The Power of YouBuilding Your Personal Brand

• What is a personal brand?

• Why is a personal brand important?

• What is your personal brand? – How would you describe it?

– Does it stand out?

– What does it say to those you come in contact with?

• Become in charge of your brand – Making sure your brand does not take on a life of its own

Personal Branding –What Is It?

• Personal branding identifies an individual’s assets, characteristics, strengths and skills

• It is a mix of how you present yourself and how others see you

• It is essential for career and personal growth

6 ● schencksc .com

Personal Branding –What Is It?

• It is the total experience of someone having a relationship with who you are and what you represent as an individual; as a leader

• It is a leadership requirement, not a self‐promotion campaign– It’s not about showcasing your achievements and success stories

• It represents the value you are able to consistently deliver

Personal Branding –What Is It?

• Less than 15% of people have truly defined their personal brand and less than 5% are living it consistently at work – each and every day

• Why? It can be extremely challenging– It requires a tremendous amount of self‐awareness, action

and accountability

• Developing your personal brand is a journey

8 ● schencksc .com

Personal Branding –What Is It?

• It extends beyond:– Your family

– Your friends

– Your department

– Your company

– Your community

• Actively thinking about your brand… over time the responsibility becomes natural and instinctual part of who you are

5

9 ● schencksc .com

Personal Branding –Why is it Important?

• If you don’t take charge of your brand – someone will

• Understanding your personal brand will help you both personally and professionally– It will position you;

– Provide consistency to others; and

– Help you reach your goals

• View your personal brand as a trademark– An asset that you must protect while continuously molding

and shaping it

Words that Describe – YOU

14 ● schencksc .com

What is Your Personal Brand?

• Ask yourself and write down– What words describe you?

– What you expect others to experience from you?

– What is the total experience of having a relationship with you like?

• Ask a friend the same question

• Are the answers the same or similar in meaning?– If they are, good for you!

– If not, you have some work to do.

Developing Your Brand

• When working with others:

– Be mindful of what others are experiencing about you

• Is this the brand you want?

– It is similar to a job interview – expect that you are being evaluated by your peers

• Those who know how to live and manage their personal brand will earn their respect in any situation

20 ● schencksc .com

Positioning Yourself

• Prepare before you go

• Identify common ground with strangers

• Practice self introductions

• Move from “guest” behavior to “host” behavior– Enter the room with confidence

• Remember eye contact and smile– Avoid a “roving eye”

• Nametag

• Handshake– Avoid the “jellyfish,” “knuckle breaker,” “finger squeeze,”

or the “covered handshake”

21 ● schencksc .com

Positioning Yourself

• Quality contacts are a must– Look for people you either know or want to know

– Use the buddy system

– Position yourself between the entry and buffet/bar

– Following up on promises

– Do you mind if I follow up with you sometime?

– Seek out the “white‐knuckled drinker” and other people who will appreciate your interest and conversations

• You don’t need great opening lines – anything will work if it’s done honestly and with a smile

22 ● schencksc .com

Positioning Yourself

• Don’t be afraid to move in and join conversations – Approach groups of three or more

– Be open to others who “want in”

• Moving on– Spend no more than 8‐10 minutes with any one person

– Graceful exit: “Excuse me”

– Thank the host

• Handwritten notes

• Name nightmare (memory lapse)– Honesty is the best policy

– Introduce the person you are with
