April 2016Reporter

Doncaster born and bred, Jackie Pederson is now the CCG’s Chief Officer. On taking the role she said:

“First of all, I’d like to say that I’m excited, privileged and, un-derstandably, a little bit nerv-ous to be taking on the role of Chief Officer, but with such a fantastic team around me I relish the opportunity and look forward to working with you all in the coming weeks. I’d also like to thank Chris Stainforth, who retired last month. Chris lead the CCG from its inception until now and

under his leadership we have made great strides establishing ourselves as an organisation. I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say it’s been a pleasure and a privilege working with him.

We will be looking at filling my previous post as soon as possible and the closing date has now passed for the post of Chief of Strategy and Delivery. We hope to conclude the ap-pointment process before the end of April. Also on this note, I’m really pleased to let you know that our Chief of Finance, Hayley, has agreed to support

me in my new role and will assume duties as Deputy Chief Officer. These changes to our CCG come at a time when the NHS is facing significant challenges but I do believe that we are a great team and our knowledge, skills and approach to working openly, and effectively, with our partner organisations puts us in a strong position moving forward.

I’m really confident that by working together we’ll be able to tackle whatever’s thrown our way!”

A few words from our new Chief Officer

Following GP elections, Dr David Crichton is now the CCG’s Chair Clinical. Upon his appointment, he had this to say:

“I’m delighted to have been elected Chair and very excited to begin working with you all.

Of course I will know some of you from my previous roles at the CCG but others I will, hope-fully, be seeing and speaking to face-to-face in the coming days and weeks as I settle in.

I also want to take this oppor-tunity to thank my predecessor

Nick Tupper for his contributions to the CCG as Clinical Chair over the past three years and wish him the best in the future.

As a local doctor, I’m really passionate about providing the best service to all of our patients in the borough. I’m sure you’re all aware of the on-going challenges the NHS is currently facing but I know that we have a fantastic team here and together we’ll be able overcome these difficulties and will strive to deliver great care for the people of Doncaster.

I have worked at the CCG over the past few years in a num-ber of roles. I have been Chair of the Doncaster End of Life Group, GP Representative for the Medicines Management Group, Deputy Chair of the Area Prescribing Committee, the MacMillan Cancer Survivor-ship GP, EPaCCs lead and I also advised and worked on Tele-health.

And finally, although I’ve only been here for a relatively short time, I just want to thank you all for already making me feel so welcome and a part of the team.”

A few more from our new Clinical Chair

In the Hot Seat

Where are you from originally? Right here in Doncaster. I was born, and grew up, in Conisborough, just a few miles from where I currently live now. What made you want to work for the health service? After leaving school at 16, I worked for the British Coal Board for about five years. A friend of mine worked for the NHS and her job seemed really interesting. I had no idea of the different types of jobs or opportunities that are available in the health service when I first applied, so you could say I made a lucky choice really! What’s been your proudest achievement whilst working in the NHS? There have been so many things over the two decades, but I’d say that a highlight has definitely been establishing the Clinical Commissioning Group when it transitioned from the old Primary Care Trust in 2013. I think we’ve gone from strength to strength as an organisation ever since. In terms of my favourite role I’ve had within the NHS up until now was definitely my previous post as the Chief of Strategy and Delivery. It gave me a fantastic opportunity to work with so many different people within the organisation and I really enjoyed that. I feel at the CCG we have such

energy and determination to get things done and you can see that in the successes we’ve achieved in the past few years. What do you hope to achieve as Chief Officer? My ambition is to see services continue to improve and that we achieve our goals set out in our transformation and delivery plans. I want the system to be simple, effective and efficient and provide the best possible care. I’m particularly passionate about reshaping our services so they support patients in their home rather than having to go to hospital. I think this will be better for residents and will create more sustainable services. As an organisation and as a team, we have a great opportunity to lead a change in services and system that’s needed to respond to the town’s need. That’s our job and we do it on behalf of all patients in Doncaster. It’s a big responsibility! What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the organisation in the coming year? Our biggest challenges are increasing complexity of patients, increasing demand and all while resources are not increasing at the same pace. This means that we have to be bold and ambitious with our transformation plans but the difficulty is that we are implementing these in an environment

where there is no financial flexibility. Saying all of that, these will be significant challenges but I’m confident that we’ve got the experience, creativity and determination as a team to overcome these challenges. What do you like to do when you’re not working? It’s not that exciting really; I like to spend time with my family mostly. My house tends to be the focal point where we all get together for celebrations and BBQs in the summer and that’s something I always look forward to and enjoy. Oh and of course, I do like the odd holiday! I have really close friends that live in the Far East and this tends to be a favourite destination when it’s cold and miserable here during the Donny winter. This year we went a bit off-piste and visited South Africa; It was an amazing experience and I’m sure we’ll return to explore some more.

In the Hot Seat

Where are you from originally?

I’m a bit of a nomad really! I was born in Germany, son of a soldier, and both my parents are of Scottish origin. We moved around a lot when I was a child but I was mainly brought up in military bases in Germany, Cyprus and the UK.

