Andrew Mole won the Quillfor Best Report on Rural andRe giona l A f f air s w ith hisfront-page story on the woes ofElders.

The same story also wonbest news story at the RuralPress Club of Victoria awardslast year.

The Quill judges said of thestory:

Andrews report chartedthe struggle for survival of a171-year-old Australian agri-business icon, Elders.

He applied some doggedinvestigative reporting andmined excellent sources to de-scribe Elders battle against asavaged share price and dis-gruntled shareholders.

The Weekly Times PeterHunt was highly commendedin the same Quill category forhis story Green Devil.

Peters story revealed the di-lemma facing the CoalitionOpposition over whether to di-rect preferences to the Greensin the lead-up to the state elec-tion.

His story was later picked upby all media.

The Weekly Times designerTravis Kennedy also won aQuill for the Best Graphics inany Medium for his Sunday Herald Sun AFL poster seriesduring last years finals.

Roll-over bars

MIXED messages over whetherto fit protective roll-over bars toquad bikes are confusing andfrustrating farmers and dealers.

Last week Honda Australiaemailed all its dealers, attachingthe industrys recommendationagainst quad-bike roll-over bars.

But Worksafe Victoria andthe nations peak rural healthcentre have both recommendedfarmers fit roll-over protectionto their quad bikes.

It has left dealers such asCorryong company Roger CBrown in a quandary.

Roger C Brown sells quadbikes and had been selling quadbars for the past month.

But partner Roy Brown saidh e w o u ld n o w si t o n t h efence after reading the indus-try position paper prepared bythe Fe de r a te d Cha mbe r of Automotive Industries.

Mr Brown said he was con-

scious of safety issues, laws andregulations and had decided tosell the quad bars.

We looked at the infor-mation and the design and de-cidedthey (the quad bars) wouldbe a he lp if the qua d bikerolled, Mr Brown said.

But after reading the indus-try report, we dont know whichway to go.

There is no confusion fromthe Australian Centre for Agri-cultural Health and Safety,which will use this monthsCountry Womens Associationnewsletter to lobby for roll-overprotection for quad bikes.

In the newsletter, the centresAssociate Prof Tony Lower saidm a n u f a ct u r e r s w e r e u s i n gscare tactics by saying thatf it ting r oll- ove r pr otec tionwould increase injury and voidwarranties.

Both points are incorrect,Associate Prof Lower said.

The Federated Chamber ofAutomative Industries motor-cycle manager Rhys Griffithssaid the industry paper hadbeen distributed nationally todealers.

Mr Griffiths denied dealershad been told not to sell roll-over protection.

The paper was sent out sothat the dealers could at leastmake an informed decisionwhether or not they want to sellr o l l- o v e r p r o t ec t i o n, M rGriffiths said.

He also hit out at WorksafeVictorias move to recommendroll-over protection before thereport from a technical workinggroup was completed.
