con la eliminación del vehículo ofi cial

La alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz, ha comunicado que dentro de la política municipal de ahorro y contención del gasto se ha decidido rescindir el contrato de alquiler por el que hasta ahora se mantenía el coche de la marca Audi modelo A6 que servía de vehículo ofi cial para el Ayuntamiento de Manilva.Muñoz ha explicado que esta eliminación del vehículo ofi cial supone un ahorro de 67.200 €, a los que habría que añadir los 7.000 € que se entregan en concepto de fi anza. Así, el coste mensual de este coche de alta gama

era de 1.400 € al mes y el contrato se fi rmaba por cuatro años.La alcaldesa ha señalado que aunque supone la pérdida de un servicio con el que contaba ella misma y los concejales del equipo de gobierno para cuando necesitan acudir a alguna reunión ofi cial en otro lugar fuera de la población, la situación actual de las arcas municipales han llevado al equipo de gobierno que ella preside a adoptar esta decisión entendiendo que es la más correcta que se puede adoptar en estos tiempos.

Town Hall gives up its offi cial car

Manilva Town Hall has terminated the lease of the Audi A6 which served as the Ayuntamiento’s offi cial vehicle.The Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz, has stated that the elimination of this expense will save the council coffers some 67,200 euros, taking into account the 7,000 euro deposit and a four year contract at 1,400 euros per month.

Whilst it will be a loss to the image of the municipality as the vehicle was used when the mayoress or her councillors needed to attend offi cial engagements outside the municipality, the current state of the municipalities funds makes this facility an expensive luxury and so this decision has been taken.

From 16th to 19th July the I Grand Beer Festival will bring to Estepona’s Paseo Maritimo a fl avour of Munich’s famous Oktoberfest.The event, organised by Factoría de Sueños and One 2 One, in collaboration with the local authorities will see the installation of a dozen marquees and traditional Bavarian style wooden tables, where visitors can enjoy typical German fare such as pork knuckles with saurkraut, sausages and fricadelas, all washed down with steins of Bavarian beer.At the same time their will be various musical performances and other entertainment.The event runs from 8 pm to 2 am each night.

So what is rosé wine - a white ora red wine?The word “Rosé” comes from the French: rosé, meaning ‘pinkish’ and as such these wines have some of the colour

typical of a red wine, however, only enough to turn it pink. The pink color can range from a pale orange to a vivid near-purple, depending on the grapes and wine making techniques adopted.One method is when red-skinned grapes are crushed and the skins are allowed to remain in contact with the juice for a short period, typically two or three days. The grapes are then pressed, and the skins are discarded rather than left in contact throughout fermentation (as with red wine making). The skins contain much of the strongly fl avoured tannin and other compounds, thereby leaving the taste more similar to a white wine; the longer that the skins are left in contact with the juice, the more intense the colour of the fi nal wine.Another method to make Rosé wines is as a by-product of red wine fermentation using a technique known as Saignée, or bleeding the vats. When a winemaker desires to impart more tannin and colour to a red wine, some of the pink juice from the ‘must’ can be removed at an early stage. The red wine remaining in the vats is intensifi ed as a result of the bleeding, because the volume of juice in the ‘must’ is reduced, and the ‘must’ involved in the maceration is concentrated; the pink juice that is removed can be fermented separately to produce rosé.The fi nal method is Blending, which involves simply mixing red wine to a white wine to impart colour, part this method is uncommon and is

generally discouraged.So in short, Rosés are distinct wines that emanate from

Padre Manuel, en el que permanecerá abierta del 30 de julio al 3 de septiembre. Gracias a ella, se podrán contemplar unas sesenta fotografías, realizadas a partir de los negativos originales procedentes de las mejores colecciones que han recopilado la producción fotográfi ca de algunas de las fi rmas dedicadas a la edición de tarjetas postales de la Andalucía de principios del s. XX.

Organised by the La Caixa Social Works project, under the supervision of Christina Zelich, the exhibition was put together in 2005 in the San Fernando Museum of History later touring the major venues of Andalucia.

The exhibition features 60 photographs reproduced from the original negatives and portrays a series of picture postcards of life in Andalucia in the early years of the 20th C.

La Policía Nacional detiene en Estepona a un ciudadano danés considerado peligroso

Agentes de la Unidad de Delincuencia y Crimen Organizado (UDYCO) de Málaga, en colaboración con el Grupo de Fugitivos de Madrid, han detenido en Estepona, a un ciudadano danés sobre el que pesaba una requisitoria internacional.El detenido, de 33 años, tenía una orden pendiente de las autoridades de Dinamarca por la que debe cumplir quince años de prisión por delitos de tráfi co de cocaína y

hachís.La detención se produjo el pasado miçercoles, en la terraza de un bar junto a la urbanización Benavista, en donde el detenido se encontraba en compañía de varias personas.En el momento del arresto, hasta cuatro agentes vestidos de calle se aproximaron a él, habida cuenta de que el detenido “está considerado peligroso y se sospechaba que podía estar armado”.

Danish fugitive apprehended in Estepona

Offi cers from the National Police’s organised crime unit (UDYCO) in collaboration with a specialist fugitive squad from Madrid, arrested a Danish citizen on an international arrest warrant earlier this month.The 33 year-old was subject to an arrest warrent from the Danish authorities where he faces a 15 year prison sentence for traffi cking cocaine and hashish.

The arrest took place during the evening on the terrace of a bar in Benavista, while the accused was in the company of several others.Four plain clothed police offi cers carried out the arrest of the man, who was considered dangerous, and probably armed.

Over the past year we have seen unprecedented moves in not only stock and shares but also property and commodities such as oil, gold etc etc. Risk is something we encounter every day. In 1968 he was awarded the Medal of the Town of Arles for a documentary fi lm and, in 1969 he won the Montera d’Or, the highest award at the Montpellier International Film Festival. He is also a founder governor of the National Film School.In 1969, he was invited to assist Lord Snowdon designing the interior of Caernarfon Castle, scene of the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales.

His work is now exhibited in galleries all over the world and appears in numerous collections including the National Museum of Wales, the National Library of Wales, the Glynn Vivian Gallery in Swansea, in fact all the major galleries and museums in Wales, the Universities of Wales and Oxford, the Tate Gallery in London, the Contemporary Arts Society, the Knox Foundation in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in Washington DC and in national collections in Mexico, America and South America. Lucky or not John has considerable talent that, since 1989, he has been passing on to the students at his art classes here in Spain. Welcome to Tightlines. We are very happy to announce that our Junior Fishing Competition held on Friday 10th July at Aldea Beach was a huge success and those that entered had a brilliant evening. Our 1st prize winner was Sam Goodey who won a beach caster rod and reel donated by Medsports, a trophy kindly donated by The Resident, and an iFish (Boat Charter) t-shirt and baseball cap, donated by Capt Charles. Our 2nd prize winner was Luke Tarbuck, he won a 7 metre fi shing whip kindly donated by Steve Wilsdon. A very big well done to all the lads. The other entrants in the competition were, Ben Kennedy, Jamie Dougal, Brandon Chivers, Sasha Walters, Charlie Beaumont, Tony O’Keffee, and Jack O’Callaghan. All the juniors received either a t-shirt or baseball cap donated by Blackfi sh ES, one of our

wholesale suppliers. Below are just a few pictures of the event.The competition ran from 7pm until 10pm with various small fi sh caught from the beach. The atmosphere was brilliant and many of the parents attended