What made you want to work for the health service and become a GP?

I wasn’t ready to leave school at 16, so I did A Levels. At some point I went to a careers fair, filled out a questionnaire and doctor came up as an option. Something about the profession struck me and I wanted to do it. At the time my school were doubtful and said I needed to think of something else but I enjoyed taking on the challenge.

After this I decided to apply for medicine and got my place. I found the first two years of university difficult, but after the patient interaction it just clicked and I haven’t looked back. I enjoyed every speciality of medicine but ended up being a GP as a result of the time I spent in the army.

When did you join the Armed Forces?

After I graduated from Leeds University in 1994 I joined the Royal Army Medical Corp and ended up serving for seven years. During my time I attained the rank of Major and served in a number of overseas detachments including: Botswana,

Kosovo, Morocco, Belize, Canada, Cyprus and Germany.

What’s been your proudest achievement whilst working in the NHS?

Since 2001 I have enjoyed my time working in Doncaster (Bentley Surgery) immensely, but if I had to pick something specific? It would probably be working on improving end of life care, locally, regionally across Yorkshire and also inputting nationally. It’s such an important, and also sensitive, time for people and their families and I find working to improve end of life services to be really important.

What do you hope to achieve as Clinical Chair?

I’m particularly passionate about providing the best service for all patients in the borough. It’s my driving ambition to reduce inequality so that everybody has access to the same high quality care.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I have a few hobbies but I particularly enjoy skiing with my son (12 years old) and partner. I’m a pretty active person and as such I’m into my sport such as running (I have completed nine marathons) and I love cycling both as a leisure activity and as a spectator. I’m also a keen traveller and enjoy seeing different places

and cultures throughout the world. I’ve been lucky enough that I’ve trekked to Everest Basecamp, while I’ve also reached the summit of quite a few mountains in my time such as: Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Mount Toubkal (Morocco) and Mount Kinabalu (Borneo).

April 2016Reporter

It might not look like it, but the sun has got plans and it intends to shine some time in August. It may only be for a day, but it’s time to get ready!

As we hurtle through April, many of you will be thinking about your holidays. If you’re starting to mildly panic about that food baby you’ve been growing or the umpteen pairs of jeans that are now being re-purposed into tea towels, we’ve got you covered.

Here are just a few gyms in Doncaster that, with the flash of an NHS card, will offer

Summer is coming!discount membership:

Doncaster Dome (and all Culture and Leisure Trust gyms): Monthly fee £20, down from £25.

Exercise 4 Less: True to it’s name £9.99 per month for full peak access, two personal training sessions, diet plan, t-shirt, water bottle and towel.

Nuffield Health: For the more swanky amongst us: £42 a month with an annual contract with a waived joining fee of £29.

CCG updatePlanning: We have submitted a vast array of operational plan drafts encompassing activity, capacity and finance. We are working across South York-shire & Bassetlaw to develop the 5-year place-based Sus-tainability & Transformation Plan (STP) which will be un-derpinned by a local plan. We are also producing the Annual Report for 2015/16.

Care outside of hospital: We are starting to develop a po-tential model for intermediate care following the needs as-sessment. We have good en-gagement from practices in the discussions and over the next six months we aim to develop the specifications for each of

the 4 pillars in the Primary Care Strategic Framework.

Finance: In the last few weeks, the position has been further clarified and it leaves some CCGs in an unprecedented position where they will be declaring deficits. This is not the case for us, and we still expect to meet our statutory duty to break even in 2016/17. To balance our plan, we will, however, need to get efficien-cy savings from the system totalling £7m. Strong financial control during 2016/17 will be crucial to ensure delivery of the our financial targets. The local health system will only remain financially sustainable through integration and collab-

orative commissioning, through working closely with primary care, providers and the local authority.

Assurance: Our Quarter 3 Checkpoint discussion with NHS England was held on 19 February 2016. The meeting focussed on planning, contract-ing and finance for 2016/17, performance and delivery (e.g. A&E, Ambulance, diagnostics, cancer), our care outside of hospital work including devel-opment of our primary care strategy, and development of our local Sustainability and Transformation Plan.

Mick Booth, (Half) Marathon ManAdding to the ever-expanding list of people at the CCG who are active and not content to just sit around eating their body weight in M&Ms, Mick Booth will be taking part in the Leeds Half Marathon.

Taking place Sunday 8 May, the fun run is 13 miles and snakes around Leeds city centre, fin-ishing at Millennium Square.

Mick will be taking part in order to raise money for Leeds SVP Children’s Holiday Camp - an organisation the CCG employee has beenvolunteering at since 1988.

Each year, the children’s camp offer disadvantaged kids a week’s holiday in the Dales, with a small army of volunteers organising events and activ-ities to make the trip that bit more special.

Now in full training, Mick has splashed out on a snazzy pair of running shoes and can be found most evenings pounding the pavements in preparation for the challenge in May.
